The November 29th, 2019 episode of WWE SmackDown aired live from the Legacy Arena in Birmingham, AL. In addition to the takeaways below, Elias returned during tonight’s show.
Here are 6 takeaways from this week’s episode of SmackDown:
Roman Reigns Destroyed Robert Roode
Roman Reigns kicked off this week’s show to a great reaction from the crowd. Reigns wished the crowd a Happy Thanksgiving and stated that Thanksgiving means family, good health, and happiness.
Reigns pointed out that he had a tough year in 2018 and that it feels great to be back in the ring surrounded by the fans. Roman boasted about Team SmackDown winning the men’s match at Survivor Series.
Roman thanked Ali, Shorty G, and Braun Strowman for their efforts at the PPV. He referred to Baron Corbin as a dummy and refused to thank him. King Corbin came down to the entrance ramp and bragged about eliminating two people before Reigns selfishly betrayed the team and got him eliminated.
Reigns challenged Corbin to come down to the ring for a fight but Baron declined. Corbin claimed that Reigns is an egomaniac that is a step behind. Baron added that he had a feast for Thanksgiving and has servants that hand him a new fork if he drops one. Corbin took a shot at the crowd and suggested that Reigns fight Robert Roode.
Roode controlled the match early as Corbin cheered him on from ringside. Robert went for the Glorious DDT but Reigns countered into a Powerbomb for a two count. Roode rolled out of the ring to regroup and Roman followed him out there.
Reigns went for the Superman Punch but caught Ziggler instead. Roode capitalized and slammed Roman into the steel steps. Back in the ring, Reigns hit a Superman Punch and went for the cover but Roode kicked out at two.
Roman went for the another Superman Punch but Roode countered into a Spinebuster. Corbin slid the scepter into the ring but Reigns avoided it. Roman hit Corbin with a Superman Punch and then connected with a Spear on Roode for the pinfall victory.
After the match, Ziggler attacked Roman and set up for a Superkick. Reigns countered into a Samoan Drop but Roode then attacked him with the scepter. Roode brought a chair into the ring and placed Roman’s head on it. Roode tried to bash him in the head with the scepter but Reigns got out of the way. Roman then hit Roode with a Superman Punch and a Spear through the barricade. Reigns piled several chairs on top of Roode and flipped the announce table on top of him.
Sheamus Is Returning Soon
A vignette for Sheamus aired tonight on SmackDown. Sheamus stated that the current state of SmackDown is pathetic and that all he sees is a bunch of cowards.
Sheamus added that there is nobody with a backbone and no one is as hungry as him. He stated that SmackDown has become soft and now is the perfect time for him to return. Sheamus vowed that SmackDown will be his when he comes back.
Lacey Evans Confronted Bayley & Banks
SmackDown Women’s Champion Bayley and Sasha Banks came down to the ring to address the entire women’s division tonight. Sasha Banks complained about not being able to choose her own team at Survivor Series.
Bayley started to talk but the crowd started to chant “you tapped out!”. Bayley claimed that Shayna Baszler is not better than her and that SmackDown lost because the entire locker room let them down.
Banks insulted Nikki Cross, Dana Brooke, Carmella, and Lacey Evans. Bayley suggested that Lacey spend some more time in the ring instead of sipping tea on her porch.
Lacey Evans interrupted and said that it is time for a woman with class to lead the division. Evans mocked Bayley for tapping out and Banks got in her face. Evans laid out Banks with the Woman’s Right and exited the ring.
I found Evans’ line about Bayley tapping out amusing because Lacey has recently tapped out to Natalya’s Sharpshooter. This feud seems quite random and I don’t have any interest in it at the moment.
Alexa Bliss Returned To Save Nikki Cross
Nikki Cross battled Sonya Deville tonight on SmackDown. Before the match, Mandy Rose idiotically insulted Nikki Cross by saying that she looked like a cold plate of Thanksgiving leftovers.
Cross quickly won the match via a roll-up. After the match, Deville and Rose attacked Nikki Cross from behind. Alexa Bliss made her return and rushed down to the ring. Cross and Bliss fought them off and then celebrated in the ring.
New Day Retained
New Day put their SmackDown Tag Team Titles on the line tonight by issuing an open challenge. Shinsuke Nakamura, Cesaro, and Sami Zayn came down to the entrance ramp and Sami went on a rant about Thanksgiving and Black Friday. Cesaro and Nakamura then battled for the titles.
Zayn distracted Kofi and Nakamura capitalized with a running knee to the ribs for a two count. Sami once again distracted Kofi and Cesaro hit an uppercut that sent Kingston over the announce table as SmackDown went to a commercial break.
Whan SmackDown returned, Big E tagged in and planted Nakamura with a few Belly to Belly Suplexes. Big E went for a Splash but Nakamura was able to get out of the way. Nakamura hit Big E with a boot to the face and Cesaro tagged in.
Cesaro climbed to the top rope and hit a flying headbutt for a near fall. Shinsuke and Kingston tagged in and Kofi connected with a Double Stomp for a near fall. Cesaro sent Big E into the ring post and then tagged back in.
Kingston went for Trouble in Paradise but Cesaro caught him. Sami hopped in the ring with the tray of pancakes but the referee caught him and threw him out. Kofi then hit Cesaro with Trouble in Paradise to retain the titles.
Daniel Bryan Accepted The Fiend’s Challenge
Bray Wyatt suggested another match with Daniel Bryan during the latest episode of Firefly Funhouse.
Daniel Bryan was interviewed backstage later on the show but was immediately interrupted by another episode of Firefly Funhouse. Huskus rapped about being fat and Wyatt did the muscle man dance as Bryan watched on a monitor. Bryan was asked for a response but just stood in silence to conclude the segment.
The Miz approached Daniel Bryan backstage and told him that he is very important to SmackDown and that they cannot afford to lose him. Miz added that Bryan’s family cannot afford to lose him and Daniel got pissed off.
Daniel Bryan made his way to the ring at the end of this week’s show. Bryan stated that a lot of people gave him unsolicited advice tonight, including The Miz. Daniel added that he walked into his match against The Fiend at Survivor Series as nervous as he has ever been.
Bryan pointed out that he felt changed during that match but it wasn’t because of The Fiend, it was because of the fans. Daniel stated that the fans may have brought the Yes Movement back to life. He asked the crowd if he should accept Bray’s challenge and the crowd chanted “yes!”.
Bray Wyatt interrupted from the Firefly Funhouse and said that The Miz is right because The Fiend will remove Daniel’s mask and show everyone his true colors. Wyatt hinted at his past with Bryan and that The Fiend didn’t forget.
The lights in the arena went red and The Fiend popped up from under the ring. Bryan tried to fight back but The Fiend locked in the Mandible Claw and dragged Daniel under the ring. Wyatt started ripping off Daniel’s hair and placing it in the ring as SmackDown went off the air.
Bryan and Wyatt had a solid match at Survivor Series but I’m expecting a better one at TLC. It’ll be interesting to see what Bryan will look like on next week’s show. Overall, this was an okay episode of SmackDown. The first forty minutes of the show was devoted to the Reigns & Corbin feud and the rest of the show felt a bit rushed. It was good to see Elias and Bliss back on the show but I’m definitely looking forward to Sheamus coming back the most. I wouldn’t mind seeing Sheamus have another singles push as a heel.
