Chris Masters Speaks On A WWE Return, Going To TNA, Working With John Cena & More

The following are highlights from a recent interview with former WWE Superstar Chris Masters:

On his favorite WWE storyline that he was involved in: “Working the program with Shawn Michaels just because he was like, my childhood hero. That was almost the equivalent of winning the world championship in my book.Obviously for the record books it would be nice to say you’re a former world champion but I’m just really glad I got to work him before he retired and I was able to break into that generation before a lot of those guys essentially either went on to TNA or some retired, it was a very different landscape.”

On working with John Cena: “The kind of ironic part of the whole story is that we started training wrestling the same day together, same exact day, I was 16 at the time. So, you know, we go all the way back to the very beginning with each other. Ultimately, what happened was that two months into my training I fractured my ankle, had surgery and took a couple of years off because I was so young and Cena kept with it and within that time went on to WWE first and I came back to UPW and two years later I got signed, so you know, I was a couple of years behind him. As far as feuding with him, it was always nice to go out there with someone that the people are so emotionally invested in because it makes your job that much easier. They love Cena, so to work a guy on top of the card there’s no better payday than that really so you can’t complain from that aspect… On a personal level, we have never meshed. Our personalities are just very different. For whatever reason that is, it’s not a love or hate thing, it’s just two very different type of people.”

On a possible WWE Return: “You know, you can’t rule anything out of course, but I mean the problem with WWE right now for me is that it seems there’s no real room for opportunity. There’s just so many guys that they have and I haven’t watched in a while but from what I’ve heard they combined raw and Smackdown and if you want to just be there just treading water then yeah, but I would rather go there with the certainty that I was actually going to do something and be vital to the program. It just depends on the opportunity that’s there, and it doesn’t seem like there is to me. What do they have there like 100 guys in developmental and it just seems like right now I’m where I’m supposed to be and doing what I’m supposed to do but if the opportunity presents itself I’m not necessarily going to say no but there’s going to be some things to consider obviously. Even before my release I was always thinking in the back of my mind about the potential of quitting and either calling TNA or just reevaluating things because I knew how my work had come along but also at the same time they were at a point in the company where they needed babyfaces and they still weren’t using me so I was just like, if they aren’t going to use me at this point when are they going to use me? It still didn’t seem rational because it’s like, I’m not going to quit because this is the place I’ve always wanted to work, this is my dream, so that kind of overshadowed any thought of quitting but it did cross my mind at the time so that’s kind of where I stand with it now. I’m still just 30 years old so it gives me some time on my side obviously but I really can’t say for sure.”

On the possibility of going to TNA: “I keep an open mind about any wrestling company because it’s my ultimate passion, there’s really nothing else. If I had to fill out a resume, under qualifications I’d put what, standing vertical suplex and an unbreakable full nelson? I don’t know where that’s going to benefit me in society but one thing that I have been exploring while living in L.A. is different movie projects because coming out of our line of work it seems like a natural fit.”

Chris Masters Talks About His First WWE Run, If He Would Work For TNA Again & More

Former WWE superstar Chris Masters was interviewed by Kayfabe Wrestling Radio on Tuesday Night. He spoke about his first WWE run and whether it was a case of “too much too soon” for him, what it was like working with veteran performers at his first WrestleMania, whether he would wrestle for TNA and more. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

His feelings about the current status on the indies and if he wants to see himself in TNA: “I mean, I really enjoyed working for TNA and the Ring Ka King project because it was a great crew all around; Jeff Jarrett was awesome. It was definitely a different environment from the WWE and I did do a dark match with them and it went very well, but I will say this: I am happy with what I’m doing because I’m able to have the freedom of my schedule in being able to book myself out there for indy shows. For instance, if I was with TNA right now, I wouldn’t be able to do Crossfire, because they don’t let their guys do TV gigs anymore. It’s definitely something I have interest in, I mean it just comes out to my only passion is wrestling and I’ve devoted my whole life to it. So, you just have to look at what your options are on the table and, you know, there’s not many. You pretty much have it laid out; you can do what I’m doing right now where you can aspire for TNA but the only place you’re going to get rich is WWE. So that’s just the comparison I make, throwing off TNA a little bit. I would definitely love to be with WWE again possible but it’s like a trade-off. WWE is a very stressful job that basically devours your life; you’ve got to be married to it and it’s hard to always enjoy it. So, with what I’m doing now, you can’t get rich but you can make a living and you can still perform the art of professional wrestling and just enjoy doing it.

“Not all indy shows are the best, obviously, but there’s pockets here and there that you can go to, like Crossfire for instance, where you have live and passionate fans; if you have a venue that’s built for 2,000 and it’s filled, you get the same adrenaline rush as you would, say, for 19,000 people because you have that condensed energy. So, it’s a lot of fun to me and I just enjoy doing it so I’m going to keep doing it as long as I can whether it be continuing indy wrestling, Whether it be TNA or WWE or Japan, whatever. But I’m also at other revenue streams, of course.”

If being in the ring with veterans like Big Show and Kane at his first Wrestlemania helped: “One thing about, especially that first run in WWE was that I worked with a lot of guys like that. I worked with Big Show and Kane and Shawn Michaels, Ric Flair, Hunter. I mean, you would think one would be more nervous, probably, going out to work with those guys but, to be honest, I mean there’s just more comfort because they’ve been in every situation in the book and these guys are, they just; things do go wrong and they will fix it, you know? So, I could always at that point in my career, especially if I was with a guy like Big Show or Kane or Shawn Michaels or someone that was better than me, I could have a good match. I couldn’t necessarily lead a guy that at my level or below to a good match. That was something, in my second run that I learned to develop; just through years in the business and it just takes time. I got signed at 19 and was rushed onto the stage within a couple of years so by the time the second run came around it was I had been wrestling for about 8 years and you start to understand what they mean by storytelling more, and not thing of matches in the same terms; not of moves and what not but in being emotionally invested. So, that kind of stuff helped me lead guys in my other run, like I became the guy that could have good matches with guys that had less experience than me and pull good matches out of them, you know?”

Was his first run with the WWE a case of ‘too much too soon’: “It was a number of things, you know what I mean? It was too much too soon in that I was too young and immature that I didn’t really appreciate the opportunity that was handed to me because they really had the machine behind me the first time. But, at the same time, I mean I was on course; I would have done well but I did a lot to sabotage myself, as far as I was supposed to win the IC Title at one point and all kinds of things, but I had my personal issues and I had to go to rehab and that was the halting point of my career. So, I wouldn’t have had my personal problems, I don’t think it would have been ‘too much too soon’, and I think I would have been able to develop and get better and continue progressing; my career wouldn’t have hit such a dramatic halt. And then, after I did hit that halt, it was such a climb from that point thereafter just to get any kind of momentum or faith from the office at the same time. So, I’m not putting the blame onto the WWE for putting me up too quick, I’m just saying it was a combination of me being young, being too immature and being too much too quick (like you said) and then me making bad decisions.”

What he feels his best match was and the use of ring psychology in matches: “You watch, when you get the chance, it was on WWE Superstars but fortunately we got about 15 minutes, watch myself versus Drew McIntyre from 2011. It’s like a 15 minute match and I guarantee you, I’d love to hear your feedback on it. But, if you’re big on psychology and storytelling, I think you will really appreciate that match because I think that s one of my top matches. That’s all stuff I got in my last year, it just takes time to develop and WWE had become such a revolving door that not everyone can be Kurt Angle and get it in a year. But, it does come down to getting past move and spots; thinking in terms of psychology and storytelling; the biggest art in the whole match is just telling, you know what I mean.

“Like. being a babyface, being able to convey pain to an audience, and believing yourself so that they also believe. And it’s not to say, we hit each other hard; so that it’s not hard to believe but that is the art of it. If you’re the babyface and you taking a heap, emotionally invest yourself in it and believe that person is beating you down and then bring that into the comeback and that’s how you have an organic comeback and not have something that is forced or somebody is just running up and down screaming; it’s because they went through that whole heap and they got so emotionally invested that they believed it. And then, when it became time to to give it back to that heel, they give it back, you know what I mean? And that story is told with the face, and I’m sure you guys have heard Vince is big on facials (expressions) and that’s why; that’s the reason why. You’ve got to get those emotions but it’s just little things; the psychology, the story telling. You’ve got stuff you just can’; learn within the first year or necessarily the first few years, it takes time.”

Chris Masters Apologizes For Tweeting Picture Of A Gun To His Head

Former WWE superstar Chris Masters Tweeted a photo on Sunday afternoon that got a lot of people questioning his mental state and his well being.

Masters tweeted a shirtless picture of himself holding a gun to his head with the caption, “My only fear of death reincarnation!” If holding a gun to his head isn’t a bad enough sign, he was also holding a drink in his other hand, which could mean he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the stunt. Here’s the picture:

Masters posted an apology on Monday:

Masters Says Cena Is A Stiff Worker, Whether He Will Join TNA

Chris Masters appeared on Inside The Ropes radio Thursday night. Highlights are as follows:

How he finds Vince McMahon backstage: “He’s above and beyond everybody. Even The Hulkster. He’s the guy that put this stuff together. They’re an odd family. They are good at business. People who are business savvy tend to come off a little cold. They don’t get too close to the performers. My first meeting with him was very cool. I told him in due time, I could definitely be a huge player for WWE.”

Who came up with Masterpiece gimmick: “Dr Tom Prichard changed my name to Masters. My friend Matt Morgan and I were sitting one day and he said Masterpiece. I brought it to Jim Cornette and he ran with it, WWE ran with it. I joke that I give 10 per cent of my salary to Matt Morgan. I’m just kidding. He always ribs that he’s responsible for it but I tell him he just had one moment of brilliance (laughs).”

On working with John Cena in 2005/06: “That guy had some heavy fists. Carlito and I used to joke around that in tag matches with Cena and HBK, we would literally rush to get to Shawn Michaels, because he wasn’t as heavy with hands and the other guy would be stuck with Cena and you’d be potato’ing each other left and right. I remember at the Elimination Chamber I felt like I was in a real shoot fight. It’s not that he’s bad, he just gets really fired up and he’s got big hands, he doesn’t realise his own strength.”

Thoughts on his TNA dark match and ending up working for Dixie: “I think there’s a good chance I’ll be working them in the future. It’s a different vibe to WWE. I like that Dixie Carter makes herself accessible to the talent. Jason Hervey came up to me after the match with a camera and just let me talk, it wasn’t some writer giving you stuff to say. There was a good reaction from the crowd. All in all it turned out as good as it could go. I’ve planted all the seed I could. It’s up to them if they want to capitalise, if not I’ll just go about my way.”

Ex-WWE Talent Working As Mystery Attackers, Update On Sorensen

– On last week’s episode of Impact Wrestling, a mysterious group of masked men known as “The Aces and Eights” attacked both Hulk Hogan and Sting at the show’s conclusion. Two of the attackers were former WWE performers—Wes Brisco, a former developmental wrestler, and the wrestler formerly known as Luke Gallows. Gallows has participated in all of the group’s attacks while Brisco debuted last week. For the time being, the wrestlers taking part in the angle are being used as extras rather than full-fledged characters.

It was also noted that former WWE Superstar Chris Masters, who has been campaigning via Twitter to join the organization after working a dark match last month, has not taken part in the angle.

– Jesse Sorensen appeared at Destination X on July 8 to address his neck injury and hope that Zema Ion captures the vacant TNA X Division Championship so he can take the title away from him. He then vowed to reign as X Division Champion at next year’s Destination X pay-per-view event and cash in the title to become the TNA World Heavyweight Champion. Despite the angle being put in gear, Sorensen’s return to the squared circle remains indefinite as it could take place anywhere from three to ten months from now.

Angle Working On Comedy Movie, Masters-TNA, Wes Brisco

– Kurt Angle is working on a fictional comedy movie called “Singlet: The Dana Kelly Story” about a former Olympic boxer who is trying to make a return to the Olympics as a weightlifter. Angle is reaching out to TNA fans to help fund the project.

– There is some confusion surrounding WWE letting Wes Brisco leave and work for TNA. Brisco, 29, is the son of WWE Hall of Famer Gerald Brisco and had been getting rave reviews at WWE developmental before getting let go. He’s on the smaller side and a great athlete, which would have made him a good fit for WWE’s planned cruiserweights show. For whatever reason, WWE let him go and now he’s being considered for a regular spot on TNA’s roster.

– There has been talk of TNA bringing in Chris Masters as one of the masked men who attacked Sting, but he’s booked to wrestle in Russia the night before Bound for Glory. This would make wrestling in Phoenix the following night difficult, but not impossible.

– Madison Rayne claimed during a backstage segment on last week’s Impact Wrestling that she was once crowned Miss USA. Her kayfabe remark was brought to the attention of Miss USA 2010 winner and former Tough Enough contestant Rima Fakih, who upon seeing her picture, tweeted, “Well look at her pic u can tell she didn’t win.”

Newark Patch has published an article on Big Time Wrestling’s BTW SuperShow 2012 event last Saturday featuring former WWE Superstars Bobby Lashley, Chris Masters, Daivari and Matt Hardy. Lashley, who defeated Masters in the main event, explained why he competes at independent wrestling events.
