WWE Smackdown Reaction (8/9)

smackdown

Bray Wyatt opens the show and cuts a promo. Bray Wyatt called himself the victim and that Dolph Ziggler had to cheat last week to defeat him. Wyatt then referred to himself as a god and that Dolph Ziggler will never be able to kill him. Dean Ambrose interrupted Wyatt and stated that he wanted to come down to the ring but he knows that is what Bray wants. Erick Rowan was also standing in the ring, thus it would be 2 on 1 and Ambrose would surely get beatdown. Dolph Zigger then came out and glanced at Ambrose before diving into the ring. Rowan and Wyatt beatdown Ziggler for a bit until Ambrose finally joined the fight. Wyatt had Ambrose in position for the Sister Abigail, but Dolph Ziggler was there to break it up. Ziggler went to Superkick Wyatt but Bray lifted up Ambrose  and the Superkick hit Ambrose in the head. Wyatt then hit the Sister Abigail on Ziggler. Rowan and Wyatt then exited the ring standing tall.

Dean Ambrose then confronted Dolph Zigger backstage and claimed that he didn’t need his help. Ambrose also didn’t believe that the Superkick was an accident and told Ziggler that he owed him one. Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan then joined the conversation and informed Ziggler and Ambrose that they would be teaming up to face Rowan and Wyatt later in the evening.

American Alpha vs Mike Vega & Mikey O’Shea

This was very reminiscent of the enhancement matches that have been shown on Monday Night Raw. American Alpha dominated this match and won rather easily. However, before the match the Ascension, the Hype Bros and the Vaudevillians all made there way to the ring. The three teams then stayed for the entire match and last week on Talking Smack American Alpha already claimed that they were the best tag team on Smackdown. All of the tag teams on Smackdown took exception to that and that is why they were ringside. After American Alpha won the match, the three other teams got into the ring and a brawl broke out. American Alpha emerged from the brawl as the tag team standing tall.

Winners: American Alpha

Reaction: The opening promo was entertaining and I’m looking forward to the tag team match later in the show. As for the American Alpha segment, I found this to be a weird one. Supposedly, all of the tag teams on Smackdown were annoyed with the comments of American Alpha, but none of them wanted to face them in a match? Instead they elected to watch them compete against local wrestlers. I would have just preferred to see the Hype Bros challenge them, rather than enjoy their match from outside the ring and then attack them after. Mauro Ranallo also hinted that Smackdown may get their own Tag Team titles which makes sense. I’m hoping that also means they get their own version of the Women’s Championship as well.

The Miz and Maryse were interviewed backstage by Renee Young, however they barely answered a question. Renee Young was trying to ask The Miz about his match against Apollo Crews at Summerslam but The Miz wasn’t paying attention. The Miz and Maryse became so enthralled with each others beauty, they wound up slowly crawling across the desk and kissing.

Eva Marie was supposed to to face Becky Lynch but just like last week, the match never happened. It was not an injury this time, instead it was a wardrobe malfunction. Becky Lynch got frustrated when Eva headed to the back and challenged anyone in the back to come out for a fight. Alexa Bliss came out and accepted her challenge.

Becky Lynch vs Alexa Bliss

This was a quick match with Alexa Bliss getting the victory after hitting the Twisted Bliss. Eva Marie wound up playing a big role in this match. Becky Lynch was in control when Eva’s music hit in the beginning of the match. Eva’s entrance announcer then stated in his ridiculous voice, “Eva Marie is now ready to compete”. Becky was clearly distracted by this and it allowed Alexa to gain control of the match and ultimately win it.

Winner: Alexa Bliss

Reaction: While amusing now, this Eva Marie thing has the potential to get old quick. I’m assuming it will happen one more time and Eva will be forced to face Becky Lynch at Summerslam. Becky Lynch and Alexa Bliss put on a decent match with Bliss getting the win in her in-ring debut on the main roster.

Randy Orton vs Alberto Del Rio

Alberto Del Rio dominated this match early. Randy Orton eventually was able to battle back and hit a Superplex off of the top rope. Orton hit the DDT on Del Rio as he was caught up in the ropes. Orton was gearing up for the RKO but Del Rio rolled out of the ring. Orton then chased after him and laid him out. As Orton was getting the monitors out of the Spanish announce table Del Rio came flying into frame with a chair. Del Rio struck Orton in his injured shoulder several times. The referee called for the bell and disqualified Alberto Del Rio. Orton was hunched over in the ring and Del Rio went for one last chair shot on Orton’s shoulder. Orton then popped up and hit Del Rio with an RKO out of nowhere.

Winner via Disqualification: Randy Orton

Reaction: At the very beginning of the show, Alberto Del Rio threatened Orton and claimed he was going to break his arm. I’m glad the steel chair actually came in to play and I’m glad Del Rio has an attitude again. Much like Sheamus, he has simply been a non-factor on WWE television for awhile now. Del Rio still doesn’t have an opponent for Summerslam.

Heath Slater vs Rhyno

This match went longer than I thought it would, but predictably Rhyno won the match after hitting a Gore on Slater. After the match, Slater looked depressed because he realized he once again lost his chance at joining the main roster. Shane and Daniel Bryan were shown backstage and Bryan stated that Slater showed a lot of heart. Shane McMahon agreed and was going to offer Heath Slater a contract but that all changed when Slater confronted them. Slater threw a fit and called them both losers. Slater then claimed that he was better than Smackdown and didn’t want to be a part of it anyways. Slater then stormed off and blew yet another opportunity to join the main roster without even knowing it.

Winner: Rhyno

Natalya vs Carmella

Carmella was making her in-ring debut on the main roster and she did very well. Natalya controlled most of this match but Carmella kept fighting back. Natalya was going for the Sharpshooter but Carmella countered it into the Code of Silence for the submission victory.

Winner: Carmella

Reaction: This was a solid match with Carmella getting the victory in her in-ring debut on the main roster. It just seems bizarre to me that Raw has a Women’s Championship and Smackdown doesn’t. If the WWE is going to introduce tag titles to Smackdown, why not create their own version of the Women’s title as well?

Baron Corbin was shown beating up Kalisto backstage. Corbin claimed that the assault was because Kalisto cost him the Intercontinental Championship.

Dean Ambrose & Dolph Ziggler vs Erick Rowan & Bray Wyatt

Ziggler and Ambrose weren’t getting along as a team at first. Ziggler tagged himself in and Ambrose was visibly annoyed by it. Later in the match, Ziggler hit a Zig Zag on Erick Rowan but Bray Wyatt broke up the pinfall. Dean Ambrose then knocked Bray Wyatt out of the ring and then went leaped from the ring on to Wyatt. Ziggler then hit the Superkick on Rowan and pinned him for the win. After the match, Ziggler and Ambrose were celebrating in the ring. Ambrose then kicked Ziggler in the stomach and hit him with the Dirty Deeds.

Winners: Dean Ambrose and Dolph Ziggler

Reaction: Ziggler continues to gain momentum towards Summerslam. Last week he pinned Bray Wyatt and this week he pinned Erick Rowan. However, it was the WWE Champion standing tall in the end after laying out Ziggler. Overall, this was another solid episode of Smackdown. It wasn’t a great show, it was just solid and the events that occurred on the show actually made sense and were entertaining. Monday Night Raw was the better show the first week after the draft. Smackdown has been the better program for the past two weeks and this week it wasn’t even close.
