Joey Ryan Discusses His Release From TNA, Reveals The Gut Check Process, Teaming With Matt Morgan

Joey Ryan spoke to ITRLive concerning his time in TNA and subsequent release from the organization last week. Below is an extensive recap:

How he got into TNA: “Through David Lagana. I worked with David Lagana in a few places actually Ring of Honor, NWA Hollywood and then he booked me for Ring Ka King in India. Then he got hired to be a writer in TNA and they were looking for guys. He suggested me to Al Snow and Al Snow saw footage of me and decided to make me a GutCheck contestant.”

“It kind of happened quickly. They called me up and Al Snow asked if I would be interested and I said yes. He said, “Alright, I’ll see you next week”. There wasn’t anything I had to sit on really.”

On TNA Gut Check: “They literally don’t tell you anything. I was the second ever guy to do GutCheck. The first GutCheck was Alex Silva. There was that whole thing where Ric Flair changed his decision on Alex Silva. You see, I don’t know how much of that is really a shoot or not. I think they brought me in particularly to be a “No” because they just needed somebody from the indys to make this seem more legitimate and told “no.” I think that was a work on their part.

“I think when I wrestled and I had a good match against Austin Aries, thank God I had to wrestle Austin Aries, then I came in and did my promos and stuff like that, even before I was in front of the judges, they weren’t telling me I was going to get a “No”, but I had a few people telling me things. Like Eric Bischoff and Hulk Hogan came up to me and said, “Hey, we like your look, we think you are good. No matter what happens out there, we want to do something with you hopefully down the line.” They were hinting that I was going to get a “No” vote.

“I was already going in there portraying a heel character so I knew going into this that I wasn’t just going to go out there, be told “No” and walk away with my tail between my legs. I’m going to be adamant about it. I was going to be myself, a guy who has been told “No” for the last 12 years by major companies.

“After I did that promo, there was talk of me going around. They were saying to themselves, “How can we use this guy?” Before that, there was nothing planned for me.”

Backstage following the Gut Check segment: “Well I don’t know if they do this anymore but there were cameras all over the place. Everyone was still filming me. I had an argument with Al Snow in the back. Was it a worked shoot? I don’t know. He was yelling at me, I thought it was pretty intense. I knew cameras were on too so I wasn’t sure.

“Once the cameras cut, Eric Bischoff approached me and told me, “That was incredible! That’s what the segment should be! That’s what live TV is all about!” He has a producer’s mind. He was the one who came up to me and was the most vocal about it all.”

On Taz backstage following the Gut Check: “Taz is kind of a hard-ass. I think he knew but I don’t think he liked me right off the bat because of that. He’s a prideful person, he is very proud of his wrestling and I was bad-mouthing his wrestling. I think he got to the point where he realized that I was doing anything I could to get a job.”

On signing with TNA: “I actually got a call from Bruce Prichard the next day saying, “We got a contract for you”. I signed it and faxed it back to them. At that point, I don’t really know if they knew where the storyline was going to go at that point. They just wanted to capitalize on any hype that happened.

On teaming With Matt Morgan: “Don’t know, it was a little hard to pull off because Matt is this unstoppable monster. I’m just this small guy. Matt would just look stupid if I just keep costing him all of these wins. I don’t think it went the way they planned it. I don’t know if this didn’t go the way they planned or if they just didn’t think about how long they could keep this up. It just gets to the point where you think, how long is Matt going to stick with this guy that isn’t winning.

“We were tagging against Chavo and Hernandez. I think they used me as a fall guy to keep Matt Morgan protected.”

On the negative rumors about TNA contracts: “I had a great contract. I got a monthly salary and a bonus whenever I did wrestle. So yeah, I had a great contract. They said, “Hey, I want to pay you” and I said, “Great, I like getting paid.”

On his release from TNA: “I knew there had been some office cuts and to be honest, I knew after the Matt Morgan stuff as they used me so sparingly. I think I did a PPV match that was unannounced. I did the referee stuff with the Knockouts. Then I did the random X-division 3-way match so. When I wasn’t being used, I was at home collecting paychecks, so I kind of knew that this was too good to be true. They are paying me to sit at home for months now.

“Part of me said, I know Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff like me so there’s some pull there so maybe they are waiting to come up with something for me. I got the hint myself when I was just sitting at home getting paid.”

On being notified of his release: “Al Snow called me and said “This isn’t anything against you or your work, this is just budget cuts”. I know they are on the road now and that’s much more expensive. I think they are just trying to make the company as profitable as possible.

“It was a decision they had to make. They had to cut guys without affecting the current storylines. I’m not bitter about it. I understand why. I don’t have anything bad to say about anyone there. It’s just a business thing.”

*Spoilers* Impact Wrestling Tapings Results For July 4 and July 11

Impact Wrestling broadcast airing on July 4

* They had an opening segment with Hulk Hogan to set up the main event. Noteworthy coming out of this is that Suicide is no more. TJ Perkins’ persona is now known as “Manic.” The main event is X-Division champ Austin Aries vs. Manic vs. Chris Sabin. All three made appearances to set this up.

* AJ Styles defeated Kazarian with his submission. Short but great. Bad Influence were dressed like Siegfried & Roy.

* TNA Knockouts champ Mickie James promo with a ladder to set up Gail Kim vs. Taryn Terrell ladder match “next week.” Winner of that will be the new number one contender.

* Big O has been eliminated from Gutcheck. Ryan Howe will face the Judges later tonight.

* Hernandez defeated Jay Bradley after Chavo Guerrero’s distraction. Not much to this.

* Backstage, Aces & Eights vow to take care of Austin Aries tonight.

* TNA Tag Team champs Gunner & James Storm defeated Robbie E & Jesse Godderz. The finish was screwy so they did it a second time.

* Sting promises to prevent any Aces & Eights interference in the main event.

* In a Bound for Glory Series bout, Jeff Hardy defeated Joseph Park by DQ Park was busted open in the mouth and when he saw his blood, he snapped and nailed the referee with a Black Hole Slam. Mostly good but a few mis-steps by Hardy.

* Ryan Howe was turned down by the TNA Judges. This got the biggest pop of the night. Howe was booed unmercifully by the crowd, which Judge danny Davis acknowledged. David voted yet. Bruce Prichard and Al Snow turned him down. The place became unglued for that. Seriously.

* Chris Sabin defeated Austin Aries & Manic to capture the TNA X-Division championship in 14:37 with Cradleshock off the second rope on Aries for the win. Aces & Eights took out Manic after Doc powerbombed him on the floor. The Main Event Mafia hit the scene to ward off A&8. There were “TNA” and “This is awesome” chants. The show ended with Sabin vowing to defeat Bully Ray for the title.

Impact Wrestling broadcast airing on July 11

* There will be three Joker’s Wild Tag Matches as part of Bound for Glory Series.

* AJ Styles & Samoa Joe defeated Jeff Hardy & Joseph Park in 4:48 when Joe forced Park to tap out to the Kokina Clutch. Good for the short time they had.

* Magnus & Mr. Anderson defeated Jay Bradley & Hernandez in 3:55. Anderson wouldn’t tag in, leaving Magnus to work solo. Magnus schoolboyed Hernandez for the pin.

* Aces & Eights cut a promo about the Five Guys in the Main Event Mafia. MEM came out and challenged them to a fight next week in Louisville. Aces declined. MEM said Bully Ray will be defending his title next week. They vowed to reveal their new member tonight.

* Kaz & Bobby Roode defeated Daniels & Austin Aries. A great 6:20 match. Daniels broke up a Kaz pin to tease dissension. Kaz small packaged Daniels a few seconds later for the pin. Bad Influence teased a split but left together.

* All the winning teams enter Gauntlet tonight. Winner of that gets 25 points in the BFG Series.

* Gail Kim defeated Taryn Terrell in an awesome ladder match to become the new number one contender for the TNA Knockouts championship in 11:36.

* Magnus pinned Bobby Roode to win a six man Gauntlet in 15:02. Really good.

* Hulk Hogan came out and put over Chris Sabin, who came to the ring. Aces & Eights came out and Bully Ray warned him not to cash in at Destination X next week. Sabin cut a great promo saying he pinned 3D in Team 3D’s final match and he was the only one to ever kick out of 3D. Sabin handed Hulk Hogan the X-Division title to cash in. The Main Event Mafia came out and declared that no matter what, it would be one on one next week. They introduced Rampage Jackson as their newest member. Jackson was there dressed in street clothes but did not do or say anything. That appeared to have been the end of Impact.

TNA Knockouts Tag Team Championship Deactivated?, Madison Rayne Rants On Miss Tessmacher

– The TNA Knockouts Tag Team Championship has apparently been deactivated as the the official website of Impact Wrestling is no longer listing the championship on its roster page.

Last week on Impact Wrestling, Knockouts division executive Brooke Hogan stripped ODB and Eric Young of the title due to Young’s male gender. There was no further announcement made concerning the belts.

The championship was created in 2009 due to the roster depth of the Knockouts division at the time. Sarita and Taylor Wilde became the inaugural champions in September of that year, besting Madison Rayne and Velvet Sky in the finals of a four-team tournament. The final champions, ODB and Young, held the titles for a record 478 days.

– Madison Rayne “spills dirt” on Miss Tessmacher in this week’s “Knockout Blog” as she rants on the fellow former TNA Women’s Knockout Champion’s high-maintenance ways.

Rayne writes, “This week, you are going to get a little behind the scenes 411 on the one and only, the Knockout who is more high maintenance than anyone else on God’s green earth, Miss “ass-gusting” herself, Miss Tessmacher! I’m not quite sure where to even begin with this girl.

“The beauty of feuding with just about every Knockout in the locker room is that I’ve seen how they act on the road, I’ve seen the inside of their gear bags and this girl takes the cake when it comes to needy and finicky! For starters, everywhere she goes she packs a foam roller and a rolling pin?! The roller I can understand. We all get a little beat up from time to time and need a quick fix before the next match. But a rolling pin? I don’t even WANT TO KNOW! I also know that she wears the exact same under garments for every big match. I hope her pretty little brain can efficiently work a washer and dryer. Maybe she just buys stock in the same bra, socks and… never mind. Again, I don’t even WANT to know!

“One thing I do want to know though, is WHY I have caught her on more than one occasion warming up for a match by “booty popping” to Baby Got Back? Really? I need to sit some of these ladies down and give them a lesson on class and elegance! Not hyping themselves up to the lyrics “you can do side bends or sit ups, but please don’t lose that butt!” Thinking about all the things Tessmacher does that drives me insane is going to give me a wrinkle!”

Rayne also addresses Brooke Hogan, who she feels is making poor decisions as Knockouts division executive. To read her full column, click here.

Paul Heyman Responds To Dixie Carter Wanting To Do A TNA vs. WWE Event

During a recent interview with DigitalSpy.com to promote Sunday’s WWE Payback pay-per-view, WWE TV personality Paul Heyman commented on Dixie Carter recently tweeting that she’d like to do a TNA vs. WWE pay-per-view event. Heyman understands where she’s coming from, but thinks WWE would be crazy to work with TNA.

“I’m sure that Dixie Carter would love to do a WWE versus TNA PPV. Why wouldn’t she? A friend of mine who has way too much time on his hands just started a new beverage company here in the United States… He would like to do a global promotion with Coca-Cola. I don’t suggest that Coca-Cola would be profitable having to do a global co-promotion with Shmuley’s Soda Company. In the same way it would make no sense for WWE with 95% global share to do an event with TNA with its 5% global market share!”

  • Paul Heyman Talks About His Relationship With Vince McMahon

Heyman also responded to whether CM Punk is the best wrestler he’s ever worked with:

“Well, that’s a very interesting question. CM Punk is the best in the world and he is the longest-reigning WWE Champion of the past 25 years. His goals are to be recognized as the best in the world, so on that basis, yes. Brock Lesnar has different goals from CM Punk, and Brock Lesnar achieves his goals with me, together, as a unit.”

“So I could not honestly state that CM Punk’s success is any greater than Brock Lesnar’s success. Nor could I state that Brock Lesnar’s success supersedes CM Punk’s. These are individuals with dramatically different goals and they both achieve them.”

As for which WWE superstars should headline WrestleMania XXX in April 2014, Heyman says he’s got the perfect special attraction match in mind:

“I have a very standard answer for that because it’s the most genuine answer I can give someone. I think the main event for WrestleMania 30 should be a battle for the WWE Championship against the World Heavyweight Championship, to unify the titles.

And that match should feature Brock Lesnar versus CM Punk, with Paul Heyman advising both men and therefore getting a percentage of the profits of both sides of the main event at WrestleMania.”

AJ Styles Involved In Altercation With A Fan, Future Of Aries & Roode’s Team

– Based on what we saw on last week’s episode of Impact Wrestling, it appears TNA is dissolving the tag team of Austin Aries and Bobby Roode. The former tag team champions suffered back-to-back losses at Slammiversary and this past week’s Impact and have been wrestling singles matches at TNA live events. Both men will be competing independently in the TNA Bound For Glory series, which culminates at October’s Bound For Glory pay-per-view.

– TNA star AJ Styles was involved in an altercation with a fan at this past weekend’s TNA live event from Aiken, South Carolina, according to a report at PWTorch.com.

While approaching the ring, Styles was heckled by a fan. AJ grabbed a steel chair and got in the fan’s face, telling him to come over the guard rail and fight him. After the exchange, Styles briefly went back into the ring, only to exit and continue jarring with the fan. Styles continued encouraging the fan to head to the back with him where they could fight, but the fan ultimately backed down.

Styles would then go on to defeat Bobby Roode using his new Calf Killer submission hold.
