Murphy has held the title since he was able to beat Cedric Alexander to win the title at WWE Super Show-Down pay-per-view event at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in Melbourne, Australia. As a result of this win, it marks the first reign as WWE Cruiserweight Champion for Murphy and his first title win on the main roster.
Tozawa earned this championship match when he defeated Cedric Alexander, Lio Rush, and Humberto Carrillo in a fatal four-way elimination match n the February 5, 2019 episode of 205 Live on WWE’s streaming service.
