Rey Misterio Sr, a legend of lucha libre and the uncle of WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio, has died. On X, news of Misterio’s passing was first shared by Lucha Libre AAA.
“We regret the sensitive death of Miguel Ángel López Días, known as Rey Mysterio Sr. We send our most sincere condolences to his loved ones and we raise our prayers to heaven for his eternal rest.”
Miguel Ángel López Díaz initially trained as a boxer before transitioning into professional wrestling as his physique developed. Known for his illustrious career in Mexico, Misterio also competed in the U.S., with notable performances such as at WCW Starrcade 1990, where he teamed with Konnan to reach the second round of a tag-team tournament.
Beyond his career in the ring, Misterio was instrumental in nurturing future wrestling stars. In 1987, he co-founded a gym alongside Negro Casas and Super Astro, training talents like Konnan, Psicosis, and his nephew, Rey Mysterio Jr. Misterio also ventured into acting, debuting in 2006 as the murderous luchador El Mascarado in WrestleManiac, directed by Jesse Baget.
Misterio Sr. will be remembered for his high-flying offense that dazzled fans for decades. We at SEScoops would like to extend our condolences to those who knew him at this sad time.
