Hulk Hogan Lowers His Expectations For 1/4 iMPACT! Rating

After being publicly linked to a 3.0 ratings projection for the upcoming 1/4 edition of TNA iMPACT!, Hulk Hogan scaled back his claims in an interview with the Toronto Sun.

“Jan. 4, we’re going head to head with WWE,” said Hogan. “We’ve got to pick a fight. I don’t know what’s going to happen that night. If we get bodyslammed by WWE, we’ll get back and go at them again.”

As WWE RAW rarely posts a rating in significant excess of a 3.0, there is no way TNA would be “bodyslammed” if it posted such a figure (in fact, as there is a finite limit to the pro wrestling audience size on Monday, a 3.0 rating for TNA would almost definitely mark a victory for the number two wrestling group).

Hogan thus appears to be lower the expectation for his initial impact, instead hoping analysts focus on the big picture benefit he–and those wrestling standouts who accompany him in TNA–will bring to the table.

Hulk Hogan makes his live TNA television debut during a special three-hour iMPACT! on January 4. The TNA show will go head-to-head with RAW for at least two hours that Monday.

Abyss Set On Fire Video, Jeff Jarrett’s TNA Status

TNA founder Jeff Jarrett was backstage at the television tapings in Orlando, Florida this week. There was no formal reintroduction of Jarrett from management, nor any type of update on what his position with the company is at this time, according to prowrestling.net. One source did say having Jarrett back was ackward, considering nobody knew what his specific role was, and whether he actually holds any authority. For those wondering, Jarrett is still a minority owner in the company and has been back in the TNA office for several weeks now.On this week’s iMPACT!, a segment aired where Mick Foley convinced Jarrett to return to TNA television next week.

Also on this week’s iMPACT!, TNA hyped an The angle that was considered “too graphic for Spike TV.” TNA has since released some shocking footage from Thursday afternoon of Abyss being set on fire by Raven and Stevie Richards. According to the TNA website, Abyss was hospitalized with “severe burns covering his entire left leg.” Check it out:

– With January 4th shaping up to be an eventful night, WWE’s top star will not be appearing on WWE RAW for the “Monday Night War.” WWE champion John Cena will miss the January 4th edition of Raw (from Ohio) because he’ll in Arizona for the Fiesta Bowl coin flip to promote Wrestlemania XXVI.

– In related news, there has been no talk of making the January 4th edition of RAW a three-hour broadcast yet. While many within WWE management have taken notice of TNA’s Monday Night iMPACT! special, Vince McMahon is said to be “no-selling” the move and is not giving the imprsesion that he feels threatened in the least.

— The most recent issue of WWE Magazine has an interview with the Bella Twins answering questions on psychic links between twins, “the creepy girls” from The Shining, one day battling each other for a WWE championship, and more. When asked how people can tell them apart, they replied with the following.

“I have two beauty marks on my chest, and our faces are shaped differently,” Brie told WWE Magazine. “We joke that I have more of a banana head, and Nikki has an apple head. She has the bigger booty, too, which she’s proud of.”

Nikki added, “Oh, heck yeah! I carry way more curves than Brie. And I usually have a flower in my hair. I love celebrating my Mexican-Italian heritage, and a flower makes me feel Spanish…and pretty!”

Cuban enjoyed catching up with Vince McMahon and called WWE family, saying anytime they get together is fun. He said the energy at WWE RAW was like a Mavericks game, except he didn’t have to worry about his team winning. He also mentioned that the NBA told the Mavericks players they could attend RAW but were not allowed in the ring.

Monday Night TNA, RVD & Flair In TNA, No More 6-Sided Ring?

– The ongoing speculation that TNA will wind up on Monday nights competing head-to-head with WWE Raw continues. While nobody from TNA or Spike TV have commented directly about the rumor, people who are being contacted by Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff about joining them in TNA are “under the impression” that a Monday night show is inevitable. There has been talk of TNA holding a live television special on Monday night, January 4th to test he waters and see how they would do up against Raw.

– Hulk Hogan is not a fan of TNA’s 6-sided ring and has been telling people that it’s one of the first things he’s like to change when he comes into power next month.

Ric Flair Comments On Whether He’d Work For TNA

Alex Marvez of ScrippsNews.com recently interviewed WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair and asked him about whether he’d ever seriously consider going to TNA Wrestling now that Hulk Hogan is on board.

“I haven’t entertained the idea of working there because I’ve been so loyal to WWE, but you never know what’s going to go on,” Flair said. “I don’t want to make any predictions, but I’ve certainly got a lot left to offer. I think I would be a good addition to (TNA’s) program.

“Everything is about money, timing, what they want me to do and the job description. There’s a lot up in the air. I haven’t talked to (TNA ownership) yet, but I’ve had conversations with people who work there. I’ve stood by WWE, but if they’re not going to use me anymore, I’m ready for any kind of action.”

Hogan-Dixie TNA Storyline, Angle High On Wolfe, Drug Testing

– We’ve got some new details regarding a storyline that’s already underway involving Hulk Hogan’s involvement with TNA Wrestling. The original plan was for Hulk Hogan to lead the younger, homegrown stars of TNA against the “old guard” of established WWE & WCW castoffs, led by TNA president Dixie Carter. Hulk Hogan’s recent comments that he’ll be “in charge” of TNA are all part of the storyline (Hogan will have a great deal of power in TNA, but his comments are the start of this angle). Dixie Carter was going to be a big player in the “Hulk Hogan joins TNA” angle, but there was a recent decision to cut back on Dixie’s role and have Mick Foley is now expected to be the leader of TNA’s “old guard” movement. Dixie Carter will still be involved, but will not have the same role as originally planned.

– Kurt Angle is said to have a high opinion of TNA newcomer Desmond Wolfe following their pay-per-view match last month. Angle actually laid the entire match out but claimed that after his back went out in the first minute they had to change plans and work on the fly until the finish.

– TNA held surprise drug testings at the last set of TV tapings. The last set of tapings like this had a 25% failure rate but nobody was punished.

– The four-hour TNA special on New Year’s Eve on Spike TV will air from 7-11PM. The first two hours will be a countdown with the ten best matches of 2009, as voted on by the fans on TNA’s website. The last two hours will be a regular edition of iMPACT.

AJ Styles Says TNA Will Compete With WWE On Monday Nights

TNA Champion AJ Styles

TNA Champion AJ Styles

TNA Wrestling World champion A.J. Styles was interviewed by Perth, Australia’s 91.3 SportFM and spoke TNA’s desire to compete with WWE.

Radio host Jason Dattilo asked Styles about the rumor that TNA Wrestling could be moving their programming to Monday nights to compete with WWE Raw and start a new Monday Night War. When asked whether TNA on Monday nights will ever happen, Styles responded confidently by saying, “Absolutely. One day it will happen, there’s no doubt about it. I know we can run with them.”

This brought the conversation to whether TNA is ready to start a war and what is holding them back from being ready to take WWE down. Styles implied that money was a big reason WWE is able to produce a top notch product and get their brand name out there. “A lot of things (wrong) are our production issues. The reason why WWE is out there and so big and been there so long and their production is very expensive. We’re working our way up there to get to that point. We just don’t have the money they do.” Styles also pointed to TNA not having the brand awareness that WWE has in the marketplace. Styles said if the production value picks up and TNA can “get their name out there,”, he sees TNA being able to compete with WWE.

Styles also named Rey Mysterio, Shawn Michaels, Shelton Benjamin, Christian and Evan Bourne as WWE superstars who would be a good fit in TNA.

Ray makes it back into the floor and mounts a bit of a comeback, hitting a big elbow and following it up with a chop.  Ray hits a series of right bhands before going for a bionic elbow.  Pope ducks it and bitch slaps Ray, sending him into the ropes, where Pope slides down Ray’s back.  Ray comes out of nowhere with a Bubba bomb and tags in Rhino, who quickly goes to work on Dinero.

Dinero is able to make the tag to Morgan who comes in and hangs Rhino up on the top rope with a big leg drop.  Rhino goes for a straight boot to the side of the head and Morgan hits a big chop.  Rhino avoids a splash in the corner and hits one of his own but he quickly falls victim to a big clothesline.  All six men are in the ring, and Dinero ends up falling victim to a reverse 3D after knocking Hernandez out of the way.

Morgan hits rapid fire elbows on Rhino before following it up with a splash and a side slam, but D-Von is able to break up the pin attempt.  Hernandez tags in and hits a slingshot double clothesline on D-Von and Rhino before cleaning house on the veterans.  Super Mex gets the crowd amped up before leaping over the top rope and wiping out all three of his opponents.

Back in the ring Hernandez hits a big splash on Rhino, but Rhino is able to kick out.  Ray attacks from behind and 3D goes for the what’s up headbutt, but Pope breaks it up.  Ray walks into a chokeslam from Morgan, but Morgan is sent to the outside by Rhino.  Dinero takes Rhino down with a big powerbomb and Hernandez goes for the cover but he gets two.  Pope pulls down his knee pads but he gets pulled crotch first into the ring post.  D-Von comes in with a chair and hits Hernanndez while the ref’s back is turned.  Rhino hits a spear, and pins Hernandez for the three count.

JB is backstage with Kurt Angle who immediately interrupts him.  Angle says that Wolfe is trying to take out the biggest badass in TNA, but no one makes their reputation on his behalf.  Angle says it’s one on one in just a couple of minutes.  Angles says he doesn’t need to know Wolfe to beat him, because he’s the best wrestler in the world, and that’s real.

Kurt Angle vs. Desmond Wolf

Wolfe is out to the ring first, and he makes his way to the ring quickly, walking with a purpose.  Angle is out next to a warm reception from the crowd.

Angle immediately backs Wolfe up into the corner, but he quickly breaks clean.  Wolfe and Angle trade wristlocks and Wolfe takes Angle down with a shoulder block, but quickly falls victim to a hip toss and a couple of arm drags.  Angle locks in a hammerlock, but Wolfe fights out and locks in one of his own with a facelock for good measure.

Angle and Wolfe continue to trade submission holds.  Angle’s forehead ends up on the rope and Wolfe uses it as an opportunity to kick the rope and disorient Angle.  Wolfe uses this time to his advantage, working over Angle’s hand, but he’s quickly taken down with a boot and suplex.

Angle hits Wolfe with a European uppercut before burying his shoulder in Wolfe’s midsection, but when Angle goes for a shoulder block in the corner Wolfe is able to avoid it and Angle’s shoulder connects with the ring post.  Wolfe continues to work over Angle’s arm, just using every opportunity to stomp or tear at Kurt’s arm.

Wolfe locks in a sick arm submission, but Angle fights out and tries for the ankle lock.  Wolfe is able to avoid the hold, and he hits a big running European uppercut.  Wolfe hits Angle with a forearm and he tries for another uppercut, but Angle hits him with a belly to belly suplex instead.  Angle follows up with a trio of running clotheslines before connecting with a flying forearm.

JB is backstage with Samoa Joe.  Joe says that he didn’t cause a problem between Daniels and AJ, he only showed them the truth.  Joe says that when you put the fate of who you are in the hands of another, you end up getting screwed.  Joe says nobody has sent both other men to the hospital more than him, and tonight, he only needs to beat one of them, and that’s exactly what he intends to do.

TNA Champion AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe vs. Daniels

We get an extensive video highlighting the history between this match, the rematch from 2005.  Daniels is out first to a decent reaction to the crowd.

All three men are apparently going to be shown walking in from the backstage area.  Joe is out next and the crowd is surprisingly a little dead (although burn out from the last, really good, match is always a possibility).  Styles is shown on his way into the Impact Zone and he gets a great pop from the crowd on his way down to the ring.

JB does the formal ring introductions for all three men.  In a nice throwback, streamers are thrown for all three men.  AJ Styles of course gets the most, as well as the warmest reception from the crowd.

Daniels takes a shot at AJ right off the bat and he and Joe square off.  AJ is in, cleaning house on both men, taking Daniels down with a shoulder block before burying his knee into Joe’s midsection and hitting a big flying forearm.  AJ decks Daniels with a huge forearm, but he falls victim to a big splash/enzugiri combo from Joe.  Joe chops AJ’s back before kicking his check but he gets hit with a leg lariat by Daniels.  Daniels and AJ chain wrestle for a bit, but AJ misses one dropkick, only to get right back up and hit another on Daniels, then another on Joe.

AJ locks in a side headlock, but Daniels makes his way back to his feet.  AJ kicks off of Joe and sends Daniels back to the ground.  Daniels fights out again, but Joe distracts Styles and Daniels connects with an STO.  Joe comes in and goes to work with rapid fire blows in the corner before punting AJ in the ribs and hitting a running high knee on Daniels.  Joe kicks away at Daniels’ leg before rolling into a leg bar.  AJ breaks it up witha knee drop.

AJ and Joe square off and AJ tries for a suplex but Joe won’t budge.  Joe tries for one of his own, but AJ comes back down and uses the leverage to suplex Joe.  AJ hits an elbow to the back of Joe’s head and he locks in an inverted indian death lock with a chin bridge, but Daniels is able to break it up.  Daniels catches Styles with a drop toe hold a drives his knee into the back of Styles’ head.  Daniels hits a neckbreaker and locks in a rear chin lock.  Daniels catches Joe with a low dropkick which he follows up by slamming AJ on Joe.  Daniels locks in a combination Boston crab/camel clutch on AJ and Joe respectively but Joe bites Daniels’ fingers.  Joe connects with a urunage on Daniels before hitting a face wash on both Styles and Daniels.

Joe hits a dropkick on Styles that sends him to the outside while also hitting a senton on Daniels.  Joe tries to follow out with a suicide dive, but AJ meets him with a kick to the head.  Daniels and AJ square off in the ring and AJ connects with a big suplex.  AJ slingshots himself out to the ring apron but Joe kicks his legs out from under him.  This gives Daniels an opportunity to dive out on top of Joe.  Daniels chops Joe on the floor and he goes for the split leg moonsault but AJ catches hit legs and Joe chops his chest.  Joe locks in a rear naked choke and AJ launches himself over the ropes with a twisting body press on top of both men.

AJ tries for the cover on Joe but Joe kicks out at two.  AJ connects with a snap head scissors.  AJ sends Daniels down and uses him as a platform to launch himself into Joe.  AJ then connects with a springboard hurricarana, that’s good for a near fall.  Daniels is able to catch both men in the corner with chops.  Daniels monkey flips Styles into Joe, who powerbombs him back into Daniels.  Joe hits another powerbomb and floats over into a Boston crab, then an STF.

AJ counters a suplex from Daniels into a suplex/neckbreaker type move.  Joe and AJ trade blows, with Joe taking AJ down with a big kick.  Joe tries for the same kick on Daniels, but Daniels ducks and hits an enzugiri to take down Joe.  Styles is up and he connects with a Pele and all three men are down.

AJ cleans house on both of his opponents, taking both men down.  AJ sends Daniels to the floor with a back body drop before coming back into the ring with a springboard forearm on Joe.  AJ goes for the pin but Joe kicks out.  AJ connects with a hurricarana, but again Joe is able to kick out of a pin attempt.  Styles hits a moonsault into an inverted DDT on Joe before catching Daniels in the same position off a springboard.  Daniels rolls through and hits the last rites but Joe breaks up a pin.  Daniels hits a huge German suplex on Joe.

Daniels and Styles fight out on the ring apron up to the top turnbuckle, both trying for a superplex.  Joe comes in to break things up sending AJ to the floor with a chop.  Joe teases another muscle buster on Daniels but Daniels fights out, hits an STO, and follows it up with a BME on Joe.  Styles comes in out of nowhere with a springboard 450 splash on the back of Daniels who is covering Joe.  Styles pins Joe and the ref counts to three.

Bobby Lashley Leaving TNA To Fight MMA Full Time?

In an interview with Sherdog.com, TNA Wrestling star and MMA fighter says he’d strongly consider walking away from pro wrestling if he was offered an exclusive deal with Strikeforce.

“If it does come to a point where you have to choose, then I’ll have to sit back and talk with my family. I want to fight,” Lashley said. “TNA is at the understanding where they know my dedication with fighting. If (Strikeforce CEO Scott) Coker comes back and says you have to quit wrestling, then we’ll have to cross that bridge.”

TNA offered Lashley great money to work a reduced schedule and they understand fighting is his top priority.

Lashley professional MMA record is 4-0, most recently defeating Bob Sapp on June 27th. There were reports over the summer that Strikeforce was negotiating with Bobby Lashley to fight Fedor Emelianenko at last weekend’s CBS event. Lashley declined the high profile fight because he didn’t think he’d have enough time to train properly, but Strikeforce is interested and can certainly use another rising star with name value in their heavyweight division.

TNA Knockout Released – Details Behind Her Departure

It was reported last week that Sojournor Bolt’s future with Total Nonstop Action Wrestling appeared to be in doubt. According to PWInsider.com, she was released by the organization yesterday. Her profile was removed from the company website’s roster section this afternoon, thus confirming her departure.

It should be noted that there is a chance she be may used again in the future, but the company had nothing creatively for her at the moment and opted to release her from her contract.

The veteran women’s wrestler had been sparingly used since Dutch Mantel’s departure from TNA this past summer and the feeling was her days in the company were numbered.

News of Bolt’s release comes just days after several TNA wrestlers asked for their releases and were denied. For more on that story, click here.

TNA Talent Unhappy, Nash Contest Dropped, ODB’s New Deal

— As seen last week on iMPACT!, TNA President Dixie Carter essentially said during her speech at the top of the hour that anyone who wasn’t on board with her recent changes to the organization should find work elsewhere. As it turns out, five wrestlers had asked for their releases from the company in recent weeks, including Frankie Kazarian (a.k.a. Suicide) and Homicide — we don’t have the names of the three other wrestlers. All five were turned down. (VIDEO: Dixie Carter’s Speech)

— TNA has dropped Kevin Nash’s search for his first-ever female valet, the Big Sexy World Tour. The winner would have received an all-expenses-paid trip to next month’s Final Resolution pay-per-view in Orlando and accompanied Nash to the ring for his match that night.

— As reported earlier, reigning TNA Women’s Knockout Champion ODB recently inked a multi-year deal with the organization. Her contract renewal with the organization actually came as a surprise to friends as she had been discussing jumping to World Wrestling Entertainment when her previous contract expired in mid-November. She had been telling people the past two months that she didn’t think management even realized her contract was coming due because no one had mentioned it to her.

Rhaka Khan’s Order Of Protection Againsts Kurt Angle Dropped

Kurt Angle’s legal problems with ex-girlfriend Trenesha Biggers (former TNA Knockout Rhaka Khan) appear to be winding down.

Pittsburgh’s WTAE station (an ABC affiliate) reports that the order of protection issued against Angle was dismissed on Monday after Biggers voluntarily removed the order. Both she and Angle have agreed to stay away from each other. Angle did not comment after Monday’s proceedings.

Angle was arrested last September after allegedly stalking Biggers shortly after he was served with this protection order. Those charges were eventually dismissed.

Backstage: Russo’s TNA Future & Possible Replacement, Hogan

Credit: PWTorch.com Newsletter

Regarding Vince Russo’s future in TNA, everyone close to the situation is saying that nothing has been decided yet by the company. Russo is under the impression that nothing has changed regarding his status since he feels he’s been doing his job, but there are a number of people who feel his position is in jeopardy. Those same people also feel the Hogan and Bischoff team will establish their own infrastructure and put their own creative people in place, and the duo will be in TNA for the long haul.

If Russo goes, the assumption is that Ed Ferarra will also be out of a job. The only remaining member of the current creative staff would be Matt Conway, who is the youngest member of the staff and is someone Dixie Carter sees as a bright young mind.

Kevin Sullivan has been mentioned as a potential replacement for Vince Russo, as well as Kevin Nash although Nash says he has no interest in the role. Nash is currently working to solidify his acting career for once he finishes wrestling.

Rumors that Hogan and Bischoff negotiated directly with Dixie’s father, Bob Carter, who owns TNA’s parent company Panda Energy, are false. Multiple sources closes to the situation say Dixie was in charge of negotiations, which lasted approximately five months.
