5 Takeaways From WWE SmackDown (9/18)

The September 18th episode of WWE SmackDown Live aired live from the BOK Center in Tulsa, OK. In addition to the takeaways below, Randy Orton invaded the WWE production truck and forced them to show him footage of his beatdown of Jeff Hardy at Hell in a Cell.

Here are 5 takeaways from this week’s show:

Bryan & The Miz Will Battle At Super Show-Down For A Title Shot

Miz TV kicked off this week’s episode of WWE SmackDown. The Miz announced that he will be facing Daniel Bryan at WWE Super Show-Down. The winner of that match will get a shot at the WWE Championship.

The Miz announced that Maryse will be his guest on Miz TV. Maryse claimed that she was a much better athlete than Brie Bella and that she didn’t stand a chance against her. Maryse claimed that Brie’s heart wasn’t in it this past Sunday at Hell in a Cell because of motherhood. The Miz said that Brie’s heart was no longer in her relationship with Daniel Bryan.

Miz called their marriage a marriage of convenience and added that it backfired because they came up against a real couple. Maryse announced that tonight would be her last night on SmackDown for a bit and the crowd responded by chanting “yes!”. The Miz scolded the crowd and then called out Daniel Bryan.

Bryan came down to the entrance ramp and said that Miz is going to get his ass kicked because he talked about his wife. Daniel charged the ring and Dropkicked Miz in the ring. The Miz fell back into Maryse in the corner of the ring and Maryse fell to the canvas. Daniel put his head in his hands and then apologized to Maryse as she was about to be placed on a stretcher.

Maryse then got up with a smile on her face and laughed in Bryan’s face. The Miz went for the Skull Crushing Finale from behind but Bryan escaped. The Miz then went for a Clothesline but Bryan dodged it and Miz hit Maryse on the ring apron. Bryan Clotheslined Miz out of the ring and celebrated with a “yes!” chant to end the segment.

Kofi started off the match in control and sent Cesaro out of the ring as SmackDown went to a commercial break. When SmackDown returned, Cesaro was in control and leveled Kingston with an uppercut to his face for a near fall.

Kofi connected with an Enziguri and made his way to the top rope. Cesaro hit Kingston with a Dropkick but Kofi responded with a Tornado DDT off the second rope for a two count. Kofi knocked Cesaro out of the ring and then flipped onto him.

Back in the ring, Kingston went for a roll-up but Cesaro kicked out at two. Cesaro got right up and hit Kingston with a massive uppercut. Cesaro followed it up with the Neutralizer for the pinfall victory.

Aiden English Attacked Rusev

Rusev blamed Aiden English for their loss at WWE Hell in a Cell. English then went on a rant to a worker backstage about how Lana should have been more of a manager than a wife. Lana heard it all and Aiden apologized when he realized Lana was still there. Lana said that she was going to tell Rusev and then walked away.

Lana tried to tell Rusev about what Aiden said but Rusev cut her off and said that he is focused on his United States Championship match against Shinsuke Nakamura. Rusev then asked Aiden English to do his introduction and English obliged. Rusev started off the bout in control and planted Nakamura with an overhead Suplex for a near fall. Nakamura battled with a kick to Rusev’s face as SmackDown went to a commercial break.

When SmackDown returned, Nakamura had Rusev in a Headlock and English grabbed a microphone and tried to start a Rusev Day chant. Rusev booted Shinsuke in the face and then leveled him with a Clothesline. Rusev went for the Machka Kick but Shinsuke got out of the way at the last second. Rusev connected with a spin kick to the side of Nakamura’s head for a near fall.

Nakamura poked Rusev in the eye and then hit him with a knee to the face. Shinsuke slammed Rusev into the barricade and then brought him back inside the ring. Nakamura geared up for the Kinshasa but Rusev countered with the Machka Kick. Aiden English got up on the ring apron and shouted “Rusev crush!” on the microphone.

Rusev got distracted and Nakamura capitalized with a roll-up for the pinfall victory. After the match, Aiden English attacked Rusev from behind and bashed him on the head with the microphone several times. English then said “happy Rusev Day!” before leaving the ring.

Styles connected with a DDT when SmackDown returned and both Superstars fell to the canvas. Almas was the first up and hit AJ with an elbow to the face for a two count. AJ got back up and planted Almas with a Neckbreaker and followed it up with a forearm to Almas’ face.

Almas knocked AJ to the canvas and went for a standing Moonsault but Styles got his knees up. Andrade hung up AJ in the ropes and delivered a Double Stomp to Styles’ chest and both Superstars fell to the floor outside the ring. Styles tried to get back inside the ring but Almas greeted him with a kick to the face as SmackDown went to another break.

When SmackDown returned, AJ connected with a knee to Almas’ face outside the ring. AJ rolled Almas back inside the ring and hit him with a forearm to Andrade’s back for a two count.

AJ went for the Styles Clash but Almas escaped and bounced AJ throat-fist off the top rope. Andrade quickly climbed to the top rope and connected with a Dropkick to Styles. Almas followed it up with Double Knees in the corner of the ring for a near fall. AJ went for a roll-up and then transitioned into an awesome Styles Clash for the pinfall victory.

After the match, Samoa Joe ambushed Styles from behind. Joe tried to slam AJ into the steel steps but Styles escaped and slammed Joe into the steps. Joe then poked AJ in the eye and shouted that Styles will never be safe. Joe then hopped over the barricade and retreated through the crowd as Styles posed on the top rope with the WWE Championship.

AJ Styles will once again defend the WWE Championship against Samoa Joe at WWE Super Show-Down.

Becky Lynch Beatdown Charlotte Flair

SmackDown GM Paige introduced SmackDown Women’s Champion Becky Lynch down to the ring for a championship celebration. Becky claimed that she built the SmackDown women’s by herself and called Charlotte Flair down to the ring.

Charlotte said that she was not here to fight tonight and that she was not here to steal Becky’s spotlight. Flair said that Becky beat her at Hell in a Cell and congratulated her on the victory. Flair then stated that she was invoking her rematch clause at WWE Super Show-Down.

Lynch then asked Charlotte to put the title around her waist. Flair declined and Lynch said that she was joking and that she just wants Charlotte to call her queen. Charlotte started to walk away and Lynch called her a bitch.

Flair attacked Becky but Lynch was ready and launched her over the announce table. Lynch then rolled Charlotte into the ring and applied the Dis-Arm-Her. Lynch followed it up with an Exploder Suplex. Becky then raised the title on the entrance ramp as SmackDown went off the air.
