HUGE Angle For Monday’s RAW Revealed + NEW Battleground *SPOILERS*

Paul Heyman Speaks On His “Clients,” Relationship With Brock Lesnar & More

The following are highlights from a recent Bleacher Report interview with Paul Heyman:

Bleacher Report: I read a lot about how the manager in wrestling is dead. And yet, here you are in the main event picture on a constant basis. Is it just the fact you are a superlative talent? Or is there still room in the business for a mouthpiece?

Paul Heyman: I never approached this role as the stereotypical wrestling manager. I even avoid that word. I’ve called myself an advocate to disassociate myself from the old term manager that we tried to update 12 years ago as an agent.

Roles constantly have to be redefined in any form of entertainment. Look back at the gangster pics of the 1930s and 1940s and the way James Cagney or Humphrey Bogart would play the part. These roles were redefined in the 1970s by Al Pacino and Rober DeNiro. And again in the 1990s by Gary Oldman and Anthony Hopkins. And will continue to be redefined.

It’s the same way in WWE. If you approach this role as “the rebirth of the wrestling manager,” it’s bound to fail. You have to take it in a different direction. You have to expose the character to a different approach. Or it’s nostalgia. I try to find ways to redefine the role and expand it into places it has never gone before.

B/R: I’ve thought a lot about your most recent clients. Your role with each has been so different. With Brock you’re a true mouthpiece. With Punk it seemed like a creative partnership like Bobby Heenan and Nick Bockwinkel. And with Curtis Axel, you’re the star and he seems to be getting the rub from you and not vice versa. How much do you think about which Paul Heyman you need to be for each distinct character? Almost like, if you were a real agent, your relationship with each client would be different.

Heyman: Any agent in real life does have different relationships with each and every one of his clients. So, if this were a docu-drama, my relationship with Brock Lesnar would be far different than my relationship with CM Punk. And my relationship with CM Punk would be way different than my relationship with Curtis Axel.

My off-camera friendship with Brock Lesnar has always been different than my off-camera friendship with CM Punk. But I could not tell you that I am closer to either one of them or either one of them is closer to me. It’s just a different relationship.

Like any compelling show on television, what works best in WWE is relationships. What’s the relationship between these two people and how does the conflict manifest itself into box office? Whether it’s Walter White’s relationship with his brother-in-law, or his pupil, or his ex-students, or other drug dealers—it’s the relationships of the central character that make Breaking Bad so compelling. And it’s the diversity of relationships that makes it so compelling.

It’s the key to success for any great television show. So, I will approach a relationship on television with Brock Lesnar far differently than I would the relationship the “Heyman character” would have with CM Punk or anyone else I’m associated with.

Because off-camera relationships would be different, so should on camera ones. If “Heyman” reacts to everyone the same way it gets very old very quick.

B/R: I’m curious about your relationship with Brock. I’ve seen you with him at the UFC. It’s not a gimmick relationship, or an on-camera relationship. How did you come to be friends? You guys are as opposite as they come on the surface. What makes you friends? What brought you together as people?

Heyman: Brock Lesnar and I are as different as any two people can be. What drew us together was the love of the actual performance aspect of what we do. While Brock detests the public eye, the travel and all the often documented things he doesn’t like, Brock loves to be in the ring or the cage. He hates everything else that goes along with it. But the actual act of performing or fighting is something the man truly loves. And I share that passion with him.

And, despite the trappings of fame and fortune, we both have, at our core, a very similar value. Our children and our families are everything to us. And it always goes back to that. Brock and I met at a time when we were both about to experience fatherhood. Here we were on an airplane to the U.K., and we really didn’t know each other, and neither one of us had told anybody. We were keeping it very private.

It just happened to come out that both of us were expectant fathers. And the passion with which he spoke about his dreams for his child who had yet to be born—our first children were daughters born two months apart—the fact that we had such similar dreams for our children was such a commonality between us that we became dear friends based on how similar we were despite being different at the same time.

Vader Speaks On Asking For WWE Release, Brock Lesnar, Hulk Hogan & More

The following are highlights from a recent interview with former WWE Superstar Leon “Vader” White:

On working with Hulk Hogan in WCW: “Terry, he was obviously in charge. Everyone said that Eric was in charge but Hogan was pretty much running the show. He did what he wanted to do so when you worked with Hogan it was like working with the President of CNN. He called the shots, we did what he wanted to do. It wasn’t the match I would’ve had with him. The match I would’ve had with him, not necessarily a different outcome, just a different context of the match. Terry is doing fantastic and I wish him well. I’m honored to have worked with him. Hulk Hogan, when it comes to wrestling, he started it all. He’s the man. You’ve had The Rock and Stone Cold, but before them you had Hogan, he was the very first. My hats off to him.”

On why he asked to be released from WWE to return to Japan: “I wanted to finish out my career with my style. I was able to do it over there. I think I was back in Japan, two or three weeks and Baba had put the Triple Crown World Title on me. I was back in shape and doing my style. (In WWF) You’re working with major superstars and they control the show. It’s kind of like working with a bunch of Hulk Hogan’s you know, they run the show. When you’re in the ring with Shawn Michaels, he calls the show, when you’re in there with The Undertaker, it’s like their house.”

On who he likes watching in today’s current wrestling product: “I like Brock Lesnar a lot. He’s significantly better this time than he was the last time around. He’s just perfect. He’s the perfect size, the perfect height. He can wrestle anyone big or small. It’s not like he’s 6’9 like The Undertaker. It’s not like where Undertaker and some of the smaller guys, you know you can’t match them up. Lesnar, you know, he’s 6’4 and he’s wrestling CM Punk. CM Punk is not real big and not real tall yet Lesnar and him had a good match. With his height, you know, he’s the beast, he’s an incredible physical specimen. The fact that he’s just the right height, he’s tall enough to fight, Kane or The Undertaker or he can go down to wrestlers on the smaller scale and have a great match. I think we’ll see great things from him in the next year.”

Goldberg Interested In A WWE Deal Similar To Lesnar’s

After throwing out the first pitch at Saturday night’s Miami Marlins game (and delivering a spear the Marlins pitcher) Bill Goldberg took part in a media Q&A session covering a wide range of topics.

When asked about whether he was surprised to see Lesnar back with WWE. He said:

“No, not at all,. The reality is, if you’re a smart businessman, you leave opportunities open. Why wouldn’t he come back and capitalize on what he did in UFC and get a 23-day deal for a year? Why wouldn’t you do that?”

He was also asked about whether he would be interested in signing a deal with WWE similar to that of Brock Lesnar, where he would only have to work a select number of dates. He replied:

“I’d consider something like that, for sure.”

Goldberg said that he currently stays in shape by training Muay Thai three days a week.

WWE Changed Lesnar/Punk Finish At SSlam, Lesnar/Undertaker Likely For WMXXX

According to a recent report, WWE changed the originally planned finish to the Brock Lesnar vs. CM Punk match at the recent SummerSlam pay-per-view event in Los Angeles. The decision was made to switch the finish in the middle of the last week leading up to the event.

Apparently one of the main reasons WWE made the switch was because The Undertaker has reportedly agreed to work against Lesnar at the upcoming WrestleMania XXX event in 2014.

The general consensus within WWE was that if they are going to promote Undertaker vs. Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania XXX, then Lesnar shouldn’t lose to Punk at SummerSlam, as that would have been his final match before the ‘Taker bout, and would send him into WrestleMania with a 2-3 overall record since returning to the company.

WWE RAW Preview: SummerSlam Fallout, HHH’s Explanation, Lesnar Not Advertised

WWE RAW emanates from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California on Monday night with all of the fallout from the WWE SummerSlam pay-per-view. The main focus tonight will be centered around Triple H’s heel turn during the WWE Championship main event between Daniel Bryan and John Cena, as well as his alliance with new WWE Champion Randy Orton.

In addition to Bryan’s reaction to everything that happened on Sunday night, former WWE Champion John Cena is scheduled to appear on RAW tonight.

Following the show-stealing match between Brock Lesnar and CM Punk, “The Beast” is not scheduled to appear tonight, however, Punk and Paul Heyman will both be on the show to continue their angle.

The full talent roster advertised for tonight’s show includes Orton, Cena, Bryan, Punk, Vince McMahon, Stephanie McMahon, Triple H, Rob Van Dam, The Shield, Alberto Del Rio, Dolph Ziggler, Mark Henry, Ryback, Curtis Axel, Paul Heyman, The Wyatt Family, Kane,A.J. Lee and Kaitlyn.

The advertised dark match main event for the live crowd in Anaheim is Cena and Henry vs. The Shield in a handicap match, although with Cena’s injury, one would expect that it will be changed, or scrapped altogether.

SummerSlam Main PPV Card To Change?, Lesnar/RAW Update, Menounos Match

-While nothing is etched in stone at this point, and plans can and probably will change a lot from now until Sunday, there is a good chance that the main pay-per-view card for SummerSlam may be altered a bit right before the show airs this Sunday.

-Monday’s edition of WWE RAW is at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. Originally, WWE Superstar Brock Lesnar was involved in the advertising of the show. As we noted earlier this week, Lesnar has since been pulled from the advertising. Apparently, there is still a slight chance Lesnar will be involved at RAW on Monday, but as we reported, he is not expected to be at the show.

-WWE SummerSlam Axxess will be at 11:00am and 4:00pm on Saturday, and 11:00am on Sunday. The Sunday Axxess event is where the Maria Menounos and Natalya vs. Brie Bella and Eva Marie match will take place.

Brock Lesnar Claims He’ll Work More WrestleMania Shows, Talks UFC Future

WWE Superstar Brock Lesnar recently did a rare interview with the Los Angeles Times as part of his promotional duties for this Sunday’s WWE SummerSlam pay-per-view.

Lesnar talked about the main reason he came back to WWE, which he claimed was because they were willing to be flexible with his schedule. “I left originally because I was a caged animal 300 days a year on the road and they knew that. That was the bottom line – I don’t want to be that person,” Lesnar said. He continued, “I’m at a different stage in my life where I think I’ve earned all that. That was the only way I could make this happen. They [WWE] played ball and hopefully it’s a win-win for both of us. I really do enjoy putting on a show.”

Lesnar, who faces CM Punk at SummerSlam this Sunday on pay-per-view, noted that he will be appearing in “at least a couple more WrestleMania’s” after signing an extension with WWE earlier in 2013.

When the subject switched to UFC, Lesnar said he’s done with that part of his professional life. Lesnar said, “That chapter in my life has come to closure, and I’m comfortable with it.” He continued, “You’ve always got that part in your mind. I do miss it, but I’ve got to keep myself in check. What I went through the last few years was quite traumatic, not being able to fight like I wanted. I got back on the horse way too soon. Coulda, shoulda, woulda.”

Jim Ross Q&A: Punk/Bryan Iron Man Match?, Nash/JBL In-Ring Future, Heyman/Lesnar

The following are highlights from the latest online Jim Ross Q&A:

On if he would’ve taken a job with WWE if offered one in 1985 or 1986: “WWE was always my goal and if I handled it professionally, and I would, Bill would have been fine with it.”

On the infamous “Brawl For All” in WWE: “I did think that Doc [Dr. Death Steve Williams] would win it. He might have if he hadn’t torn his hamstring off the bone. The winner of the Brawl for it All was always going to fight Butterbean as best that I recall. It simply wasn’t something that was thought of by the creative team at the last minute. I haven’t read Bob’s book yet but he has the right to tell his story as he remembers it and based on what he knew at the time. Bob was/is a tough guy. Much respect to him.”

On whether or not we’ll ever see a Jim Ross DVD set: “I’d be up for doing one but that’s a WWE call all the way. Not sure it would sell.”

On who has benefitted the most from working with Paul Heyman in WWE: “Better question is who hasn’t benefited from working with Paul Heyman? I’d suggest Brock Lesnar has benefited the most considering Brock’s schedule.”

On if WWE stars are responsible for carrying around their title belts: “Champions are resonsible for the upkeep of their titles but spares are available if one is misplaced. Smart wrestlers never check the titles on planes.”

On if we’ll ever see Kevin Nash and/or JBL wrestle in the WWE in the future: “Not too likely.”

On if we’ll ever see another 60-minute Iron Man Match in WWE, specifically between CM Punk and Daniel Bryan: “If anyone could pull of a 60 minute Iron Man match it wuld be Punk vs. Bryan for sure. Cesaro, too. If it happens it would be great but those are few and far between.”

Paul Heyman Interview: How TNA Misused RVD, Thoughts On Wyatt & Daniel Bryan, More

The official Xfinity website recently posted an interview with Paul Heyman. While most of the interview is Heyman answering questions completely in-character, below are highlights where Heyman is somewhat candid in his responses.

On the significance of his role in last year’s WrestleMania: “It’s huge. Nothing short of it. And probably even bigger than that adjective. It’s exhilarating for me because you have the most unique, the most gifted athlete in the history of the WWE, or UFC, or college athletics in Brock Lesnar, going against a wrestler who probably has more heart, more determination, and the ability to overcome the odds better than anybody else that I’ve ever come across in my entire career in CM Punk. It’s a fascinating match-up. It won’t be over in 30 seconds. This is going to be an all-night affair. There’s an old expression in the professional wrestling business; “This match will be worth the price of admission.” I humbly suggest that Brock Lesnar vs. CM Punk is worth the price of admission alone.”

On Brock Lesnar telling him to ‘say something stupid’ on RAW recently: “He wanted me to say something stupid! Brock Lesnar is a man who thinks in a far different way than your average beast walking down the street. This is a once-in-a-lifetime athlete. Brock made his point, he told the world, “I, Brock Lesnar, am better than CM Punk.” So, what else is there for us to say?”

On his thoughts about Daniel Bryan: “I’m not done recruiting Daniel Bryan. I think Daniel Bryan is a fascinating performer who has put on arguably the most consistent string of best matches of the past year. The striking thing about Daniel Bryan is the best is yet to come with him. Daniel Bryan still has more to offer. And having seen footage of him dating back to when he was wrestling in VFW halls and very small arenas and high school gymnasiums, he still has so much more that the WWE Universe hasn’t seen. I’m admittedly, and I will confess to this, a huge fan of Daniel Bryan.”

On his thoughts about John Cena: “I think there’s a streak going involving John Cena that both the WWE Universe and the media have failed to pick up on. The glory days of “Stone Cold” Steve Austin lasted two, maybe two-and-a-half years. That was the peak of his run. He came back as General Manager, but day-to-day, going to every city, main eventing every Pay Per View, the focal point of Monday Night Raw…Steve Austin’s peak was two-and-a-half years. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s peak was along the same lines. John Cena has been the focal point of WWE since 2005. For eight and now going on nine years, John Cena has not only main evented all the Pay Per Views, been the major attraction on Raw. John Cena has gone to every city, main events all the live events, and yet he still makes all these media appearances, he’s done more Make-A-Wish Foundation visits than anybody in history…and he’s a tireless workhorse. And he shows up last Monday with his elbow…looking grotesquely…is that a word? His elbow was so messed up and yet he says, “Wrap me up, I’m going out there to perform because the people are counting on me.” There is a work ethic to John Cena that is to behold.”

On his thoughts about Bray Wyatt: “It’s an emotional presentation, and it sets him apart from everyone else which means that Bray Wyatt will stand out. Whether it’s in WWE or UFC or Major League Baseball or the NBA or the NFL or television or movies…any genre that is star-driven has the need for unique personalities. And Bray Wyatt is as unique as they come.”

On how TNA Impact Wrestling handled Rob Van Dam: “I don’t mind getting into detail. I think TNA squandered the opportunity of exploiting the talents of Rob Van Dam. And I don’t think that’s a mistake the WWE is going to repeat.”

Jim Ross Blog: Will WWE Drop PG Rating?, Lesnar/Punk Prediction, SmackDown

WWE Hall Of Famer Jim Ross updated the blog section of his website on Sunday afternoon. Below are some highlights from his latest entry:

On Friday’s edition of WWE SmackDown: “Thought Friday night Smackdown was a really solid wrestling show highlighted by Punk vs. Fandango in what I thought was Fandango’s best outing and the Triple Threat match featuring Orton, Christian and RVD. I’m a much bigger fan of a wrestler earning a title opportunity than being granted, willed, decreed, etc a championship match. Yeah, I’m old school. Alex Riley did a really nice job in filling in for the mountain climbing JBL Friday night. Alex has done some commentary down in NXt and I’ve enjoyed working with him there. Riley is a bright young man who has a viable future in WWE and is the son of talentd broacdater Kevin Kiley.”

On CM Punk’s matches: “Does @CMPunk EVER have a bad match? I don’t recall one.”

On if WWE will ever drop the PG rating and go back to TV-14: “You asked…I do not feel that WWE will or do they need to go back to TV14 ratings for their broadcasts. There are lots of reasons but one is simple….advertisers do not covet spending big money on prime time, TV14 rated shows as much as they do PG programming. Plus, the talent, and not the TV rating, made the Attitude Era so successful. Cursing, foul language, edgy gestures, ect did not draw ratings and set WWE on fire but instead it was the talents who brought intensity and created a competitive nature in the locker room where several Type A personalities ‘needed’ to be the top star.”

On his pick for the Brock Lesnar vs. CM Punk match: “You asked…Punk vs. Brock prediction at Summer Slam….I love this match and will be in LA to see it live and I think that Lesnar wins thanks to a little diversion from Happy Heyman aka @HeymanHustle. I do feel that this will be a compellingly physical contest between two alpha males who don’t’ enjoy not having the top billing. This match will be challenging to follow. The key to Punk winning, however, may be is feet. More on that soon.”

WWE.com has compiled a list of the Top 10 wrestlers to never compete in WWE, including the Midnight Express, Abdullah the Butcher, Nikita Koloff, Magnum T.A., New Jack and of course, Sting. Here’s what the article said about Sting:

“There is no doubt that if Sting had ever decided to ply his trade for Mr. McMahon, the results would have been phenomenal. Because of his immense success throughout the industry, The Stinger would have been a great fit for the pageantry and spectacle of WWE. Of course, the one Superstar that the WWE Universe would clamor to see Sting face would be The Undertaker. Perhaps if there was one person who could have upended The Deadman’s WrestleMania Streak, it would be Sting himself. “

– With WWE Payback less than 2 weeks away, f4wonline.com reports that original plans called for Brock Lesnar to have his 3rd and final match with Triple H on the show. However, due to The Rock’s injury and CM Punk taking time off after WrestleMania, the decision was made to jump right into that match at Extreme Rules. There has been renewed talk of Lesnar feuding with CM Punk later this year.
