Bobby Roode Talks About TNA’s Growth, His Historic Title Reign, Who He Wants To Work With

Bobby Roode was recently a guest on the Wrestle Shark radio show with hosts Simon Cassidy and David Thomson. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

His thoughts on the growth of TNA being one of the few remaining “TNA originals”: “Immensely. I mean we have Sting here now, Hulk Hogan, people that have come into this company over the past several years is pretty amazing considering how young our company still is. We’ve grown so much talent wise, television wise, international pay-per-views, our company is only just a little over ten years old and every year we’re getting bigger and bigger. It’s just great to be a part of it all.”

On how he first got started in TNA: “I got a phone call from Scott D’Amore, I believe he was part of the creative process at TNA along with Jeff Jarrett at the last minute to be part of the Team Canada for the X-Cup Tournament in 2004. I flew in, did three pay-per-views and the rest is history. I impressed the people I needed to impress and they sent me home with a contract. I signed it and here we are today: basically I was a last minute replacement.”

Roode’s thoughts on his record setting world title reign for the company: “Starting back when I first broke in in 1998, being the world champion was something I always aspired to be. I think if you don’t want to be the world champion then you’re in the wrong business. I think everyone needs to want to be the best of the best, and in 2012 I was finally able to cash in and win that world championship, and make history with it. It was a great feeling and I look forward to being world champion again.”

Did his world title reign live up to his expectations?: “Absolutely. I got to do all the extra media, I came over to the UK last May, I went to Australia… and of course getting to work main events, competing with all the top guys: the Angles, the Hardy’s, the Stings, on not just TV but Pay-Per-Views and all the live events all around the world, just to carry the load and carry the company on my back. And that’s what the world champions job is: to be able to go out every night and compete at that level and have great matches. I think I was able to live up to that and if I was given the opportunity I think I would be able to do so again. A little experience on my side now. You know, that first run everything is kind of shiny and new. The second time I hope to take what I learned and be that much better.”

His thoughts on how the roster has changed compared to when he first came in: “I think you can compare our roster to anybody in the world. I mean when you look at the guys like Austin Aries and Zema Ion who just came in. Even the guys who are really untapped in their character, like Robbie E., I think we have such depth in our locker room and it’s only going to get better. Once these guys mature and get a little more spotlight…I don’t think anyone in the world can touch our roster.”

On who he would still like to work with: “I would love to get into a program with Kurt Angle, we had the match at Bound for Glory which was kind of a one and done deal which was quickly forgotten about, so I would love to sink my teeth into something creatively with Kurt. Samoa Joe is another guy that we’ve been in this company together for many years and never had a chance to do anything creatively together. We had a chance to fight last year at Manchester for the title and I think we just had great chemistry and could really do something great in the future.”

Gail Kim Discusses WWE vs. TNA, State Of The Knockouts Division, Would She Like To See Awesome Kong Return?

Gail Kim appeared on the Big WrestleShark Show with Simon Cassidy and David Thomson, where she discussed her career to date, WWE vs TNA, the current batch of Knockouts and much more. The Big WrestleShark Show airs LIVE every Tuesday night at 10:00 p.m. on Pulse 98.4 or PulseOnAir.co.uk. Highlights from the interview are as follows:

Being the first ever Knockouts Champion and what it means to her: “Oh my gosh. Every time people ask me what is the favorite moment of your career, for most people it’s really hard, but for me it’s easy. Being the first Knockout champion. Because we fought for that division, I mean when I first came in I had to wait about a year and a half before we started wrestling. When they told us they were bringing in a womens championship, we literally screamed out loud in the arena. You just never know what’s going to happen. At that time we had about five girls, and they weren’t all wrestlers. Then all of a sudden they bring in about ten girls and you never know what’s going to happen when you bring in ten people. They all got hired and it was pretty much an overnight success.”

If they can replicate the initial success of the division: “Definitely. It was magical. I always account Scott D’Amore, who was the female agent at the time for a lot of that magic. Then you had me and Awesome Kong: that was the best programme of my life, the feud of my career. Even to this day, I say those were the best those were the best years.”

The current batch of Knockouts: “Well there’s not many of us left to be honest. I heard someone say there are 10, but I’m not sure there’s even that many. The recent ones who have just departed like Rosita, Sarita… you know there’s still Velvet and Tara, but they’re all so talented. And they really highlight us, when you see us you always know it’s gonna be a great match.”

If she would like to see some old faces return: “Oh definitely, everyone always says ‘oh I would love to see Awesome Kong come back’ and I’m just like ‘aww man, I dunno if my body could take that [laughs]’. But you know there are so many talented girls out there… I would loved to have wrestled Sarita as we’re both very Mexican influenced, but maybe someday.”

How ‘the competition’ does things: “In terms of the women’s wrestling, you can clearly see we are given more time, the girls’ athletic ability is highlighted more over here. That’s what I’ve always loved, being in the ring and wrestling. So for me, personally, I prefer it here. I’ve experienced both companies, twice, and I definitely prefer my time here.

“In terms of the company as a whole, WWE has been around forever and Vince knows what he’s doing. Here, we’re a family and we’re just striving to get to that point. We have a very talented group of athletes and a great office who are very encouraging and supportive. I think eventually we will get to that point we want to get to.”

Garett Bischoff/Monday Night Mayhem Interview (.MP3)

Interview highlights courtesy of Kahlil “Paterson” Thomas, MNM’s correspondent & contributor:

The Aces & 8’s plans for Lockdown at The AlamoDome in San Antonio: “I think it’s going to be one hell of a wicked night. We’ve got Lethal Lockdown, and we’ve got my brother (Wes) Brisco getting in there with Kurt (Angle). It’s going to be interesting, but The Aces and Eights always have an extra ace up their sleeve. You never know what we will come up with.”

His relationship with Wes Brisco: “(Wes) Brisco and I are very close. He’s ‘my brother from another mother.’ He and I go back a little than anybody really knows. Bully Ray Talks About Being A Babyface & Working With Hulk Hogan

TNA star Bully Ray was recently interview by the UK’s The Sun newspaper. Here are some highlights of what Bully said about:

Working As A Babyface After Being A Heel For Years:

“You guys in the press like to use words like heel, babyface, good guy and bad guy. I’m not a heel and I’m not a babyface. I’m not a good guy and I’m not a bad guy. I’m me. Whatever me is at the time is what I am. The difference between me and everyone else is that if you like me, you really, really, really like me. You love me. But if you hate me, you despise me. I guess that’s a win-win for everybody.

“You’ve never seen me change who I am out there in that wrestling ring. I don’t wrestle differently, I don’t talk differently. I don’t beg the people for approval and I don’t beg them to hate me. I just am who I am. They can make the decisions.”

What It’s Like To Work with Hulk Hogan:

“I have done so much and been in the ring with so many of the greats. However, when you grow up in New York City, and you were force-fed WWF for as long as I did, and you remember the first day Hulk Hogan showed up on your television set. You remember HulkaMania happening and evolving in your back yard. Hulk Hogan paved the way for everybody. There’s a respect level that comes with working with Hulk Hogan. He’s The Beatles of our business.

“I don’t care if you think he’s not the ‘greatest pro wrestler’ in the world. Who gives a s*** if he can’t reverse an armbar? You didn’t pay money to see Hulk Hogan reverse armbars or do arm drags. You paid to be entertained by him, to see him Hulk up, do a big boot and a legdrop.”

TNA Pushing To #SaveOlympicWrestling & Encourages WWE To Help

TNA sent out the following press release on Tuesday in response to the IOC announcing that wrestling will no longer be part of the Olympics starting in 2020. The article includes quotes from Kurt Angle and Dixie Carter, who urges the entire wrestling community, including WWE, to join the fight to #SaveOlympicWrestling:

TNA IMPACT WRESTLING Raises Voice To Save Olympic Wrestling | #SaveOlympicWrestling

On Tuesday the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced “25 Core Sports” for the 2020 Olympic Games dropping one of the original Olympic sports: wrestling. Wrestling will now have to fight to remain a part of the 2020 games. TNA IMPACT WRESTLING is home to 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist Kurt Angle and is dedicated to change this decision.

The IOC stated reasoning for the decision, according to the report, was an analysis of “more than three dozen criteria, including television ratings, ticket sales, anti-doping policy and global participation and popularity.” The IOC has decided to keep recreational sports such as badminton, handball and table tennis in the “25 Core Sports” category and to delete one of the oldest Olympic sport that premiered in the first modern Olympics in Athens in 1896.

Kurt Angle is considered the best wrestler of all time to be in both amateur and professional wrestling and is gearing up to fight this decision and organize a battalion of like minds to save this Olympic sport.

“Wrestling is one of the most competitive sports in the world today,” stated TNA Superstar and 1996 Gold Medalist Kurt Angle. “Winning the gold for my country in one of the original Olympic sports was one of the greatest moments in my life.

“The wrestling community is in a state of shock with this decision– we can not sit back and allow this to happen. I will do whatever it takes and work with my company TNA WRESTLING and the competitive wrestling community to determine what we need to do to reverse this decision.”

“The news from the IOC is very disheartening to all of us at TNA as well as the tens of millions around the world who either participate in amateur wrestling or enjoy watching it in its entertainment form,” stated TNA President Dixie Carter. “We need to join together right now. We encourage our own IMPACT WRESTLING community, WWE and wrestling organizations worldwide as well as competitive amateur coaches and athletes to have a unified voice to make sure wrestling will be an Olympic sport in 2020.”
