Bischoff Interview: State Of TNA, Competing With WWE & More

TNA’s Eric Bischoff was the featured guest on this week’s live edition (12/27/10) of the award-winning Monday Night Mayhem. Bischoff Discusses Why Spike TV Canceled TNA ReAction, What He Believes Were The Changes That Him & Hulk Hogan Implemented Effectively This Year In TNA, Which TNA Superstars & Knockouts Impressed Him The Most In 2010, The Company’s Ability To Compete With The WWE In 2011, If There Could Be Changes On The TNA Creative Team In The Near Future, Repairing His Relationship With Matt Hardy If He Signed With TNA In The New Year, Plus The Latest Update On “The Hulkster” Following His Most Recent Back Surgery.

You can listen to an MP3 of Eric Bischoff’s appearance on Monday Night Mayhem by clicking here.

Interview highlights courtesy of The Mayhem’s official correspondent, Paterson from New Jersey .. Here’s what Eric Bischoff said about:

The changes he believes that himself and Hulk Hogan, both individually and collectively, implemented effectively in TNA since coming into the company one year ago:

“If you look at TNA as a brand and as a media property, I think that Hulk Hogan in particular, and to a lesser extent myself, probably brought more media awareness and industry awareness to the brand than anything they had done up to that point. I think the residual effect of that brand awareness is still playing itself out and is something that TNA is taking advantage of, and it will probably continue to do so.”

Why Spike TV decided to cancel TNA Reaction, his reaction to the news, and when he found out about the decision:

“No it won’t unfortunately. We found out toward the second-to-last day of the TV tapings we had, and Spike had decided to make a different programming decision and go in a different direction. The ReAction you see on the 30th will be the last ReAction.”

His reaction to Jim Ross’ recent comments (on his BBQ Sauce Blog) regarding TNA being able to compete with the WWE in 2011 and that TNA will “never” overtake the WWE in the marketplace:

“I agree 100 percent. WWE has been around for a long, long time. They’ve been well-entrenched and well-established in cable television for the last 20 years. It’s a television juggernaut. TNA comparatively is a Kool-Aid stand compared to Coca-Cola in terms of its resources and infrastructure. The idea of TNA ever being able to compete with the WWE, although I’ve been out there, and I’ve been promoting it as such: I believe in a lot of ways we do compete.

“There are a lot of things about TNA that are better than the WWE on an individual basis. But you can’t compare TNA as a company to WWE as a company. In that regard, Jim Ross is absolutely 100 percent right on the money. Doesn’t mean we don’t want to try. Doesn’t mean we don’t wanna swing for the fences whenever we’re given the opportunity. Doesn’t mean that we don’t want to do things that put ourselves out in front of the WWE audience, just like we did with the Monday night effort. That was something that got people to sample us. It created awareness, and that’s important for us. I don’t think anybody within TNA realistically felt we were going to compete on a business level with the WWE.”

More is contained in the highly anticipated return of “The Hot Seat,” including Eric’s candid thoughts/comments on whether there could be changes on the TNA Creative Team in the near future, if he believes he could repair his relationship with Matt Hardy if Matt signed with TNA in 2011, the TNA superstars and knockouts he believed made the biggest impression on him this past year, the latest update on Hulk Hogan following his most recent back surgery, plus so much more!

Goldust Reveals His Severe Drug Problems While With TNA

WWE talent Dustin Rhodes (a/k/a Goldust) speaks frankly and openly about his journey through the professional wrestling industry in his newly released autobiography, Cross Rhodes: Goldust, Out of the Darkness. He gives a no-holds barred account of his severe drug problems, which notably persisted during his two stints with TNA Wrestling. In the book, he admits that his issues had worsened to the point that he was using cocaine prior to matches for the organization in 2005. Regarding this, he wrote:

“Eventually, and thanks to my dad, I started working for Total Nonstop Action for $1,000 a show. He was the boss, right under Dixie Carter. TNA wasn’t doing too well at that point, but I had a job making okay money. I could drive home just about every night. All I was doing was what little I had to do in the ring, then hanging out spending my money on coke, pills, and booze.

“I started making excuses for why I couldn’t hang with Dakota. Subconsciously I probably knew I didn’t want her around me or my girlfriend because the environment was so toxic. Despite the chaos, I showed up every night for work. I have no idea how I was able to stay on point with work at that time. One of my cardinal rules was never to drink before I worked a match. I wouldn’t consider doing coke before a match either. I’d take painkillers, fine. I had been taking painkillers for so long that I had convinced myself I really need them. I was taking medicine because I worked in a tough business. That was the story I had cemented into my mind. But drugs have a way of altering everything, including the stories you tell yourself. Eventually, I started doing a little coke before matches while retaining my vow to never drink alcohol before I go into the ring, as if that was something to be proud of.”

Rhodes parted ways with TNA Wrestling after being arrested on April 25, 2005 and charged with misdemeanor battery following a domestic incident with his girlfriend at the Hard Rock Hotel in Orlando, Florida. He would return to the organization two years later as the split personality character Black Reign. He said that time was the hardest period of his life as his painkiller usage increased.

“Every morning, as soon as I pulled myself out of bed, I’d take three Vicodins or Lortabs just to get moving. I was sore and pretty banged up physically, but over time pain pills exaggerated rather than eliminated whatever pain I was feeling. It was a slow process for me to get into the day. I’d get that first rush from pills and then I’d get moving. I might do something around the house, or jump into my truck and drive to the river to work on this book.”

He continues disclosing his severe self-medication issues, which culminated with the following in early 2008:

“I was probably taking close to forty pills a day at the end. I was so desperate that I actually bought pain pills from drug dealers because I would run out long before I could find another doctor to write a prescription. If I dropped a pill and it fell into the carpet, I would spend hours down on my hands and knees trying to find it. At the same time I was drinking so much that I’d wake up dizzy and unable to walk.

“Finally, after a three-day binge, I’d had enough. It was raining, I pulled myself up and walked right out the door. The rain was pouring down and I stumbled up a hill near this house where I knew I could get cell-phone reception. Somehow, I managed to call my dad. It was four thirty in the morning. I was falling down the hill in the mud. Ta-rel (his girlfriend) was trying to hold me up. I was scared half to death. I managed to get into the house, soaking wet.

“I had found the bottom.”

Rhodes, still affiliated with TNA Wrestling, then reveals calling Ann Russo-Gordon, the liaison between World Wrestling Entertainment and talent who take up the company’s offer for rehab. He remained locked away in a rehabilitation center for thirty days to face his demons and was successful. He credits his family and WWE, which he also considers family, for helping him turn his life around. He says he has remained sober since May 20, 2008.

Talk Of iMPACT! Going On The Road, Celebs Contact TNA

– Once again, there is talk within TNA about taking iMPACT! on the road and filming episodes outside of the iMPACT! Zone in Orlando, reports f4wonline.com. Most iMPACT! shows would still take place from Orlando, but the company wants to strengthen its fan base in other markets and the occasional show would be held in small arenas in other cities.

TNA knows that one of the best ways to get feedback on their product is to judge the reaction of a live crowd – and having the same batch of fans in the audience every single week is not an ideal situation.

– TNA President Dixie Carter wrote on Twitter this week that several celebrities are interested in supporting the company’s anti-bullying campaign. She wrote:

“Several celebrities have been in contact with TNA about taking part in our Eliminate The Hate campaign – great to hear so many want to help!”

She was also asked if she was scared jumping 20 feet off a cage into rival Tara.

“Of course I was scared,” James said. “I said to myself, ‘Oh, this is amazing. Please don’t get hurt. Please don’t get hurt.'”

— On the November 18 edition of iMPACT!, Rhino explained that Eric Bischoff had agreed to re–sign him as long as he turned on the rest of EV 2.0. The following week Dreamer defeated Rhino in a Street Fight. After the match Rhino attacked Dreamer, but was then chased away by Rob Van Dam, who challenged him to a First Blood match at Final Resolution, which RVD ended up winning. On the following iMPACT! episode, Bischoff refused to give him a contract and had Fortune and Immortal remove him from the arena.

It was legitimately meant as his final appearance with the organization. Company officials wanted to re-sign him, but both sides couldn’t agree to terms as he was looking for guaranteed money. The deal, however, is open ended in the sense that he could return if he agrees to their terms.

Tara Issues Statement On BWC Fire, Consumer Watch Allegations

TNA Wrestling talent Lisa Marie Varon (a/k/a Tara) issued a statement this morning on her MySpace account regarding her custom car shop in Louisville, Black Widow Customs, catching on fire yesterday. She notes having tumors cut out of her breast when the incident occurred.

She also addressed her business being the subject of a Consumer Watch investigation on a local news station. She hinted that BWC will be taking legal action.

Below is her statement:

Thanks everybody !

Hey WPF’s !

I just want to reach out to everyone who has expressed their concern over the fire at Black Widow Customs. First, thanks so much! The most important thing is that no one was hurt. Also, our window tinter Justin walked in on the fire. He acted heroically by first warning the neighbors, then attempting to put it out himself, and assisting the fireman as they scrambled to the scene. And for those who weren’t aware, there was an ice storm the previous night, and the roads were covered in sheets of ice, but the fire department arrived very quickly and kept it from being a VERY bad situation. So much thanks to them as well. The damage looks a lot worse than it is. The weeks leading up to Christmas are obviously a very busy time of the year for any retailer, and BWC will reopen ASAP. It may be as soon as Monday, although we’ll know better later today.

A local news station has also focused on an unhappy customer recently. I know the guys at BWC work hard and and take pride in what they do. I’m confident that they did the right thing, and anyone who knows me knows that I believe that the best defense is a good offense. You’ll be hearing more on this once BWC takes action.

More importantly right now, BWC has some hard working, dedicated employees that are suddenly out of work ten days before Christmas through no fault of their own. I will personally make sure that their hard work is rewarded, and that they have a happy holiday season.

And finally, yesterday morning I was having some tumors cut out of my breast. I have had them before, and they always turn out to be nothing. But they have to be checked. They had always been tiny little biopsies. Unfortunately, this time I had to be completely put out. When I came to in recovery, I was pretty groggy. I was going through my phone, and I got a text from former WWE Superstar Domino. He asked ‘are you okay?’. So I replied, ‘yes’. Then he said,’Good. Saw the news and was wondering’. And I was thinking, how is it on the news that I’m getting my boob cut on? Obviously, he was talking about the fire, which I didn’t know about yet…

Anyway, thanks for your support, but I am fine. I am actually better than fine. Although it’s appreciated, show your concern for those who need it. This holiday season I’m counting my blessings, and I hope you are too.

Kentucky Football Player Says Tara’s Car Shop Ripped Him Off

In light of news of TNA Wrestling talent Lisa Marie Varon’s custom car shop in Louisville, Kentucky being suspiciously destroyed in a fire this morning, it occurred one day after the business was profiled on WHAS11’s Consumer Watch segment.

Antwane Glenn, a football player at the University of Kentucky, wants a refund after his car was left un-drivable following Black Widow Customs’ work on it. He contacted WHAS11 and the story was profiled on this week’s Consumer Watch.

In addition to losing $2,000, Glenn is also stuck with a dangerous vehicle. Two independent mechanics have said that he needs to put emergency brakes on it. Glenn adds that a Lexington custom car shop told him the job was poorly done.

WHAS11 wanted to find out if the car was unsafe, so they took it to an unnamed Louisville mechanic, and didn’t tell him where the work was done.

“Okay, the suspension on this vehicle has been raised with a special raise kit, which raises it somewhere between 7-12 inches,” explained WHAS11’s car expert. “That is very dangerous and this car cannot be driven like this.”

Varon’s husband Lee, who co-owns Black Widow Customs, said the company’s work has received awards on a regional and national level, but due to pending litigation, could not comment on the report. The report noted Glenn has not filed suit, and indicated it may have been Black Widow Customs filing action.

Lee said he’s willing to fix the car and says it’s the same offer he’s made from the beginning. However, Glenn said he no longer trusts Black Widow Customs to fix his car. “I’ve got football practice and I’m preparing for my finals,” explained Glenn, “Not to have a car is really stressful.”

The story can be accessed here.

Investigators Looking Into Suspicious Fire At Tara’s Car Shop

Firefighters and arson investigators were on the scene today of a business fire of TNA Wrestling performer Lisa Marie Varon’s (a/k/a Tara) custom car shop in Louisville, Kentucky, according to ABC’s Louisville affiliate WHAS11. Black Widow Customs was the subject of a Consumer Watch investigation on WHAS11 yesterday.

The fire was put out but firefighters say it is suspicious.

An employee claims when he arrived to the shop this morning, it had been broken into and vandalized and that there were several small fires on the ground near a car inside. The entire inside of the store was destroyed, according to the employee.

Investigators say they are looking into the fact that Black Widow Customs was featured in a WHAS11 Consumer Watch.

There were no injuries in the fire, although several neighboring businesses suffered smoke damage.

New Angle For Tara, Reason For Hamada’s Departure From TNA

— As reported earlier, Tara suffered a torn ligament in her elbow when she took a bad landing on her arm during her Steel Cage Match with Mickie James last week on iMPACT!. She will continue appearing on television while she heals as she will be using her cast as a foreign object.

— Regarding Hamada’s recent departure from TNA Wrestling, she was not fired as it was her decision to part ways with the organization. She headed back to Japan in October and wasn’t interested in returning.

— In response to rumors that she has parted ways with TNA Wrestling, Taylor Wilde noted on Twitter that she will clear them up in the near future.

She wrote, “There are a lot of rumours flying around right now, and I promise to clear them up in the upcoming weeks. For now, lets just roll with it!”
