Alberto El Patron Says WWE Wrestlers Are “Terrified” & Reveals Why He Chose Lucha Underground Over TNA

Alberto El Patron was a guest on Pro Wrestling Illustrated‘s new podcast this week and spoke in-depth about why WWE wrestlers are “terrified” about rocking the boat. He also explained why he decided to sign with Lucha Underground instead of TNA. Here are the highlights:

Why He Chose Lucha Underground Over TNA:

“I don’t have anything but respect for TNA. They made a really good offer to me, and I’m really grateful for that. The reason I didn’t go there is because those guys at Lucha Underground helped me in all my legal proceedings against WWE. So I owed them that. It was not a matter of not wanting to go to TNA. It’s just that Lucha Underground and AAA, they paid for my legal services. They introduced me to my lawyer. And the reason I’m working right now is because of them.

Spoiler Details On Alberto El Patron’s Lucha Underground Debut

WWE wanted me to stop working in the United States for a year. And that was going to happen if it wasn’t for these guys. I’m a stand up guy. If you help me, I’ll return the favor one day. That’s what I’m doing with them. Plus, they made me a good offer.”

Why WWE Wrestlers Are Terrified:

“Now everybody’s talking about how passionate I am when I’m doing my promos in Ring of Honor and the House of Hardcore in Philly and all those other places. And all I can say is that you can feel the passion and the love because that’s who I am. That’s me. That’s the real Alberto. In the other place, I never said anything because I wanted to. And if, for some reason, I changed one line, they were all mad and would be fining me. So people need to understand, when you work for that place, you are like a robot. You need to do exactly what they say and how they say it … You could get fined over everything … Everybody is terrified. We all were—or they are—terrified of changing something or trying something new. Of course there are some exceptions who can do and say whatever they want. But that rule doesn’t apply to 90 percent of the wrestlers. ”

Alberto said he’s currently making as much money as he was during “good years” in WWE.

Al Snow On His First TNA Appearance, Vince Russo’s Influence, Getting “Head” Over

The following are highlights of Vince Russo’s new interview with Al Snow:

On how long he has been in wrestling: “May 22 will be 33 years since I had my first match in Springfield, Ohio in 1982. I have made a living in the wrestling business for almost 33 years.”

On getting his big break in 1995: “Two things: One – it was a different business… At that time, when I broke in in 1982, it was different in the sense that the locker room that would be full of talent that had been working seven days a week for 10-15 years and that’s all they did for a living… It took a long time to work your way off to get in a spot where you were put in a position to draw… The other reason was timing: I broke in 1982; Vince started the war in 1984 and started buying up all the talent. Vince went around and bought all the workers in the territories.”

On coming up with the “head” gimmick: “Chris Candido was tight with Paul E. I asked him to go to Paul E who then went to Vince McMahon. Bruce Prichard, who was head of talent relations for WWF, rolled my contract for a third year and wouldn’t let me out. I actually asked for my release 90 days ahead of time. Vince put me on loan to Paul E. Paul E. didn’t overproduce you. He had no plans or intentions to me. He was doing this as a favor. It gave me an opportunity to go some place else so somebody would see me on someone else’s TV being a star and I knew I had to do that. I found this styrofoam head in the back and it worked. It caught your (Russo)’s attention and gave me a second opportunity with WWE.”

On whether it took time for “Head” to get over: “It connected pretty quickly…I ended up dislocating my shoulder badly in a match with a wrestler. Paul E. was taking an interest with the head gimmick and was going to get me to do something in the arena with Sandman. Candido went and argued on my behalf to do a vignette. I did a vignette in the locker room where everyone was normal and I was arguing with the head. Paul E. allowed me to do them, he never wrote them or told me what to do or say. He just told me to do these vignettes and film something. I came up with the most ridiculous stuff where everything was normal in a situation and the only thing that was crazy was me interacting and arguing with the head. Thanks to Paul E. for allowing me the freedom to do it, airing it and took advantage of it.”

Russo thought Snow would stay with TNA after doing the guest-referee spot, but he never saw Snow for a long time afterwards. “That thing was the most confusing thing I have ever been involved in. I honest to God have no clue. TNA brought me in. Mick Foley was the special guest referee between Rhino and Kurt Angle. I come out of the crowd out of nowhere, get an enormous reaction, slap Mick which leads to a distraction, allows Rhino to screw Angle. I figured at least the next day at TV I would do a promo or something to explain my actions or something and maybe do a match, since we were there for three days. I could put Mick over and be done with that. I get it. I literally slapped Mick, the finish happens, and Jeff Jarrett asks me to sit in the production meeting, doesn’t talk to me all day. I’m not on TV. Doesn’t talk to me the next day. You (Russo) catch him before I leave and then Jeff talks to me and says ‘I know you’re looking for a job. We’ll figure something out’, said something vague and that was it. To this day, I don’t know what that was about.”

On Grado and British Boot Camp: “I didn’t blow him off. You don’t just get respect in this business. You’re not entitled to anything in this business. You have to earn everything in this business.. I had respect for Grado until he showed up late for an opportunity…Here’s this kid on a TV show, most people would kill just to be on a TV show. To be on a TV show to pursue your dream and get a contract and be a part of an international organization, and a platform to promote yourself. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. You’re asked to come back to work out and you show up late… I’ve been there. You’ve got to have more than a fancy entrance to get me to respect you.”

On Vince Russo’s influence on the business: “…I genuinely have nothing but the utmost respect for you and consider you a friend in this business. I’ll say this and I’ve said this before in other interviews. There are a lot of people, Vince, who owe you for their opportunity and the break they got because if it hadn’t been for you, they would have never gotten it.”

Bobby Lashley On TNA’s New TV Home, Bobby Roode, His Future In MMA & More

The following are highlights of a new Radio Yorkshire interview with Bobby Lashley:

On being the TNA Champion: “I’m really proud and really happy about the year I’ve been having, just to come back here and win the title before the UK tour, being able to defend it in the UK is a great experience, I really like the opportunity that TNA are giving me.”

On Destination America: “I love the fact we are on Destination America, we were all for it, we knew Dixie would make the right decision and she did, right now since we have worked with Destination America, they have been on our side helping us out with what we do, I think they are trying to build and we are trying to build, I think we will build together.”

On Bobby Roode: “I think we had great matches, moving forward we will have more great matches, I am looking forward to the real Roode vs. Lashley 3.”

On MMA: “I will continue with my career in MMA, I have a contract on the table right now with Ballator, I’m just trying to figure out what I need to do, I just want to make sure it’s right with TNA as well.”

Gunner Speaks On His TNA Debut, Early Days In Wrestling, Randy Savage & More

The following are highlights of a new Main Event Madness Radio interview with TNA star Gunner:

On his start into pro wrestling and being in the military: “I did 4 years in the Marine Corp from 2002-2006, I was a Machine Gunner, I was on top of the truck with the ring mount, with the .50 cal or whatever weapon I had and I did my time. I actually started wrestling in 2001 after I got out of high school and went into the Marine Corps in 2002 and I wrestled the whole time I was in the military unless I was deployed. I was stationed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina and would travel 13-15 hours round trip, sometimes more every weekend, to do local independent shows in South Carolina, Georgia, and North Carolina, kinda all over, something I did while I was in the military.”

On his TNA debut: “You know, I started with them we did the security thing, me and Murphy with Immortal and backstage it was really cool, and I know that certain individuals, we all had the belief that when TNA started it was all about the younger talent, I know I’ve talked to fans and you get people’s input here and there, but they really wanted to see TNA flourish and thrive on that young talent. You had AJ Styles, Christopher Daniels, Frankie Kazarian, James Storm, Bobby Roode, all these guys who started in Impact Wrestling were all the younger talent and they helped build the company into what it is now and I think it was one of those things where the younger talent was put on the backburner a little bit so to say, but now it’s picking back up a lot more. I do think there was a little animosity there, for me I looked at it as an opportunity, I was getting to work alongside Hogan and Flair and for me, it was a learning experience.”

On his biggest influences on his character: “A lot of the times and a lot of the things I do and wrestling’s about, I don’t wanna say stealing, but rehashing certain things and I’m a huge Macho Man fan, he’s always one of those guys I still watch, still study and to me, he was way ahead of his time, his aggression his promos and even as a babyface, he never changed his intensity. A lot of his stuff and growing up I watched Triple H, which was one of my favorites and I loved to watch him sell, whether it be in a match or in a promo and his reaction because he always got people really invested and I could sit here and name names all day of guys I really loved, but Macho Man was one I still really enjoy and love to watch and learn from.”

Update On Havok’s Status With TNA, Angelina Love Reacts To Velvet Sky’s Firing, Knux Joins Twitter

– Havok’s appearance Friday night at SHINE Wrestling’s SHINE 24 internet pay-per-view led to speculation that she could be gone from TNA Wrestling since talent are typically prohibited from appearing on iPPV or televised pay-per-view events for other promotions. On Saturday, TNA Wrestling executive Bob Ryder squashed rumors of Havok being gone from the company.

In response to a fan question on Twitter asking to clarify her status, Ryder wrote, “Not sure why this continues to be an issue. She will be at our February tapings.”

– After helping Robbie E capture a Feast or Fired briefcase, Robbie offered ownership of the case to Velvet Sky. Friday night on Impact Wrestling, Velvet opened the case to learn that she had retrieved the fired briefcase. Effective immediately, Velvet Sky has been released from TNA Wrestling. – Knux of The Menagerie is now on Twitter at bookmikeknox and seeking independent bookings.

Christopher Daniels Talks Potential TNA Return, Destination America

Christopher Daniels spoke to NOEentertainment.com this week and commented on whether he would ever return to TNA. Daniels gave the old “never say never” answer, but it doesn’t sound like he’s optimistic about it.

“I don’t think so, not at this moment. I’ll never say never, especially when it comes to my livelihood and it would be very selfish of me to say that I’d never work in a company, in any company, when that company could conceivably be the best choice for my family. So I’ll never say that I’ll never work for TNA again, but the truth is right now with all my focus on Ring of Honor and trying to build that brand up, you know, make it more high profile, make more people aware of it. I just don’t think if I were to return to TNA that it would be a step in a different direction, and that’s not really where my interests lies.”

He also commented on TNA’s rocky 2015 as they begin a new chapter on Destination America:

“The last 6 months for TNA have been very tumultuous were very unstable and I’m glad to know the people I care about, my friends that work there, I’m happy to know that they’re with Destination America and they got more of a streamline focus for their future, that their doing well and I hope they do well.”

Abyss Interview: His Loyalty To TNA, If He Regrets Not Signing With WWE

TNA star Abyss recently spoke with Donald Wood and the Ring Rust Radio crew. Below are some highlights of what he said about:

TNA Joining Destination America:

“The locker room was excited. We hadn’t seen each other in a little while because we had a bit of time off, so everybody was super excited to get back to work and perform in the ring. It was fun to see the enthusiasm and the excitement as we embark on this new venture with Destination America. It’s not really that much of a difference as far as the atmosphere. It’s a different network and there are different expectations and different things that we want to accomplish, and I’m sure Destination America wants to accomplish, so we’re feeling each other out and understanding each other’s goals. From that standpoint it’s a little different, but other than that, it’s very much business as usual.”

The Evolution Of His Character:

“I’m so proud of the evolution of the Abyss character throughout the years. Longevity in this business is not something that a lot of talents get the privilege to experience, and I’ve been able to do that. To see the character evolve like it has from its roots with Jim Mitchell to the different phases of the character: the insane asylum character to working with Hulk, and then you throw in some of the Joseph Park stuff, I’ve had a lot of support along the way. My relationship with Dixie goes all the way back to early 2003 and everything she has provided, the tools for me to be able to showcase myself on that platform. David Lagana and Matt Conway, the writing team, have been fantastic in coming up with new angles and new ways to present the character. It’s been a great team effort. I’m more proud of the fact that I’ve been with TNA since 2003 than any belt I’ve ever won or any accomplishment I’ve been able to do in the ring. Being a part of the Impact team for well over a decade is something that I’m extremely proud of.”

His Loyalty to TNA:

“Being a part of TNA since the beginning is something that I’m extremely proud of. Not to say that other places aren’t good places to work – I’m sure they are – but for me, the decision to stay was due to the fact that I love TNA. I’m TNA through and through; I always will be and I’m proud of that. I did have opportunities to go to other places and I’m proud that I was afforded those opportunities, but the reason that I stayed was for loyalty. The company has treated me fantastic over the last decade-plus years that I’ve been there, from Dixie to everybody there. I’m happy there. I wanted to stay and be a part of something that I started with from the ground up. There’s no other place in the world I could have gone and said that, so that was the reason that I stayed and I have zero regrets. If I had to do it over again 100 times, I would do it 100 times.”

If He Regrets Never Signing With WWE When He Had The Chance:

“I absolutely 1,000 percent would make the same decision again. I absolutely have no regrets whatsoever. Being a part of TNA since the beginning is something that I am extremely proud of. I’m not saying other places aren’t great places to go work, but for me the decision to stay on that occasion and several others is that I love TNA. I am TNA through and through and I always will be. I did have opportunities to go other places and I am proud that I was afforded that opportunity. The reason I stayed was for loyalty and no other reason. Not stage fright as Tommy joked in that interview, it had completely to do with the fact the I love TNA through and through. The company has treated me fantastic over the decade plus years I have been there. From Dixie to everyone there I am really happy there. I wanted to stay there and help build the company, be a part of something that I was with since the ground up. There is nowhere else in the World I could go and say that. That was the reason that I stayed and I have zero regrets. If I was asked to do it over again a 100 times I would do it 100 times.”

The movie also features Mark Wahlberg and Linda Cardellini. The scene was filmed during the Los Angeles Lakers vs. New Orleans Pelicans game.

TNA Tapes Lashley-MVP Street Fight, Briefcase Reveals For Impact Wrestling

TNA taped some fight scenes in the streets of New York City at the Impact Wrestling television taping in early January. A segment is scheduled to air on Friday’s edition of the show that was taped outside with the idea of presenting a street fight between Bobby Lashley and MVP.

Dixie Carter On TNA Challenging WWE, If She Regrets Losing AJ Styles & More

The following are highlights of a new What Culture interview with TNA President Dixie Carter:

If TNA could ever challenge WWE like WCW did: “Absolutely, I think we can be in that position or we wouldn’t be in business today. We’ve got some exciting things on the horizon and our television partners worldwide are really stepping up and are committed to growing our brand, and that’s a big part of it.

In the United States, we have one, two hour television show every week and we want to be developing the programming and doing some exciting new strategic things to grow our company in ways that we’ve never even had the opportunity to do in the past. So 2015 and beyond looks very bright for us.”

If she regrets losing AJ Styles from TNA: “Of course, I regret [it] and I miss a lot of people who are no longer a part of our roster, but I think that’s what so great about our company is that hopefully, at some point, he will be back, and so will others. I look at this past year with Matt Hardy returning and Low Ki returning, and Rhino and so many others.

I think it makes for great TV and when they came back, all the characters were so fresh, and besides, AJ was so synonymous with TNA, and to me, he’ll always be a part of our family.”

Her gender being an advantage or disadvantage in the industry: “To me, it’s been an absolute advantage. I think, in the first several years, people didn’t know quite what to make of me. I’m a very positive person and a very different personality to what they had experienced in the industry before. You know, I really care about them and I care deeply for this group of people who work for us and for the fans of the show and I think it’s an absolute advantage in corporate meetings and behind the scenes with the talent.

There’s just a different perspective, I think sometimes. I mean, I can deal with a man, I have no problem, I’ve done that my entire career. It just gives you a unique perspective, it’s helped me and played to my advantage many times.”

Her thoughts as she was about to go through a table: “My head was a complete blank, honestly! It was very surreal. I was in Los Angeles last week and I was watching a video highlight reel that Discovery had put together for Destination America. I was watching all the different episodes and the crazy things that I had done last year, and, you know, I was looking at that person going “Who is that?” [laughs], and then I see her about to be powerbombed from the top rope through a table….to me today, it’s so very surreal.

I just tried not to think about it and tried not to worry about it and just do it. I felt like, every single day, I’d sit behind the cameras and watch…and to our company and our fans and our television show, I just felt like it’s the least I could have done, to show them how much I respect what they do and just a small way of saying thank you. I don’t think I expected to break my back, but at least it makes for a good story now!”

The one thing she would change from her past in TNA: “Oh wow, I’ve never been asked that question before! I think the thing I would change would be to realise that just because someone’s been in this business a long time, doesn’t mean that they have the magic silver bullet that’s going to change everything. People who’ve been doing this successfully in the past, and their experience, doesn’t necessarily mean that that will work today.

Times have changed, viewing habits have changed, social media has changed so much about the world we live in today, and how we experience life. I think I would have not put so much stock in that, and would have looked beyond for fresher outside ideas earlier.”

Manik Responds To People Saying Working For TNA Is A Career Killer

Over the weekend, it was reported by Dave Meltzer that ROH and Lucha Underground star Alberto El Patron turned down an offer to work for TNA that would have made him $400,000 per year. Meltzer speculated that the AAA World Heavyweight Champion did not want to work for TNA because doing is is perceived as a ‘career killer.’

TNA star Manik has responded to that report, explaining how working for TNA has changed his life. He tweeted:

the rumor is wrestlers consider tna a career killer.

how bout u bud Because of TNA I bought a brand new 3 story house, 2 nice cars, and boatloads of shoes, and put a bunch in my savings, and I just signed a 2 year extension and got a raise….4 years ago I was homeless.

Forget saving my career, being here has saved my life and helped me take care of my extended family who was struggling as well.

But it’s not trendy to some ppl so I guess none of that stuff counts right?

News On TNA Positioning Themselves As A True Alternative To WWE

With TNA’s move to Destination America, the company is in the process of changing a lot of things about the Impact Wrestling show as well as the overall philosophy of the company.

As part of this new era, TNA officials are working on several changes to the product in an effort to position themselves as a true alternative to WWE.

TNA President Dixie Carter has said in recent interviews that the changes to Impact will be rolled out over the next several weeks, so the show will continue to evolve and will eventually have a very different feel than it did on Spike TV.

Report: TNA Tried To Sign Edge For Destination America Premiere

Former WWE Superstar Alberto Del Rio is not the only big name that TNA reached out to in hopes of delivering a major surprise at last week’s Impact Wrestling premiere on Destination America.

After talks with Del Rio fell through, TNA reportedly reached out to WWE Hall of Famer Edge, who appeared on WWE RAW just two weeks ago.

According to a report at PWInsider.com, the negotiations between TNA and Edge didn’t really go anywhere and money was never discussed. TNA sent out feelers but Edge wasn’t interested.

The hope was that Edge would come in as the new TNA authority figure, since Kurt Angle surrendered that role to return to active competition.
