JBL Talks About TNA Challenging WWE On Monday Nights

Former WWE star JBL offered his thoughts on the WWE-TNA Monday Night War in his latest Facebook blog:

Layfield, who left WWE back in April 2009, sounds excited about the idea of TNA giving WWE a run for their money.

“I am loving the Monday Night Wars being back, or at least a one night skirmish on January 4th between WWE and TNA,” said Layfield.

“Greatest trade in history was Vince Russo to WCW, it drove WCW into bankruptcy and WWE to buying their competitor and establishing world dominance. We, at the time, were starting to think that Vince McMahon was sending Russo to destroy the competition it was so bad…

“TNA has the underdog and new guy going its way, it also has Eric Bischoff, who I greatly respect. I think Eric on his round two with Vince will be prepared. Along with Hulk (Hogan) who wants to badly compete with Vince as well.

“Main thing here is international TV rights, which both covet and make money off of. With Hulk and Eric in the mix, TNA will get clearance in many good markets to add to their international profile. Also, with Dixie Carter, who is a good friend and someone I respect-you won’t have the WCW oversized corporation.”

WWE Hoping For Jeff Hardy vs. CM Punk at WrestleMania

Jeff Hardy

Jeff Hardy

While there are a few pieces that still have to fall in place for this to happen, there is talk within WWE that Jeff Hardy will be brought back in time to wrestle C.M. Punk at WrestleMania 26.

At the time of his departure from WWE over the summer, the general feeling within WWE was that Hardy would be back in a few months. Just weeks after he left the company, police raided Hardy’s Cameron, North Carolina home and found a staggering quantity of prescription pills, among other substances. He was arrested and charged with multiple felonies. From the police report:

Jeffrey Nero Hardy was arrested on September 11, 2009 and charged with felony trafficking in opium, two counts of felony possession with intent to sell or deliver a Schedule III controlled substance, felony maintaining a dwelling to keep controlled substance, felony possession of cocaine, and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

At this point, the biggest obstacle between Jeff Hardy and a WWE return are the charges he’s facing. He is due back in court on January 27th for a probable cause hearing to determine whether there is enough evidence for his case to proceed to a grand jury. The grand jury would then decide whether to prosecute Hardy for the various felonies she’s been charged with.

With Linda McMahon’s United States Senate campaign a strong factor in what happens in WWE (ie. WWE toning down their product to TV-PG, family-friendly programming),  the feeling is that WWE would not want to bring him back until Hardy’s legal woes gets put to bed.

Shane Gone From WWE, Cashes Out Almost $1M In Stock

Shane McMahon is officially gone from WWE. He announced his resignation from the conpany back in October and stated he would be gone effective January 1, 2010.

Earlier this month December 17th, Shane cashed in 60,000 shares for $897,000 in gross proceeds. He also exercised his stock options to acquire 60,000 shares priced between $12.94 and $13.45 per share.

According to WWE’s latest SEC filings, Shane still owns 43,449 shares of WWE stock.

Melina Suffers Knee Injury At Tuesday House Show (PICTURES)

According to multiple reports, WWE Divas champion Melina appeared to suffer a knee injury at Tuesday night’s WWE Raw house show in Manchester, New Hampshire.

During a Divas tag match, Melina slipped on the mat and was immediately grabbing her knee. The match was ended abruptly, with Melina getting pinned quickly and helped out of the ring. She did not take any further bumps in the match after going down.

Sources within WWE fear that Melina suffered a torn ACL, according to a report at PWInsider.com. She was examined backstage and is seeing a specialist this week to diagnose the extent of the situation.

An update on the injury is expected soon.

Here are some photos of Melina’s injury, sent in by reader David O’Neil:

RAW Rating, Pot Use In WWE, Shad To Be A Father?

– The 12/28 edition of WWE Raw drew a 3.6 rating, up from last week’s disappointing 3.2. The show did hours of 3.49 and 3.73.

– There is a report going around that Cryme Tyme member Shad Gaspard and his girlfriend Siliana Chanel will having a child sometime in March before WrestleMania.

– As noted earlier, reports are that marijuana use is down on WWE’s SmackDown brand while up on the RAW side. One source notes that this is incorrect and both sides are about even when it comes to marijuana use these days. There are several superstars on both rosters that are being held back due to their fondness of the illicit green plant.

Ted DiBiase Recalls Stealing His Dad’s Million Dollar Belt

Ted DiBiase Jr.

Ted DiBiase Jr.

WWE Raw superstar Ted DiBiase spoke to Eric Cohen of About.com this week to promote the release of his new WWE Studios DVD, The Marine 2. During the interview, DiBiase told a story from his childhood when he brought his father’s Million Dollar title info school one day for show and tell.

“One time in fourth grade we had show and tell,” DiBiase recalled. “I stole my dad’s briefcase and I took it to show and tell. Everybody else is walking in with their backpacks and sack lunches pulling out these dolls and stuff. I’ve got this briefcase and everybody was like what is that.

“I was just saying it was a briefcase. When it came my turn, I put the briefcase up on the table, punched in the code, opened the briefcase, and there it is in all of its glory, the Million Dollar Belt. So I stole the Million Dollar Belt and took it to show and tell. So yeah, I was the most popular kid in class for a time after that.”

WWE RAW Results: Cena vs. Sheamus, Bret Announcement

Report by Kendra

RAW this week starts with outside the arena where Jericho is trying to get people to sign his petition. No one wants to sign and it’s getting ugly. He tells people, through his bullhorn, to stop taking pictures and sign. Lots of nos. He says he feels sorry for the children of America.

Music and pyro.

Cena’s music and he comes out to the ring all smiles and goofiness. Cena pulls up the ring skirt and pulls out a table. He slides it into the ring and goes in after it. In the ring Cena has trouble getting the table getting set up and on its feet! He lifts himself to sitting up on a corner of the ring. He’s impressed with the excitement of the fans. He says he is too. Two weeks ago this is where Sheamus became Champion. Two weeks ago, that right there (the table)n is how he became Champion. Tonight’s the final RAW of 2009 and he gets a rematch against Sheamus. Judging by their excitement he wants that rematch now. They’re so excited it can’t be a regular match, let’s make it a Tables Match. “Cena” chants. Sheamus comes out, down the ramp and to the ring. He climbs in the ring and stares over the table at Cena. Cena stares back. Sheamus grabs a mic and asks of Cena’s for real? Cena’s the challenger and the one with something to prove. Sheamus has nothing to prove because he’s the WWE Champion. That means RAW belongs to him. Cena says RAW belongs to the WWE Universe, get his fact straight. Cena asks if they’ll have a Tables Match. Sheamus says it won’t be a Tables Match. He’s already beaten Cena in a Tables Match. He’ll beat him one on one in a straight match in the main event. The last image of RAW in 2009 will be Sheamus standing over Cena’s broken body. Sheamus drops the mic and starts to leave, but Cena grabs him and hits an AA on Sheamus through the table. Cena leaves the ring.

– Commercial

Video recap of Cena jumping over the table then putting Sheamus through it.

King and Cole talk about Timbaland and his major party going on backstage.

Timbaland, the Bellas and Gail Kim hanging out. Josh in and asks about possibly postponing the main event to another date after what just happened in the ring. Timbaland asked why he’d postpone the biggest match of the century. Timbaland turned to the camera and asked the fans if they wanted to see that match. Not enough reaction, so he asked again. Timbaland said there it is and sat back with the Divas. They sofa danced together.

Cody and Ted walking through the back. Cody with a copy of The Marine 2. They talk about it and come up on Orton. Orton says they need to break up. He’s wasted a year and a half on them. Three guys with nothing in common beat them. They’re over. Orton says he’s not Champion and they’re not TTC. Cody says they keep rescuing Orton. Ted says they put their butts on the line for Orton, they should be thanking them! Orton says Ted will face Orton and Cody will face Henry. Orton will be ringside for both matches. They better win or… Cody asks what, he’ll kick them out of Legacy? Orton says he’ll kick them out and beat the hell out of them. Orton stomps off.

Outside Jericho is still stomping around with his bullhorn and a sign, but everyone’s inside!

Orton’s music and out to the ring he comes.

– Commercial

Jericho outside with his petition and bullhorn trying to get people to sign. People just keep walking by. Stop the injustice!

Chinlock on Evan in the center of the ring. Evan kicks out and whips Ted. Ted gets a foot up but then eats a hurricanrana for two! Ted down and Evan climbs, but Ted up and screwed up a reversal. Evan was supposed to fly over Ted’s head and land snake eyes on the corner, but missed it by a long shot and ended up flopping around and hitting the mat without much grace. Ted hits his finisher and pins for three.

– Winner: Ted

Orton barely nods at Ted’s win. Ted looks pissed.

– Commercial

Orton’s still sitting ringside. Cody out to the ring for his match. Video of Ted beating Evan in the last match. Mark Henry out to face him.

Cody leans out and glares at Orton after the bell. Henry grabs Cody and sends him flying across the ring! Henry about to splash down sitting on Cody, but he moves. Cody takes Henry down, but Henry comes back with clotheslines and a head butt. Cody hung up on the second rope. Henry ran and landed on Cody’s back and slid through. Henry’s playing an injured knee. Cody goes after the knee, hit’s a DDT and gets three from Henry.

– Winner: Cody

Cody glares down at Orton. Orton barely nods, but isn’t smiling. He leaves his seat and shakes Cody’s hand as they leave together.

Backstage Kim and Jillian are talking. Jillian wants to audition for Timbaland but Kim won’t let her in. Further down the hall they have Hornswoggle duct tapes to a skateboard. HBK doesn’t like this much. HHH says it’s not his fault, HBK had him all week and all he did was take the little heathen to church. HHH wants to have some fun! What do you do when you get a new midget? Tape him to a skateboard and see how far he’ll go! HHH asks why HBK’s so serious? HBK says it’s the Vince and Bret Hart thing. HHH says to stay out of it. Besides, they have Big Show and a partner of his choosing, so don’t do anything stupid. Jillian’s down the hall singing and they send Hornswoggle into her and she lands bum in a barrel.

– Commercial

Kelly up on the corner and Maryse slams her down. Maryse plans Kelly on the mat with a hard DDT for three.

– Winner: Maryse

Maryse celebrates. Video of high points in the match. Maryse grabs a mic and asks Melina if she’s watching, of course she is. Then Maryse speaks French. Maryse says Melina will never be as sexy as her. They both know Maryse is the next Divas Champion. Then more French. Maryse then kicks Kelly in the ribs before leaving the ring.

Backstage Vince heads for the ring.

– Commercial

Jericho outside screaming about conspiracies. Big Show comes up and asks what’s up? Jericho says he can’t let it go. Big Show tells him he has to. Jericho says it was special. Big Show says it was special, but they have to move on. Big Show says long distance relationships don’t last. Jericho asks if there’s someone else. Big Show says he has to let it go and hands him something. Jericho says he’ll cherish it forever. Big Show goes in. Jericho looks in the envelope and laughs.

Vince out to the ring. Many cat calls that went to “We want Bret” chants. Vince says it’s obvious everyone loves his guest host concept on RAW. Showing there’s nothing he wouldn’t do for them. He wants to talk about suggestions that next we have Bret Hart as the guest host next week. For the younger fans he put together a brief, but unbiased history of Bret Hart. “We want Bret!” chants. The whole thing was unbiased until the video got to Montreal. Old video of Vince saying no one screwed Bret other than Bret. Bret spit in Vince’s face. Vince says Bret didn’t leave on the best of terms. Vince says he didn’t screw Bret. Bret screwed Bret. In spite of Bret’s egomaniacal actions, he allowed Bret to come back to be inducted into the HOF. That weekend they didn’t speak one word. After Bret’s speech Vince put his hand out to Bret. Bret showed him nothing but utter contempt. Despite all of that and that he’s the better man who wouldn’t do anything for us. “What?” between each of his sentences. Next week the guest host of RAW will be… Vince then couldn’t say it. He tried again and still couldn’t do it. He said he couldn’t do it. “We want Bret!” chants. He’s sorry, Bret Hart will never be a guest host on RAW. Vince starts leaving and HBK’s music hits! He comes walking out looking pissed. HBK into the ring and Vince is slightly smirking. Vince hypes up HBK which gets him great pop. “HBK” chants. HBK says sometimes, no often, sometimes there’s rivalries that are bigger than this industry. So big you can’t deny the people or yourself because it doesn’t work for you. Vince says obviously he’s talking about Bret. HBK says he’s talking about Taker. He said it at the Slammy’s and will say it again. He wants to face Taker and knows he can break his streak. He’s here to appeal to Vince’s wallet. He wants to face Taker at WM. HBK says to make it happen. Vince says at the Chairman he can dictate policy, but not when it comes to Taker. He won’t make this match. If HBK wants it, HBK has to make it happen. Vince starts to leave. HBK stops him to add one more thing. He says he can understand Vince being afraid of Taker, but being afraid of Bret? Vince doesn’t have many open chapters in his life. Maybe he should bring closure to this one. Bring Bret back to the WWE! Bring Bret back to RAW! HBK says he promises him that if he does, only good things will happen. Vince says he’s not afraid of anyone! He’s fearless! Vince ask what was the phrase HBK used? HBK says only good things will happen. Vince repeats it and gets in HBK’s face. Vince smiles and nods. HBK says only good things will happen? HBK says that he for one will be more than happy to see Bret one more time. Vince says if only good things will happen, then the new year starts off with a special guest host, Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart! Vince leaves HBK standing in the ring.

Jeff Jarrett Talks About TNA Competing With WWE

TNA Founder Jeff Jarrett

TNA Founder Jeff Jarrett

A local newspaper in Johnstown, Pennsylvania recently conducted an interview with Jeff Jarrett to promote TNA’s live event in the city on January 14th.  Jarrett spoke at length about how TNA Wrestling can compete with World Wrestling Entertainment.  “They [WWE] are sports entertainment; we are professional wrestling,” Jarret said. “Our in-ring product takes priority over other facets of the business.” “The product that has drawn millions and millions of fans over the years, going back to the ’60s, is professional wrestling … (TNA) is fresh and modern, but it is in the essence of what has always been done.”

Jarrett knows what it takes to build a successful wrestling promotion and thinks TNA goes an extra step to make sure their fans are satisfied. “We recognize the fact that we’ve got to earn our fans one at a time,” Jarrett said. “I have been a part of wrestling my entire life, but I’ve never seen this kind of excitement generated by the backstage access, the autograph sessions, and the opportunities to get up close and personal with the TNA stars at the merchandise table.”

With TNA firing their “first shot” at WWE on January 4th with their first live 3-hour Monday night edition of TNA iMPACT!, Jarrett explains what’s ahead on TNA’s path to truly competing with WWE. “Things are getting bigger and better. With the addition of Hulk Hogan, skies are very blue for TNA. Are we going to come right out of the gate and beat them? Are we claiming that? Absolutely not,” he said. “But we’re in the game, and competition is good. We are very optimistic that by the end of 2010, it’ll be a different game.”

*Spoiler* RAW Guest Host For January 4th Revealed

WWE Hall of Famer Bret "The Hitman" Hart

WWE Hall of Famer Bret "The Hitman" Hart

Warning: The following contains a major *SPOILER* for the January 4th edition of WWE RAW:

It’s been rumored for several weeks that WWE Hall of Famer Bret Hart has signed a new short-term contract with World Wrestling Entertainment and will be returning as an on-air character in early 2010. There has been a great deal of speculation that Bret Hart will make his WWE return on the January 4th edition of WWE RAW, the night TNA Wrestling goes head-to-head with RAW for the first time ever.

Cable provider DirecTV has released its preview for the January 4th RAW and confirms that the Hitman will in fact be hosting RAW that night. Their preview reads:

“Shocking Guest Host Bret The Hitman Hart returns to confront Mr. McMahon.”

It’s also worth noting that the January 4th RAW is listed as a 2-hour show, contrary to speculation that WWE will add a 3rd hour to compete with TNA’s 1-hour lead-in.

Shane McMahon UFC Update, Bret Hart & DX Politics

– As noted earlier, sources in WWE are interested to see how the politics will be with Triple H once Bret Hart is back in the company. Many are curious to see how diplomatic Triple H will be with the whole situation. Most feel that given the recent changes in his life, Shawn Michaels will get along fine and wouldn’t be surprised if he gave Hart an apology.

– A former WWE employee was with Shane McMahon at a non-wrestling function over the weekend. The friend notes that Shane was beyond relaxed and relieved. Shane didn’t say anything negative about WWE but did seem glad that his travel schedule was over. Shane gave no indication of what’s next for him besides spending more time with his family. Apparently the meeting he had with UFC officials went well but it doesn’t look like anything further has came from it. While Shane is pretty aware of UFC, his interest in MMA must be blown out of proportion as he didn’t know of MMA promotion Strikeforce, where they stand of their recent moves.

JR Blog: His WWE Future, Mike Tyson, Independent Contractors

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog, which you can read in its entirety at JRsBarBQ.com. Some highlights:

His Future in Wrestling: “Have I called my last wrestling matches? Hell, no. Will I return to weekly TV for the long term? That’s not too likely. Short term, weekly TV work may be in the cards and in a few months I may have a different mindset…”

Mike Tyson hosting RAW: “Tyson would be a great guest on WWE 24/7’s Legends Roundtable if the subject matter was the WWWF from back in the day as Mike and I had many casual discussions about him watching WWWF religiously as a kid growing up in NYC. Tyson would be hard to beat in a WWWF trivia contest. Based on personal experience and being one on one with him, Mike Tyson is a different guy than the publics perception of him.”

Wrestlers being “Independent Contractors”: “I have read so much about the unionizing of pro wrestling, which will never happen by the way in my view, and improving the working conditions for all the talents of which I wholeheartedly endorse by the way … Yes, in a “perfect world” all performers working for any company being full time employees with the traditional benefits would be ideal but the thought that individuals who are independent contractors cannot create their own benefits and take advantage of independent contractor status is not accurate.”

Bret Hart’s WWE Contract & Storyline Plans With Vince-DX

WWE Hall of Famer Bret "The Hitman" Hart

WWE Hall of Famer Bret "The Hitman" Hart

The short-term deal that Bret Hart has signed with WWE is a performer’s contract, so he will be an integral part of the storylines heading into WrestleMania. It’s still believed by many that he will be wrestling one match, most likely against Vince McMahon at WrestleMania.

Bret is old-school and is trying to keep everything about his return quiet. Because of this, a lot of news might not get out about plans for him in WWE before his first appearance. It’s still not confirmed that Bret will be hosting the January 4th RAW. WWE has announced guest hosts for the weeks before and after that date and that’s the night TNA challenges WWE for the first time on Monday nights, but nothing is confirmed yet.

Bret is a bit heavier than he has been in the past and is trying to get back into ring shape. He has been suffering from an unknown back injury that has made it hard to train.

Bret hasn’t talked with Shawn Michaels or Triple H since Montreal so it will be interesting to see how everything plays out between them.

TNA Post-PPV Report, Bashir Gone, Steiner Injured

– After last night’s Final Resolution pay-per-view went off the air, AJ Styles celebrated the fans and stared Daniels down as he made his exit. Styles took the mic and asked the fans if they wanted wrestling and said that’s what they just got. Styles said when they go live on January 4th they are doing it for the fans and wished everyone a Merry Christmas.

— The departure of Sheik Abdul Bashir at the Final Resolution PPV was legit. Daivari said his goodbyes to the TNA crew earlier in the day. He had been with TNA since 2008 and recently signed a new contract, but has not been used on television in a meaningful way in a long time.

— Scott Steiner tweaked his knee during the Last Man Standing match with Bobby Lashley at Final Resolution. He got checked out a trainer backstage and is said to be doing okay.

*Spoilers* WWE SmackDown Tapings Results (12/25)

SmackDown *SPOILERS*

SmackDown *SPOILERS*

WWE SmackDown Tapings from Orlando, Florida
December 20th, 2009 – Report by Patrick Dirusso

Friday Night SmackDown

* Opens with Vickie Guerrero and Teddy Long in the kitchen. Vickie brags about her “delicious Christmas recipes” including potatoes and turkey. When her back is turned, Hornswoggle appears on the table and tages a huge bite out of her turkey.

* John Morrison, Matt Hardy, Finlay, and R-Truth vs. Dolph Ziggler, Drew McIntyre, CM Punk and Luke Gallows. Good match, lots of back and forth. All eight men were in the ring at the same time hitting their finishers. Morrisin hits Starship Pain on Ziggler for the pin.

* Rey Mysterio vs. Undertaker ended in DQ when Batista attacked Taker during the match, as Taker was about to deliver the chokeslam on Rey. Saw this one coming a mile away. Taker laid out Batista and then Rey hit Taker with the hurricanrana and Batista with 619. It was a mess.

* Cyime Tyme rolled Slam Master J, dressed as Santa, backstage. They stole his gift bag,  jacket, and went out and tossed the gifts to the fans at ringside.

* Cryme Tyme defeat two jobbers. They continued handing out presents and gifts to ringside fans.

* Mickie James and Maria defeated Beth Phoenix and Layla. Lots of heat for Layla and Michelle McCool who was doing commentary at ringside. After Mickey pinned Layla, she went to get her some of McCool. That led to a 3 on 2 attack which did not bode well for Mickie and Maria.

* Segment with Chris Jericho where he whines and complains about losing the tag belts to DX. He then questions why the Hart Dynasty is deserving of a title shot. Harts come down. Jericho backstrokes a little but again questions why they deserve tag title shot. DX interuppts them via the big screen.

DX say they have Christmas presents for Jericho and Hart Dynasty. For Jericho, they have a “Tickle Me Big Show” doll which farts when you press his stomach. They also have a one way ticket out of RAW. For the Hart Dynasty they have a 1 way ticket to Canada where there is snow, bears, hockey, more snow and more bears. Pretty typical DX stuff here.

Jericho then tells Hart Dynasty to make an impact because this is how DX plays their immature childish games. And then, the Hart Dynasty hit their finisher on Jericho.

* Another segment with Vickie and Teddy. Vickie apologizes for the previous Hornswoggle interruption. Vickie shows off her stuffing recipe which Teddy finds disgusting and asks how the Guerreros can eat that stuff. Hornswoggle appears again and throws a pie in both Vickie and Teddy’s face.

* DX beat The Hart Dynasty in the main event with a Pedigree. Before the match, Triple H gives his own rendition of “Twas the Night Before Christmas.” After the match, Hornswoggle appears and poses with DX as SmackDown goes off the air.

Dark Main Event:

* Undertaker pins Batista following a Tombstone.

Biggest Pops: Undertaker, DX, Rey Mysterio

Biggest Heat: Batista, Chris Jericho, CM Punk
