Buddy Murphy is no longer at the top of WWE’s cruiserweight division as he was unsuccessful in his latest title defense. Tony Nese captured the WWE Cruiserweight Title when he beat Murphy at WrestleMania 35.
An eight-man single elimination tournament with the winner facing Murphy for the strap at this event started back in February. Nese and Cedric Alexander then advanced to the finals, which was won by Nese. Thus, the way that Nese earned this title match.
Murphy has held the title since he was able to beat Cedric Alexander to win the title at WWE Super Show-Down pay-per-view event at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in Melbourne, Australia. As a result of this win, it marked the first reign as WWE Cruiserweight Champion for Murphy and his first title win on the main roster.
Time will tell whether WWE continues this feud or goes into a different direction heading into the next pay-per-view event, Money in the Bank, that goes down on May 19th in Hartford, Connecticut at the XL Center.
