Balls Mahoney and Axl Rotten Diagnosed with CTE in Postmortem Examination

Late Thursday night, The Boston Globe broke the news that for the first time since 2009, deceased professional wrestlers have been diagnosed with Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy in a post-mortem examination. According to the article, both John “Balls Mahoney” Rechner and Brian “Axl Rotten” Knighton were suffering from the degenerative neurological condition at the time of their deaths, though it was in the “early stages” in Knighton’s brain. MMA fighter Jordan Parsons, who recently died in a car accident, was also diagnosed as having CTE.

CTE is the modern name for the former dementia pugilistica, a specific type of brain damage caused by repeated blows to the head. Initially discovered in football player Mike Webster, the issue began to get significantly more attention when Chris Benoit was diagnosed with CTE a few months after his suicide. Later, in 2009, Andrew “Test” Martin was diagnosed with CTE after his passing, but no pro wrestler had been diagnosed with it since then. Rechner and (to a lesser extent) Knighton were both known for taking incredibly hard chair shots to the head.

Dr. Julia K. Kofler, a University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Presbyterian neuropathologist, made the diagnosis, which was communicated to the Globe by Dr. Bennet Omalu, who verified the results. Omalu did the examinations of Benoit and Martin, which WWE has refused to accept the results of in the past due to missing chain of custody records, which would have documented the provenance of the samples as being from Benoit. WWE refused to comment on the new findings pending its own review of the research.

WWE also intimated that Konstantine Kyros, the plaintiffs’ lawyer in the “concussion” lawsuits against the company, pushed the story on the Globe to distract from court motions it filed this week asking for him to be sanctioned for misconduct. Kyros denied this when reached for comment.

Jonas Shaffer of the Baltimore Sun reported last night that Brian Knighton, best known as ECW wrestler Axl Rotten, died of an accidental drug overdose when he passed away on February 4th. Unfortunately, given his long history of drug addiction and how he was found, this was largely what most had expected when the news broke that he had died.

According to the report, Knighton appeared to be using the infant diaper changing table in a public restroom to prepare drugs. On the table were various forms of drug paraphernalia including a burnt spoon with a  “crystalline residue” and a pill bottle with capsules of a “brownish substance” that the police believed to be heroin. Knighton was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:09 p.m. local time that day.

Knighton had gone through an especially rough time the last few years, even setting aside his substance abuse issues. His in-ring injuries had gotten more debilitating, he developed Bell’s Palsy (the same facial paralysis that Jim Ross has). Then, recently, long-time friend and fellow ECW alumnus Hack Myers passed away.

ECW Original Hack Meyers (Donald Haviland) passed away on Saturday, just two days before what would have been his 42nd birthday.

PWInsider.com is reporting that Meyers died from complications related to the recent brain surgery he underwent at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland in November.

Meyers became a popular act in ECW and gained a reputation for saying “shah” when he would land a punch or kick during a match, a trend that led to fans chanting “shah” along with him and “sh*t!” when his opponent would land a shot in return.

Fellow ECW Original Axl Rotten posted the following tweet and photo of Meyers in a hospital bed before the operation just three weeks ago.

Axl Rotten Asking Fans For Help With Medical Bills, Could End Up Wheelchair Bound For Life

A wrestling fan has set up a GoFundMe account for former ECW star Axl Rotten and due to mentions from Jim Ross and Chris Jericho, the account has raised $1,055 of the $12,000 goal in just three weeks.

Rotten had an issue with his back in October of 2014 and since then he has been hospitalized at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Maryland to receive daily physical therapy.

Rotten originally hoped he could continue his wrestling career and walk again, however doctors have since told him that surgery is unavoidable. Rotten is in need of two spinal surgeries and if they are not a success, he could spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair.

The reason fans are rallying around Rotten for financial help is due to the fact that the former ECW star has exhausted all of his medical coverage, and because he can’t work.

In addition to the medical bills, the GoFundMe account is seeking funds to help make his home wheelchair accessible for when he leaves the hospital.

The GoFundMe page notes that Rotten is clean of all non-medically prescribed drugs and that he is ” both emotionally and mentally in the best place he has been in years, Unfortunately he is though physically at his lowest ebb.”

Rotten recently tweeted the following about his current situation. For those who would like to contribute to his GoFundMe account, click here.
