AJ Lee Is Happy For CM Punk’s AEW Run, Doesn’t Make Her Want To Return

Since CM Punk’s return, many have questioned and hoped for his wife AJ Lee (AJ Mendez) to return.

AJ is now signed to Women of Wrestling as an executive producer and commentator. This made fans want to see her back in the ring even more.

AJ Lee On CM Punk’s Return & Possibility Of Her Returning

AJ Lee spoke with Renee Paquette on The Sessions. She spoke about CM Punk’s return and the fulfillment she has now that she is working with WOW.

Lee said, “The conversation was a conversation that was way longer than people knew, with many things happening in the universe. There were many options. It was a very long time of, ‘what’s the right route? What’s the safest route? What does it look like?’ It was something I was scared of, just seeing what would emotionally happen. That was more or less for his stuff. To me, I retired and I retired.”

“I always say, ‘never say never, but don’t hold your breath’ and everyone holds on to the ‘never say never.’ [laughing] Don’t hold your breath, you’re going to die.

I just wanted him to be emotionally safe and protected. That’s been the coolest thing about his experience. It feels like he’s always in a safe space and has a good group of people around him in AEW, that makes me very happy.

There was a lot of ‘Let’s go!’ To me, that didn’t spark anything in me, but the combination of wrestling and writing, wrestling and producing, that was more comfortable and more exciting because it was a challenge,” AJ continued.

AJ Lee On The Timing Of Her Retirement

The former Divas Champion added, “I always felt great about the timing of when I retired. You never want to be the last girl at the party, you want to go out on top. Everything felt so perfect and tied up in a bow.

I know his experience is different. To me, I didn’t want him, or me with WOW, anything to feel like you were the person going back to hang out with high school kids. I was hoping it wasn’t that and it seems to not be.”

Women Of Wrestling Update

Women of Wrestling has already taped episodes for the future. However, there is currently no date set for the premiere. There were tapings scheduled for early June that were postponed due to a positive COVID test.

AJ Lee Names Surprising Pick as the Best Wrestler in AEW

Former WWE Divas Champion AJ Lee has made her pick for the best wrestler in AEW, and it’s not her husband CM Punk.

Lee is no stranger to the ring, having worked for WWE between 2009-2015 and signed on as an executive producer for WOW – Women of Wrestling in October 2021.

On this week’s ‘The Sessions,’ the retired wrestler praised Serena Deeb as the best name working for Tony Khan.

“I’ve been watching some AEW. I’ve got to say, I love so many people on the roster. I think the best wrestler they have is Serena Deeb.”

AJ Lee.

Carrying on, Lee said how Deeb, who was once part of Punk’s ‘Straight Edge Society’ stable in WWE, was a huge influence on her career.

“I was in FCW and I was the first indie female they had signed in like a decade or something. It was this huge deal. I only had two years of experience. When she came in, it was like I was drowning and this wonderful person came in to save me. She was an indie wrestler that had a lot of experience. She was so good and she taught me so much in a very short period of time.”

Deeb unsuccessfully challenged for the AEW Women’s World Championship against Thunder Rosa at last weekend’s Double or Nothing event.

Her most recent match saw her and Nyla Rose beat Skye Blue and Miyu Yamashita during this week’s AEW: Dark Elevation taping.

CM Punk says he would “love” to see AJ Lee back in wrestling

New AEW signee CM Punk recently appeared on WFAN’s Moose & Maggie. The straight edge star discussed several topics during the interview, including his wife AJ Lee and her potential return to pro wrestling.

Although CM Punk did previously say that there’s no chance of the former WWE Divas Champion returning, he would “love” to see it.

“I would love to see it,” Punk began, “I get asked that question every single time I do an interview and I love it. I absolutely love it, I don’t (think she wants to do it), because she’s a teeny tiny person and she has a bad neck.”

CM Punk on AJ Lee

“So I think the shelf life for females in wrestling, wrestling a full schedule, is a lot shorter, it’s a lot smaller than men” Punk continued. “And I think she’s so focused on what she’s doing now, writing screenplays.”

“She’s working on a million different projects, being pulled in so many directions. I think she would probably, maybe be receptive to the idea of coming back, but that can’t even enter her vocabulary right now. She’s so focused on the movie scripts and TV adaptation of a book she’s working on” Punk concluded.

CM Punk is set to make his in-ring debut for AEW at tonights All Out PPV event from Chicago, Illinois.

CM Punk Shoots Down Possibility Of AJ Lee Return

CM Punk puts rest to any rumors brewing about his wife AJ Lee returning since he made his return to AEW on August 20. He gave her a shout-out on the show, saying “One more thing, I just wanna say hi to my beautiful wife, sitting at home. I love you April.” Lee even joked about it later on Twitter, responding, “Wasn’t expecting to hear my government name tonight.” While Lee’s fans are hoping she will follow in her husband’s footsteps and make a return to wrestling herself, it unfortunately seems like it won’t be happening anytime soon.

CM Punk stated that Lee’s not gonna make a return to wrestling and he’s going to quash any rumors about it. The reason he stated is that Lee’s neck is not in a good condition and it would jeopardize her health to be in the ring right now.

“I just want to say, no,” Punk told The New York Post. “Just because [of] her neck. The reason she stopped wrestling is because of her neck. She’s got a bad neck, you know. I wouldn’t want her to jeopardize [her] health and neither would she, so we’ll put an end to that rumor right now.”

Dr Britt Baker recently said that she would like to see AJ Lee come out of retirement and wrestle in AEW. She revealed that she was a big fan of AJ Lee during her WWE run and would love to wrestle her. She also added that a Punk & Lee vs Baker & Adam Cole match could happen too. “I was a big AJ Lee fan. One of the first moves I asked my trainer to teach me when I was training was her finished the Black Widow. So, that would be really cool. I would love to see her back in the ring. I would love to see her in the ring with me.”

Big E, however, has said that if Lee decides to return to the WWE, the company would pull out the red carpet for her and she could even have a schedule akin to Brock Lesnar. “I also think, if she wants it, of course, there very easily is a massive place for her,” he said. “I feel like she’s in this legend territory where she comes back and she gets a massive pop. She can have a Brock Lesnar type schedule if she wanted to and work a few times a year. So, if it’s something she wants, of course there’s a place for her.”

AJ Lee (AJ Mendez) Reacts To CM Punk’s AEW Debut

CM Punk was officially fired from WWE on June 13, 2014, the same day that he married AJ Mendez (FKA AJ Lee). He made his return to pro-wrestling on August 20th, 2021 in Chicago’s United Center.

Now Punk’s spouse of 7+ years, AJ Lee commented on his AEW debut.

Will AJ Lee Return To Wrestling?

With CM Punk returning to pro-wrestling at the First Dance, many fans are wondering if a return could be in the cards for AJ as well. She hasn’t wrestled since the night after WrestleMania 31 in 2015. She teamed with Paige at Mania that year and defeated the Bella Twins. AJ then teamed with Paige and Naomi the next night and defeated the Bellas and Natalya.

Last year, Paige mentioned she would like to wrestle AJ again someday.

Big E Says AJ Lee Could Work WWE’s “Brock Lesnar” Schedule

During a recent interview with Sportskeeda, Big E spoke about AJ Lee. He said that she’s a legend who could come back and work a “Brock Lesnar schedule” in WWE.

“If she wants it, of course, there very easily is a massive place for her,” said Big E. “And it’s weird, I feel like she’s in this legend territory where she comes back and she gets a massive pop. She can have a Brock Lesnar-type schedule if she wanted to and work a few times a year. So, if it’s something she wants, of course, there’s a place for her.”

AJ Lee Not Interested In Appearing On WWE Backstage

WWE Backstage’s new analyst and special contributor CM Punk posted a message on Twitter, where he listed down 5 WWE stars that he wants to see on the show.

The list consisted of only female stars which included Bayley, Sasha Banks, Kairi Sane, Asuka, and Rhea Ripley:

https://twitter.com/CMPunk/status/1205261135349465089

While the list certainly looks interesting and we would like those female stars to make an appearance on the FS1 show, a fan wanted to know if Punk’s own wife AJ Lee would be able make an appearance as well. He added that Lee is friends with all the other females that were listed.

AJ Lee responded to the fan’s query and made it clear that she has no intentions of appearing on the show whatsoever. She noted that she is “very retired” but added that she is game for coffee and snacks next time she’s in town.

Since Punk made his shocking return to WWE, AJ Lee’s fans might have had hopes that she would return or make an appearance for the company in some capacity. However, it looks like AJ has no plans at all to work with the company, according to her statement. WWE announced her retirement in March of 2015, a few days after WrestleMania 31. Lee stated permanent damage to her cervical spine as the reason behind her in-ring retirement, as well as her husband’s controversial retirement from wrestling a year before.

AJ Lee Hired To Co-Write New GLOW Comic Book Series

Former WWE Divas Champion, and New York Times Bestseller, AJ Lee has been hired to help bring Netflix’s GLOW to the world of comic books. The third season of the ’80s based show was recently released on the streaming service.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, AJ Lee will be co-writing ‘GLOW vs The Babyface’ alongside actress Aimee Garcia (Dexter, Lucifer). Hannah Templer will be providing art for the series.

Speaking on her new writing position, Lee said:

“As huge fans of the Netflix series, Aimee and I are thrilled and honored to get our hands on the ladies of GLOW. Aimee’s experience in acting and my experience in pro-wrestling makes us a formidable tag team with a unique perspective to truly channel the voices of these hilarious heroines. Our mission as writing partners is to represent diverse, complex, and unbreakable female characters, which is why GLOW feels like the perfect fit.”

Garcia added, “I’m a huge fan of GLOW. I grew up reading comics and never saw myself represented in them, so I’m excited to explore these trailblazing characters and create the change for the next generation. AJ and I are basically writing for our younger selves.”

The first issue of the GLOW comic book will be released by IDW this November.

AJ Lee Talks Mental Health On Neil DeGrasse Tyson Podcast

AJ Lee appeared on Neil DeGrasse Tyson’s “StarTalk Radio” recently. She actually taped the interview a while back but her episode was just released recently. During the show, AJ talked about mental health, pro-wrestling, and more.

The title of the episode is “Wrestling with Mental Illness.”

AJ Lee On StarTalk Radio

Tyson asked AJ what got her into wrestling and she explained she always loved fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, etc. and pro-wrestling is similar to live-action superheroes. She also mentioned that being on medication for her bipolar disorder made life in wrestling more difficult.

“What made it more difficult for me is being bipolar and being on certain medications,” Lee said on the show. “With some injuries people are like ‘Ok, I’ll take a pain-killer’ but I couldn’t do that, I didn’t trust myself.”

She added that she had to “power through” her injuries.

AJ also talked about the importance of being open about her mental illness and “owning it.”

“There shouldn’t be hush words, we should be able to talk about it, joke about it like I do,” AJ said regarding her mental illness.

Nikki Bella Says She Wanted AJ Lee At WWE Evolution

While they may not have gotten along while they worked together, Nikki Bella says she wanted AJ Lee to be booked for Evolution. WWE is bringing back Trish Stratus and Lita for the event but the rest of the show focusses on currently active WWE Superstars.

Nikki Bella On AJ Lee At WWE Evolution

Nikki made the comments recently in Chicago as part of the ACE Comic Con convention. The twins were taking part in a Q&A session moderated by Lillian Garcia when she made the comments.

“I was actually hoping (AJ Lee) was going to be at Evolution,” Nikki said when AJ’s name was brought up. “She was a huge part of the Women’s division and if she came back, I would totally love to [wrestle her]. We had good chemistry. I really loved when Paige and AJ and Brie and I had a really good story going for a long time. I felt like that really helped with the evolution, [to] where it’s at today. So, it would be so fun.”

Nikki and AJ Lee are the two greatest Divas Champions in WWE history. Aj held the title 3x and held it for a combined 406 days (1st all time). Nikki held the title twice and held it for a combined 307 days (2nd all-time). Her 301-day title reign from 2014-15 was the longest in the title’s lineage.

Just for fun, here is AJ’s infamous pipe-bomb she dropped on the Bellas and other Divas in 2013:

AJ Lee Congratulates CM Punk On First Feature Film

AJ Mendez-Brooks (AJ Lee) recently sent out a congratulatory message to her husband, CM Punk. The former WWE Champion just wrapped filming on his first major feature film. The movie is titled “The Girl on the Third Floor.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/BoFLqqsA-hA/?utm_source=ig_embed

The horror film is set to be released sometime next year.

CM Punk: The Girl On The Third Floor

“At the heart of the film is Don Koch (CM Punk), a man who is failing as a husband,” a description for the film reads. “For years he has skated by on charm and charisma, until it nearly landed him in jail. He now views fixing up an old house as a chance to make up for past mistakes. Meanwhile, his wife, Liz Koch, is concerned about the renovation timeline as they have a baby on the way. With all this pressure it’s no wonder Don responds to the flirtations of an attractive stranger. As Don tears the house apart, it begins to tear him apart as well, revealing the rot behind the drywall.”

The film is written and directed by Travis Stevens. He also worked on the films We Are Still Here, Teenage Cocktail, Cheap Thrills, and Mohawk.

AJ Lee Evolution Rumor Notes, Tammy Sytch Court Update

Tammy Sytch was scheduled for a court hearing on 8/23/18. Reports are coming in that the hearing did not happen and is most likely to be rescheduled. More on the charges and likely sentence for Sytch can be read here.

AJ Lee Not Likely To Appear At Evolution

The first ever all women’s PPV, Evolution, is set to take place in two months. Rumors have been speculating on what former WWE female talent will be appearing at the event. AJ Lee has been on the top of the list but is most likely not going to appear at the event.

AJ Lee retired from the WWE and professional wrestling in 2015. In her novel, Crazy Is My Super Power, Lee revealed that she has accomplished all her goals when working for the company and had nothing else to accomplish.

Love For WWE Or Love Thy Spouse?

It’s no secret that AJ Lee is married to Phil Brooks. Better known as CM Punk. Punk just ended a legal battle with WWE doctor Chris Amann back in June of this year and the battle was costly. Punk received notice that he was being sued due to inflammatory comments on Colt Cabana’s podcast back in late 2014. Since then, Punk has been paying legal fees until the day of trial that ended this year.

It goes without saying that AJ Lee loves and will stand by her husband and making a play with the company that made heavy deficits upon her spouse after the war was won is a bad move. More on CM Punk winning the Chris Amann lawsuit can be read here.

While it is a saying in the wrestling world, Never Say Never, time will only tell on when AJ will lace up her Chuck Taylors and skip back to the squared circle.

Update On CM Punk & AJ Lee’s Horror Movie ‘Rabid’

Former WWE Superstars CM Punk and AJ Lee have started a new chapter in their careers. The married couple will be working together on a new horror film. Punk and AJ will appear in Rabid, a remake of the 1977 horror film directed by David Cronenberg.

The remake is being directed by the Soska Sisters, the duo behind ‘See No Evil 2′ starring Kane. The synopsis for Rabid reads, “After a young woman, Rose, suffers a disfiguring accident, she undergoes an experimental stem-cell treatment that leads to unintended consequences.”

The main character Rose will be portrayed by Laura Vandervoort (Jigsaw, Ted). Punk and AJ will be playing the married couple of Billy and Kira, which should not be too much of a stretch for them.

AJ posted a photo on Instagram of herself in character. She said it was an honor to be involved with the project and her heart is “full of joy” because the movie has so many talented women working on it.  “It was an honor to be a teeny part of a project with female writers/directors, a female director of photography, female camera operators, a badass female lead, and a story showcasing a ride or die female friendship,” AJ wrote. “I am beyond inspired and my heart is full of joy.”

No release date for Rabid has been announced, but principal photography began in last month in Toronto.

CM Punk: Second City Star

Reports are in that CM Punk has already filmed his scenes for the horror remake and has already picked up another lead role in another horror film. The film is titled Team Player and filming starts in the next couple months in Illinois.

Punk will also be hosting the newest season of Netflix ‘s Ultimate Beastmaster.

Future of 205 Live; AJ Lee’s Status With The WWE

205 Live Safe On The WWE Network

WWE is gearing up for the second annual UK Championship tournament, which has led to some speculation about the state of the 205 Live show. Some fans have been wondering if the UK series will replace 205 Live on the WWE Network, but that’s not the case.

Triple H recently stated that viewership for 205 Live has actually been up lately. The show has been stabilized after a rocky time surrounding Enzo Amore’s departure. Following the introduction of Drake Maverick as 205 Live GM and an overhauled approach to the show’s presentation, the show is in better shape than it has been and will continue for the foreseeable future.

AJ Lee Not Returning To WWE Any Time Soon

There was also a rumor on if the Second-Longest Divas Champion, AJ Lee were to return back to the WWE due to the new Fox television deal. Mike Johnson of PWInsdier recently addressed her status:

“They aren’t going to plan that far out in advance. It’s just not how this business works. AJ Lee mentioned in her book that she chose to get out of the ring due to physical issues. It was not an issue with CM Punk and WWE although she probably felt like the child in the middle of a divorce at that point. She was already planning the next stage of her life, beyond professional wrestling. I don’t see her ever coming back.”

VIDEO: AJ Lee Launches “Call Me Crazy For A Cause” GoFundMe Campaign

Former WWE Divas Champion AJ Lee (AJ Mendez) has launched a new “Call Me Crazy for a Cause” GoFundMe campaign to benefit the National Alliance on Mental Illness. The campaign currently has raised $2,105 of a $25,000 goal with 16 people donating. You can see the campaign at this link.

Above is a video promo for the campaign and below are details on the campaign, which were sent out by GoFundMe today:

Call Me Crazy for a Cause

My name is AJ Mendez and I’m a fighter. I have fought to go from a scrawny kid growing up in severe poverty to a wrestling champion on international television. I have fought to go from a college dropout to a bestselling author. I have fought to go from being confused and scared lying in a hospital bed after a suicide attempt to being in charge of- and proud of- my Bipolar Disorder diagnosis.

I have always considered myself a one-girl revolution; responsible for making the change I want to see in the world- starting with myself. But headed into my next battle, I was so grateful to have an army alongside me. About a year ago, I teamed up with the National Alliance on Mental Illness. I had written my book Crazy Is My Superpower as a way to reclaim hateful words like “crazy” and to showcase the beauty in our differences. But I needed the guidance of mental health professionals to continue the conversation and help shatter the stigma around mental illness. NAMI has given me invaluable support and the tools necessary to help educate others.

NAMI provides no-cost, essential information, education and support to individuals and families in need. They raise awareness and advocate for the 60 million Americans affected by mental health conditions. They give help and hope, so crucial to those still navigating their mental health journeys. NAMI saves lives.

As a NAMI Ambassador I want to help them keep up the good fight. This campaign will raise funds to support their amazing work–helping to equip NAMI’s grassroots volunteers with training for our no-cost education, support and awareness programs offered in communities across the country and supporting our no-cost HelpLine, which responds to tens of thousands of inquiries each year to people in need of essential support sand referrals. And you can earn fun rewards in the process! No donation is too small and anything you contribute will be greatly appreciated.

Please join me in this fight.

AJ Lee’s Book Being Made Into a TV Show

AJ Mendez-Brooks and EUE/Sokolow studios announced today plans to turn “Crazy is my Superpower” into a television program. The book was released in April this year under the full title “Crazy Is My Superpower: How I Triumphed by Breaking Bones, Breaking Hearts, and Breaking the Rules”.

The book covers her life, career, and battles with mental illness.

Crazy Is My SuperPower Press Release

“LOS ANGELES, December 19, 2017—EUE/Sokolow, an Emmy-nominated production company behind Nat Geo’s “Genius” franchise, and producer Jeff Fisher are bringing AJ Mendez’s New York Times Best Seller “Crazy is my Superpower: How I Triumphed by Breaking Bones, Breaking Hearts, and Breaking the Rules” to television. The bestselling book chronicles former WWE wrestler AJ Mendez’s unlikely rise to stardom after growing up in poverty and enduring years of abuse. Mendez will serve as an Executive Producer and writer on the project.

“Crazy is my Superpower” intricately details Mendez’s harrowing struggle to understand her demons and the mental illness diagnosis that helped her gain control over her life, and how she harnessed that strength to become an internationally-beloved professional wrestling superstar (known as AJ Lee). The three-time WWE champion fought against stereotypes, forced the men in her industry to view her with respect and inspired millions of fans with her fierce independent streak.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled to work with this team to turn “Crazy is My Super Power” into a scripted show,” said AJ Mendez. “This is a story about the power of female strength and our incomparable ability to survive, persist and overcome. I knew that I would need partners that connected to that message, and Jeff and Sam’s bold vision was a perfect fit. I can’t wait to get started.”

“Jeff Fisher initially talked to me about this book and told me what an amazing story this woman had,” said Sam Sokolow, co-founder of EUE/Sokolow and executive producer of National Geographic’s first-ever scripted series “Genius.” “We’re so excited to get to work with AJ and tell her incredibly inspiring story.”

The book was originally released in hardcover, ebook and audiobook (narrated by Mendez) by Crown Publishing, April, 4, 2017 and will debut in paperback April, 3, 2018. Mendez is represented by literary agent Lisa Leshne at The Leshne Agency and attorney Alan Sacks at Frankfurt Kurnit Klein & Selz.

Season One of “Genius” was recognized with ten 2017 Emmy nominations including Best Limited Series. “Genius” has been renewed for a second season and will follow the life of artist Pablo Picasso.

Beverly Hills-based EUE/Sokolow focuses on premium television programs including dramas, limited series, comedies and documentaries.”

AJ Lee Reveals CM Punk’s Reaction Backstage After Losing His UFC Debut

After losing his debut fight against Mickey Gall during the UFC 203 event, one would think that CM Punk would be disappointed going backstage. However, it appears that the former WWE Star had a very different reaction after losing his first professional MMA bout.

During her recent interview with SiriusXM’s Jim Norton and Sam Roberts Show, AJ Mendez Brooks better known to wrestling fans by the name AJ Lee revealed the backstage reaction of CM Punk after his MMA fight among other things. Below are some of the highlights from her interview:

Having mix feelings on Punk performing in UFC:

“Oh my gosh, it was a mix… so many emotions all at once, such a cornucopia of emotions. I am someone who believes in going for what your dream is. I was a homeless kid in New Jersey and I was a multiple-time champion on TV. And people would have laughed at me when I was a kid if I said that was my dream, so for [Punk] to want to do something, so bold, I supported him 100%. But I really like his face, so yes. But I was just so proud of him for doing it. even the months leading up [to the fight], knowing that there’s this person out there in the world and [his] only thought is hurting your husband. That is what their game plan is for months and that’s their job and I respect the sport so much, and I think they do a wonderful job, but it’s a little weird.”

Punk’s reaction backstage after losing the bout:

“I don’t think it hurt that for one night of working, he made a million dollars. He was pretty psyched about that, so he came backstage with the most giant smile on his face. And he was incredibly sweating and I just threw myself on him. I was like, ‘I’m so frickin’ proud of you!’ His speech was just so moving and I try to not get emotional in front of people, so we just went to our little corner and it was just so cool and I’m so proud of him.”

Whether or not CM Punk has another fight lined up:

“Yes, he wants to fight again and I’m never going to be the person that stops someone from doing whatever their dream is, so I support it. I just look at his face right now and I’m like, ‘stay that way, stay that way, stay that way…'”

AJ Lee Talks About Living With Mental Illness (Video)

Former WWE Superstar and three-time WWE Divas Champion A.J. Lee recently appeared in a video about living with mental illness for Chicago Magazine.

Over the past few years A.J. has been very open with the fact that she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in his early 20’s.

During an interview earlier this year to promote her book Crazy Is My Superpower: How I Triumphed by Breaking Bones, Breaking Hearts, and Breaking the Rules, AJ had some inspirational words for people battling mental illness.

“Some people might think it’s an illness but sometimes it does feel like an extra ability. I think when it’s a part of you, you can see it in other people. I think the fans saw it through the television. And I would see them outside the stands and they’d confide in me about their anxiety, about cutting themselves, about their suicide attempt, and [how] seeing my character on TV made them feel less alone.

As that happened more and more, I realized it was my responsibility to embrace that and be open to them and let them know that they weren’t wrong and they were seeing something that was very similar in me. They could see right through to my soul. So to connect with fans and be even more open was very important to me. Even the fans, I can remember their faces at the signings. I want them to know that we’re similar in that way.”

AJ Lee Comments On Vince’s Reaction To Her Declining ‘Total Divas’ Role

Former WWE Superstar AJ Lee is on the road promoting her New York Times best selling book, Crazy Is My Superpower. During a recent Q&A session, AJ commented on declining WWE’s offer to appear on Total Divas and how it led to her infamous ‘Pipe Bomb’ promo lambasting the show.

When WWE was looking for a cast member to replace JoJo, AJ was a natural fit. She was wildly popular with the WWE Universe and her “crazy chick” character seemed ripe for WWE’s hit reality show. According to AJ, WWE wanted her on the show so badly that she was offered seven different storylines to choose from, should she agree to participate.

AJ says, “It was odd to represent a real version of myself that had storylines.”

Shortly after declining the spot on Total Divas, Vince McMahon approached her backstage at RAW and said, “So you don’t wanna do the show? Well, tell us why today!”

He gave her a live mic to vent about Total Divas and the Divas roster. AJ says she apologized to her co-workers in advance, since none of them knew what she was actually going to say. AJ pulled no punches, running down the cast members as a bunch of “cheap, interchangeable, expendable useless women” who turned to reality television because they weren’t talented enough to be actresses.

AJ says Vince was proud of her afterwards and thinks Vince loves those moments where he can trust the talent to take the ball and run with it.

“Charlotte is a great choice to build the SDLIVE Women’s division around as she’s potentially the Austin/Rock equivalent in the world of WWE women’s wrestling. Athletes, no matter their gender, don’t come along like @MsCharlotteWWE perhaps once in a generation, if we’re lucky.”

AJ suffers from bipolar II disorder and writes about her experience living with the condition in her book. Back in 2012, she had already spoken publicly about her mother’s battle with bipolar disorder, but not her own. Playing off her “crazy chick” character, WWE pitched her a storyline that involved her “taking part in a series of goofy skits in which her character hallucinated, kissed a leprechaun and danced with dinosaurs from outer space”.

AJ was offended by the angle, refused to participate and as a result, WWE pulled her from television and took her off the road for several months.

“It felt like it disrespected both me and my mother. It was a joke, but, to me, it wasn’t something to laugh at.”

AJ hopes her book teaches others battling mental illness that they’re not alone and it can be overcome. “I want to show that they’re not something that’s going to stop you,” she said.
