Bobby Roode Talks Retirement, TNA Co-Existing With WWE & More

TNA star Bobby Roode recently did an interview with WhatCulture.com. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

How Long He Continues to Wrestle:

“Right now, physically, I feel good. I think I have a lot of years left to serve here, a lot of great years left. So long as I am able to go out there and produce great matches and keep the fans intrigued, and stay healthy, I think I have a lot of years left. Once I’m physically unable to do this any more, I’d like to stay in some sort of role where I can help guys get to certain points in their careers. But for right now, obviously the most important thing for me is my career and to continually get better, and to re-iterate the other question you just asked me, to once again become the World Heavyweight Champion and be the top guy in this company.”

    TNA co-existing with WWE:

“Oh, definitely I think we can co-exist. I think that competition is very good, I can’t see why WWE or TNA, one or the other, should go away. It’s great for the fans, it’s great for the wrestling business. I think that TNA offers the wrestling world an alternative in a way that they haven’t had in many years. Hopefully, the TNA Impact Wrestling brand can continue to grow, with the changes that we’ve made and the fresh faces we’ve brought in, the future’s looking very good.”

Who could be a breakout star for TNA this year:

“I think there’s a couple of different guys that come to mind. Ethan Carter’s a guy that I think has an opportunity to become a huge star here in the next year. Tag team wise, The Wolves are coming up to TNA to become household names, and The Bro-Mans, I think, given the right circumstances, have opportunities to become big stars as well. Time will tell. There’s some new stars and some fresh faces that are going to be starting up here in the next month or so as well, so it’s kinda unpredictable, you know, it’s early right now, but if I had to say, those would probably be the guys.”

Bobby Lashley Returns To TNA, Bully Ray Face Turn?, Willow/Abyss At Lockdown

    – For those who missed the TNA Lockdown pay-per-view on Sunday night, Bobby Lashley made his return during the show. Lashley came out to answer the open challenge issued by Ethan Carter III.

    – Also of note at the TNA Lockdown pay-per-view, former World Champion Bully Ray came out as Dixie Carter’s “insurance policy” and served as the special referee for the Lethal Lockdown match. Ray ended up turning on Dixie and power bombing Bobby Roode, helping Team MVP secure the victory and control of the company.

    – Abyss made his return during the TNA World Heavyweight Championship match on the show between Magnus and Samoa Joe. Abyss came up from underneath the ring, pulled Samoa Joe down, and ended up attacking him with “Janice,” which allowed Magnus to secure the victory and retain the title.

    – Finally, Jeff Hardy made his return during the show, also in the Lethal Lockdown main event. Hardy returned as his childhood alter-ego, “Willow.”

Regarding Storm’s previous tag-team with Bobby Roode, Storm noted, “Me and Bobby were thrown together, but we made it work as a tag team. It just takes time, and with the new format of professional wrestling, it’s kind of hard to give that much time to a specific area.”

Christian York Speaks On TNA Release, Bray Wyatt, Daniel Bryan, Roode & More

The following are highlights from a recent interview with former TNA Impact Wrestling star Christian York:

On his TNA release: “It was the same time everyone else was getting released, they just called, I guess it was like July 2nd or 3rd or something, said ‘they gotta give you your release.’ I hadn’t heard back from them at all in a while, in May whenever I worked for them last, it was just, they had to let me go. They had to make budget cuts. When they have nothing that they can do for ya, they can’t fit you into the stories, you’re just sitting at home collecting a paycheck they’re gonna have to make a budget cut. That was just the way it was.”

“I don’t know if I’d say I didn’t get a fair shake, I don’t think I got to live up to the potential that I think I have. I think maybe in the beginning they were just testing the waters with me to see if I could get over. I really have no idea because I never got any feedback. I thought I was having some good matches with people, especially with Jeff and Bobby Roode, had some good stuff. Then all of the sudden you don’t show up for TV anymore, you’re just sitting at home collecting a paycheck. I was doing house shows and stuff but that was it. I was just grateful that they gave me a shot.”

On the state of TNA: “To be honest, I think the company’s just trying to get through, so you have to make changes. WWE has to make changes with what they want to do the day of the show. You can’t just say this is how it’s going to be and six months from now this is how we’re going to get there, because things change. Guys get injuries, it’s ever changing. The guys sitting at home, everybody has the answers, right? The ones that don’t do it, everybody has the answers, and everybody thinks it’s easy, but it’s not. To try and run a company, that’s trying to do something that big, that’s not an easy thing to do. You have a lot of outside things going on, it’s not just about wrestling.”

On Daniel Bryan: “I think he’s an inspiration for anybody trying to get there. I mean he’s what, 5’8′ and he doesn’t fit the mold like you said but I think pound for pound he’s the best wrestler in the world. He’s the best worker in the world. You can have him do anything and he’s gonna make it work.”

On Bobby Roode: “The guy I like, I like Bobby Roode. I think Bobby Roode is an awesome talent. I really do. I think he can have a good match with anybody and he gets the job done.”

On Bray Wyatt: “When the buzz started going around about it, I guess when he first started doing the gimmick, I checked it out on You Tube that was before he hit the big stage, it was just the FCW, NXT or whatever. I saw his promos and said, ‘This is cool. I like this. This is definitely fresh.’ But I’ve been a fan of that guy’s work. I was a fan of him as when he was Husky Harris. I enjoy seeing a big guy like him, his build, his weight, that can just move like a freight train. But i think the character’s awesome. I hope there’s a lot of longevity in that.”

Stern and his crew mainly took the opportunity to mock wrestling, noting it’s the perfect job for a homosexual because they are “half naked, oiled up guys who roll around on the ground together.”

-Speaking of the Stern show, on both Monday and Tuesday’s show, one of their “Wack Pack” characters, Eric The Midget (aka Eric The Actor) has been in somewhat of a “feud” with TNA Impact Wrestling star Bobby Roode. Roode has cut multiple promos on Eric, noting he’d like to beat his ass for being a miserable grump. He challenged Eric to come to Bound For Glory so he can kick his ass.

AJ Styles Involved In Altercation With A Fan, Future Of Aries & Roode’s Team

    – Based on what we saw on last week’s episode of Impact Wrestling, it appears TNA is dissolving the tag team of Austin Aries and Bobby Roode. The former tag team champions suffered back-to-back losses at Slammiversary and this past week’s Impact and have been wrestling singles matches at TNA live events. Both men will be competing independently in the TNA Bound For Glory series, which culminates at October’s Bound For Glory pay-per-view.

    – TNA star AJ Styles was involved in an altercation with a fan at this past weekend’s TNA live event from Aiken, South Carolina, according to a report at PWTorch.com.

While approaching the ring, Styles was heckled by a fan. AJ grabbed a steel chair and got in the fan’s face, telling him to come over the guard rail and fight him. After the exchange, Styles briefly went back into the ring, only to exit and continue jarring with the fan. Styles continued encouraging the fan to head to the back with him where they could fight, but the fan ultimately backed down.

Styles would then go on to defeat Bobby Roode using his new Calf Killer submission hold.

Bobby Roode Interview: TNA Contract Lapsing, Impact On The Road

TNA star Bobby Roode recently spoke to Canada’s SLAM! Sports and had this to say about the following topics:

His TNA Contract Lapsing Back In March:

“Honestly with the TNA situation, a lot of it had to do with the visa paperwork and stuff like that, being a Canadian and having to come and work in the United States. Everything just fell into place very quickly. It wasn’t like I was sitting at home for months at a time, stewing and looking for different things to do.”

TNA Impact Leaving Orlando & Going On The Road

“It’s obviously not as convenient. Let’s face it, for eight years, we were going down to Orlando. We were going to the same hotel, going to the same areas. You became quite familiar with the area. You didn’t have a problem getting in or out. You knew exactly how much time you needed to get to the airport and all that stuff. Now, it’s a little different that way.”

“Honestly, if I’m getting on an airplane, whether I’m flying to Florida, or flying to Texas, or flying to wherever, it really doesn’t matter. It’s really nice to be able to come to different places and do our television show in front of real wrestling fans, fans that want to be there, and bought a ticket. In Orlando, a lot of times in the Impact Zone, it was a great home for us, but a lot of times, they were just park people, and families that just came because we were one of the attractions in the park. So you didn’t always get that excitement sometimes during the show. Now it’s different. We look forward to that. The travel is a little more, but it’s a good price to pay.”

Bobby Roode Talks About TNA’s Growth, His Historic Title Reign, Who He Wants To Work With

Bobby Roode was recently a guest on the Wrestle Shark radio show with hosts Simon Cassidy and David Thomson. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

His thoughts on the growth of TNA being one of the few remaining “TNA originals”: “Immensely. I mean we have Sting here now, Hulk Hogan, people that have come into this company over the past several years is pretty amazing considering how young our company still is. We’ve grown so much talent wise, television wise, international pay-per-views, our company is only just a little over ten years old and every year we’re getting bigger and bigger. It’s just great to be a part of it all.”

On how he first got started in TNA: “I got a phone call from Scott D’Amore, I believe he was part of the creative process at TNA along with Jeff Jarrett at the last minute to be part of the Team Canada for the X-Cup Tournament in 2004. I flew in, did three pay-per-views and the rest is history. I impressed the people I needed to impress and they sent me home with a contract. I signed it and here we are today: basically I was a last minute replacement.”

Roode’s thoughts on his record setting world title reign for the company: “Starting back when I first broke in in 1998, being the world champion was something I always aspired to be. I think if you don’t want to be the world champion then you’re in the wrong business. I think everyone needs to want to be the best of the best, and in 2012 I was finally able to cash in and win that world championship, and make history with it. It was a great feeling and I look forward to being world champion again.”

Did his world title reign live up to his expectations?: “Absolutely. I got to do all the extra media, I came over to the UK last May, I went to Australia… and of course getting to work main events, competing with all the top guys: the Angles, the Hardy’s, the Stings, on not just TV but Pay-Per-Views and all the live events all around the world, just to carry the load and carry the company on my back. And that’s what the world champions job is: to be able to go out every night and compete at that level and have great matches. I think I was able to live up to that and if I was given the opportunity I think I would be able to do so again. A little experience on my side now. You know, that first run everything is kind of shiny and new. The second time I hope to take what I learned and be that much better.”

His thoughts on how the roster has changed compared to when he first came in: “I think you can compare our roster to anybody in the world. I mean when you look at the guys like Austin Aries and Zema Ion who just came in. Even the guys who are really untapped in their character, like Robbie E., I think we have such depth in our locker room and it’s only going to get better. Once these guys mature and get a little more spotlight…I don’t think anyone in the world can touch our roster.”

On who he would still like to work with: “I would love to get into a program with Kurt Angle, we had the match at Bound for Glory which was kind of a one and done deal which was quickly forgotten about, so I would love to sink my teeth into something creatively with Kurt. Samoa Joe is another guy that we’ve been in this company together for many years and never had a chance to do anything creatively together. We had a chance to fight last year at Manchester for the title and I think we just had great chemistry and could really do something great in the future.”

*Spoiler* TNA Title Change At UK Impact Tapings (Picture)

Warning: The following contains a spoiler for the February 7th episode of Impact Wrestling:

At Friday night’s TNA Impact Wrestling tapings from Manchester, England, Austin Aries and Bobby Roode defeated Chavo Guerrero and Hernandez to capture the TNA Tag Team titles.

The match was the opening contest of the 2/7 taping and was described by our live correspondent as “a good match some with funny spots between Aries and Roode.”

This marks Aries’ first TNA tag title reign and Roode’s 5th TNA tag title reign.
