WrestleMania XXVII Results: 4/3/2011
From the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia
Solomonster here, thanks for joining us tonight. Keri Hilson out to perform America the Beautiful.
Rock is out to a monster reaction for a promo to start the show. He promised to electrify and didn’t really have much else to say, other than getting the crowd to chant “WrestleMania” and”Yabba Dabba” along with him. He said his catchphrase and left. Fade to the usual intro video.
We’re starting with the World Heavyweight Title on the line! First time in Mania history.
World Heavyweight Championship Match
– Edge (c) vs. Alberto Del Rio
Story of the match was Del Rio working over the arm of Edge to set him up for the cross arm bar. Edge got out of it and fought through interference by Brodus Clay to deliver a spear for the clean pin and retain the World title in 11:45. After the match, Edge and Christian took a lead pipe and a tire iron to Del Rio’s $100,000 Rolls Royce on the stage. Del Rio cried to end the segment. Not exactly made to look strong here.
By the way, Michael Cole is in the Cole Mine announcing with Jerry Lawler and Josh Mathews.
Rey Mysterio vs. Cody Rhodes
Mysterio is out wearing a pretty neat Captain America costume. Good back and forth match that featured a great spot where Rhodes delivered a delayed vertical suplex on the second turnbuckle to Rey. Cody ripped off Mysterio’s kneebrace and Rey ripped off Cody’s mask during he match. Later on, Cody nailed Mysterio with the kneebrace on a dive through the ropes and brought him back inside to deliver Crossroads for the pin in 11:38. Huge win for Cody who got lots of chants during the match as well.
Backstage segment with Teddy Long and Snoop Dog looking for talent to join him on his upcoming tour. William Regal rapped (if you can call it rap), Great Khali and Beth Phoenix sang a song from Grease, Roddy Piper clocked Zach Ryder with a coconut from behind, and Hornswoggle spoke for the first time on TV, rapping with the Bella Twins. Total comedy.
8-Man Tag Team Match:
Wade Barrett, Justin Gabriel, Heath Slater and Ezekiel Jackson vs. Santino Marella, Kofi Kingston, Big Show and Kane
This was a colossal waste of a match. Kofi took out some members of The Corre with a cross body block on the outside, Santino delivered the Cobra and Big Show knocked out Heath Slater with a punch for the pin in just 1:27.
Backstage segment with The Rock and Eve (you know, the Divas champion who doesn’t have a match on the show). This leads to an appearance by Mae Young where she smacks the Rock’s ass on the way out. Rock then turns around and comes face to face with Stone Cold Steve Austin. They exchange pleasantries and really drive home how much I wish we could get another Mania match between these two.
Randy Orton vs. CM Punk
Story here was Punk working over Orton’s injured leg. Once Orton regained the advantage, he went for the punt but collapsed in a heap, feigning a leg injury. When Punk sauntered over, Orton went for the RKO but Punk was smart enough to slither out to the apron. He then went for his springboard clothesline, but this time Orton caught him in mid-air with an RKO and got the pin in 14:53.
Backstage now with Gene Okerlund and The Rock. Some more comedy here that ends with Rock confronting Pee Wee Herman, who he inducts into Team Bring It. That’s enough of a reason to leave Team Bring It as far as I’m concerned.
Special Guest Referee: “Stone Cold” Steve Austin
– Jerry Lawler vs. Michael Cole with Jack Swagger
Jim Ross and Booker T are out to call the next match with Josh Mathews. After some stalling inside the Cole Mine, Lawler went after him and got him in the ring. Jack Swagger attacked King on the outside and put him in the ring. From there, the match just dragged and dragged as Cole beat up Lawler. At one point, there was a loud boring chant. When Lawler started making his comeback, Swagger threw in the towel, but Austin would have none of it. Swagger came into the ring and ate a Stunner from Austin. Lawler then proceeded to beat up Cole, executing a fistdrop from the second rope and ending with an anklelock for the submission victory in 14:21. Austin shared some beers with Lawler after the match and Booker T even ran in to do a Spinaroonie and participate in the beer bash. Austin then nailed him with a stunner to a big pop. The anonymous Raw GM then chimed in and Josh Mathews announced that because the referee overstepped his bounds, he was reversing the decision and awarding the DQ win to Cole. Lawler threw Mathews into the ring where Austin delivered yet another Stunner. The most hilarious part about all of this was the fact that every other word out of Austin’s mouth was the f-word. I mean, it was totally absurd.
Time for THE STREAK.
No Holds Barred Match With “The Streak” On The Line
The Undertaker vs. Triple H
Triple H is out first to Metallica’s “For Whom The Bell Tolls” before seguing into his usual theme music. Undertaker out to Johnny Cash. Didn’t take long to spill out to the floor. They destroyed the Cole Mine. Triple H went for a Pedigree thru the announce table, but Undertaker backdropped him to the floor and it looks like that sucked for Hunter. Undertaker gets back in the ring and oh no, please tell me he’s not going for the dive. BUT HE DOES and Taker wipes out Hunter on the floor with a HUGE cross body block over the top to the floor. Undertaker recovers, thank god, and positions the steel steps by the spanish announce table and tries for a tombstone on the steps, but Hunter slips out to the floor. Undertaker gets a running start and charges toward Triple H, but Hunter catches him for a spinebuster through the table! These guys are killing each other out there. Each man hit his finisher a bunch of times, only for the other man to kick out for several near falls. This includes Triple H hitting three Pedigrees, but Taker kicked out each time. Triple H is shouting for him to stay down now as he lays in repeated chairshots to the back. Triple H now hoists Undertaker up for a Tombstone and nails it for the best near fall of the match. A desperate Triple H retrieves a sledgehammer from underneath the ring and goes to use it, but Undertaker catches him in the Hells Gate submission and Hunter has no place to go. After valiantly fighting, Triple H is forced to tap out for the submission in 29:30 of a FANTASTIC match. Just great stuff.
Both men exit the ring gingerly, but Undertaker just collapses on the ground outside the ring after the match. He looks like death. They drive a forklift-looking vehicle to the ring, agents are out including Dean Malenko and Mike Rotunda and they help lift Undertaker onto the vehicle as they drive him out and fade to black.
Good luck following that match.
6-Person Mixed Tag Team Match
Trish Stratus, Snooki & John Morrison vs. LayCool & Dolph Ziggler
Thankfully, this was kept short. Snooki did the old Chyna cartwheel into an elbow spot in the corner on McCool, then did another cartwheel into a standing splash for the pin in 3:08.
They announced a new all-time GeorgiaDome attendance record of 71,617.
WWE Championship Match
– The Miz (c) vs. John Cena
Great promo packages for each man. Cena had this big, elaborate entrance with a live church choir singing and they were promptly booed once they were done singing. Cena is now wearing a new red shirt, thus reinforcing the Fruity Pebble stereotype. Match starts and has shockingly little heat. Part of it I think is the acoustics of a dome show, but the crowd is just not into this match. They had a great near fall where Miz accidentally hit Alex Riley with his briefcase and Cena gave Miz an awesome Attitude Adjustment, but only scored a two count. They fought to the outside and both men spilled over the barrier into the crowd where they were counted out for a draw in 14:30.
At this point, Rock came out and the GM chimed in again. Rock went to read the announcement, but trashed the laptop instead and said there’s no way WrestleMania is ending this way. He restarted the match as a no DQ, no count out affair. Cena immediately brought Miz into the ring and went for an Attitude Adjustment, but Miz slipped out and Rock snuck up from behind Cena, giving him a Rockbottom. Miz then crawled on top of Cena and scored the pinfall to retain the WWE Title (for the second time tonight). After staring down Miz a bit, Rock got into the ring and beat up Miz, giving him a spinebuster and a People’s Elbow to end the show.
Thanks for joining us!
