The July 11th episode of WWE SmackDown aired live from Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, CA. Here are 4 takeaways from this week’s show:
Shane McMahon Defeated The Miz Again
The Miz kicked off this week’s show wearing a shirt with his dad’s face on it. The Miz stated that he has been told that he must follow the script tonight and pulled out a piece of paper. Miz read directly off the page and introduced McIntyre and Shane McMahon. The Miz jokingly called Shane McMahon the “breast in the world” and then “pest of the world””.
Elias came down to the ring with McIntyre and McMahon. Shane demanded that Greg Hamilton give him a proper introduction as the best in the world. Shane stated that all great talk shows have a musical guest and that is why Elias was here.
Shane boasted about defeating Roman Reigns at Super ShowDown and added that Roman shouldn’t be ashamed about losing to the best in the world. The Miz claimed that all of Shane’s accomplishments were tainted and that Reigns systematically destroyed Shane at Super ShowDown until McIntyre interfered.
The Miz rolled footage of Roman Reigns’ interview following his loss to Shane at Super ShowDown. Reigns said that he was going to kick ass and take names at Stomping Grounds and the first name is Drew McIntyre.
McIntyre vowed to boot Reigns’ head off at Stomping Grounds with the Claymore Kick. The Miz said Drew McIntyre is wasting his potential on being Shane McMahon’s lackey. Shane told The Miz that he was born into a genetic cesspool because his father is a baked potato. McMahon announced that if Miz defeats Elias and McIntyre tonight, he will get a match against him tonight.
The Miz defeated Elias, but McIntyre attacked him right after the match. McIntyre then quickly defeated Miz with the Claymore Kick. After the match, Shane McMahon said he wanted to face The Miz anyway, and beat him down. The Miz tried to fight back but Shane choked him out for the victory.
It is ridiculous how much screen time Shane McMahon is getting on both RAW and SmackDown right now. He is not giving a new superstar a push, he is wrestling established stars like The Miz and Roman Reigns. I honestly do not understand the point of these feuds, or why WWE is having Shane cut so many promos when he is terrible at them. This terrible segment took up thirty minutes of tonight’s show.
Bayley Easily Defeated Nikki Cross
Alexa Bliss had a conversation with Nikki Cross backstage. Bliss convinced Cross that Bayley was really a bully and secured Nikki a match against her tonight. Bliss told Cross to not hold back during the match.
Nikki Cross and Alexa Bliss came down to the ring later in the show to Alexa’s theme, even though she wasn’t the one wrestling in the match. Brilliant.
Bayley controlled the match early and Cross rolled out of the ring to regroup. Bayley went for a Dropkick but Cross caught her in the ring apron and beat her down. Back in the ring, Cross planted Bayley with a Neckbreaker for a two count.
Bayley connected with a running knee and followed it up with a Splash for a near fall. Alexa hopped up on the ring apron for a distraction and Cross capitalized with a roll-up for a two count. Bayley leveled Cross and then made her way up to the top rope. Bayley pointed at Bliss and then delivered an Elbow Drop for the pinfall victory.
Big E Returned
Big E returned and came down to the ring with Xavier Woods and WWE Champion Kofi Kingston. Ziggler quickly interrupted New Day’s promo and claimed that Kofi Kingston betrayed the fans and himself.
Ziggler called Kofi a coward and claimed that there was only one reason he is WWE Champion. Dolph rolled footage from Super ShowDown of Xavier Woods booting him on the ring apron during the match.
Dolph claimed that now Kofi has to admit that it should have been him. Ziggler added that there will be nowhere for Kofi to hide at Stomping Grounds inside the steel cage. He added that he will prove that without his friends, Kofi cannot beat him.
Kingston pointed out that Ziggler attacked Woods first at Super ShowDown. Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn joined the party and stated that they cannot stand injustice. Zayn wondered why the crowd was okay with Kingston cheating to keep his title and claimed that the crowd had no morals.
Big E joked that that the New Day enjoyed watching Seth Rollins beat Zayn down with a chair last night. Sami called the crowd idiots for cheering and then stated that everyone in the crowd was a hypocrite. New Day vowed to beat Ziggler, Owens, and Xavier Woods down tonight.
New Day Picked Up A Win
New Day squared off against Ziggler, Owens, and Sami Zayn in the main event. Dolph beat Woods down to start off the match and then tagged Sami in. Woods leveled Zayn with a Dropkick and brought him to the corner of the ring.
Kingston tagged in and hit a Dropkick of his own for a two count. Kofi went for a Splash in the corner but Sami got out of the way and Kingston tumbled out of the ring. Ziggler connected with a cheap shot on Kingston and then tagged into the match.
Back in the ring, Dolph applied a Chin Lock in the center of the ring. Kingston broke free but Ziggler sent him to the outside with a Dropkick. Owens then hit Kingston with a Senton as SmackDown went to a commercial break.
When SmackDown returned, Kingston connected with a Dropkick off the second rope to Kevin Owens. Woods tagged in and Ziggler crotched him on the top turnbuckle. Owens clubbed away at Woods’ back and then taunted Big E on the ring apron.
Ziggler raked Woods’ eyes across the top rope and then brought Xavier back tot he corner. Zayn tagged in and booted Woods in the face. Xavier battled back with some chops but Zayn knocked him back down to the canvas.
Owens tagged in and slammed Woods to the canvas. Owens followed it up with a Moonsault off the second rope for a near fall. Xavier connected with a DDT and Big E tagged in.
Ziggler tagged in and walked into three Belly to Belly Suplexes from Big E. Big E followed it up with a Splash and Dolph crawled to the apron. Big E went for a Spear but Ziggler got his knee up.
Kingston tagged in as Big E lifted Dolph up on his shoulders. Sami tagged in and Dolph accidentally hit him with a Superkick. Kingston hit Dolph with Trouble in Paradise and then delivered another one to Sami Zayn.
There was not a single thing that happened during tonight’s show that had any value at all. New Day, Owens, Ziggler, and Zayn had a promo to start the second hour of the show. It accomplished nothing and then had a pointless 6-man tag match 45 minutes later in the main event.
