Eric Young On Why He Left TNA, Bobby Roode Calling TNA “Stale” & More

Former TNA Wrestler Eric Young, called into Busted Open with Doug Mortman and Dave LaGreca to discuss why he left TNA and what lies ahead for him. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

His Reasons For Leaving:

“For me, it’s twelve years and, sometimes, it’s time to move on. I’m not saying it’s  because I wasn’t fulfilled with what I was doing there or the people I was working with. It just became time. I’m not a ‘dirt’ guy or ‘drag people through the mud’. TNA’s been my home for twelve years. They allowed me to make a pretty good living in professional wrestling for twelve years and I wish them all the luck. Things don’t end because they’re good. People don’t get divorced because they’re having an amazing love life and still love each other and things are great. Things end because they’re not the way they’re supposed to be. Things weren’t the way they’re supposed to be for me in my opinion, so it was time for me to step away and do something else. What that’s going to be, I don’t have any idea. It’s terrifying and exciting and there’s lots of stuff up in the air with wrestling. There’s some big stuff kind of in the works for television stuff for me right now that I can’t talk about contractually. It’s terrifying – I’m 36 years old and I’m unemployed for the first time in my life. It’s pretty crazy.”

Bobby Roode Saying TNA Is Stale:

“I think what he was trying to say, I don’t know exactly, but what he’s trying to say is  he’s a guy that’s done all of it… He’s done everything and is feeling stale himself. I don’t think he meant the brand. If it maybe came across that way, you’d have to ask him himself… For me, I was excited with what I was doing. I liked doing the heel thing. That was completely new to me. It has nothing to do with feeling stale for me. It was just time, professionally, to move on. It had nothing to do with in-ring. Often, the problems of the wrestling business get in the way of wrestling. That’s what it comes down to. The wrestling business got in the way of me being happy and things being right so it’s time for me to go do something else.”

What’s Next For Him:

“For me, going through in the future, I don’t know. It’s terrifying – I said that already  once – terrifying and exciting to be unemployed… But there’s a lot of options and for me, I may not have the shiniest tool chest or maybe the newest tool chest or the fastest tool chest, but one thing I know for sure is I’ve got the f***ing biggest tool chest. And I’ve proven it. There’s not a single thing in wrestling that I can’t do and I’ve proven it. That’s not words. I’m not saying that because I haven’t done it. I’ve seen the card from every single angle. I’ve done tag, I can work X Division or cruiserweight or whatever you want to say, I’ve been world heavyweight champion and did well at that. I can make you laugh, I can make you hate me, I can make you  cry, I can make you do a pile of things with wrestling. I’m terrible at life. I’m terrible at most things, but pro wrestling I can do and I’ve proven it. I’m not worried. Something’s going to happen and I can’t wait to see what that’s going to be.”

On whether NXT/WWE may be his future home:

“Obviously, it’s a definite possibility. From the second that something was put up, of course, the parallels are being drawn and it’s something that’s definitely an option for me. The book is wide open and never in my career have I had that. I’ve always been a TNA guy… It’s exciting to say that I’m going to open another chapter. I’ve got a good foothold in pro wrestling and it’s cool to kind of be able to choose and have that ability because not everyone gets the choice. It’s a very cool thing, very flattering.”

Kurt Angle Talks About His TNA Departure, Possible WWE Return

Former WWE and TNA star Kurt Angle appeared on Sunday night’s Live Audio Wrestling over at FightNetwork.com. Here are some highlights:

– Angle said he left TNA because he simply needed a break. “I’ve been under contract for the past 17 years and didn’t have much time to spend with my family.”

– He was happy with his TNA run and felt like he doesn’t have anything left to prove. That said, he’s not retiring and plans to return to wrestling next year.

– Another reason he’s taking a break from wrestling is to focus on his acting career. “I signed with an agency, APA in Hollywood,” he said. “I’ve been doing some reads, just doing my own thing. I like it, it’s good to be off and not have to worry about showing up somewhere every week.”

– Regarding a WWE return, he’s taking a ‘wait and see’ approach. “I heard about [last week’s RAW from] Pittsburgh, I didn’t really watch but I heard they were chanting we want Angle. I saw a lot of tweets going out there, I do believe I started trending that night. I’m sure that was quite a surprise to WWE. I know that the fans wants me back, I understand. I had a great career there, it’s where I started and obviously a lot of people want me to finish there.”

Bobby Roode On Leaving TNA: “Their Brand Has Been Stale For The Last Little While”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8X-SKT6pviM

Bobby Roode and Eric Young are officially gone from TNA. The two reportedly asked for their releases on Saturday night due to pay issues.

Roode, who is now a free agent, spoke with The Peterborough Examiner about his decision to leave the company.

“It felt like it was the right time,” Roode explained. “After almost 13 years in a wrestling company I felt like there was nothing really left for me to do there. I wanted to mutually part ways. I have nothing negative to say about TNA Wrestling. They treated me very, very well. It was just a matter of me being in a part of my life where I’m not sure TNA was the right fit for me anymore.

“The brand has been stale for the last little while and the growth wasn’t there as it was in the early years. I’m a free agent so I can do anything I want as far as wrestling goes.”

Roode and Young are both currently free to negotiate with companies like WWE and NJPW.

Jeff Jarrett: Compares Global Force To TNA, Open To WWE HOF Induction

Global Force Wrestling founder Jeff Jarrett recently appeared on the In The Room podcast. During the interview, Jarrett discussed the Global Force revolution, his time in Memphis and working with his father, balancing his private and public life and more.

When asked to compare GFW to TNA, Jarrett said, “Wrestling fans love to compare everything that they can get their hands on. That’s okay. I love it. You can compare title runs, you can compare feuds, you can compare promos … everybody has in their minds a comparison or a pecking order or what have you. I know that certain times in TNA’s history, I’d love to be compared to that company. Other times, not so much.

He added that wrestling fans pick and choose what they want to watch, which he’s happy about. He threw some shade at his former company by stating,”When you come a Global Force show, you immediately know this is not TNA.”

Jarrett was also asked about a possible WWE Hall of Fame induction. Jarrett sounds interested, but knows the decision rests with a guy named Vince. “That is up to one man. You can’t predict a man’s mind. I’ll leave that up to the wrestling fans to discuss and debate and everything that goes with it.”

Update On Why Bobby Roode & Eric Young Left TNA

Longtime TNA performers Bobby Roode and Eric Young are officially gone from the company after asking for their releases on Saturday night. According to the PWTorch VIP, Roode and Young made their decision because of pay issues.

Roode and Young reportedly quit the company after asking TNA management for pay raises and were both turned down. Roode and Young had been with the company since 2004. Both are now free agents and can negotiate with other companies.

TNA has reportedly had issues with paying talent over the last couple years, but it’s not known if Roode or Young are among those wrestlers owed money.

Eric Young & Bobby Roode Comment On Their TNA Departures

Former TNA Champions Bobby Roode and Eric Young are both officially gone from TNA after over a decade with the company. TNA issued a statement earlier and now Roode & Young have each broken their silence:

https://twitter.com/TheEricYoung/status/711355578652729344

Amazingly, both men referenced what’s ‘next’ for them without spelling the word ‘n-x-t’. In all seriousness, it’s the end of another era for TNA and both veterans. Young and Roode were synonymous with TNA from the very beginning, dating back to their days as members of Team Canada. They stayed loyal throughout the countless highs and lows, the expansions and the contractions. Neither man will have trouble finding work in the business and TNA will continue chugging along, but it has to be bitter-sweet for all parties involved.

Bobby Roode & Eric Young Gone From TNA – Official Statement

The TNA exodus continues, as Bobby Roode and Eric Young are gone. Both had been with TNA since 2004, when they came in as part of Team Canada under trainer (and former TNA booker) Scott D’Amore.

They had been linked to each other on and off for much of that period, alternating as partners and rivals throughout. It’s not yet clear why they asked for their releases, but TNA has had issues with paying talent and production staff late at times in the last year or two.

Here’s the full statement from TNA:

Impact Wrestling has come to terms on the release of veteran wrestlers Bobby Roode and Eric Young (Jeremy Fritz). Bobby and Eric have been valuable members of The Impact Roster since 2004 and we wish them nothing but the best in their careers going forward.

Bobby had this to say earlier today, “To the guys and girls I got to work with for the past 12 years, Impact Wrestling, the office and everyone associated with me getting to live this dream, I say thank you. It is time for me to move on to the next chapter in my life. This has been amazing.”

Eric Young had this to say. “Thank you. Thank you to everyone who watched me for the past 12 years. Thank you to Impact Wrestling. I wish everyone here nothing but the best going forward.”

Executive Vice President of Creative and Television, John Gaburick added, “Bobby and Eric are true professionals. We salute them for the 12 years they gave TNA.

With a Superstar roster including EC3, James Storm, Drew Galloway, Jeff and Matt Hardy, “The Destroyer” Bobby Lashley, Gail Kim, The Wolves, Maria Kanellis-Bennett and “The Miracle” Mike Bennett we couldn’t be more excited about showcasing the finest wrestling in the world for the Impact fans.”

In the coming weeks be sure to see the final matches of both Bobby Roode and Eric Young on Impact Wrestling at 9PM EST on Pop TV.

Jeff Hardy Is The Latest Wrestler Pledging To Donate His Brain To Science

TNA star Jeff Hardy has pledged to donate his brain to the CTE Center at Boston University and the Concussion Legacy Foundation after he passes away. He joins a list of wrestlers who’ve made the pledge to the CTE Center including Rob Van Dam, Kevin Nash and Mick Foley.

In a recent interview with Ring Rust Radio, Hardy said Nash’s decision to donate his brain influenced him.

“My wife read where Kevin Nash announced that and I said, “Oh my God I have to do that.” I for sure will do whatever it takes and I would love to be a part of that. It’s a huge serious issue in wrestling,” Hardy said. “I’ve rung my bells so many times especially back in the day when chair shots to the head were legal. My goodness, I took so many of those. Luckily, I’m only aware of about two or three concussions that I have had but there’s really no way of telling how many overall. When Nash announced he was doing that I was on board and I didn’t know that RVD did as well. That really inspired me to do the same thing.”

(Photo: @MrJacobCohen)

TNA returned to Orlando, Florida on Tuesday night for a “live” edition of Impact Wrestling on Pop TV. Drew Galloway cashed in his Feast or Fired briefcase during the main event to capture the TNA World Heavyweight championship from Matt Hardy. Here are the quick results from the show:

– Jeff Hardy def. Eric Young

– Mike and Maria Bennett def. Drew Galloway and Gail Kim

– The Decay def. Beer Money and Eddie Edwards

– Grado def. Eli Drake

– Jeff Hardy vs. Ethan Carter III vs. Matt Hardy ended in a no contest after Drew Galloway cashed in his briefcase to become the new TNA World Champion.

Former TNA champion Matt Hardy tweeted the following about what transpired:

Jeff Hardy Interview: Wanting To Face Matt Before Reuniting The Hardy Boyz, His Injury

TNA star Jeff Hardy recently spoke with The Huffington Post to promote Impact Wrestling on Pop TV. Here are some highlights:

– Regarding his brother Matt’s new “Big Money Matt” persona, Jeff says it’s an extension of who Matt really is. He thinks Matt is doing the best work his career and he’s proud to see him as TNA World champion.

– Jeff is still disappointed that his Hardy Boyz reunion from last year was derailed after he broke his leg in a motocross accident. After defeating The Wolves for the TNA tag titles, they had to surrender the belts before they ever got a chance to defend them. “Getting hurt outside the ring was such a bad thing,” Jeff said. “I let so many people down. I hurt TNA by doing that.”

– Despite last year’s setback, he still wants to reform the Hardy Boyz one day. “Ultimately, I’d love to tag with him again, and win the titles so we could at least defend them together once. Just to make my soul feel a little better about the way I messed things up.”

However, before there’s a final Hardy Boyz reunion, Jeff says there’s one stipulation he has in mind. “We’ve got to get that Matt vs. Jeff match out of the way first.”

Report: The Reason TNA Fired Ken Anderson

Following up on earlier report about Ken Anderson leaving TNA, it turns out there’s actually a lot more to the story. Anderson wrestled for ICW in Scotland over the weekend and was met with a “F**k TNA” chant. Anderson told the crowd that he no longer works for TNA and he agrees – “F**k TNA.”

According to a report at Pro Wrestling Sheet, Anderson was released by TNA after failing a drug test and allegedly wrestling while impaired. Anderson worked against Eric Young that was supposed to air on the January 19th episode of Impact. The match was so bad due to Anderson’s condition that the company made the call to edit off the show. When he got backstage afterwards, he was drug tested and subsequently fired.

The situation is reminiscent of Jeff Hardy’s Victory Road 2011 match against Sting, although that match aired live on pay-per-view and Hardy wasn’t fired for it.

It should be noted that Anderson has not yet shared his side of the story, aside from “F**k TNA.”

Kurt Angle Done With TNA, New TNA Tag Team Champions Crowned

– Following his match against Bobby Lashley last night on Impact, Kurt Angle is now done with TNA Wrestling. Angle had been with the company since 2006 and captured the TNA World Heavyweight title 5 times during that run.

– Beer Money are your new TNA World Tag Team Champions. They defeated The Wolves on last night’s taped Impact Wrestling show, taped back in January from the UK. This marks the fifth reign for Bobby Roode and James Storm.

Davey Richards of The Wolves tore his ACL in this match and has already undergone reconstruction surgery. He’s expected to be out of action until August at the earliest but could be out until November.

Video: Mr. Anderson Says, “I Don’t Work For TNA. F**k TNA”

Ken Anderson is done with TNA Wrestling and sounds like he’s glad that chapter in his career is over. At a recent appearance for Insane Championship Wrestling in Glasgow, Scotland, Anderson was greeted with a “F**k TNA” chant by the crowd. Anderson told them he no longer works for them, so indeed, “F**k TNA.”

TNA Returning To Orlando Next Week For 5 Nights Of Tapings

TNA sent out a press release on Monday announcing that 5 nights of TV tapings from Orlando, Florida kick off next Tuesday night from Universal Studios.

The shows that have been airing on Pop TV over the past several weeks were taped back in January during the company’s annual Maximum Impact UK tour. With the final UK episode airing tomorrow night, there has been some concern that TNA had not yet announced anything moving forward.

Next Tuesday’s episode of Impact will air “live” (on a slight delay), while the company will tape additional episodes of Impact, Xplosion and a One Night Only pay-per-view through Saturday, March 19th.

This Week’s Impact Wrestling Viewership Increases Slightly

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6xt424ZE3k

This week’s episode of Impact Wrestling averaged 258,000 viewers. This is up from last week’s 210,000 viewers. The show was headlined by Bobby Roode vs. Kurt Angle, from Angle’s “farewell tour” in the UK.

According to Showbuzz Daily, the show ranked at #150 on the Top 150 shows on cable for the night. As noted, last week’s show did not make the Top 150.

EC3 On Working With Kurt Angle, Daniel Bryan’s Retirement & More

Former TNA World Champion Ethan Carter III recently appeared on Ring Rust Radio. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

The Locker Room’s Reaction To Impact Moving To Pop TV:

“I think the talents been there and the creative has been on point. A lot of the guys that are getting the chance now that might not have before are either new, or I don’t want to say weren’t getting it before, but weren’t embracing the opportunity they had. No one is bigger than the business or bigger than the company. We are all gears in the machine and these guys wanted to be gears so bad that when they got put in the machine, they have been knocking it out. The locker room as it stands right now, the morale is high, everyone is in it together, it’s a team atmosphere and we are very proud of what we are doing. I think that shows in the product. Right now there are no bad eggs per say, no downers, and no frowny faces. Everyone is very excited to go to work and achieve something.”

What TNA Is Doing Right & What They Can Improve:

“What I think we are doing great is continuity, character development and stories that are logical and make sense. We are progressing beyond the typical “boo a guy” and “cheer a guy” because they are bad or good. Characters have motivations and reasons for what they do and the talent has the opportunity to embrace that character and make it their own and run with it. I think that’s what we’re doing really well and that’s what we need to continue to focus on. To get better we cannot rest on a laurels or success. We can’t think that people are saying the shows really good now so we can stop. No we can’t. We have to work harder and we have to do better to continue improvement and continue to focus. All rolls up into a nice little package and were off to the races with a pretty good wrestling show, so rock ‘n roll with that.”

Daniel Bryan’s Retirement:

“Daniel Bryan the man is one of the best dudes ever. He is the best dude, I don’t know how to describe it. He is the most well-respected wrestler and just the best dude. Can I say best dude again because I will, he is the best dude. It’s very unfortunate to lose a guy especially because we don’t even know if he hit prime with how good he was. Concussions are scary and dangerous, this business is dangerous, and we lost one of our best, if not the best.

“It’s very sad, but I am very happy because I know that guy will succeed no matter what he does. Hope for him to have a great future which I know he will, and he’s got a hot wife so what can really go wrong? I’ll miss him dearly, but I mean what a legacy he left. A trendsetter who broke down the doors to so many different things; a model of inspiration to anyone who loves wrestling or wanted to be a pro wrestler. Bless him and Godspeed DB.”

How Working With Kurt Angle Has Affected His Career:

“I only got into wrestling because of Kurt Angle. He was my favorite at the time when I was in my early teens and I wanted to do what he did for a living. So he was a guy I was watching and studying, so someday I would have the chance to be able to work with him at a high level for a world title. That was my dream match and I got to have it. So seeing him go sucks, and it really does suck because we all respect him greatly. He’s a cool uncle in the locker room; we love him and were going to miss him.

Working with him is a great honor in my life, and not only working with him, but being able to go out there and tell a story of him symbolically passing me the torch. From the things he said to me afterwards and the care he took with me, telling me things, talking business, talking shop, he didn’t need to do any of that and he went out of his way to really help me out and stick up for me. He helped pay the way for me, so to speak. I have nothing but respect, love and admiration for Kurt Angle. I’m going to miss him and especially going to miss because I want to have one more match and I didn’t get to have it so that’s unfortunate.”

Kurt Angle Says He’s Not Retiring Yet, But Is Taking “At Least a Year” Off

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6lLR9VKLOo

Yesterday, ESPN UK’s Nicholas Atkin posted an article based on an interview he did with Kurt Angle on January 30th in London, England during TNA’s UK tour. As far as newsworthiness, there are two things to note:

The first addresses something that happened at the tapings: We noted at the time that there was fear that Angle suffered a concussion at TNA’s first taping of the UK tour on January 29th in Manchester, which happened to be the night before the interview. At the time, the reports were that Angle seemed better after about half an hour and was cleared to wrestle the next night inHowever, Atkin wrote that Angle told him that he did indeed suffer a concussion in Manchester, but the doctor still cleared him for London. Angle told Atkin that “I’m healthy, I don’t have any problems. You have injuries, you’re gonna have injuries in wrestling. Everybody does,” but it’s not 100% clear if he was speaking generally or referring to the concussion.

At the time, it was classified as Angle having a “concussion scare” but turning out to be OK. Clearly, that wasn’t actually the case. Obviously, we don’t have the whole story, like who exactly the doctor was and if (s)he was affiliated with TNA, but for a doctor to clear someone the night after suffering a concussion is a terrible look, to say the least. With WWE fighting off lawsuits alleging that they acted improperly with regards to handling concussions, it’s mind-boggling that something like this could happen in TNA, even if you’re someone who has a low opinion of the company. Angle’s TNA farewell matches were indeed the most hyped part of the tour, but in 2016, you would think that the fans would be understanding if he had to bow out after Manchester with a concussion. It also looks even worse with the news coming out a few weeks after Daniel Bryan’s retirement speech, though the actual concussion happened just over a week before Bryan made his retirement announcement.

For what it’s worth, elsewhere in the ESPN article, Angle says that he’s better overall shape than people think, especially when it comes to his oft-injured neck: “A lot of people feel I’m banged up. I had some bad luck with my neck for a couple of years in WWE. Ever since I’ve been pretty healthy as far as my neck. Obviously I’ve had knee injuries, shoulder injuries, we all do. It’s just a matter of the recovery time and when you can come back, and I’ve been very fortunate to come back soon.”

Meanwhile, as for all of the talk of whether or not Angle is retiring, he said that “I’m gonna take a break from [professional] wrestling, I know that for sure, at least a year. So we’ll see how it goes and I’ll go from there.” Angle then clarified thet “I’m not gonna say I’m gonna retire. I am pretty much done with TNA. Not sure, maybe down the road, maybe I might come back, but most likely I probably won’t, because there’s a chance that I might not wrestle again. I just wanna get a feeler this year and see what I wanna do and see where I wanna go.” The TNA UK tour was set to be the site of his last matches for the time being, but it looks like the offer to wrestle Rey Mysterio at the UR Fight card next month must have been too lucrative to pass up. Although if he suffered a concussion on January 29th and it was far from his first, wrestling on March 20th may not be a great idea.

TNA Releases Full Match Listing For Essential A.J. Styles DVD Set

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asE4E7OnHRo

Being that TNA had been negotiating with A.J. Styles and now he’s on WWE television with a push, it’s no surprise that they have a Styles DVD set coming out to capitalize. While it wouldn’t be the first time that TNA reacted to a former roster member going to WWE by putting out a DVD set, it’s entirely possible that they were planning this going back to their talks with Styles late last year. Regardless, at four discs, it’s a very comprehensive look at Styles’ TNA career, and you can’t really blame TNA for trying either way. TNA Seeking Out New Investors To Get Cash Infused Into The Company

Last night, Mike Johnson broke the news at PWInsider.com that TNA has been actively seeking out new investors for the company as of late, which TNA Executive Vice President,Creative & Talent Relations John Gaburick confirmed. “TNA has been in in strategic partnership talks with several major global media companies and investment firms about the company’s next phase of growth,” adding that “TNA CEO Dixie Carter has talked in recent media interviews about the company’s execution of its 5 year growth plan”  and “It’s a very exciting time for TNA.” Gaburick also confirmed that Dixie Carter had spent a lot of time in New York and Los Angeles as of late for meetings.

On last night’s Wrestling Observer Radio podcast for F4WOnline.com subscribers, Dave Meltzer said that he didn’t have much in the way of details other than that “It’s up for sale.” It wasn’t entirely clear if he just meant shares or trying to sell outright, but he took a fairly negative point of view since it’s not like TNA is in good shape right now and they’re losing their biggest name star, Kurt Angle.

Johnson followed that up this morning with a “frequently asked questions” type of article where he addressed some key elements of the story:

  • Panda Energy, the Carter family’s main company, is no longer financing TNA, and the belief is that they haven’t been since Jeff Jarrett’s minority stake in the company was bought out last year. Panda may still own TNA on paper, but paychecks that used to come from Panda’s Texas offices are now coming out of TNA’s Nashville, Tennessee offices.
  • The newer international TV deals, like with Sony Six in India, are enough to keep the company afloat, but not enough to make TNA a “player,” and Dixie Carter wants TNA to be a “player” in the pro wrestling business. right now.
  • Johnson has heard that interest in buying into the company has been shown by a United Kingdom based group of some kind, with TNA also having meetings in New York and Los Angeles, “including meetings at the Pop network.” It’s not clear if he means Pop was showing interest in buying to TNA or just that some of the meetings could have been routine meetings with Pop.
  • The company isn’t necessarily for sale, with every source specifically telling Johnson that they’re looking for partners, but theoretically, if “the right offer came along,” it’s not like they’d dismiss it out of hand. Of course, TNA has turned down offers to sell in the past, with one (from a group led by Jeff Jarrett and Hermie Sadler) getting close but not going through when Bob Carter insisted that Dixie must continue to have an onscreen role. Jarrett and Sadler pulled out of the deal because they felt that was dictating creative direction as part of the sale.

It doesn’t seem like TNA is in good shape right now, especially if Panda Energy is no longer funding them. That said, they’ve pulled a rabbit out of their hat before, so it wouldn’t be a huge shock if they found a strategic partner.
