WWE Smackdown Reaction 6/2/2016

This week’s Smackdown started off with the New Day addressing the Club’s attack on them on Monday Night Raw. Just as the New Day began to dance in the ring, the Club interrupted them. The Club claimed that sometime very soon, they will take the Tag Team titles off of the New Day. AJ Styles joined the Club and bragged about what he did to John Cena on Raw. The Club and the New Day proceeded to trade insults, with a highlight being Kofi Kingston poking fun at the fact that it took AJ Styles 10 years to make it to the WWE. The main event is set for the AJ Styles versus Kofi Kingston.

Reaction: Corny jokes aside, the Club is finally interesting in the WWE. Their previous feud with the Usos was rather boring and it is nice to see an interesting heel stable in the WWE that isn’t the Authority. The Club versus the New Day has the chance to be something special and be a feud that lasts for several months.

Charlotte vs Becky Lynch

Becky Lynch had the upper-hand early in this match, but Dana Brooke distracted Lynch for a second and Charlotte hit her with a big boot and knocked her outside of the ring. The match ended with Becky Lynch getting the win because Dana Brooke got involved in the match and Charlotte was disqualified. After the match, Natalya comes down and attacks Charlotte and Dana Brooke. Becky Lynch joins in on the attack. Becky Lynch and Natalya stand tall in the ring as Charlotte and Dana Brooke retreat.

Reaction: This was a good back and forth match that ended the way that every Charlotte match that isn’t on a PPV seems to end. It seems like this is heading towards a title shot for Becky Lynch in the near future. It is only a matter of time before Charlotte’s antics fall short and she loses her title.

Kevin Owens and Alberto Del Rio confront Sami Zayn & Dean Ambrose backstage. It is revealed that there will be a tag team match between these four Superstars later in the evening. This was an entertaining promo ending with Kevin Owens randomly telling Renee Young that he doesn’t like her necklace.

The Golden Truth vs The Dudley Boys

First things first, Breezango were taking in this match ringside in pink and purple chairs while enjoying some fancy beverages. This was a short match with Tyler Breeze distracting the Golden Truth allowing the Dudley Boyz to get the victory. After the match, Breezango insulted the Golden Truth because they never seem to win a match.

Reaction: The Golden Truth is directed towards a younger audience, and the introduction of a bouncing Goldust head over the lyrics to the R-Truth rap during their entrance is clearly evidence of that. The same goes for Breezango, as Fandango referred to basketball as “shooty hoops” during their promo immediately following the match. While I don’t enjoy these segments, someone else must be and they are usually short enough that they aren’t unbearable.

Dean Ambrose & Sami Zayn vs Kevin Owens & Alberto Del Rio

This match started off with Kevin Owens immediately attacking Sami Zayn. Things changed rather quickly as Zayn hit a Hurricanrana on Owens which caused Del Rio to tag himself in. That didn’t change the momentum at all as Zayn and Ambrose were beating down Del Rio for a couple of minutes. However, Del Rio hit a Backstabber on Zayn out of nowhere and that gave the momentum back to Owens and Del Rio. Sami Zayn was trapped in the corner as Del Rio and Owens were taking turns punching him in the face. This match went back and forth until Del Rio accidentally kicked Kevin Owens, which then allowed Sami Zayn to hit the Helluva kick on Del Rio for the victory. After the match, Kevin Owens grabbed a headset at the announcer’s table and said that he was sick of his tag team partners costing him matches. He then went on to say that he is going to show everybody what is going to happen at Money in the Bank in two weeks. Owens grabbed a ladder from under the ring and set it up in the middle of the ring. As he was about to climb it and grab the Money in the Bank briefcase hanging above the ring, Cesaro’s music hit. Cesaro ran down to the ring and hit a huge Springboard European Uppercut on Kevin Owens. Cesaro then climbed the ladder and grabbed the briefcase to a thunderous reaction from the crowd. Ambrose and Zayn looked on from the entrance ramp as Kevin Owens threw a tantrum outside the ring.

Reaction: What a great match to hype the Money in the Bank ladder match. This is a much more entertaining way to get the WWE Universe invested a big match than what the WWE is currently doing with the Rollins/Reigns feud.

Rusev vs Jack Swagger

Rusev attacked Swagger before the match and injured his shoulder. It was looking like this was going to be a quick match, but that was not the case whatsoever. Jack Swagger fought off Rusev time and time again and even locked in the Patriot Lock. Unfortunately for Swagger, the pre-match assault by Rusev was too much to overcome as he was forced to submit to the Accolade. Rusev would not break the hold on Swagger even after the referee called for the bell. This led to Titus O’neil yet again running down to the ring to confront Rusev and once again Rusev retreated.

Reaction: Titus O’Neil has deserved a bigger role for a long time and it is nice to see him in the United States Championship picture. It was also nice to see Jack Swagger actually have a competitive match and not simply be demolished by Rusev. Hopefully, the upcoming brand-split in the WWE will benefit guys like Jack Swagger, who seem to have been lost in the WWE for some time now.

AJ Styles vs Kofi Kingston

Big E, Xavier Woods and the Club were all present ringside for this match. Shortly into the match, the referee was distracted by the New Day and the Club barking at each other outside the ring. This allowed AJ Styles the opportunity to slam Kofi Kingston’s head into the ring post. Styles’ momentum didn’t last long however, as Kingston fought back as Xavier Woods celebrated his efforts by playing the trombone outside the ring. This match ended in absolute chaos with the New Day and the Club brawling outside the ring. Kofi Kingston launched himself outside the ring onto Luke Gallows. However, when he rolled back into the ring Styles attacked Kingston and wound up hitting the Styles Clash for the victory.

Reaction: This was another entertaining match on this week’s Smackdown. The Club versus the New Day and AJ Styles versus John Cena are two of the more interesting feuds happening in the WWE right now.
