All Entrants Revealed For ROH World Title No. 1 Contender Tournament

Ring of Honor wrestling has announced the second and last batch of entrants for the ROH World Title No. 1 Contender tournament.

ROH announced the first four entrants of the tournament on August 29. Jay Lethal, Kenny King, Dalton Castle, and Marty Scurll were the first four entrants named.

The remaining four entrants have also been revealed to be PCO, Colt Cabana, Bandido and Mark Haskins.

The tournament matches are set to take place at Death Before Dishonor and Death Before Dishonor Fallout on September 27 and September 28 respectively in Las Vegas at Sam’s Town Live.

It was noted in the press release that “Death Before Dishonor has been an ROH staple since 2003 and has featured historic title changes and epic confrontations. This will be the fourth year in a row that Las Vegas has hosted the extravaganza.”

The semifinals and finals of the tournament will take place at Glory By Honor in New Orleans on October 12 at UNO Lakefront Arena.

The winner of the tournament will earn an opportunity for the ROH World Championship at Final Battle on December 13 in Baltimore at the UMBC Event Center.

Bandido Added To G1 Supercard Bout

‘Bone Soldier’ Taiji Ishimori successfully defended his IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship earlier this week against Jushin ‘Thunder’ Liger. Ishimori will now prepare for his third defence of the title in the World’s Most Famous Arena Madison Square Garden. It was also announced on the Anniversary show that Liger will be retiring at the end of the year. You can read more about that story below:

It was originally confirmed earlier this that Ishimori will be defending his Championship against Dragon Lee. The CMLL star Dragon Lee has been one of the most exciting performers in the NJPW Juniors division over the past few years. Lee had a fantastic run of feature bouts against Hiromu Takahashi whilst the ‘Time Bomb’ was on excursion in Mexico. Unfortunately during their last bout for NJPW Takahashi suffered a horrific neck injury. Takahashi is still recuperating from that injury and his return date is not yet confirmed.

NJPW has now announced a third participant in the match. Ring of Honor star Bandido will be making the match at Madison Square Garden a Triple Threat. Ishimori announced at the recent NJPW Anniversary show that he wanted a ROH star to challenge him at the MSG show. When Dragon Lee was announced as facing Ishimori it was mentioned that he is in fact a CMLL contracted star. NJPW1972 issued the following to quell any confusion: “since Dragon Lee is signed to CMLL, not ROH, Bandido decided to answer Ishimori’s open challenge. The rudo who has been catching the eye of many on the Indie scene especially with his electrifying match at All In against the Young Bucks and Kota Ibushi.”

Rush vs Bandido Booked For ROH 17th Anniversary PPV

On March 15th, 2019 ROH will hold its 17th Anniversary show at Sam’s Town Live in Las Vegas. The promotion has just booked Rush vs Bandido for the show. It will be the first time the two luchadors have ever faced each other.

Rush vs Bandido

Rush and Bandido are both recent signings with Ring of Honor. Bandido signed with the promotion in December after reportedly being courted by both WWE & AEW.

There has also been speculation that Rush was warned against signing with WWE by Andrade. Rush signed with ROH last month. This was addressed by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter recently.

“In the case of Rush, he’s very close with Andrade, who pretty much warned him and Dragon Lee about going to WWE,” wrote Dave Meltzer. “Andrade’s advice was that WWE wasn’t what it was cracked up to being.”

ROH 17th Anniversary PPV – March 15th – Sam’s Town Live – Las Vegas

Only two other matches have been confirmed for the show thus far. Jay Lethal will look to defend his ROH World Championship against the leader of the Kingdom, Matt Taven. Taven has been claiming to be the real ROH champion in recent months. Lethal will also defend his title on night 2 of Honor Rising against TK O’Ryan later this month.

PCO & Brody King will also challenge for the ROH tag-team titles on the PPV. They won Tag Wars 2019 to earn a shot against the Briscoes.

ROH Reveal TV Debut Matchup For Bandido and Mark Haskins

We recently confirmed that despite interest in All Elite Wrestling, Bandido had signed with Ring Of Honor.

The popular luchador was faced with a difficult choice at the time, and ended up taking the deal ROH offered prior to All Elite Wrestling’s official announcement.

We also reported that ROH had signed popular U.K. independent wrestler, Mark Haskins. Rumors had circled Haskins for a while regarding his signing to the company, ever since last year’s Honor Reunited tour in the United Kingdom.

Ring Of Honor has now revealed each man’s opponent for their respective television debuts: each other.

That’s right. Next Saturday’s 1/12 ROH TV tapings, which take place in Atlanta, Georgia will see both newly signed wrestlers face off against one another for their television debut, giving both an immediate opportunity to try and make an impact.

Bandido’s Opponent At ROH Honor Reigns Supreme Announced

Newly signed prospect Bandido has an opponent booked for the upcoming ROH Honor Reigns Supreme event.

The Baltimore-based promotion has announced that Bandido would take on PJ Black in a singles match. It was revealed last month that Bandido had signed an exclusive ROH contract.

In the announcement, the promotion touted Bandido as “the fastest rising star in professional wrestling in 2018” and that fans who subscribe to their streaming service, HonorClub, “will get to see much more of this high flying athlete, including a first-time match-up against a man who has competed in 63 countries and 48 states in Black.”

Ring of Honor will hold this event on January 13th in Concord, NC at the Cabarrus Arena that will air on ROH’s streaming service, Honor Club. The promotion will a TV taping the night before in Atlanta, Georgia at Center Stage. The promotion will be announcing more matches for this event in the coming weeks. Here’s the updated lineup:

Bandido Discusses Signing With Ring Of Honor

Despite his interest in All Elite Wrestling, popular luchador, Bandido, ended up signing with Ring Of Honor (ROH).

A number of reasons factored into his decision, prior to AEW being officially announced. The deal on the table at the time was too good for him to pass on, and so ROH has managed to secure a great talent for their roster starting in 2019. Crucially, this contract with ROH permits Bandido to continue taking bookings and wrestling in Mexico alongside his ROH commitments.

Speaking recently with WrestleZone, Bandido discussed a number of topics, and directly addressed his decision to ultimately go with Ring Of Honor.

“I think that one has opportunities and offers that may only come once in a lifetime,” he said. “Fortunately, my trainer Ultimo Guererro always taught me something very important, even outside of Lucha Libre: that there are three ways of thinking.

The first you act with your head,” Bandido explained. “The second you act with your heart, the third you act out your a**. I haven’t acted irrationally, because all I’ve had has been blessings.”

“At the same time, I’ve also not thought with my head,” he confessed, “because if that was the case, I would probably be in the largest company in the world — not to name names. But I’ve always made decisions with my heart, choosing to act in terms of what will fulfill me, compliment me, and overall make me happy and continue having fun. I think this was a giant step in my career, and I’m so excited about signing with ROH.”

Details On Bandito Picking ROH Over All Elite Wrestling

We have an update on Ring Of Honor signing popular luchador, Bandido. According to the latest issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Bandito signing with ROH came as a big surprise to … members of The Elite.

Cody Rhodes, The Young Bucks and company were said to be very interested in featuring Bandito as one of the top attractions in their upstart All Elite Wrestling promotion. Looking back to All In, Bandido was not only booked into the main event, but had most of the highlight spots in the match.

Bandido’s Reasoning

As for why Bandito chose Ring of Honor over All Elite Wrestling, it boils down to the uncertainty surrounding AEW. The Elite is gearing up to make some huge announcements after the new year. However, they have yet to publicly announce a television deal or tour dates for 2019.

Contrast that with Ring of Honor making a strong financial offer that includes exposure on their weekly television show and regular touring schedule.

Despite this, Bandido “adores those guys [The Young Bucks/The Elite]” and wants to see them succeed with their new venture. It’s reported that he would have been thrilled to have been a part of AEW, but there was just too much uncertainty involved.

With WWE, New Japan, ROH, MLW, Impact and now All Elite vying for talent as we head into 2019, it’s going to be a very interesting to see how the wrestling landscape looks in a few months time.

Ring Of Honor In 2019: What Will The Promotion Look Like?

Ring of Honor garnered attendance records, launched a streaming service, and broke new ground in 2018. Despite this, many fans are skeptical regarding ROH’s ability to build upon their most successful year ever as we enter 2019.

The reason some are pointing to in regards to skepticism the promotion can continue its string of success is that members of the Elite are departing the company. Cody, Hangman Page, and the Young Bucks won’t be on the ROH full-time roster next year. Marty Scurll’s contract with the promotion ends this spring as well.

Those who have followed ROH since the beginning are aware this is nothing new for the promotion, however. ROH has been built upon a foundation of wrestlers building up their names and then leaving. The only ones who never have are the Briscoes, and they seem to be just where they want to be.

ROH Roster In 2019

Out: The Young Bucks, Cody Rhodes and Adam “Hangman” Page.

In: Jeff Cobb, PCO, Brody King, Bandito and Mark Haskins

Granted, the talent in the “Out group” is considerable, but so is the talent in the “In Group”. One notable difference between those leaving and those coming in, however, is that ROH has brought in 3 heavyweights who spent much of this year wrestling each other on the independents. I attended a triple threat match between Jeff Cobb, PCO, and Brody King which took place for Smash Wrestling this year. They were all signed by ROH just a few months later.

There are also rumors that Bandido’s tag-team partner, Flamita could be on his way to ROH. The pair team as “Mexa Blood” and have won tag belts in Progress and the Crash.

In terms of popularity, losing the Elite is significant. In terms of in-ring talent, you can make the argument those coming in have just as much to offer as those who have left, however.

NWA and Ring of Honor

Nick Aldis and the NWA World Heavyweight Championship made an appearance Friday at Final Battle. Aldis applauded for Jay Lethal from the entrance ramp, all but letting the champion know he wants a title match.

The Aldis/NWA/ROH relationship we see in 2019 could be interesting as well. How it plays into what Billy Corgan and the NWA have planned is anyone’s guess at this point. Clearly, the two sides have come to an agreement to work together, however.

NJPW In Ring of Honor Next Year

One of ROH’s biggest draws is their relationship with NJPW. Every year ROH parades around a group of NJPW stars for their Global Wars or War of the Worlds tours. As NJPW continues to grow in popularity, so too will their joint shows with ROH, including this spring inside Madison Square Garden.

Zack Sabre Jr and Juice Robinson are two names ROH is expected to feature more of in the next calendar year. Even the 2019 version of NJPW’s Bullet Club, featuring members of the Firing Squad who kicked the Elite out, are possible for ROH next year. As both NJPW and ROH gear up for the Garden show in the first-quarter of 2019, expect NJPW stars to be a regular occurrence for ROH.

Wrestlers ROH Has Lost In the Past

Since 2002, ROH has hired good wrestlers who, for whatever reason, weren’t getting a shot elsewhere. Tyler Black, El Generico, Kevin Steen, and Bryan Danielson have all come and gone from Ring of Honor in addition to numerous others. Not only did the company keep moving forward after those departures, but they also grew, evolved, and got better. There is no reason to believe anything other than that will happen in 2019 as well.

Bandido Signs With Ring Of Honor

Ring of Honor has signed popular luchador, Bandido. Bandido and ROH have reached an agreement and his debut is expected in early 2019. The news was first reported by Lucha Blog and has since been confirmed by f4wonline.com.

The 23-year-old has been making a name for himself recently in AAA and the Crash promotions in Mexico. He was also recently booked in the main event of the Elite’s All In as well. Bandido frequently teams with Flamita under the name “Mexa Blood”. The team is former tag champions in both the Crash and Progress.

ROH Free Agent Signings

Bandito is another strong signing for Ring of Honor as the company looks to regroup headed into 2019. The recent departures of Cody Rhodes, the Young Bucks and Adam “Hangman” Page could have been a devastating blow, but Ring of Honor has been aggressively rebuilding its talent

ROH COO Joe Koff recently addressed the promotion’s ability to replace leaving stars. He listed several names he feels will be the nucleus for the promotion in the coming months:

“Marty [Scurll] is up in there. Jay Lethal is up in there. Jeff Cobb is an extremely exciting performer, I love watching him. Flip Gordon. Matt Taven. I could probably go deeper than five,” he said.

In addition to Bandito, Ring of Honor has recently signed PCO, Brody King and we’re told a top UK star will be the next announcement.

All In Main Event Cut Short, PPV Almost Went Off Air Before Finish

During the main event of last night’s All In pay-per-view, voices could be heard yelling “Go home!” as the wrestlers scrambled to ensure the match ended before the feed cut out.

The main event Trios match featuring the Golden Elite vs Rey Mysterio, Bandido, and Fenix had to be cut short. The match was supposed to go just under 30 minutes but ended up going less than half that time.

“The main event got cut from 28 to 12,” Bryan Alvarez said on Wrestling Observer radio. “I guess the Hangman Page match went long and the Marty Scurll match went long.”

All In Main Event Cut Short

As the match was on traditional pay-per-view in addition to streaming services, the show had a strict window within which to work. During the match, it was said they were hoping to get the finish in with 2 minutes to spare but in the end, the finish came with only seconds to go.

Alvarez and Meltzer lamented that had the 6 performers had the full 28 minutes to perform, it would have been a heck of a match.

“It’s too bad because there was an incredible amount of talent in that match,” Meltzer said. “They didn’t get a chance to show what they can do by any means.”
