Jim Ross Talks Potential Shinsuke Nakamura Name Change, Awesome Kong, & More

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2qnx33

Jim Ross has posted his latest blog entry at JRsBarBQ.com covering some of the biggest stories in the pro wrestling world. As always, he gives his thoughts from his unique perspective as a wrestling announcer and executive with decades of experience. Here are some of the more notable comments from Ross this time out:

On Shinsuke Nakamura and discussions of whether or not WWE will change his name:

I have no issues with WWE changing Shinsuke Nakamura’s ring name if they choose. WWE should own the talent’s names and/or have the legal rights to protect their intellectual property in the show biz world of pro wrestling. It’s sound business and won’t adversely affect how Nakamura gets over with the fans. In the eyes of many, mine too, Nakamura is one of the most gifted talents in the world and brings as much natural charisma to his presentation as any one in the business today.

On Awesome Kong being sent home from TNA’s UK tour due to an incident with Reby Sky:

Sorry to see one of my favorite female grapplers, Awesome Kong, involved in controversy in the UK that saw TNA send Kong home from the tour there. I don’t know the complete story but It’s regrettable nonetheless. Kong has the ability to help any company IMO. Let’s hope that this matter is addressed and all parties can move positively forward. One has to ask if TNA knew that there were lingering issues between the two ladies in question here why didn’t they address such and attempt to clear the air if they didn’t?

On the fans dressed up as past stars at Raw:

Don’t understand why WWE is allegedly not pleased that some fans dressed up as WWE stars no a recent RAW which saw @TheRock interact with them. I thought it was entertaining.

And of course, he extends some well-wishes to Bret Hart:

Best wishes to @BretHart on his upcoming battle with Prostate Cancer. I’d lay my money on The Hitman to kick Cancer’s ass.

The full blog post includes thoughts on Braun Strowman, some vague notes on a meeting Ross has this weekend, NXT vs. Raw, and more.

Tye Dillinger Injured at #NXTDetroit (Video)

Tye Dillinger was injured at Saturday night’s NXT live event from Detroit, Michigan. During his match against Sami Zayn, Dillinger was suplex and landed badly on his left foot. The referee called an audible and Dillinger rolled to the outside and was counted out. He was helped to the back by officials and Sami cut a promo after the match putting over the crowd.

The following are results from the show and video of Dillinger’s injury:

  • Enzo & Big Cass beat The Vaudevillians.
  • Carmella defeated Alexa Bliss via submission.
  • Elias Sampson defeated Johnny Gargano.
  • The Sami Zayn beat Tye Dillinger by count-out after Dillinger injured his foot.
  • Women’s Champion Bayley beat Nia Jax with the Bayley To Belly suplex.
  • American Alpha beat NXT tag champs Dash and Dawson via DQ.
  • NXT Champion Finn retained in a 4-way match against Baron Corbin, Samoa Joa and Apollo Crews. Joe had Corbin in rear naked choke when Apollo hit standing moonsault and covered both guys for a 2-count. Balor delivered a double stomp Corbin and pinned him for the win.

WWE Issues Statement On Allegations Of Sexism In Presentation

https://youtu.be/dZbiyZW4RUw

A topic that’s gotten some attention this past week on wrestling websites and social media has been the continuing discussion of WWE’s treatment of women both behind the scenes and in terms of their storytelling. While this has been brewing for a while because of the whole NXT Women’s Division vs. WWE Divas’ Division dynamic, it came to a head this past week because of two moments on WWE programming:

  1. Ric Flair forcibly kissing Becky Lynch as a distraction spot and the announcers laughing it off as a comedy spot.
  2. The Rock’s entire interaction with Lana, who was returning to TV after a noticeable absence, being about the idea that she cheated on Rusev with him when he last appeared on Monday Night Raw.

Today, the topic was explored in an article at Vocative by Alex Groot titled “WWE’s Looming Sexism Problem.” When asked for comment on the piece, WWE issued the following statement:

WWE programming, which features fictional characters that cover a range of personalities similar to movies and television shows, tells stories of good versus evil. In addition, as our on-going storylines develop, we will continue to position women as both strong competitors and compelling individuals.

Of course, as mentioned by Groot, even if you can argue that at least Flair was an evil villain doing evil things, The Rock was the babyface and Lana was the heel.

James Storm Talks Leaving NXT To Return To TNA & More

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KzFaUo2oPcA

James Storm has had a strange last several months of his career: He left TNA, made a few appearances on WWE television doing guest spots on NXT, never left TNA television because they taped the World Title Series before he left, and then returned to TNA in lieu of signing with WWE. One of TNA’s signature stars, he’s been promoting TNA’s upcoming tour of the United Kingdom, and one of his stops was an interview with RealSport. Here are some of the highlights:

Making the decision to return to TNA:

I’ve been with TNA since the very beginning and I want to see them succeed, I feel like I have a lot to give not just to TNA but the wrestling business as a whole, I just felt that right now I can help TNA out a lot.

Was teaching younger wrestlers something that excited him about NXT?

Oh yeah, it kind of reminded me of when TNA was first starting out, all the guys are hungry and had a chip on their shoulders looking to prove they have what it takes.

His thoughts on if Triple H winning the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at the Royal Rumble was too predictable and/or stale:

Yeah, a lot of people have asked me this question, and I always say wait to see how the story plays out, because it can help to build a bigger star. Especially now that you want to see Triple H get beat. Its genuine, real heat, you’re there thinking this SOB, I really want this guy to get beat now.

Make sure to check out the full interview for more on his return to TNA, including the Beer Money reunion.

NXT Women’s Champion Bayley spoke with WZYZ.com this week to promote NXT’s first-ever live event from Detroit, Michigan this Saturday at the Royal Oak Music Center. Here are the highlights of what she said:

Winning NXT’s Female Competitor Of The Year & MOTY [Iron Man vs. Sasha Banks at Takeover: Respect]

“Female Competitor of the Year, I was really surprised because of the other girls that were in it,” Bayley said.  “The match of the year , I always get emotional when someone brings it up or talks about it. It was really cool. I’m glad to have something like that to share with her forever.”

Getting Called Up To The Main Roster:

“Getting to WWE is always on my mind because it’s what I’ve wanted to be since I was 10,” she said. “That’s my ultimate goal as much as I love NXT; I want to be on the big stage.”

James Storm Compares NXT To His Early TNA Days

James Storm, who returned to TNA earlier this month after briefly appearing on NXT, recently discussed how the two companies compare. In an interview with Radio Yorkshire to promote TNA’s upcoming UK tour, Storm said NXT reminded him of the younger talent in TNA.

“It was cool being in NXT, I made a lot of new friends, I saw a lot of old friends as well,” Storm said. “I think NXT reminded me of a young TNA group, guys who were out to prove they deserved to be there and in TNA guys are trying to prove they can hang with The Wolves, Matt Hardy… the two groups don’t hate each other, they have to go out and do their job to the best of their abilities.”

Watch: Former TNA Champion Debuts In NXT

Former TNA World Champion Austin Aries appeared during the January 22nd taping, after being introduced to the crowd by William Regal. He ended up getting attacked by Baron Corbin as he was making his way to the ring, which is likely the start of a feud between the two. WWE has already published news of his debut on their official website.

Here are some videos and photos of his debut at the taping:

We reported earlier this week that Aries was undergoing WWE’s medical exam in Pittsburgh, PA. His TNA contract expired on June 28, 2015.

NXT Newcomer Manny Andrade Getting Positive Feedback, More CMLL Luchadors To WWE?

Former CMLL luchador La Sombra (“The Shadow”) made his NXT debut earlier this month, competing without his trademark mask and using the ring name Manny Andrade. It’s interesting to note that Andrade is getting much more support from his former CMLL co-workers than the original Sin Cara did when he first joined the company.

Many CMLL wrestlers sent congratulatory messages to Andrade while the original Sin Cara’s WWE debut was met with indifference. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, a lot of CMLL talent are keeping a close eye on Andrade and how he progresses in NXT. While the original Sin Cara’s WWE run was a total bust, Andrade has been improving his English and there’s hope that WWE will show continued interest in ‘Americanized’ luchadors from Mexico.

Back in November, the former La Sombra spoke with Kris Zellner of The Lucha Report explained that fellow Mexican stars Alberto Del Rio and Kalisto advised him to start in NXT and adapt to the WWE style while improving his English and polishing his act. He added that he misses his friends [CMLL stars] Rush and La Mascara and hopes that they can reunite in WWE one day.

Bayley On Why She Wants To Be Called Up To WWE Main Roster Despite Being Attached To NXT

NXT Women’s Champion Bayley recently spoke with the The Green Bay Press Gazette to promote this weekend’s WWE live event in Green Bay, Wisconsin and spoke about her character, what the NXT Women’s Championship means to her and her thoughts on going to the main WWE roster. Below are some of the highlights from the interview.

On her character:

“I tell people that it’s not even really a character, because I’m still such a huge fan. (The gimmick) just happened randomly in a promo class. I was making all these promos about how much I love so-and-so, it just became really fun for me. So Dusty (Rhodes) and the writers really pushed me and helped the character a lot.”

On what the title means to her:

“The NXT women’s title means a lot to me. It’s surreal when I open up my suitcase to put my gear on and I have the championship belt in there with the WWE logo on it. So that’s really cool. For me to defeat Sasha Banks to win it is one thing, and for me to be able to carry it with the roster we have right now is another thing.”

On going to WWE’s main roster:

“I’m not hesitant. It’s just that I’m very proud of NXT, and I’m so happy that I’m able to be a part of it. I watched NXT grow from 12 people to me winning the championship in front of 16,000 people. I love NXT because I obviously have an attachment to it, but I want to get up there (main roster) because that’s what I’ve wanted since I was 11.”

Finn Balor Talks About The Growing Popularity Of The NXT Brand

Muscle & Fitness recently spoke with NXT Champion Finn Balor, who spoke about NXT going from being a basic development league for WWE to becoming the popular second brand owned by WWE.

“NXT has grown so fast that nobody really understands just how big it can get,” Balor said. “We are expanding into Europe. It’s not just a flash in the pan.”

Balor continued, explaining that it is the quality of the product that has connecting the audience to the brand in such a way that it has created its’ own identity.

“We’ve been consistently delivering night in and night out,” Balor said. “NXT has definitely created its own brand and is its own entity.”

WWE Preparing Debut Character For NXT Rookie Levis Valenzuela Jr.

It looks like NXT rookie Levis Valenzuela Jr. will be debuting his new gimmick in the near future.

Konnor had previously been on the sidelines for a week or two with what was believed to be a jaw injury of some kind. The Ascension wound up losing to the team of Goldust and Fandango in what was their first match back as a team on a main roster event since Konnor took time off to heal up. Konnor’s first match back in general was a tag-team match that saw The Ascension lost to NXT Tag-Team Champions Dash and Dawson at the NXT television tapings this past Thursday night.

Mixed Reaction In WWE & NXT To Triple H Appearing On TakeOver: London While Injured

https://youtu.be/RtksPFMfuPU

There have been mixed reactions in WWE and NXT to Triple H making an appearance during the NXT TakeOver: London show in December only a few days after he wasn’t on RAW because he was selling the attack he suffered at the hands of Roman Reigns at the TLC pay-per-view. There was also talk about some workout footage he posted on social media that week that showed him lifting weights like a pro while he was injured in the storylines.

The majority of those in WWE felt that if anyone else was involved in a major injury angle on television and posted training footage of themselves on social media, it would get them heat with WWE management. Those same people, however, are fully aware of the fact that the regular rules generally don’t apply to top stars or anyone named McMahon.

As far as HHH’s NXT appearance goes, the consensus is that would never happen to anyone else, as they simply wouldn’t be booked on an NXT show if they were injured in the storylines.

At the same time, there were those in NXT that were upset with the wording of Roman Reigns’ promo on that week’s edition of SmackDown, as he spoke as if no one had seen or heard from Triple H since he beat him up at the TLC pay-per-view. The feeling was that Reigns’ words made it seem like he was going out of his way to act like the NXT TakeOver: London event didn’t happen, as he essentially ignored it. There were some who took it a step further and were of the opinion that Reigns’ promo made it seem like NXT is a brand that the main roster doesn’t pay attention to or watch, which could give the viewers the impression that it’s not important enough to care about.

According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, it was acknowledged that Triple H probably shouldn’t have made the appearance at the NXT TakeOver: London show in the first place, however the feeling was that one way or the other he was going to “take his victory bow” in front of the sold out NXT crowd.

Those on the main roster felt they had a more legitimate beef, as they did the injury angle and Triple H missed RAW on Monday to sell the TLC attack, Reigns did the promo about HHH missing in action since TLC at the SmackDown tapings, which they feel everyone knows is really taped on Tuesday, so they felt he should have purposely kept himself off of the NXT TakeOver: London show, which was on Wednesday.

Regardless of which side has the bigger argument, the feeling was that Triple H should have appeared on RAW the next week, not the NXT special, and Reigns shouldn’t have made comments under circumstances that would make the NXT brand come off as a second rate brand that isn’t worth watching, especially considering it aired on the WWE Network.

James Storm spoke with Bill Apter this week about his decision to return to TNA, his time working with Triple H in NXT and more. Here are the highlights of what he said about:

“You know to me I got unfinished business to do and basically to support my family. That’s what it came down to. I was in contract negotiations with different people and what it all boiled down toImpact Wrestling gave me the best offer.”

Fans Criticizing His Decision:

“They can say whatever they want to say if they want to say negative stuff about me I don’t care. Because they don’t know the whole story. There’s a lot that went on behind the scenes.”

His Brief NXT Stint:

“With me in NXT, it’s a mutual agreement. The door is still open. I talked to Hunter and to me he’s one of the greatest minds and one of the best guys I’ve talked to, especially business-wise.”
