– With January 4th shaping up to be an eventful night, WWE’s top star will not be appearing on WWE RAW for the “Monday Night War.” WWE champion John Cena will miss the January 4th edition of Raw (from Ohio) because he’ll in Arizona for the Fiesta Bowl coin flip to promote Wrestlemania XXVI.
– On the TNA side, we can confirm that Team 3D’s Brother Ray and Brother Devon will be in Japan on January 4th as they’re booked to work that day’s New Japan Tokyo Dome event.
– In related news, there has been no talk of making the January 4th edition of RAW a three-hour broadcast yet. While many within WWE management have taken notice of TNA’s Monday Night iMPACT! special, Vince McMahon is said to be “no-selling” the move and is not giving the imprsesion that he feels threatened in the least.
— The most recent issue of WWE Magazine has an interview with the Bella Twins answering questions on psychic links between twins, “the creepy girls” from The Shining, one day battling each other for a WWE championship, and more. When asked how people can tell them apart, they replied with the following.
“I have two beauty marks on my chest, and our faces are shaped differently,” Brie told WWE Magazine. “We joke that I have more of a banana head, and Nikki has an apple head. She has the bigger booty, too, which she’s proud of.”
Nikki added, “Oh, heck yeah! I carry way more curves than Brie. And I usually have a flower in my hair. I love celebrating my Mexican-Italian heritage, and a flower makes me feel Spanish…and pretty!”
ESPN.com has published an extensive report on brain damage to pro athletes, especially pro wrestlers, with the big news that former WWE wrestler Andrew “Test” Martin had brain damage similar to Chris Benoit’s at the time of his death in March.
Studies conducted on Martin’s brain revealed that he suffered damage “stemming from repeated blows to the head.” Dr. Bennet Omalu, co-director of the Brain Injury Research Institute, told ESPN that they discovered “excessive amounts of tau proteins similar to those he found in Benoit.” Both Benoit and Martin are said to have had brains similar to “those of Alzheimer’s patients more than twice their age.”
Omalu explains, “After repeated blows to the head, at some point the brain loses the ability to heal itself. he tau impairs normal brain function and kills brain cells. The delicate balance of the neurotransmitters, which control moods and drives and maintains safety, can be destroyed. With Andrew Martin as the second case, the WWE and the sport in general have to ask themselves, ‘Is this a trend?’ The science tells us that jumping off 10-foot ladders and slamming people with tables and chairs is simply bad for the brain.”
WWE was contacted by ESPN and said the following regarding Dr. Omalu’s findings:
While this is a new emerging science, the WWE is unaware of the veracity of any of these tests, be it for Chris Benoit or Andrew Martin. Dr. Omalu claims that Mr. Benoit had a brain that resembled an 85-year-old with Alzheimer’s, which would lead one to ponder how Mr. Benoit would have found his way to an airport, let alone been able to remember all the moves and information that is required to perform in the ring. WWE has been asking to see the research and tests results in the case of Mr. Benoit for years and has not been supplied with them.
– TNA president Dixie Carter has updated her Twitter account with an announcement about a new TNA Wrestling ad campaign in New York City:
TNA’s 1st Times Square billboard goes up tomorrow in NYC. TNA package of goodies to the 1st person who tweets me a pic!

– WWE’s website has confirmed what was reported here yesterday, that hip hop recording artist and producer Timabland will host the final WWE RAW of 2009.
– During the pre-show before Tuesday night’s Dallas Mavericks NBA game, owner Mark Cuban talked about hosting WWE RAW this week and said he he loved every minute of it. Cuban enjoyed catching up with Vince McMahon and called WWE family, saying anytime they get together is fun. He said the energy at WWE RAW was like a Mavericks game, except he didn’t have to worry about his team winning. He also mentioned that the NBA told the Mavericks players they could attend RAW but were not allowed in the ring.
The December 7th edition of WWE RAW with Mark Cuban as the special guest host drew 3.2 cable rating. This is down from last week’s 3.6 and not a great sign headed into Sunday’s WWE’s Tables, Ladders and Chairs PPV,
The show did hours of 3.18 and 3.28.
By comparison, Monday Night Football on ESPN this week did a 9.7 rating.
WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog, which you can read in its entirety at JRsBarBQ.com. Some highlights:
HBK Retiring at WrestleMania: “We get emails all the time with fans assuming that WM26 will be HBK’s last Wrestlemania. I have not heard that confirmed whatsoever and if it is true wouldn’t one think that WWE would be preparing to make it a HUGE deal? In my mind’s eye, Wrestlemania season officially launches at the Royal Rumble. I am excited about the Match 2010 release of the next HBK DVD which is a countdown of Shawn’s Best Matches. Good luck in narrowing that list down to a three disc set.”
Ross on his own health: “It’s back to the doctor’s today for me as I will be seeing a Rheumatologist today which is a first. I had to go on line to find out what a Rheumatologist does in their world of specialty medicine. However, I’m feeling better every day and remain upbeat and optimistic that I have not called my last match and that my next one might be sooner than some expect.”
Mark Cuban: “Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban likely got cheered in the only major arena in America as the controversial, young billionaire is essentially one of the most vilified individuals in pro sports. Cuban is defiant, has been fined by NBA Commissioner David Stern many times and basically has been caught on TV court side acting like a tool. Nonetheless Cuban did a solid job on Raw and one could tell that the Mavs owner keeps up with the product or was tremendously prep.”
— Eric Bischoff, who is joining Hulk Hogan in partnering with TNA Wrestling, has posted a message on Twitter hyping the upcoming Monday Night iMPACT! special on January 4th with a little jab at WWE. – The Hollywood Reporteris reporting that several Hollywood names have joined the cast of WWE Films’ next project, Brothers Keeper, starring John Cena. THR writes:
Patricia Clarkson, Devon Graye, Madeleine Martin, Danny Glover and wrestling champ John Cena have been cast in “Brother’s Keeper,” a PG-rated family drama from WWE Films. Mel Damski (“Mischief”) will direct a screenplay by John Posey about a teenage boy (Graye) who tries to reunite his mother (Clarkson) and estranged older brother (Cena) 10 years after the death of their father, a state college wrestling legend. A brilliant student with no apparent athletic talents, the teenager decides to join the high school wrestling team as a way to pull the family together.
– Politico.com has an article up that paints former WWE CEO and United States Senate hopeful Linda McMahon in a very negative light. The article includes quotes from several former WWE employees, who say it would be downright wrong for McMahon to reach such a high position of power in the United States government. Here are some quotes:
Joanie “Chyna” Lauer: “If there is a race to Capitol Hill, I hope she gets knocked off before she even starts.”
Bruno Sammartino: “I would not vote for her because I know what she contributed to the wrestling world with her husband. The vulgarity, the nudity, the profanity, all that kind of crap — it bothers me.â€
Llarry Zbyszko: “If the people in Connecticut are stupid enough to elect Linda, that’s their problem.”
Superstar Billy Graham: “This campaign is the height of hypocrisy. I believe the voters and citizens in Connecticut deserve to be told the truth. In no way does she have a rightful place in the U.S. Senate. The fact that we were out there experiencing trauma and drawing in untold millions for the company [means] we should have at least had some sort of health insurance.â€
The Blue Meanie: “We’re the guys out there sacrificing ourselves. You’d think they’d throw us a bone. Sometimes you wondered if they saw their employees as humans or farm animals It was like being in the circus. You’re shipped here, perform there; it’s almost like you’re disposable.—
WWE’s lack of health insurance is at the heart of the wrestlers’ grievances. They allege that McMahon and her husband, WWE Chairman Vince McMahon, ran a billion-dollar company that provided no health insurance for the wrestlers who put their bodies on the line to help turn the WWE into an international phenomenon.
– Charlie Haas reportedly asked WWE for his release within the last few months. Apparently officials were going to grant him the release at first but changed their minds and gave him a raise instead. There was a rumor going around that Kurt Angle had a spot for Haas in TNA so WWE kept Haas around instead of having him jump to TNA.

In an interview with political website TheHill.com, former WWE CEO and United States Senate hopeful Linda McMahon spoke about a number of topics pertaining to pro wrestling. McMahon acknowledged that steroids were a “significant problem” in WWE back in 2006 before the company relaunched its drug testing program. She says WWE’s Wellness policy is “as good as it can be for today. But as technology advances and more is known and developed, we’ll continue to develop our policy, as we have done over the years.â€
“Unlike football or baseball or basketball, where steroids can actually enhance performance, they do nothing to enhance performance in WWE,†McMahon said. She added that its mostly about a wrestler’s “charisma, the ability to connect with the audience, and how successfully they can act and perform within the storyline.†No mention about the long standing culture of freakishly muscular wrestlers getting pushed or the increasing pressure for wrestlers to stay in shape and maintain an HDTV-friendly physiques.
WWE legends Superstar Billy Graham and Bruno Sammartino have been very outspoken towards Linda McMahon since she began her Senate campaign. Graham recently told the Hartford Courant, “She may look like a Sunday school teacher, [but her] hands are as bloody as her husband’s, because she is aware of every move in the ring.†Linda called Graham a “self-confessed liar†and dismissed Sammartino as someone who has “still got sour grapes because he didn’t make as much money as the guys today are making.” She said, “You’re going to always have the old-timers who are going to come out and say [things],†she said. “It’s just not like that.â€

Orton protege Cody Rhodes spoke to the Dallas Morning News and issued a challenge against Cuban. Early reviews are coming in for the latest WWE Studios release, “The Marine 2,” starring WWE Raw superstar Ted DiBiase and the reviews are surprisingly positive. IGN.com gave a surprisingly favorable review (6/10) saying:
While we wouldn’t expect Shakespeare any time soon, Ted DiBiase obviously has sufficient acting chops to carry the film. That said, the wrestler-turned-action star lacks the kind of distinct and intimidating visual presence of somebody like Cena. In truth, for as tough and capable as the man appears, there’s something all too vanilla about DiBiase. He looks like a normal, Mid-Western good-old-boy in prime physical condition, more likely to hold open the door for the lady at the market than single-handedly assassinate a group of highly trained killers. Regardless, his athletic skills are hardly in question as he does so with a good deal of command.
Overall, The Marine 2 isn’t exactly a great film – honestly, it’s barely a good film – but it’s significantly better and more creatively crafted than anything we’ve seen hit direct-to-video shelves in quite some time. If you liked the original or if you’re just a WWE fan looking for a fun, action-packed night at home, you’d do well to check this out.
WWE has released ome new financial information that includes PPV buyrate estimates for three of the company’s new gimmick-concept events.
– WWE Breaking Point drew under 200,000 buys, making it the least successful event of 2009. The submission-themed show featured The Undertaker’s first WWE match since WrestleMania. By comparison, the event that Breaking Point replaced (WWE Unforgiven) drew close to 225,000 buys last year. WWE recently released its PPV schedule for 2010 and WWE Breaking Point was not part of the schedule, so this event may be a one time affiar.
– WWE Hell in A Cell, which featured three Hell in a Cell cage matches, drew around 300,000 buys, way up from the 261,000 buys that No Mercy 2008 drew.
– WWE Bragging Rights, which featured a Raw vs. SmackDown theme, drew approximately 200,000 buys. This is a big improvement over the event it replaced (Cyber Sunday,) which drew 153,000 buys in 2008.

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross updated his blog, which you can (and should) read in its entirety at JRsBarBQ.com. Some highlights:
Responding to a jackass fan who questioned him for not being at Monday’s Raw: “He essentially accused me of having no passion for the product and basically backing up to the pay window as a reason for not driving the 5-6 hour round trip from Norman to Dallas to hang around the locker room area and ‘see the boys.’ I forgot to let ‘Logan’ know that I have a doctor’s appointment with a specialist on Monday that I was lucky to be able to be able to secure. Yes, Logan, I too, wish that I did not have any health issues to deal with and that I could make the trip to Dallas to hang out. But my health issues will be behind me soon enough I assure one and all but for now they are what they are. Oh, yeah…I’m feeling better every day.”
Jesse Ventura: “Logan also said he spend 5, whole minutes with Jesse Ventura once upon a time and that Ventura told thim that ‘Jim Ross was selfish and only cared about himself.’ That must be accurate because it was uttered by the former Governor of Minnesota who’s NEVER been known to embellish a story or ‘break his arm patting himself on the back’ as Gorilla Monsoon often said about Jesse. For the record, in the politically volatile world of pro wrestling if one doesn’t look out for one’s self then one can easily be taken advantage of and kicked to the curb for a variety of reasons or for no reasons. So, perhaps at the end of the day many of the ‘survivors’ within pro wrestling have to be a little selfish to make it long term. I am indeed a survivor.”
TNA’s broadcast team: “Finally, it was also suggested that if I hated travel so much that I go to work for TNA because of their reduced schedule. Best I can tell TNA either produces TV or they do voice overs every week Plus, and more importantly, TNA has an announce team that I happen to feel are very competent. I appreciate everyone’s career advise but I think I can handle this one not to mention that no one knows what’s going to happen at the end of the day.”
— Earlier this week, WWE Hall of Famer Jesse Ventura appeared on ESPN radio and criticized World Wrestling Entertainment for their longtime company policy of classifying wrestlers as “independent contractors” and not employees. Ventura acknowledged that he had participated in a WWE event just a week ago when he hosted Raw, but says the wrestlers are treated unfairly and denied benefits because of WWE’s refusal to acknowledge them as employees.
WWE spokesperson Robert Mitchell has responded to Ventura’s remarks with some pretty sharp words of his own. Mitchell tells the Hartford Courant: “We find it highly hypocritical that Jesse had no problem coming on Monday Night Raw last week to promote his new project or was happy to be paid all those years by the WWE as a performer. He is just looking to garner additional press for his fledgling show, appropriately entitled ‘Conspiracy Theory.'”
— It’s been reported this week that major changes are coming to WWE in the early months of 2010, with the ECW brand likely being shut down. According to a report on PWInsider.com, WWE also has big changes in store for the SmackDown brand. The feeling is that Raw has enhanced its identity with the Guest Host concept and SmackDown needs something of its own to stand out. While nothing official has been decided on yet, it’s believed that any big changes will take place after year ends.
– This week’s edition of WWE Raw hosted by actor Verne Troyer drew a 3.2 cable rating, down from last week’s 3.4. The show did hours of 3.28 and 3.08, continuing the disturbing trend of viewers tuning out as the show progresses. Raw was up against stiff competition this week from Monday Night Football on ESPN, which drew a big 13.8 rating – the second highest rated Monday Night Football game on ESPN.
– The Ultimate Warrior vs. WWE lawsuit was officially closed on 11/19.
– Former WWE ring announcer Lauren Mayhew has signed with Don Buchwald and Associates, the same talent agency that represents WWE Hall of Famer Steve Austin.
Former WWE superstar Jeff Hardy was set to appear in court this morning for a probable cause hearing to determine whether there is enough evidence stemming from his September 11th drug arrest to see if the case would proceed to a grand jury. The grand jury would then decide whether to prosecute Hardy for the various felonies she’s been charged with.
The hearing has been rescheduled once again and the next court appearance for Hardy will be on January 27, 2010.
The original probable cause hearing on November 4th was rescheduled to today because certain drug test results had not been completed in time. No word yet on why today’s hearing did not take place.
WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog, which you can read in it entirety at JRsBarBQ.com. Some highlights:
Monday’s WWE Raw: “I felt the show needed more bell to bell wrestling. Only two bouts in the two hours stayed with me….Kofi vs. Orton and HHH vs. Jericho. Good to see that Kofi is remaining relevant. Kingston’s growth continues. I don’t get too wrapped up in wins and losses.”
Sheamus’ Push:“Sheamus did not lose any of his ‘steam.’ That was a positive. Too much negative is being made of Sheamus vs. Cena at the TLC PPV. WWE has to try and elevate new talents and Sheamus is getting a shot. He’s a tough guy who works hard. Why shouldn’t Sheamus be given a shot before he’s condemned? Let’s see how his match goes with Cena on PPV before all the ‘internet experts’ anoint this pairing as a failure.
“The theory is to get new bodies in the main event mix. It seems like it is damned if one does and damned if one doesn’t these days with who gets the nudge to the upper regions of the cards. That just too much negativity. That’s exactly why I delete so many emails as they are either overtly negative from start to finish thus depressing to read or they are way too long.

The ECW brand will be put to rest once and for all in the near future.
According to a reliable source, WWE officials have had several meetings with the Syfy network about re-branding WWE’s Tuesday night show. Both sides are in agreement that WWE’s version of ECW has been a bust and plans are already being made for a new weekly series. While several ideas have been tossed around (including a magazine-style recap show), right now the most likely option is that WWE will drop the ECW letters and “identity” (whatever that is) and create a new brand that will feature young and-and-coming stars. The Tuesday night timeslot will likely stay the same.
WWE relaunched the ECW brand back in 2006 after the undeniable success of the “Rise and Fall of ECW” DVD set and later the ECW One Night Stand Pay-Per-View events. After ECW was relaunched as a brand, it quickly became apparent that WWE had no intention of keeping the elements that made the original ECW special and turned ECW into a watered-down, generic “C” show. The first week of ECW on Syfy back in 2006 drew around a 2.8. These days a 1.1 is considered a good week.
While it may be bittersweet to see the ECW letters go, ECW has been dead for a long time and a brand featuring primarily young stars sounds like it has potential.
Stay tuned for the latest.

In an interview to promote his new book, Rey Mysterio tells U.K.’s Daily Star that he checked himself into rehab last year after becoming dependent on prescription pain pills.
“I’ve been wrestling for 20 years now, and after several operations, five on my left knee and three on my right arm, the medication caught up to me,” Mysterio told the Star’s Patrick Lennon. “I realized it, my wife realized it, and I knew it was time to make a change for myself, my family, and for the business I’m in.”
Mysterio says he was tired of living the lifestyle of an addict and implied that he did not want to let addiction lead him down the same path as his dear friend, the late Eddie Guererro.
“When you realize you’re in the right moment – that you haven’t lost your family, or lost your job it’s a good thing, and with the support and help of my wife and kids, I’ve moved on to something better,” Mysterio said.
– TMZ cameras caught up with Hulk Hogan and girlfriend Jennifer McDaniel at Los Angeles’ LAX airport on Monday. Hogan pointed out the huge diamond ring on McDaniel’s hand and said she very well “could be the new Mrs. Hogan.” Check it out:
– Search engines Google and Yahoo! have released their list of the top searches of 2009. The “Top 5” searches were the same on both sites, with “WWE” claiming the number 3 spots. Here are the Top 5:
1. Michael Jackson
2. Twilight
3. WWE
4. Megan Fox
5. Britney Spears
– Talk show host Chelsea Handler completely wrecked Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake on her “Chelsea Lately” E! Network show on Monday night. After showing a picture of herself with Hulk Hogan from the first class lounge at an Australian airport, Handler ranted about how “f***ing disgusting” Brutus Beefcake was, calling him the grossest person she’s ever seen. She said Beefcake was running around yelling about how drunk he was. One of the other guests on the Handler show mentioned how “gay” the name “Brutus Beefcake” sounds. Overall, a scathing segment.
Thanks to reader Greg Harlow for sending in these live notes from last night’s WWE Raw from Baltimore, MD:
Live Notes: The arena was around 80% full and the crowd was hot all night. Lots of DX glowsticks in the crowd.
Dark Match: Chris Masters defeated Chavo Guerrero with the Masterlock. Masters did his “boob dance” during his entrance.
Superstars Match (SPOILER): Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase defeated Evan Bourne and Primo. Legacy dominated pretty much all of the match. Bourne was double-teamed and picked apart before making the hot tag to Primo. Primo suffered the Cross Rhodes and was pinned.
After RAW: Big Show attacked DX from behind on the ramp. Jericho, Big Show and Randy Orton beat down DX until John Cena made the save. Jericho and Big Show were thrown out of the ring, leaving Randy Orton alone with DX and Cena. Orton tried to make a truce but got hit with DX and Cena’s finishers to end the show.
– Jeff Hardy will be in court once again this Wednesday for a probable cause hearing stemming from his September 11th arrest that resulted in him being charged with multiple drug-related felonies. If the court decides that Hardy committed the crimes he has been charged with then his case goes to a Grand Jury, where they decide whether or not to criminally indict Hardy. – Jesse Ventura appeared on CNN’s Larry King Live on Monday along with Arianna Huffington and Ben Stein to discuss the United States’ expected troop escalation in Afghanistan and how to pay for it. Video of the appearance can be viewed at HuffingtonPost.com.
– We reported over the weekend that WWE rented out a courthouse in Baltimore to film a segment on Monday afternoon where Hornswoggle takes DX to “little people’s court.” For creative reasons, WWE decided to air the skits during next week’s Raw from Dallas, Texas. That show will be hosted by businessman Marc Cuban.
