AJ Styles On Stars He’d Like TNA To Sign, Hulk Hogan, Bound For Glory & More

The following are highlights from a new TSN interview with TNA Impact Wrestling star AJ Styles

On people he would like to see signed by TNA: “They’re overlooking the guys who deserve a shot at the world title, who have the talent to be a world champion. They don’t have to come from that other place [WWE], they can come from the independents. But we have to leave the door open for young guys to come in and get a chance. Let them be their own guy instead of a cookie cutter like they get at that other place. From the independents, Delirious has been one of my favorites for a long time. I’d like to see him signed. I also miss Alex Shelley. He and [Chris] Sabin, as the Motor City Machine Guns were a great tag team. I would love to see him back.”

On the change in his personality over the past year: “I think it’s a personality that everyone has. You reach a breaking point, you push the right buttons, and you see this guy come out that you never knew you had in you. I got pushed over the ledge and it turned me on, turned me into this new guy. A little more aggressive and a lot more drive.”

On his thoughts on working with Hulk Hogan: “[Hulk] Hogan can open up doors that we normally wouldn’t be able to open without that. He adds experience and it’s been an experience working for him.”

On his match with Bully Ray at Bound For Glory: “I’m going to leave it all out in the ring. These people paid their hard earned money to see two people beat the crap out of each other in the ring. Be ready to be entertained and maybe even have your breath taken away. Hard-hitting and a match that you’re going to remember. I have to be more focused than ever. Bully Ray will have to kill me if he wants to beat me. And I just don’t think that’s going to happen.”

Bully Ray On Whether TNA Should Re-sign Hulk Hogan, How TNA Can Improve Its Product, His Prime, More

Promoting tomorrow night’s Bound For Glory pay-per-view evemt, TNA World Heavyweight Champion Bully Ray appeared as a guest on Busted Open Radio, hosted by Doug Mortman and Dave LaGreca (Busted Open Radio airs every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sirius 94 and XM 208), where he discussed a number of TNA-related topics. Highlights from the interview are as follows:

Whether Bound For Glory is the biggest pay-per-view in TNA history: “I don’t know, is it? When we go out there as wrestlers and we see seats in the arena not full, it worries us also but all we can do is go out there and deliver the best possible in-ring product we can. Once we go through that curtain, that’s when our jobs really start. I’m not the promoter of TNA, I don’t work in the front office of TNA, I’m not responsible for the advertising of TNA, I’m not responsible for the product awareness of TNA, that’s where TNA needs to grow and move forward as a company with bringing their product to the masses so people will want to come to the shows. Yes, there are empty seats but still if you concentrate on the in-ring product and you concentrate on what you see, it’s still entertaining.”

Coming into his prime: “No. I never think that far ahead. Not that I take things day-to-day, my success in the wrestling business never really shocked me. I’m not going to sit here and tell you that I always knew that I was going to be successful and be part of one of the greatest tag teams and this and that, I just knew that I loved professional wrestling so much that I would have enough passion to make myself successful. I would have enough passion to do this for a long time and I’m going on my twenty second year now in the business. I’m proud of myself getting into the shape that I have got into, I’m proud of myself for doing something that not a lot of other guys can do which is come out of a tag team and have a successful singles career. I’m also proud of my ability to go in there which just about anybody on the roster and have a great match, great fight, a great speaking segment and proud for being able to entertain people for this long. I’m only stepping on the gas half way. I have so much more that I can bring to the table but it’s a different world we live in and its different time with wrestling and sports-entertainment these days. I think I can go further, I can be a lot more physical. There are a lot of things that I can do and I try to wait until the right time to do them. From the newest kid on the block to the guys that have been there forever and I have said this before, TNA has the best locker room in pro wrestling, best bunch of pro wrestlers slash sports entertainers out there. These guys are capable of so much. You want icons? We got (Hulk) Hogan and Sting. You want guys that are still in their prime? You can go with me or Jeff Hardy or Kurt Angle and then you got the work horses. The guys that carried the company from TV to house shows like A.J. Styles, Bobby Roode, James Storm, Gunner, (Frank) Kazarian, (Christopher)Daniels. You have the hottest women in the business that can wrestle. You got great X-Division stars. Anything you are looking for, you can find it.”

How can TNA improve its standing in the wrestling industry: “I have my opinion on that. I know as a wrestling fan what I would like to see TNA become. It’s strictly my opinion. I think the professional wrestling world is primed and ready for a more edgy product. An in your face, very realistic brand of pro wrestling. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying ECW all over again. It’s not what I mean. However, I am talking about bringing in bits and pieces of the greatest eras of pro wrestling. The NWA in the 80’s, ECW in the late 90’s, Attitude Era, the best times of TNA. Let’s cut and paste from the best times and let’s incorporate that into our product now, because I think people want a more mature product.”

Should TNA re-sign Hulk Hogan: “I would like to see Hulk stay with TNA. Two reasons: First for selfish reasons, I want to get him in the ring in the worst way, and kick him in his face. Secondly, Hulk is a great ambassador for pro wrestling and he can be a great ambassador for TNA. Do I see Hulk on TV every single week? No. Do I see Hulk in major storylines? No. But I think there is a place for the Babe Ruth in our industry. There is a place in the locker room as a part of this company. Mainstream media loves Hulk Hogan. You start saying Hulk’s name, people get interested. So I definitely think he would be a great person to keep around for those reasons. For the amount of money Hulk makes, he brings a lot of exposure. People are going to sit back and say “wait the ratings haven’t gone any higher and there is low attendance at house shows”. That’s not Hulk Hogan’s fault, that’s product awareness. That’s where I think our money can be spent a little better. Only in my opinion and my opinion comes from being behind the scenes at all the companies that I have wrestled in. Product awareness is number one. You can build a better mousetrap but if no one knows you have it, nobody is going to buy it. So I think if TNA can get their brand to the masses better, that’s when you will see the real change.”

His thoughts on the current Aces and Eights angle: “This has been the hand that was dealt. This is the way it is. I look at this situation like I look at any other situation in this business. You have two choices, you can fold or you can play it to the max. No matter what the situation is, I’m going to play it and I’m going to play it to win. What you see is me, Knux and Garrett. Everybody has been talking about how the Aces and Eights are folding. There is trouble in the Aces and Eights. They are imploding from within. Maybe that’s what I want you to think. Maybe on Sunday you’re going to see something completely different. I can make you believe what you want to believe. That is one of my gifts. Everybody thinks they know what’s going on. Everybody knows how the story is going to end. Everybody thinks they have seen the last of Aces and Eights. I would call the cable company and order Bound For Glory because you just might be shocked at what you see.”

Chavo Guerrero Interview: What Would Eddie Guerrero Think Of Today’s Product?

In a recent interview with The Daily Star out of the United Kingdom, TNA Impact Wrestling performer Chavo Guerrero spoke about what he feels the late Eddie Guerrero would think of today’s pro wrestling product.

“I don’t think he’d like it too much the way it is now, because it is hard for a young wrestler to get that seasoned experience,” noted Guerrero. He continued, “You can disguise it all you want with explosions and pyro and entrances, but when it comes down to it in the ring, it’s you and that other person. That’s it.”

Guerrero concluded, “People don’t get the chance to travel these days and learn how to wrestle, how to perfect this art.”

Kurt Angle Speaks On His Connection To WWE, New Face Of TNA, Hulk Hogan, BFG

The following are highlights from a recent Busted Open Radio interview with TNA Impact Wrestling star Kurt Angle:

On how he feels after rehab: “I feel great. I’m a lot healthier now and a lot more clear minded. I feel a lot better right now. I needed the break. I needed to do what I did and I feel a lot better now.”

On going through WWE sponsored rehab and his connection to the company: “The WWE program has been amazing. They have done a lot for me and they continue to. I work with them still. They’re amazing at what they do. They have had so many guys go through recovery and still are in recovery. We have a weekly chat every Wednesday night at 7pm. It’s really beneficial for everybody.”

On whether or not he felt pressure to return in time for Bound For Glory: “No. I didn’t think I was going to be a part of it. I found out last week. I’m very glad I am, but I was supposed to be inducted into the Hall of Fame and that was pretty much it. I’m very excited to be working with Bobby Roode. I think he is the best wrestler today and to have a match with him at Bound For Glory is going to be amazing for me.”

On what he has learned about himself throughout recovery: “Basically putting God first. Realizing my whole life has been revolved around me and high expectations of myself and never really enjoying what I have done and what I have accomplished, whether it be in the Olympics or in pro wrestling. I have never really been satisfied. It led to a lot of depression and turmoil. It’s about going easy on yourself and patting yourself on the back every once in a while, which I’ve never done. With anything it’s putting things in perspective a little bit. What I do is a job. My marriage and my kids are more important than that. I don’t think I ever looked at it that way until now.”

On what it’s like coming back to TNA after a lengthy absence: “There was a lot of uncertainty. Thank God the company is still going. They’re still kicking it in high gear, but hearing about the changes from the outside in looked a little scary. But once I got to TV last week everybody is still giving their highest performance and doing the best that they can. Everybody is working hard. We need to unite as one and try to make this a better product. I think we have done that the last month or two. I love the Dixie heel turn. I think that was awesome. It comes down to the writers in creative and the wrestlers really coming together and making it a full team effort.”

On whether or not he feels this is the most important Bound For Glory in history: “I believe it is. Right now we need a great show. We need a five star show. It’s only going to help us. With the changes we have made we have to prove to the fans that we have the ability to have that five star show. We HAVE to have one.”

On changes he would make if he were in charge of TNA: “I would have a better way of organizing things. I would have a lot more rehearsal. I would have talent come to the ring every hour of the day and just rehearse and go over and just ram it down their throats so that they have it right when they come to the show that night. We have been doing that. Have we been doing it enough? Yes and no. But I don’t want it to become, and it’s not in any means a WCW, but you don’t want it to become where the talent says what they want to say and the story isn’t going to go anywhere because the writers and the talent aren’t really talking. I don’t want it to become that. I want it to become more organized like the way Vince McMahon runs the show. That’s how I was brought in and for seven years that’s how I was taught. I believe TNA is going in that direction now.”

On whether or not he would re-sign Hulk Hogan: “Oh yeah! A lot of people would say no but look what this guy has done for wrestling. Anytime he goes out he gets the loudest cheer. It doesn’t matter if he is wrestling or not. Hogan is a talent you want in your company and I have a lot of respect for him. I didn’t have a lot of respect for him when he first started, but I really didn’t know him because I didn’t watch wrestling when I first started. But getting to know him and seeing what he has done for the business, I would say heck yeah, you want to sign that guy.”

On who he feels is the next face of TNA: “I really like Magnus right now. I love his promos skills and his wrestling has gotten a lot better. I would really love to re-push Samoa Joe. He is a cornerstone of the company and sometimes I feel like we are not utilizing him right. That guy can carry the company. He can carry any company. AJ Styles has done a tremendous job, but when you look at the young talent, there are a lot out there that have the ability. Right now stepping up it’s hard. I love Bobby Roode. James Storm is another guy we have kind of thrown by the wayside a little bit. He has talent up the wazoo. Those are the guys I believe will be the future.”

Huge Backstage Update On TNA’s Plans For Kurt Angle After Bound For Glory

Former TNA Knockout Talks Desire To Work In WWE, Total Divas, TNA, New Movie

The following are highlights of a VOC Wrestling Nation interview with former TNA Knockout Thea “Rosita” Trinidad:

On her new movie, “Army of the Damned”: “Tommy Dreamer introduced me to the producer and director, who were wrestling fans. As soon as he saw how Dreamer and I interacted, they decided (to pair us together). It’s really cool; we have a great cast and I feel like everyone was picked perfectly for their roles. There were some scenes in there where I was legitimately scared. I can’t wait for everyone to see it. The movie will be available worldwide on January 14.”

On her career aspirations: “I’ve always loved acting, and I always thought that acting was just getting me prepared for wrestling, but then I fell in love with it. I’m going to pursue acting, but I’m going to keep up with wrestling because I don’t feel like I’ve accomplished everything that I want to accomplish yet.”

On having a desire to work in the WWE: “Absolutely. Since I was four years old, I knew that this was something I wanted to do. This was my dad’s dream as well. He took me to WWE events as a child all the time. I knew from a young age that this was something I wanted to do – being the women’s champion, working Wrestlemania. Some people get into wrestling because they want to do it for a living, they’re happy working the independents or just wrestling anywhere, and they don’t care about working for WWE; for me, I’m not fully (fulfilled yet) in my wrestling career. Plus, I’ve only been doing it for 5 years and I have a long way to go.”

On working with big names in TNA: “It’s incredible. Walking into TNA and seeing everyone I grew up loving was such an amazing experience. Hulk Hogan was my dad’s favorite. Last 9/11, I got the chance to talk to Hogan for an hour about our experiences with 9/11 (Thea’s father passed away during the attack). I walked away from that conversation thinking, “wow, I just got to talk to Hulk Hogan. It’s validation for me that I’ve made it, and I’m proving people wrong that said I could never get there.”

On her relationship with TNA: “I didn’t leave on bad terms. The door is never closed. I don’t have any bad feelings toward anybody, and I will never burn a bridge. Tommy Dreamer got me my tryout, Terry Taylor signed my contract, and D’Lo was there with me from the start. My best friends were made at TNA. I have amazing memories.”

On “Total Divas”: “I do watch it. I met Naomi in 2010 when I tried out for WWE. She is such a star. I also have the utmost respect for Nati. (WWE is) putting so much into their up and coming talent and I think it’s great.”

Will Hulk Hogan’s Sex Tape Affect His Potential Signing With WWE?

Apparently all current WWE talent have moral clauses, and the company directive is that talent that have inappropriate photos or videos in the public will not be hired as on-air performers. Whether or not this becomes an issue with negotiating with Hulk Hogan, who has a sex tape that is out in the public, remains to be seen.

Of course, with Hogan, there is a double-standard due to his star power, and it could be viewed as a different situation in that Hogan was allegedly unaware that he was being filmed, and didn’t condone its’ release in the first place.

AJ Styles Interview: How He Would Run TNA, If He Is Staying With TNA Long Term

TNA star AJ Styles spoke with Mike Riker and Dave Lagreca on SiriusXM’s Busted Open to hype Sunday’s Bound for Glory pay-per-view. We posted the first batch of interview highlights here yesterday – the following are more of what AJ Styles said about:

The journey through the past year: “Well, it’s definitely been a journey.  The ups and downs. The roller-coaster that has been A.J. Styles. Going from wrestling James Storm and Bobby Roode and having it all on the line and couldn’t wrestle for TNA World Heavyweight Title, it could have been James Storm or Bobby Roode or myself. Lucky me, I had the opportunity to lose that match and it really set me in a different mindset and losing to Christopher Daniels in a match that I should have never lost but when your head is all screwed up as it was, it send you to a whirlwind of “I don’t knows and I don’t know who I am” and problems occur and its reality and that’s what happens to a lot of people in life. They may lose their job, they may lose a marriage and stuff like this happens. Sometimes people forget who they are and what’s there purpose in life and that’s the same thing that happened to A.J. Styles.”

Deserving the respect: “I do and that’s what bothers me a lot, that I didn’t get that respect and when I called Dixie (Carter) out about it, she showed her true colors. She has shown who she really is. She’s a snake. She’s a money hungry person.  She’s out for “what’s best for Dixie”, not for what’s best for the boys, what’s best for the company and what makes her the most money and if you don’t, well, she’s going to cut the fat.”

Being relied on: “What was bothering me was is that, you called on me every time you needed someone to take you to the next level to have that great match, you called on me. Then when it wasn’t called on me than what’s the deal. Then I realized for a second, I’m pissed off because I like being the go-to guy. I want to be that guy. Now that you are not giving me that chance, it’s pissing me off. That’s basically what I was saying. I enjoy being that go-to guy. I love being the guy that you’re going to give the ball to when it’s fourth down. I want to be that guy you give the ball to and I think a winner wants that. They want the ball in their hands when the championship is on the line or when the match is on the line but that fact that I wasn’t getting it is what really bothered me.  You talk about not being in the main event, that’s exactly what I’m talking about here. I want to be the go-to guy but if you don’t give me the opportunity, how can I do that and what is stopping you and it was stuff like that, that really bothered A.J. Styles through the whole thing.”

Top priority resigning with TNA: “Here is the reality. I love TNA. I grew up there. It’s who I am. You said it before when people think of TNA, they think of A.J. Styles. I take pride in that. But something has to change and I want to be there. I don’t know any other way to say it. I love the place. I’m not saying I love what happened to it but I love that place and I want to see it grow. I know we have the talent. We have everything we need. The puzzle is not put together yet but once you get those pieces in there, you will see how it connects. Then you will be like: “Wow, we really got something” but we need someone in charge that knows what to do with it once they see what’s going together well.”

Changes if A.J. Styles was in charge: “Well, there would be some guys that we can bring in. We need to open up. The one thing that separated TNA from the beginning was the talent. The fact that they were from all over the world, from a lot of different states, having different wrestling styles. When you’re from the south, it’s a little different. When you’re from the Northeast, it’s a little different.  When you’re from the West Coast, it’s a little different and that’s what was so great about TNA. We had guys from all over the nation and doing all different styles of wrestling and that’s what separated everyone else.  We weren’t cookie cutters. We were all different and I think we need to bring that back. We can’t be focused on certain people.  Don’t get me wrong, there is talent in the other place that can definitely come here and do well in TNA. But there are also talents in the independent circuit that deserve a chance too. I’m not saying they need to come here for a terrible contract to whatever it is. Give them a credible contract and come in here and show these people what they’ve been doing on the independents and doing well. We got to open up that door for younger talent to come in here because I was one of the first guys here and I’m getting older.”
