The June 10th episode of WWE RAW aired live from Sap Center in San Jose, CA. It was the first episode of RAW following WWE Super ShowDown. Here are 6 takeaways from this week’s RAW:
Baron Corbin Will Choose A Special Referee For The Universal Championship Match At Stomping Grounds
Universal Champion Seth Rollins kicked this week’s show and brought a chair down to the ring. Rollins defeated Baron Corbin at Super ShowDown and then fought off Brock Lesnar with the chair after the match.
Rollins stated that there is not a person on the planet that can lace his boots and noted his beatdown of Lesnar at Super ShowDown. He said that it felt great to leave Lesnar laying in the middle of the ring.
Baron Corbin interrupted to a chorus of boos from the crowd and he told them that the feeling is mutual. Corbin waited for the crowd to stop chanting “you suck!” before finally continuing his promo.
Corbin told Rollins that he should be worrying about him because he will take Rollins’ at Stomping Grounds. Baron claimed that WWE referee John Cone cost him the match at Super ShowDown and added that he will be severely punished for his actions.
Baron announced that he has been in meetings all day and will get to pick a special referee for the title match. Rollins joked that Corbin doesn’t have any friends and that his own dog doesn’t like him.
Sami Zayn joined the party and stated that being Universal Champion is not good for Seth. Zayn claimed that Lesnar and Rollins were trying to protect their fragile egos. Sami suggested that Corbin will be a better Universal Champion because he isn’t obsessed with Brock Lesnar.
Seth congratulated Corbin on finding the one idiot in the room that has his back. Kevin Owens interrupted and said that he agreed that Baron Corbin would be a better Universal Champion than Rollins. Seth then challenged Owens to a match in tonight’s main event.
Evans & Bliss Picked Up A Win
RAW Women’s Champion Becky Lynch and Lacey Evans sat down for interview about their rematch at Stomping Grounds.
Lynch stated that Evans should beat her because she is bigger and strong. Becky said that she simply cannot allow someone like her to be champion. She added that being the champ is her obsession and Lacey is just another obstacle that she has to overcome.
Evans claimed that “The Man” was just a mask and what really drives Becky is fear of falling back into obscurity. Evans then sniffed the air and said that she can smell the fear on Becky and vowed to take the RAW Women’s Championship at Stomping Grounds.
Later on RAW, Becky Lynch teamed up with Bayley against Evans and Alexa Bliss. Nikki Cross was ringside for the match. Lacey and Bliss controlled the match early and isolated Bayley in the corner of the ring.
Lynch tagged in and locked up with Lacey. Evans booted Becky in the ribs and bounced her face off the turnbuckle. Bliss tagged in and walked into a boot to the face from Becky.
Evans battled back and applied a Chin Lock but Becky broke free with an Arm Drag. Evans stomped Becky down in the corner of the ring and then taunted Bayley on the apron. Lacey connected with a Neckbreaker and went for the cover but Becky kicked out at two. Lacey went for a Moonsault off the top rope but Lynch got out of the way.
Bayley and Bliss tagged in and Bayley took control. Bayley Powerbombed Alexa into the turnbuckle but Lacey broke up the cover. Lacey tagged herself in and hit the Woman’s Right for the pinfall victory.
Bayley got a great reaction from her hometown crowd but the audience was dead for this entire match. Neither women’s title match has any momentum heading into Stomping Grounds.
Paul Heyman Warned Seth Rollins
Paul Heyman came down to the ring and said that he was disturbed by the level of animosity between Seth Rollins and Brock Lesnar. Heyman scolded the crowd for cheering for Seth Rollins and said that he was not a worthy Universal Champion.
Heyman called Rollins a “feckless thug” and added that he was stupid for attacking Seth. Paul stated that it was “no more Mr. Nice Jew” and they will no longer inform anyone when Lesnar will cash in. Paul suggested that when Lesnar shows up, he will inflict a beating that will not be suitable for the PG era in WWE.
Shane McMahon & Drew McIntyre Cut A Boring Promo
Shane McMahon and Drew McIntyre came down to the ring to celebrate Shane’s victory over Roman Reigns at Super ShowDown. Balloons, champagne, and the Best in the World trophy were set up in the ring.
Shane said that Roman Reigns is a future WWE Hall of Famer but does not hold a victory over him. The crowd sat in painful silence as Shane claimed that Roman’s best wasn’t good enough to beat the “Best in the World”.
McMahon asked the crowd to give it up for Drew McIntyre and thankfully a few of them booed. The crowd broke out in a very loud “boring” chant and Shane told the crowd to get used to it because this is his celebration.
McIntyre said that he wished this celebration was anywhere but San Jose because they have no respect. Drew vowed to hurt Roman Reigns at Stomping Grounds and humiliate him. McIntyre said that he was going to beat Roman Reigns so bad that he will be unrecognizable.
Shane and Drew drank some champagne and welcomed The Revival down to the ring. McMahon told them that they will be invited to the party if they win the tag titles tonight.
WWE has so much talent on their roster, yet they choose to put on pointless promos like this. The first two hours of RAW were boring as hell, so it is no wonder that the crowd turned on this segment.
The Revival Captured The RAW Tag Team Championships
Hawkins & Ryder defended the RAW Tag Team Championships against The Usos and The Revival in a Triple Threat Match. Ryder and Jey Uso Clothesline The Revival out of the ring to start the match.
Ryder took control and tagged Hawkins in. The Revival brought Hawkins out of the ring and launched him into the barricade as RAW went to a break. When RAW returned, Dawson and Hawkins were battling in the ring.
The Usos leveled Revival with a Crossbody and then Jimmy connected with a Samoan Drop on Dawson for a near fall. Ryder tagged in and hit Jimmy with a Blockbuster off the second rope for a two count.
Jey tagged in and hit Ryder with a Splash off the top rope. Scott Dawson tagged himself in and then Ryder to win the RAW Tag Team Championships.
Rollins Sent A Message To Corbin
Seth Rollins squared off against Kevin Owens in the main event of this week’s RAW. Sami Zayn was appointed as the special outside the ring referee by Shane McMahon.
Sami Zayn shared a hug with referee John Cone before the match and John to trust him. Zayn checked Rollins and comically asked if he had a knife. Rollins got distracted by Zayn early in the match and Owens capitalized by stomping on Seth in the corner.
Rollins knocked Owens out of the ring and went after him but Sami got in his way. Owens once again capitalized and planted Rollins with a DDT as RAW went to a commercial break.
When RAW returned, Owens connected with a Dropkick and then attacked Rollins’ injured ribs. Rollins battled back with a Slingblade but Owens quickly sent him back to the canvas. Owens went for a Senton off the top rope but Seth got his knees up at the last moment.
Rollins and Owens traded Superkicks and then Rollins connected with an Enziguri. Seth made his way to the top rope but Sami Zayn got into the ring. Rollins hopped off the turnbuckle and Owens rolled him up for a two count. Seth sent Owens out of the ring and hit a Suicide Dive.
Back in the ring, Rollins hit The Stomp and went for the cover but Sami dragged John Cone out of the ring. Rollins then confronted Sami which resulted in a disqualification. Baron Corbin then came down to the ring and attacked Rollins. Corbin grabbed a steel chair and charged at Rollins. Seth booted Corbin out of the ring and then beat Sami down with the chair.
Rollins continued to strike Zayn with the chair as Baron Corbin watched on from the entrance ramp. Seth unloaded several more shots with the chair and Sami rolled out of the ring. Seth rolled him back inside and hit Zayn with The Stomp to close the show.
This week’s episode of RAW was atrocious as usual. I’m hoping that WWE has simply become complacent and once they get some actual competition, they will try again. The more likely, and far worse scenario is that they actually believe that this is good television.
