  • Jake Roberts Speaks On Trying To Buy TNA, Wanting In 2014 Royal Rumble

The following are highlights from a recent WGD Weekly interview with Jake “The Snake” Roberts:

On the possibility of buying TNA: “I want to run an Indigogo and raise the money to buy that son of a bitch and do it right. Not to be in competition with Vince, but to do wrestling the way I liked it. Maybe it will happen, maybe it won’t. But, now I hear the guy from Smashing Pumpkins is snatching it, so maybe I should just buy the band Smashing Pumpkins and go on with my life and start singing.”

On how he would run TNA if he were able to purchase it: “I got all the thoughts, bro. There ain’t nobody better at that. I would make it simple, there would be good guys and there would be bad guys. There wouldn’t be no bullshit and there wouldn’t be twenty minute interviews. We would actually, ‘rassle…the world needs it, man.”

On he wants in the 2014 Royal Rumble match: “All I can hope for right now, you know, I’m trying to get myself in shape to do the Royal Rumble, one last time…You know, I’d like to go out on my own terms with my head held high, I think I deserve that. I’ve had thirty seven years in the ring and it was a wonderful life, it was crazy, insane, I did a lot of things wrong, but I did a lot of things right too, brother.”

On turning down Vince McMahon in 1984: “Vince McMahon had tried to hire me before when I was with Georgia Championship Wrestling, because he bought out Georgia Championship Wrestling from some individuals at the time. He tried to hire me and I did my stupid shit, cussed him out, called him a fag, and that’s not a cigarette by the way, and told him to shove it up his ass and walked out…then…I was back asking the man for a job.”

On a classic Andre The Giant story: “One instance that was pretty horrifying for me, it was his birthday and we were up in Montreal…he had quite a few bottles of wine, and a couple bottles of vodka too. We got in the ring and there is something you never want to see if you are an opponent, and that is a playful fucking giant. It’s dangerous…if they are giggling and they are hopping around, so, I think, ‘my god, are you fucking serious, what am I gonna do now?’…during the match, we would usually do a spot…he’d grab both ropes…and he’d squat down on me, it looked great, it normally didn’t bother me at all, but this night hi hand slipped off the rope and he adjusted every frigging vertebrae in my body…I just couldn’t believe it, it knocked the breath out of me, then I turned on my side and all of a sudden I felt my shoulder vibrating, I’m thinking, ‘What the fuck is that?’…and he is laughing…Dave Hebner came over and said, ‘Andre, what are
you doing laughing’…’I’m farting,’ he says, and my shoulder is vibrating, I don’t know what the world record for a fart is, but it was well into the thirty second range, and the stench, it would have gagged the maggots. My first thought was to get up and paint brush the son of a bitch, but, I quickly got over that.”

On his memories of traveling with a young Undertaker early in his WWE run: “He came to me and he says, ‘I hear you know all the great strip joints,’ I said, ‘yes, I do, worldwide,’ he says, ‘I’ll travel with you’…so, he tried to hang with me, and it’s a chemical world, so I was cheating. After about three or four weeks, we went to TV and Vince looked at him and said, ‘Mark, I don’t think you need the makeup today, you look like hell. Jake is killing you and a few days later, he was in the hospital with alcohol poisoning. Finally, I had to smarten him up and tell him how I was doing it, and we then became very, very good friends. I have all the respect in the world for Mark. He has earned everything that he has gotten. He is a unique character, I love the fact that he upholds kayfabe, just a great guy, and of course he was there for the stripper times with me, and we did it well.”

Dixie Carter Sports Illustrated Interview: Budget Cuts, Hulk Hogan’s Effectiveness, “Reality” In Wrestling & More

TNA Wrestling was profiled by Sports Illustrated today, including an interview with TNA President Dixie Carter. Here are some highlights of what Dixie Carter said about:

The “Impact On The Road” Experiment: “We went on the road thinking if we could sell 1,500-2,000 tickets, we’d be good. We went in with a very conservative budget. We didn’t come out here thinking we’d sell out arenas. The truth is we exceeded those budget numbers. We hit our revenue numbers, but we overspent when it came to loading out of the Universal studio. There was a two-month overlap that cost us.”

“We have to try different things. Going on the road to see if this is the thing that changes the whole feel and vibe of the show, if it works, you stick with it. I think we’ve learned a lot from this. We learned that the show has to be shaken up, not the venue.”

Incorporating “Reality” Into TNA Storylines: “Fans want to see things they think they aren’t supposed to be seeing.” Specific to her heel turn, Carter said she and TNA Creative “thought it would be best to let a little more of the company’s reality bleed into the show.”

Talent That Was Released Due To Budget Cuts: “They didn’t resonate. They didn’t move the needle or the contract they wanted wasn’t something that was good for this company. Sorry, but this company has to be in business 10, 20 years from now. I have to run a company and grow it. I’m to the point right now where things have to be a certain way for us.”

Hulk Hogan: “I think Hulk has been worth it. He’s opened a lot of doors for us. When you’re about to lose a deal in an international territory and one phone call from Hulk Hogan makes a man who doesn’t even speak your language melt and you get your deal back, that carries a lot of weight. There’s not another guy out there who could do that.

“If we did anything wrong with him, we used him too much on television. If he stayed with us, you’d probably see less of him.”

Panda Energy: “Once we got on Spike, we changed a lot of things and our revenues grew. We’ve been cash flow positive for the last four or five years. After that point, Panda stopped putting money in the company. We’ve funded it with every dollar we’ve made and maybe that’s kept us from growing quite as fast.”

Surrounding Herself With People Who Know The Business: “That’s all any business is. You don’t have to know wrestling. You’ll know wrestling eventually, but business is about making good decisions, putting good people around you and managing them.”

Samoa Joe was also quoted in the article, saying this about Dixie Carter’s job running TNA:

“In some aspects, yeah, I think she might be (too nice). In other aspects, I think it’s refreshing. I don’t think she’s too nice in that she’s not aggressive and won’t do the things that need to be done. She sticks by people, maybe to a fault sometimes. I’ll give her that. What some people say is a character weakness, others will say it’s a strength. It just depends on how you perceive her.”

Also interviewed for the TNA profile were Jeff Hardy, ODB, Spike TV President Kevin Kay and others.

Latest On Hulk Hogan & TNA, Update On Top ROH Star To TNA, TNA Attendance

    – There has been absolutely no discussion in TNA of signing Hulk Hogan to a deal, even one with limited dates. Hogan being gone is considered a cost-cutting move by the company, as they simply couldn’t afford his price.

    – As of this past weekend, there has been no deal struck between Roderick Strong and TNA. At this point, Strong remains committed to Ring Of Honor. Apparently TNA executive Dave Lagana has been talking with Strong as well as other potential new talents. TNA seems to be interested in the best independent workers in the business, including those in ROH and some of the Americans in Japan.

    – The November 7th edition of TNA Impact Wrestling from Cincinnati drew approximately 1,500 fans.

  • Huge Backstage Update On The TNA Sale & Potential Buyers

According to sources, one group that was rumored to be looking to buy TNA, which was a company that circulated online but never the lead candidate, has pulled out.

A different group, which met with TNA executives a few weeks ago and has been the key party still interested, is still in play. While it may seem on the surface that the TNA sale is a non-issue at this point because nobody seems to know anything, and nothing new has popped up online about it, the main company is still in the mix and are talking positively about making the deal. This group is looking for complete and total ownership and apparently the key in finalizing the deal is whether or not they feel the asking price is fair.

There has been some talk that the Carter family is wanting to raise capital by selling a percentage and retaining a majority ownership of the company, but the aforementioned group still in the running is apparently not interested in a minority ownership.

Jeff Jarrett, who has reportedly picked up a considerable amount of power in TNA lately, would be expected to gain even more power if the sale takes place, since he’s more than likely a big factor in getting the deal going.

  • Christopher Daniels Talks Bad Influence, Staying Relevant, TNA, Hulk Hogan & More

TNA star Christopher Daniels recently spoke with Donald Wood of Ring Rust Radio (Audio). Here are some highlights of what the “Fallen Angel” said about:

Being in Bad Influence with Kazarian: “It all came around when Frankie and I decided to tag together about 2 years ago. We saw the writing on the wall about the tag team division in TNA, Beer Money had just split up and the Motor City Machine Guns had been injured, so we figured there wasn’t a whole lot of stuff going on with us in terms of the singles ranks so we decided to give being a tag team a shot and TNA let us do that and got us involved with the whole storyline with AJ Styles. While that was going on, Frankie and I just decided to be ourselves on camera, on the microphone and in the ring. We’re pretty smart-ass/snarky guys backstage, we’re always goofing off and being ridiculous and we just put that out there in front of the camera and we were fortunate enough that the fans responded to it and latched on to it. It’s just really been a matter of going out there and really, in my mind anyway, go out there and even if it’s just a 30 second promo or a backstage vignette or whatever it is, try to do something where it catches peoples’ eye or catches their ear or gets them talking so hopefully at the end of the night, after two hours of Impact Wrestling, one of their high points is ‘Oh Christopher Daniels did this’ or ‘Bad Influence did this’ or ‘Frankie Kazarian did this’ and that’s been the goal. We’ve been trying to be noticed out of the two hour shows and be talked about.”

Reinventing yourself over the years: “Well the wrestling part of it, not to diminish it, but that’s not really the hard part, to be honest. I’ve always tried to, in terms of physical action, keep myself at a certain level and been fortunate enough to work with guys that push me to stay there. But it’s been the in-ring stuff that I’ve been trying to sort of, not capitalize on, but concentrate on a little bit just because that has always been the criticism against me, that I wasn’t a ‘character that people could get behind’ or whatever the case may be. And so I decided to heck with all that and I was just going to have fun and I’ve been fortunate enough that people have caught on to it and have enjoyed it and the more that they enjoy it or the more that there’s a buzz about it, the more I’m going to continue to do that.”

If he is a comedy character: “I don’t really feel like I’m doing comedy, per say. I play off of guys a certain way but I don’t really do a lot of comedy in the ring. I’m just being a smart-ass and people laughing at it but I hope they’re also getting annoyed at it and that they want to see me get my comeuppance in the ring. I’m not trying to be like a Santino character where it’s all comedy all the time or mostly comedy all the time, but I’m still trying to be that smart-ass wise guy that people want to smack around. So I don’t feel like comedy is the basis of my character but if I have to be or I want to be entertaining, especially in things that aren’t in-ring related, it’s easier to get people to enjoy what I’m doing by trying to be entertaining versus being the angry, serious, ‘I’m gonna get you’ guy.”

Influence of Indy Wrestling on his career: “Working in as many different promotions as I did in the past I felt like it helped me become well-rounded and versatile. I wasn’t sure who I was going to wrestle at any given moment, and it was always different guys in different places and different promoters, so it made me become comfortable in myself to the point where it didn’t matter who I wrestled that I could get a good match and make the promoter happy that he had booked me for that particular spot. Part of that is now that I’m with TNA, I’ve become so comfortable with the guys, but at the same time they are the best in our company. Those are the guys that are pushing me to stay in top shape and continue to learn and continue to grow as a wrestler. I think that part of the Indies is being trained on the Indies and making you that versatile and it’s going to get you prepared to step up and get into the national spotlight quicker than staying in one place and wrestling the same people over and over and over again.”

If he is disappointed about TNA possibly leaving the full time road schedule: “It’s not disappointment, we understand the game. We gambled and went out on the road and I think there were positives and negatives to that move. I felt like it definitely freshened up the look of our product and being in front of new fans every night I definitely felt the energy when we were going live and traveling around. But at the same time, we have to do what’s best for the company, and if that means going back to a central location, and taping certain times and getting on the road when we can, then that’s what we need to do. Impact Wrestling is in it for the long haul, they’re not looking to burn out all at once, we’re trying to stay in it long term, and these are the decisions that are made above my head in terms of the long term benefit of our company. So it’s not disappointment it’s more of an interest to see where we go from here, how we’re going to be received when we go back to Orlando for the next set of tapings that we do, and see what happens. It all depends on the product we put out. No matter where we are whether we’re in Orlando or where we are on the road, the most important part is the storylines and the wrestling and are we trying to hook that fan base into continuously coming back and making us a priority to watch.”

Thoughts on playing Curry Man: “It was just different. It was part of being entertaining. Whether I was the Fallen Angel trying to be entertaining by being the serious wrestler out there to win every match and get all the titles or just Curry Man being the guy that was out there having fun and bringing smiles to the fans’ faces, it didn’t matter to me it was a matter of getting people’s attention and trying to get them involved and get them invested in the wrestling. So it didn’t matter to me whether it was the serious guy or the comedy guy, if I was getting people involved and invested in watching wrestling then it’s a win-win situation for both of us.”

If he thinks TNA should try to bring back Hogan: “I think Hogan, with his name, brings something to the table at TNA. The real question is how much is it worth and how much do we pay for that? When you say there could be improvements made, like how much money do we put towards those improvements? And how do you make those improvements? Those are questions that our creative team and the guys that are running the ship are asking themselves every day and I think if it was a set plan I think we would have followed it but it’s something where we have to try different things and do different things. So they’re trying different things and trying to see what sticks and see what profits us best and if they decide that Hulk is profitable, not just monetarily butinvestment-wise, then great but that’s something they are going to decide.”

IMPACT WRESTLING PRESENTS “TURNING POINT” ON SPIKE TV THURSDAY, NOV. 21 AT 9/8 CT

LIVE AND FREE ON SPIKE TV, “TURNING POINT” FEATURES EXTRAORDINARY “WHEEL OF DIXIE” MATCHES

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Nov 18, 2013) – An action-packed two hours of Pay-Per-View wrestling is coming your way this Thursday, Nov. 21 as IMPACT WRESTLING presents “Turning Point” live and free on Spike TV at 9 p.m. ET. Broadcasting live from Universal Studios in Orlando, Fla., a hub of IMPACT WRESTLING LIVE! and #IMPACT365, Dixie Carter continues her furor with “The Phenomenal One” AJ Styles as she seeks to crown a new World Heavyweight Champion.

“Turning Point” will feature two incredible TNA World Title Tournament matches, with stipulations determined through a spin of the “Wheel of Dixie.” The scheduled matches include a “Falls Count Anywhere” match between Magnus and Samoa Joe, and a “Bull Rope” match between former tag partners “The Cowboy” James Storm and “The IT Factor” Bobby Roode. In addition, a grudge match between former Aces and Eights member, Mr. Anderson, and Aces and Eights President, Bully Ray, is on the card.

“At ‘Turning Point’ on Thursday night, I will treat Samoa Joe like any other opponent, because he stands between me and the world title,” said TNA Superstar Magnus. “Now that the Main Event Mafia has disbanded there are no alliances. It’s every man for himself, and I’m confident I will be the last man standing in the ring.”

Fighting to get past the first round of the tournament, Magnus and Samoa Joe put their Main Event Mafia allegiances aside as they battle one another in a “Falls Count Anywhere” match where pinfall is permitted outside the ring and any object in reach can be used to the wrestler’s advantage.

In the second TNA Word Title Tournament match of the night James Storm and Bobby Roode will battle it out in a “Bull Rope” match. Confined to opposite sides of a rope, the restraint and anything tied to it can be used as a legal weapon.

As the World Heavyweight Title hangs in the balance, so does the future of Aces and Eights. At “Turning Point” former Aces and Eights member Mr. Anderson will square off against President of the Club, Bully Ray in a grudge match to determine the future of the brotherhood. The Main Event of the night will prove the bitterness and dislike Mr. Anderson and Bully Ray have for one other, as the two clash in a high-stakes battle with the future on the line for both. Should Mr. Anderson win, Bully Ray will be dethroned and the Aces and Eights will fall. If Bully is victorious, Mr. Anderson is to never show up in the wrestling ring again.

    * Former TNA Announcer Talks About The Company’s Chances Of Longterm Survival

Scott Hudson Talks About TNA’s Longterm Survival, Russo-Ferrara

Former WCW and TNA announcer Scott Hudson was recently interviewed by WGD Weekly. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

TNA’s chances of survival on long term basis: “At this point I would have to say they want to because they are making the cuts and making the business decisions that they have to make to get to that eventuality. But, in a business climate like this where scripted sports entertainment is suffering even at the highest level and with their pay roll and their business model and their pay scale, I think it’s going to be tough. If they continue in my opinion it’s going to be as a much scaled down version of what they have now. Not to say they can’t make it, but if they get into another year from now, say twelve months from right now if they are still around, it will be a much different looking company than what you see now.”

The backstage vibe on WCW hiring Vince Russo and Ed Ferrara: “Eric was the one who gave them (the roster) this mega bucks deal and they were making a lot of money with creative control over what their character was doing and how many dates they were working, and now the guy who was making that deal was gone, and their cackles are up, they are ready to get into a fight with the corporate hiercy at WCW at the time. And then here comes Vince [Russo], and Ed [Ferrara], and Bill Banks, all three of them came down from WWF, guy that they didn’t know who are they gonna push, who are they friends with, who do they hate, so you had all this kissing up going on. Kiss you on the cheek in the front, stab you in the back with a knife, that was going on everywhere in WCW and the sad truth is, none of that was necessary, because Vince, and Ed, and Bill, and eventually Eric all got along and we all just wanted the company to succeed. Those four guys were gonna be terrific together, the creativity and the management there would have been of the charts, but the talent was so frightened of losing their spot and their money and their control, that it just became almost like a tornado inside the dressing room.”

Personal views on Eric Bischoff and Vince Russo: “First, I want to say you won’t ever hear me say anything bad about either Vince or Eric. I had nothing but a great relationship with both of them to this day, in 2013; I would follow them into battle. If they wanted to start up a new company and they wanted me in, I’d be there. I had zero problems with either one of those men and I would do whatever they wanted. I just think the world of both of them.”

AJ Styles Receiving International Booking Requests, DDP Explains Why He Left TNA

    – TNA is reporting that AJ Styles is receiving booking requests from wrestling promoters in the UK, Puerto Rico and Canada following his “unsanctioned and unauthorized” TNA World Heavyweight Championship title defense at the Wrestle-1 event in Japan this past Saturday.

    – Diamond Dallas Page recently spoke to the RCWR Show about what led to him leaving TNA back in 2005. DDP said the following:

“Uumm, money; hahaha. I came back for one reason, to show that I could still go at 49. I was 49 years old when I was bouncing around out there like that in TNA and I wasn’t about the same weight I was at 44, not the same but I wasn’t that far off. I just really wanted to come back for that one year, you know, rack it up, have some fun matches, you know, make some money and then when it came time to renegotiate the contract we just didn’t agree and I was like no big deal, thank you very much, I had a great time. I was really done. I didn’t have the run I wanted in the WWE, obviously. I did have a great little run with Christian, we had a great WrestleMania but you know, two and a half years later I wanted to show that DDP could still go and that was the only reason that I did it. It was more about showing that what was possible with DDP yoga than it was about being in the ring, so I obviously had lived the dream on a whole different level at WCW and I make a lot of money. I wasn’t going back for the money, of course you want to make a lot of money but I’m not going to beat up my body unless I’m making a certain number because for me to risk hurting my knees anymore or for me to risk hurting my back, my hips and my ankles, for me its pivotal that my body be in the best shape that I can be in. I don’t want to be broken down and beat up like so many of my other brothers.”
