No More Raw Guest Stars, Phoenix Comments On Being Sidelined

— After over a year and a half, the WWE Raw Guest Star concept has apparently come to an end. WWE.com has removed the Raw Guest Star section from its Raw section.

— In May, Beth Phoenix suffered a devastating ACL tear during a WWE Superstars match against Rosa Mendes. She subsequently dropped the Women’s Championship to Layla and sat on the sidelines for six months to recover. “The Glamazon” spoke to WWE.com regarding her road to recovery and revealed that she initially feared that she would not be able to return to the ring.

WWE Defends Decision To Hold Show Despite Weather Warnings

World Wrestling Entertainment spokesman Adam Hopkins responded to Newsday.com writer Alfonso Castillo’s article questioning the company’s decision to not postpone its Sunday night live event at Madison Square Garden, despite forecasts of a severe blizzard and warnings by the Long Island Rail Road that it would suspend service if the weather became too severe.

“WWE tries its best not to let down our fans due to the weather,” Hopkins said.

“After weighing several factors and consulting with Madison Square Garden management, The Garden was in favor of us running the event as they have a good track record of doing so during inclement weather, rarely postponing them.

“Public transportation was running, and this is a show in which a significant amount of ticket holders live in the city. All top WWE Talent had made it in to New York for the event.”

Hopkins added that the event drew 13,600 people, “which was more than those that attended the respective Islanders and Devils games combined last night (according to attendance numbers on the boxscores of the team’s official websites).”

JR Blog: Lesnar Leaving UFC, Hardy Pleading Guilty, Punk-Nexus

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross is back with another blog, which you can read in its entirety at JRsBarBQ.com. Here are some highlights of what JR said about:

Rumors Of Brock Lesnar Leaving UFC: “Lots of crazy rumors floating around the MMA message boards about Brock Lesnar these days. Some fans feel that Lesnar is looking to leave UFC and return to WWE. That decision would floor me. It doesn’t seem to make sense at this time for Lesnar to leave UFC as there is too much Octagon money on the table for Brock to walk away at this time. I just can’t see the athletic freak going back on the WWE road for any significant length of time especially with young children at home and Brock being most comfortable when he is in the Minnesota woods enjoying family life and hunting. Don’t get me wrong, as a fan I would embrace a Lesnar return to WWE and it ‘might’ happen on a sporadic basis some day but not any time soon.”

CM Punk Joining Nexus: “The CM Punk/Nexus affiliation is intriguing. More questions than answers which is good. There is strength in numbers and it certainly puts the ‘hero,’ John Cena, in an uphill struggle. Punk is excellent both in the ring and on the mic and I look forward to seeing how the Cena-Punk scenario plays out over time. If they don’t get it on until the Royal Rumble match, I wouldn’t be offended. Sounds like Cena-Punk could theoretically be a solid WM27 attraction. Time will tell.”

Jeff Hardy Pleading Guilty To Drug Charges: “An emailer asked me what I thought about former WWE star Jeff Hardy’s ‘plea agreement’ to a variety of charges filed against him in North Carolina. I know only what I occasionally read on line about this unfortunate matter but if a plea agreement can bring this issue to an end and Jeff can move on with his life then it might be a good idea. Those types of decisions are better made by lawyers and the individuals involved and not by folks, like me, who are on the outside looking in.”

Brock Lesnar Reportedly Wants Out Of His UFC Contract

According to Dave Meltzer of Yahoo Sports, former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar is looking for an “exit strategy” to get out of his UFC contract, which most believe currently has one fight left on it. Lesnar “badly” wants to work WWE’s WrestleMania 27 pay-per-view in Atlanta next year and has been talking with WWE officials about how a deal can be reached..

In what sounds like a very telling piece of information, Brock Lesnar has not talked with anyone from UFC or answered Dana White’s phone calls since losing the UFC Heavyweight Title to Cain Velasquez last month. Sources also say that Lesnar has not been in the gym once since his devastating loss to Cain Velasquez at UFC 121.

It’s said that Lesnar has lost some interest in MMA and has been been re-considering his future in the sport after his loss to Velasquez and the beating he took in the win against Shane Carwin before that.

The MMA world has been buzzing about this story since Dave Melzer broke the news on Monday night. Meltzer said on his radio show that the fight with Velasquez has changed Brock’s attitude on fighting and he is at the stage in his life where he doesn’t want to get injured. He’s very well off financially and the business man in him apparently knows that it may be time to move on.

Lesnar, who is known for being unbelievably competitive, does not seem like the kind of guy to just walk away from MMA after such a crushing loss without trying to get revenge or end his career with a win. On the other hand, he may have realized that the gap between his abilities and those of new champion Cain Velasquez is too big to overcome.

Lesnar has been hunting and hasn’t even thought about his next fight. Lesnar apparently wants to do WrestleMania “badly” and will earn an estimated 2 million dollars for 30 minutes of work.

Its widely known that Lesnar was miserable with WWE’s brutal travel schedule and vowed to never be on the road with WWE 200 days a year again. With the mainstream success he’s had in the UFC and the insane drawing power he’s displayed during his time there, he could make a truckload of money working WrestleMania and a few other limited appearances.

COMMENT BELOW: What do you guys think – should Lesnar try to get out of his contract and return to WWE? Has he proven himself in the MMA world yet and earned everybody’s respect  – or would this be another move that MMA fans would heavily criticize?

CM Punk Joins Nexus: Joey Styles & Nexus Comment

At the end of Monday’s WWE RAW from Albany, the Nexus crew attacked John Cena and beat him down badly. Out came CM Punk, who gave Cena the GTS, took a chair and sat in the middle of the ring. He took a Nexus “N” armband, put it on and saluted the rest of the Nexus crew on the stage – appearing to join the group.

It should be interesting to see how CM Punk and Wade Barrett co-exist together with John Cena as their common enemy.

WWE employee Joey Styles commented on Twitter about Punk joining Nexus, writing:

“Nexus merchandise sales are ringing up on wweshop.com as we speak. CM Punk has just taken over Raw! Straight Edge Rules!”

@TheNexusWWE, the official Twitter account of the Nexus group, wrote this after RAW:

“SURPRISE!!! You just got “PUNKED” @JohnCena!!”

We’ll have more on what led to CM Punk joining Nexus and where the angle is headed here on SEScoops.com later this week.

RAW Preview For Tonight & An Update On Blizzard Travel Issues

– Tonight’s episode of WWE RAW will take place from the Times Union Center in Albany, New York.

No matches have been announced yet, but local advertising for the show has been promoting John Cena and Randy Orton vs. Wade Barrett and The Miz with Michael Cole as the special guest referee as the dark match main event.

Over the weekend, WWE creative discussed Nexus and Wade Barrett returning to television tonight. They were kept off last week’s show to sell the beatings they too at the hands of John Cena at the TLC pay-per-view.

One issue that may come into play tonight is the massive blizzard that hit the North East on Sunday and whether all of the RAW superstars will be able to make it to the arena. Several superstars and Divas were unable to make Sunday’s WWE live event at Madison Square Garden, which resulted in a bunch of last-minute substitutions. WWE’s production trucks are reportedly at the Times Union Center already, but all of the talent getting there is a different story.

JR Blog: Royal Rumble, TNA vs. WWE, Booker T, Younger Stars

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog, which you can read in its entirety at JRsBarBQ.com. Here are some highlights of what JR said about:

Who Will Win The Royal Rumble: “My early pick to win the 2011 Royal Rumble would have to be John Cena.”

WWE’s Future & Developing New Stars: “The long term future of WWE appears to be bright to me. The company has a strong infrastructure manned by some intelligent, hard working professionals and have continued to take positive steps in putting their footprint around the Globe.  As in any other entertainment or sports entity for that matter, the development of the next wave of superstars who can transcend the biz is imperative. WWE is an attraction oriented business and when new, main event level, attractions evolve and become established then ‘business will pick up’ without question.”

Whether TNA Ever Seriously Compete WWE: Some fans of TNA have asked me when I predict the time line that TNA will over take WWE in the marketplace. Without coming off as a tool but simply being totally realistic, the answer is never. But wait, there’s more….does it matter? I would suggest to you that TNA has all they can say grace over making their brand stronger and are likely, if they are smart, not even trying to compete w/ WWE but only with trying to make themselves better. WWE is the NFL and no other football league will ever touch the NFL. Period. End of story. That certainly doesn’t mean that another league can’t make money and be viable in their world. I’ll never wish TNA or any other company ill will but IMO this is the reality of the matter and the answer to a question we seemingly get all the time. I can assure you that I want our on line biz to grow but I don’t fixate on other similar sites but instead try to think of ways to make our site better.”

Booker T’s Potential As An Announcer: “I do think that Booker T could be an effective broadcaster on  a wrestling TV show if paired with the right partner and given some time to establish his body of work and timing with his partner. I could also see Booker being a great manager, if the manager role, which would be new in today’s world, was brought back. “

Ziggler Discusses Amateur Background, Kaitlyn’s Finishing Move

— The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review conducted an interview with Dolph Ziggler promoting tomorrow night’s SmackDown live event in Pittsburgh, PA. The Intercontinental Champion says his amateur wrestling background comes in handy for him inside the WWE ring.

“In high school and college, I worked hard as hell to be in great shape, to be good at what I did. A lot of that translates over, or at least helps with the mindset — constantly wanting to be better,” he says. “Also, because of my wrestling background, I’ve been able to apply a lot of moves that a lot of people haven’t seen in a long time — stuff I’ve actually used in college to win matches.

“I used to do this ‘crucifix pin,’ where you get a guy’s arm between your legs and another arm between your arms and you roll him on his back. I used to use that as a finishing move in high school and college. Now I actually use it almost every match. It’s really comfortable for me to go to place like that really quickly.”

Ziggler also feels that being able to entertain a crowd is just as, if not more, important than looking the part of a WWE Superstar.

“You have to differentiate yourself from other people,” he says. “There’s a million guys out there who are athletic. There’s a million 6-foot-8 guys who played football. It’s (about) being able to relate to the fans.”

— Despite winning the third season of NXT, Kaitlyn’s finishing move has yet to be made clear by WWE. According to the newly released Florida Championship Wrestling program, her finishing maneuver is the Flatliner, an attack the late Chris Kanyon popularized. However, her version is called the “Wedgie Flatliner.”

— The Score in Canada will be airing a marathon of WWE Vintage Collection on New Year’s Day from 5:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.

WWE Ranks Top 10 Submission Stars, Correction On SD Rating

— WWE posted a video on YouTube ranking the top 10 greatest WWE submission Superstars of all time. The ranking is as follows:

9. William Regal

8. Sgt. Slaughter

7. Daniel Bryan

6. Dean Malenko

5. Chris Jericho

4. Ric Flair

3. Bob Backlund

2. Kurt Angle

1. Bret Hart

Daniel Bryan criticized Flair’s Figure Four finishing maneuver by saying he didn’t win a lot of matches with it and therefore wouldn’t rate at the top.

— It was reported that last Tuesday’s live SmackDown episode on the USA Network drew a 2.5 cable rating. According to television industry sources, the show actually drew a 2.2 overall cable rating, with 3,812,000 viewers.

— Wednesday’s Tribute to the Troops broadcast on the USA Network drew a 1.8 cable rating over the course of two hours, with 3,013,000 viewers. The show did hours of 1.8 and 1.7.

Goldust Reveals His Severe Drug Problems While With TNA

WWE talent Dustin Rhodes (a/k/a Goldust) speaks frankly and openly about his journey through the professional wrestling industry in his newly released autobiography, Cross Rhodes: Goldust, Out of the Darkness. He gives a no-holds barred account of his severe drug problems, which notably persisted during his two stints with TNA Wrestling. In the book, he admits that his issues had worsened to the point that he was using cocaine prior to matches for the organization in 2005. Regarding this, he wrote:

“Eventually, and thanks to my dad, I started working for Total Nonstop Action for $1,000 a show. He was the boss, right under Dixie Carter. TNA wasn’t doing too well at that point, but I had a job making okay money. I could drive home just about every night. All I was doing was what little I had to do in the ring, then hanging out spending my money on coke, pills, and booze.

“I started making excuses for why I couldn’t hang with Dakota. Subconsciously I probably knew I didn’t want her around me or my girlfriend because the environment was so toxic. Despite the chaos, I showed up every night for work. I have no idea how I was able to stay on point with work at that time. One of my cardinal rules was never to drink before I worked a match. I wouldn’t consider doing coke before a match either. I’d take painkillers, fine. I had been taking painkillers for so long that I had convinced myself I really need them. I was taking medicine because I worked in a tough business. That was the story I had cemented into my mind. But drugs have a way of altering everything, including the stories you tell yourself. Eventually, I started doing a little coke before matches while retaining my vow to never drink alcohol before I go into the ring, as if that was something to be proud of.”

Rhodes parted ways with TNA Wrestling after being arrested on April 25, 2005 and charged with misdemeanor battery following a domestic incident with his girlfriend at the Hard Rock Hotel in Orlando, Florida. He would return to the organization two years later as the split personality character Black Reign. He said that time was the hardest period of his life as his painkiller usage increased.

“Every morning, as soon as I pulled myself out of bed, I’d take three Vicodins or Lortabs just to get moving. I was sore and pretty banged up physically, but over time pain pills exaggerated rather than eliminated whatever pain I was feeling. It was a slow process for me to get into the day. I’d get that first rush from pills and then I’d get moving. I might do something around the house, or jump into my truck and drive to the river to work on this book.”

He continues disclosing his severe self-medication issues, which culminated with the following in early 2008:

“I was probably taking close to forty pills a day at the end. I was so desperate that I actually bought pain pills from drug dealers because I would run out long before I could find another doctor to write a prescription. If I dropped a pill and it fell into the carpet, I would spend hours down on my hands and knees trying to find it. At the same time I was drinking so much that I’d wake up dizzy and unable to walk.

“Finally, after a three-day binge, I’d had enough. It was raining, I pulled myself up and walked right out the door. The rain was pouring down and I stumbled up a hill near this house where I knew I could get cell-phone reception. Somehow, I managed to call my dad. It was four thirty in the morning. I was falling down the hill in the mud. Ta-rel (his girlfriend) was trying to hold me up. I was scared half to death. I managed to get into the house, soaking wet.

“I had found the bottom.”

Rhodes, still affiliated with TNA Wrestling, then reveals calling Ann Russo-Gordon, the liaison between World Wrestling Entertainment and talent who take up the company’s offer for rehab. He remained locked away in a rehabilitation center for thirty days to face his demons and was successful. He credits his family and WWE, which he also considers family, for helping him turn his life around. He says he has remained sober since May 20, 2008.
