WWE Monday Night Raw Reaction 6/6/2016

This week’s Monday Night Raw kicked off with all 6 competitors of the upcoming Money in the Bank ladder match on ladders in the middle of the ring. Chris Jericho was sitting cross-legged on top of the ladder and the crowd responded with chanting “stupid idiot!” loudly at him. The six superstars insults for a few minutes before Teddy Long’s music hit. Teddy came out dancing and proceeded to say that he wanted to be in charge of Smackdown when it goes live July 19th. Stephanie McMahon came out and told Teddy Long to leave the arena. Stephanie then stated Cesaro would be facing off with Chris Jericho to kick off the show.

Reaction: This was a weird way to open the show. Teddy Long had a rough time with the few lines he had and Stephanie McMahon pretty much destroyed him. I wonder if we will see all the former GMs showing up over the next few weeks trying to get a job. Maybe Vickie Guerrero will make her triumphant return? Who could forget what happened to her the last time she was on Raw? I’ve tried to forget, it is just impossible.

Chris Jericho vs Cesaro

This entire match was back and forth with Cesaro getting the victory after he counted the Walls of Jericho. Cesaro managed to roll through and wound up getting Jericho in the Cesaro Swing for 15 rotations. The match concluded with Chris Jericho tapping out to the Sharpshooter.

Reaction: With this impressive win by Cesaro, his momentum continues. Thursday night on Smackdown, Cesaro celebrated on top of the ladder while grabbing the Money in the Bank briefcase that was hanging above the ring. Cesaro is certainly one of the favorites to come out on top at WWE Money in the Bank in a couple of weeks.

The WWE aired a terrific video package hyping up the Rollins vs Reigns match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. They showed footage of Rollins as a child pretending to be a WWE Superstar and the difficulties he had recovering from his injury. The main being that he was devastated that he had to miss this year’s Wrestlemania. Seth Rollins referred to Roman Reigns as “not a real champion” and as a “placeholder”.

Reaction: This got me hyped for their match at Money in the Bank much more than that 10 minute game of chicken Rollins played with Roman Reigns last week on Raw.

Rusev vs Jack Swagger w/ Titus O’neil on Commentary

This was a pretty quick match that ended with Rusev shoving Jack Swagger into Titus O’Neil and rolling back into the ring to get the win via count out. After the match, Jack Swagger and Titus O’Neil attacked Rusev, who was able to roll out of the ring after getting kicked in the head by Titus. Swagger and O’Neil celebrated in the ring as Rusev retreated.

Reaction: We’ve all seen the Rusev vs Jack Swagger match enough by now. Thursday on Smackdown the two had a great match, however this one was short and it’s sole purpose was to further the Titus/ Rusev feud.

John Cena came out to the ring and commented on the energy of the crowd last week on Raw. Last week, the crowd had dueling chants of  “Let’s go Cena!”, “AJ Styles!” for over two minutes. John Cena claimed that he had only felt that energy from the crowd with one other person, that person being the Rock. AJ Styles comes out along with the Club and the same chant happens again. This promo culminated with AJ Styles and the Club surrounding John Cena, ready to attack him. The New Day came out and made the save and Styles & the Club retreated.

Reaction: This was a terrific promo with a lot of nods to smart fans and the folks that cannot stand John Cena. AJ Styles at one point claimed that guys that lose to Cena wind up getting “buried” in the WWE. To be honest, I was one of those people that found Cena unbearable for the longest time. However, the show is clearly much better when Cena is on it. The AJ Styles/John Cena feud should be one that lasts well after Money in the Bank.

Enzo & Cass vs the Vaudevillians

This was yet another quick match that ended with Aiden English and Enzo Amore recreating the spot in which Enzo got a concussion. After seeing this, Big Cass lost his mind and beat the Vaudevillians to a pulp and got disqualified.

Reaction: The WWE is trying to build up Big Cass, my hope is that they don’t sacrifice the Enzo & Cass tag team in the process.

Backstage, Teddy Long appeared dancing next to Stephanie McMahon. Teddy suggests a fatal four way tag team match for Money in the Bank. Stephanie once again kicked Teddy Long out of the building and then called WWE marketing. Stephanie then suggested the same match that Teddy Long just mentioned and claimed it was her own idea. Thus, at Money in the Bank it will be Enzo & Cass, the Vaudevillians, Anderson & Gallows and the New Day for the WWE Tag Team Championship.

Sami Zayn vs Alberto Del Rio

This was a solid match that ended in surprising fashion. Del Rio picked up a clean victory over Sami Zayn.

Reaction: This one surprised me, as I thought for sure Sami Zayn would get the victory. This may be the WWE simply building Del Rio up to get the audience to believe he has a chance at winning the Money in the Bank ladder match once again. The WWE also seems to be making a concerted effort to make Sami Zayn appear to be an underdog. There is no doubt that Sami Zayn losing to Del Rio will annoy people, however all may be forgotten if he is the one that emerges victorious in a couple of weeks.

A Roman Reigns video package is aired that was just as good as the Seth Rollins vignette that aired earlier in the broadcast. Whomever is making these videos for the WWE deserves a raise.

Dean Ambrose vs Kevin Owens

This was a back and forth match, where the momentum seemed to change when Ambrose dove outside of the ring and Kevin Owens caught him. Owens then hit a Frog Splash on Dean Ambrose who was laying outside the ring. However, as soon as Kevin Owens got Ambrose back in the ring, Ambrose surprised him with a Dirty Deeds out of nowhere for the victory. After the match, Dean Ambrose set up the ladder in the middle of the ring and went to grab the briefcase hanging above the ring. Kevin Owens prevented Ambrose and then pointed out the briefcase while shouting that it belonged to him.

Reaction: This was a great match that further hints at the notion that absolutely any of the six WWE Superstars in the Money in the Bank ladder match can win it. My prediction for that match is that I have absolutely no idea what is going to happen and I cannot wait to see it.

Another awkward Darren Young and Bob Backlund promo was shown.

Reaction: It was awkward.

Charlotte and Dana Brooke came down to the ring. Charlotte apologized to her father but said that everything she said was true. Natalya and Becky Lynch interrupted Charlotte and tried to convince Dana Brooke that Charlotte was a master manipulator. Dana Brooke seemed to agree and began to walk away from Charlotte only to attack Becky Lynch and Natalya. Charlotte and Natalya celebrated in the ring after beating down both Becky Lynch and Natalya.

Another Shining Stars promo was shown with the Shining Stars standing in front of green screen pretending that they are in Puerto Rico.

Reaction: It was awkward.

Breezango vs Golden Truth

Tyler Breeze was wrestling R-Truth but both Fandango and Goldust wound up getting involved. Once again, Teddy Long came out and made it a tag team match. Fortunately, Teddy Long was escorted backstage by security and the match never happened. Backstage, Stephanie McMahon for the third time told Teddy Long to get out of the building. Stephanie McMahon also claimed that it would be her that would be appointed the General Manager for Smackdown when it goes live July 19th.

Reaction: Thank goodness Breezango vs the Golden Truth didn’t happen again. As for Teddy Long, it was funny the first time he showed up on Raw, the other two times not so much. If Stephanie McMahon is indeed the GM of Smackdown, it will be interesting to see if Triple H joins her and the Authority is reborn. An even more interesting scenario is that if Triple H is somehow placed on whatever show Shane McMahon is running and the power struggle that would generate.

The Club w/ AJ Styles vs the New Day

Before this match even started, it descended into madness. The Club and the New Day were brawling all over the place which led to AJ Styles hitting the Styles Clash on Xavier Woods outside the ring. Xavier Woods was sent back to the locker room so it is became a 3 on 2 match. The New Day had the momentum until Styles and Gallows took out Big E outside the ring. Styles, Gallows and Anderson proceeded to take turns beating down Big E as he was stuck in their corner. Eventually Big E was able to tag in Kofi Kingston but the numbers game was too much to overcome. AJ Styles hit the Phenomenal Forearm on Kingston for the victory. After the match, Styles and the Club were beating down what remained of the New Day but John Cena came out and made the save. AJ Styles rolled out of the ring to avoid Cena, only to attack him from behind while he was distracted by Anderson and Gallows. However, Kofi Kingston fought off Styles and the show ended with John Cena hitting an Attitude Adjustment on Gallows.

Reaction: AJ Styles versus John Cena in my opinion is the most interesting thing going on in the WWE right now. It was interesting that both Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns were not on the show aside from the video packages mentioned earlier. Rollins versus Reigns will most certainly be the main event of Money in the Bank, however I think the ladder match and the Styles/Cena match have considerably more buzz surrounding them at the moment.
