The May 21, 2019 episode of WWE SmackDown aired live from the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence, RI. Here are 4 takeaways from this week’s show:
R-Truth Escaped With The 24/7 Championship
24/7 Champion R-Truth showed up in the arena with a wig on. Carmella then dressed him up even more and suggested that he wear a bra. R-Truth then accompanied Carmella to the ring for her match against Mandy Rose. Sonya Deville was ringside for the match as well.
Carmella connected with a Superkick and Deville quickly hopped up on the apron. Carmella knocked to the floor and then hit another kick. Several superstars from the locker room then chased R-Truth around the ring. R-Truth wound up giving Carmella a piggyback ride through the crowd and escaped.
R-Truth avoided Jinder Mahal backstage and ran to the parking lot with Carmella. The B-Team hit R-Truth from behind but argued over who would cover him. R-Truth then escaped again through the parking lot.
Dolph Ziggler Attacked Kofi Kingston, Will Get Title Shot At Super ShowDown
Big E made his return and got a great reaction from the crowd. Big E joked that he had to send a tweet about Becky Lynch’s mother and Woods reminded him that she was taken.
Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn interrupted to a chorus of boos. Zayn complained about being gone for over 9 months and not getting anything during his return. Big E said that Sami was going to get what Owens got at Money in the Bank, nothing.
Zayn went on a rant about the toxic culture New Day has created. Woods started playing the trombone over Zayn talking and a “New Day rocks!”. Kofi then vowed to defeat Sami later tonight.
Big E was attacked backstage before the match and claimed it was Kevin Owens. Big E told Kofi to handle his match with Zayn. Kofi marched down to the ring and went right after Sami. Zayn battled back and sent Kingston into the steel steps.
Sami Zayn connected with a Superplex and went for the cover but Kingston kicked out at two. Sami went for the Helluva Kick but Kofi got out of the way and hit the Trouble in Paradise for the pinfall victory. After the match, Paul Heyman came down to the entrance ramp with the MITB briefcase.
Dolph Ziggler then attacked Kofi from behind and stretched him out over the ring post. Ziggler then placed Kofi’s head in the steel chair and brutally slammed him into the announce table. Ziggler then stomped on Kofi’s head before finally heading backstage. Kofi was then stretchered to the top of the entrance ramp but walked backstage under his own power.
Dolph Ziggler made his way to the entrance ramp later on the show. Ziggler understood why the crowd was booing and claimed that he would boo himself too. Dolph said that it should have been him that became an overnight success and not Kingston.
Ziggler added that it should have been him that defeated Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania. Dolph stated that he had no other choice but to attack Kofi Kingston and will take the title from him at Super ShowDown.
You would think that Sami Zayn would want to focus his attention on the person that attacked him at Money in the Bank, but apparently, he’s already over that. I was ready to praise the Ziggler attack because I thought it was very well done and was looking forward to Ziggler’s explanation. Unfortunately, we got the explanation thirty minutes later and it was incredibly disappointing. Dolph Ziggler is jealous because the fans got behind Kofi and he knocked it out of the park. In other words, Ziggler is coming back for a match in Saudi Arabia and this feud will likely be over in a couple of weeks.
Lynch & Bayley Picked Up A Win
Becky Lynch teamed up with Bayley to face Lacey Evans and Charlotte Flair tonight on SmackDown. Flair dominated early and bounced Bayley’s face off the top turnbuckle.
Lacey Evans tagged in and applied a Chin Lock. Lynch finally tagged in and Charlotte tagged in at the same time. Becky connected with a Dropkick and then booted Evans off the apron.
Lynch hit Charlotte with the Exploder Suplex and then hit Evans off the apron again. Charlotte capitalized on the distraction and leveled Becky with boot to the face. Charlotte tried to roll Becky up and use the ropes but the referee caught it. Bayley tagged in and countered the Figure Four with a roll-up for the victory.
Shane McMahon Got The Better Of Roman Reigns
Elias spoke to Shane McMahon at the beginning of this week’s SmackDown. Elias apologized for losing to Roman Reigns in embarrassing fashion at Money in the Bank and claimed that he just got lost in his musical performance. Elias said that he wanted to be in Shane’s corner for his match against Roman Reigns at Super Show-Down. Shane wasn’t interested but said that he would be in Elias’ corner tonight for his match against Reigns because Elias needs the help.
Reigns and Elias squared off in this week’s main event and the SmackDown Commissioner was ringside for the match. Roman sent Elias to the apron and hit the Drive-By to start off the match. Shane danced around and distracted Reigns for a bit. Elias capitalized with a low blow and then a DDT for a near fall.
Roman booted Elias to the mat and geared up in the corner of the ring. Shane distracted Roman again and Elias connected with a knee to the face. Elias planted Reigns with a Powerbomb and went for the cover but Roman kicked out at two.
Reigns battled back again and hit Elias with the Superman Punch. Roman went for the cover but Shane put Elias’ foot on the rope. Reigns hit Shane with the Drive-By but Elias once again capitalized. Elias slammed Roman into the barricade and then rolled him back in the ring.
Elias connected with an Elbow Drop but Reigns kicked out at two. Shane distracted the official again as Elias picked up his guitar. Roman hit Elias with the Spear for the pinfall victory. After the match, Shane tried to hit Reigns with the guitar but walked into a Superman Punch. Roman then picked up the guitar but turned around into a Claymore Kick from Drew McIntyre.
Roman Reigns versus an authority figure doesn’t interest me at all. I’m sure Shane and Roman will be on an entertaining match at the PPV, but the build has been very generic so far. Overall, SmackDown was decent this week. There were a couple of good matches and the Ziggler attack was great. I just wish he didn’t cut the same promo he has been doing for years a half hour later.
