Former WWE World Heavyweight Champion Jake Hager, better known as Jack Swagger from his time with the WWE, is still preparing for his MMA debut after signing with the Viacom-owned promotion, Bellator MMA, back in November 2017.
Since that announcement, he put his MMA career on hold while wrestling for Lucha Underground.
During a recent interview with Submission Radio, he noted that he has continued to train for his pro-MMA debut as he works on his skills as a well-rounded fighter. He stated in this interview that fight fans around the world should expect his promotional debut to take place soon.
“Yeah, I think I absolutely will fight in 2018,” Hager said (transcript courtesy of MMAJunkie). “It’s too late now to fight twice in 2018. I got real busy with professional wrestling with ‘Lucha Underground’ back at the beginning of the year. Bellator’s been great to work with. They allowed me to do that and continue making a name for myself outside the (cage), which just goes for miles and miles for someone that I want to work with. You know, it really means a lot when they make it easy, and they make you feel like you’re wanted there.”
Swagger continued by stating that he will make a statement in his first fight in a few months as he is already in shape and has a training camp going. When asked about an opponent, he noted that it’s a little bit above his pay grade to make that statement but rather will rely on his team and manager to decide.
“ I would want someone similar to me, but at the same time, I’m doing this for a reason, so I’m not going to shy away. If the team tells me I’m ready for this person, then let’s go get ‘em.”
