AJ Styles was already a huge name in professional wrestling before coming to WWE, and his year with the company in 2017 was nothing less that stellar. “The Phenomenal One” became the first person in WWE history to win the WWE Championship outside of North America when he defeated Jinder Mahal at a SmackDown Live taping in Manchester, England during WWE’s European Tour.
After making history in 2017, Styles has already made history in 2018 just two days into the new year. Styles joins Superstars such as Bruno Sammartino, Bob Backlund, Hulk Hogan, John Cena and, CM Punk who have started and ended a calendar year while holding the WWE Championship. He won the strap back in 2016 from Dean Ambrose at the Backlash pay-per-view (PPV) before going on to lose it to John Cena in January of 2017 at the Royal Rumble.
He then beat Mahal on SmackDown Live back in November and retained the title into the new year. Now we await to see how WWE uses Styles heading into WrestleMania 34 and who will challenge “The Phenomenal One” at “The Show Of Shows” for the WWE Title.
