Daniel Bryan Speaks On His Relationship With CM Punk, SummerSlam, Training With HBK

WWE Superstar and the number one contender to the WWE Championship at SummerSlam, Daniel Bryan, recently spoke with the official DirecTV website to promote the upcoming SummerSlam pay-per-view. Below are highlights from the interview:

On finding out he’d be facing John Cena for the title at SummerSlam: “It was incredible and humbling. I have been wresting for a long time and most of the time it was in front of very small crowds who couldn’t care less about who was coming out there. I have wrestled in front of 13 people! And just hearing the reaction of the people in Brooklyn who were shouting “Yes! Yes!” – it was very surreal. Like ‘is this really my life?'”

On his relationship with CM Punk: “It’s interesting because CM Punk and I have a lot in common personally, yet we are very different. He is very brash and kind of says whatever he feels. I’m more laid back and not the most outgoing person. But we have a certain respect for each other. I have been on shows that Punk drove 14 or 15 hours for from Chicago to get paid 100 bucks. We’ve done those shows in front of 30 people together. It’s a long road for guys like us to get here. I’m always astounded. There was that December PPV when I had cashed in my Money in the Bank contract to beat Big Show for the World Heavyweight Championship and Punk had retained his WWE title that same night. We used to work on the indies together and then there we were, both champions. No one really thought we could do it. It’s very cool and surreal.”

On his pro wrestling training: “I ended up training with Shawn Michaels. He’s the best. I left the night I graduated from high school, drove to Texas and trained with Shawn for a year. When I look back, I was so poor – I mean living on 20 dollars a month for groceries. I couldn’t fathom that now. It was tough but it was a lot of fun.”

On his idols: “I loved Dean Malenko and Eddie Guererro. Bret Hart was always one of my favorites. I’m also a big Seahawks fan and the guy who I really loved was a wide receiver named Steve Largent, who ended up being a politician in Oklahoma. He was always so respectable and was never about himself, he was about the team. A lot of people like the brash players but I like people who focus on the team and downplay what they do.”

Jim Ross Blog: Will WWE Drop PG Rating?, Lesnar/Punk Prediction, SmackDown

WWE Hall Of Famer Jim Ross updated the blog section of his website on Sunday afternoon. Below are some highlights from his latest entry:

On Friday’s edition of WWE SmackDown: “Thought Friday night Smackdown was a really solid wrestling show highlighted by Punk vs. Fandango in what I thought was Fandango’s best outing and the Triple Threat match featuring Orton, Christian and RVD. I’m a much bigger fan of a wrestler earning a title opportunity than being granted, willed, decreed, etc a championship match. Yeah, I’m old school. Alex Riley did a really nice job in filling in for the mountain climbing JBL Friday night. Alex has done some commentary down in NXt and I’ve enjoyed working with him there. Riley is a bright young man who has a viable future in WWE and is the son of talentd broacdater Kevin Kiley.”

On CM Punk’s matches: “Does @CMPunk EVER have a bad match? I don’t recall one.”

On if WWE will ever drop the PG rating and go back to TV-14: “You asked…I do not feel that WWE will or do they need to go back to TV14 ratings for their broadcasts. There are lots of reasons but one is simple….advertisers do not covet spending big money on prime time, TV14 rated shows as much as they do PG programming. Plus, the talent, and not the TV rating, made the Attitude Era so successful. Cursing, foul language, edgy gestures, ect did not draw ratings and set WWE on fire but instead it was the talents who brought intensity and created a competitive nature in the locker room where several Type A personalities ‘needed’ to be the top star.”

On his pick for the Brock Lesnar vs. CM Punk match: “You asked…Punk vs. Brock prediction at Summer Slam….I love this match and will be in LA to see it live and I think that Lesnar wins thanks to a little diversion from Happy Heyman aka @HeymanHustle. I do feel that this will be a compellingly physical contest between two alpha males who don’t’ enjoy not having the top billing. This match will be challenging to follow. The key to Punk winning, however, may be is feet. More on that soon.”

DOC Talks TNA Release, Possibility Of A WWE Return, Recent TNA Cuts, CM Punk

The following are highlights from a recent interview with former TNA Impact Wrestling star DOC.

On his recent release from TNA: “My contract expired July 12th and we were in negotiations for a new contract. What happened was strictly a business decision on my behalf and on TNA’s behalf I think. I have no hard feelings towards them. I wish them the very best going forward. It was just that at this point in time we could not get together on something that we both thought was fair for both sides so I moved on, they’re moving on. It is what it is and we may see each other down the line.”

“It all kind of came to play the same week that we were hearing about of these releases so there was a little bit of controversy surrounding that I guess, for that reason. It is what it is.”

On the recent releases in TNA: “You know, this is wrestling. Wrestling is a business where people get hired, people get fired, people come and people go and people come back again. That’s just kind of the nature of the beast so whatever’s going on there; if they’re restructuring the company budget wise or whatever it may be. It’s always initially a shock but in Wrestling these things happen. That’s something I tell young guys all the time, ‘when you come in, you’re gonna get fired. You just continue on.’ In this case I kinda left and it is what it is. It’s just the way that the wheels spin sometimes. I wish everybody there all the best. I had a lot of great friends there, the same as I did in WWE. I hope everyone lands on their feet and comes out OK that’s not with the company anymore.”

On what the transition is like from WWE to TNA: “It wasn’t really a transition at all because I had been working overseas independently for almost a year and a half when I took that TNA deal. I had been overseas and working in Japan. Probably 15 different countries on my own working independently. Then I did Ring Ka King in India. That’s when the heavy TNA talks came about. I portrayed an Outlaw Biker Character there which is of course my real personality anyway and TNA saw it, knew where they were going with the Aces & Eights thing and figured that I would be a nice fit. I’m glad that I went in there and took that role for the year that I did. It’s sad that the fans won’t get to see how that was all going to turn out but again that’s just how things go.”

On working with CM Punk and if the Straight Edge Society ended too soon: “Yeah. Punk’s said this publicly too. Everybody thought there were more legs in it but the fact is the group ended at Summerslam 2010 when we wrestled the Big Show because Joey Mercury tore his pec and he was going to be out of action. Serena got, whatever happened there, personal reasons or whatever, gets fired 3 days later. Then it basically fell apart from there for us. They wanted to move Punk to Raw so we ran into a wall at that PPV. I think it’s unfortunate.”

On whether or not the door is open for him to return to WWE: “I don’t think that that door ever really closes as long as you haven’t done something heinous. Yeah I would be open for a return in the future. Either place. I’m 29. I feel like I’m really coming into my prime as a Performers and I look forward to what lays ahead. Wherever it’s going to be. It’s going to be very fun, very exciting. The best is yet to come.”

Ultimate Warrior Talks Ryback & CM Punk, Randy Savage Road Story

WWE legend The Ultimate Warrior recently spoke to the New York Daily News to promote his involvement in the new WWE 2K14 video game. Here are some highlights of what Warrior said about:

If He Watches WWE, CM Punk & Ryback:

“I know some of the characters, but I don’t watch it. I like all the guys. I guess because I don’t know anybody, I like them all.”

“You would think maybe I would go for a Ryback guy. He’s impressive. He’s a monster of a guy. I don’t go against him, but I’m indifferent. I know a little about CM Punk, in that he does his own thing. I’m inspired by people who do that in their own life. That they just do their own thing no matter what the consequences are.”

His Career Highlight:

“My match with Hulk Hogan at Wrestlemania VI. The buildup to that, where the business was at the time. Prior to Wrestlemania, usually they would do an angle where Hogan’s best friend would backstab him out of jealousy or envy. Cut some promos and say, “if only I had the chance for a match I could take (Hogan).” That’s how they’d set up the match.”

“But the Ultimate Warrior was becoming so popular and selling so much merchandise at the time that if they’d done that they would have slit their own wrists. So they did a match where it was the Warriors vs. the Gladiators. And then a bunch of urban legend stuff has grown out of that.”

A Memorable Road Story:

“I always loved working with Randy. He was so intense. In public, he spoke like he did in his promos. I remember one time, he came out to stay with me in Arizona. And he was there for a couple days. We went out to eat one night.”

“I said, “Randy, just do me a favor, don’t say anything. Just enjoy the food and we’ll go.” Because we were going to go to the gym after.”

“About a half-hour of being there, he said something about the food being good. It was all kinds of chatter going on, people talking. As soon as he said that to me, the whole place went absolutely totally dead silent. Everybody was leaning in their ear, trying to figure out where that voice came from. Then that was it, we were there signing autographs for the next two hours.”

RVD Busts Barrett Open At RAW, CM Punk Suffering From Nagging Injuries

-WWE Superstar Wade Barrett’s mouth was busted open during his match with Rob Van Dam on Monday’s edition of WWE RAW. The blood was likely drawn from a stiff kick from RVD. RVD has always had a reputation of working stiff, and many times opponents get banged up when working with Van Dam.

-CM Punk mentioned the staples in his head as well as his ribs, arm and ankle as injured parts of his body during his promo on Monday’s edition of RAW. Punk listed the nagging injuries to sell the beatdown he suffered at the hands of Brock Lesnar the previous week. According to reports, the injury list was a shoot, as Punk is pretty banged up from head-to-toe lately.

Jim Ross Blog: Daniel Bryan’s Big Night, Punk-Heyman, Bryan vs. Cena

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog, which you can read in its entirety at JRsBarBQ.com. In this installment, JR talks about Monday’s WWE RAW from Austin, Texas. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

Daniel Bryan’s Performance On RAW: Daniel Bryan was the star of Monday Night RAW and his in ring work the last 40 minutes are so was the most memorable piece of business on the three hour broadcast. Bryan has gotten over with the fan base the most natural way possible akin to a dark horse candidate winning a major election while running as an independent. Grass roots all the way for ‘Fear the Beard.’

Bryan vs. Cena at SummerSlam: “For any one to armchair book and think that Daniel Bryan cannot or will not beat John Cena for the WWE Title because of Bryan’s physical stature or his ‘look’ I’d advise you to think again. I’d also suggest that John Cena will have one of the best matches of his entire career come Summer Slam in LA.”

CM Punk & Paul Heyman’s Segment: “The CM Punk/ Paul Heyman promo segment on RAW was stellar. It sound PPV’s and Punk, especially, came off as very real, extremely organic and NOT playing the role of a wrestler with a cause. Punk had filter free emotion and I believed every word that he said. Seriously, @CMPunk is not afraid of Brock Lesnar adn their match, their first to my knowledge, at Summer Slam has me very intrigued. Curious as to the strategy, where it is on the card, what has to follow it, and, obviously, the outcome. For some reason, just an assumption, I could see a serious of matches between these two, gifted athletes who both carry ample levels of self confidence and defiance into the ring with time out. Time will tell.”

Jim Cornette Talks Criticism Of Himself, CM Punk, Leaving ROH & More

The following are highlights from a recent interview with Jim Cornette:

His thoughts on the criticisms that say he’s stuck in the 80s: I thank my old friend Vince Russo for that one. He started that and people picked up on it so now whenever anyone disagrees with anything I’ve done or even that I haven’t done. It’s not about being stuck in the 80’s. I’m one of the guys that has pushed, looked for and utilized more young talent for the past ten years. I’ve been saying lets get the young guys out there, lets push new talent, lets make some new stars, lets expose some new faces.

What led to him leaving ROH: The thing is, I support Ring of Honor, i love the Ring of Honor talent, I love the Ring of Honor philosophy and I wanted to desperately see professional wrestling taken seriously again after it’s been parodied for so many years now. I was talking to a friend the other day and realised there’s a new generation of fans that have never seen pro wrestling presented in a serious fashion and that’s part of the problem. I had my visions for ROH, I’m not even talking about creative or booking or matchmaking, I’m just talking about the way it could be structured and the things that we could do but I didn’t think that everybody in the company was pulling the same rope so to speak, I didn’t think we did ourselves any favours with decisions that were made, and gradually I lost the passion that I demanded of everyone else and you know if I obsess about it for 24 hours a day then I sort of demand that everyone around me do that too for the good of the project. So if I’m waking up going “Fuck, I’ve got to do this today” whether it’s something somebody’s done or an obstacle and it began to be a rib on me. I’m gonna be at the Charlotte Fanfest in August doing a no holds barred Q&A and I plan to give an amusing account of my last day at ROH TV tapings.

CM Punk’s Pipebomb in 2011: He went out there and he said a lot of things that a lot of fans knew to be true. Jerry Jarrett, who was a master booker, always said “tell the fans the truth as much as you can, for as long as you can because then when you work them, they’ll think well A was the truth, B was the truth and C was the truth, then maybe D is the truth too” Don’t give them a bunch of bullshit from day one. Tell them the truth from day one and then when you wanna work them, then you can slide that little white one in there. That little white lie. And they’ll believe it because you haven’t bullshitted them so far. So CM Punk, and I saw it, I’ve been clean and sober from WWE programming for quite some time now, but I did watch that. It was a tremendous performance and it was a tremendous delivery. He said things that a lot of people wanted to say and he made himself in that one night, the new Steve Austin. He did it at a perfect time because his contract was coming up and he didn’t really give a shit ‘cause he’s careful with his money but at the same time he knew he could get over doing that and somehow he manipulated them into letting him do it and probably took a few liberties out there with a live microphone. Then they had to resign him. Two weeks later when he came out to Cult of Personality by Living Color, because one thing Vince despises is having to pay music rights, I knew that he had basically got everything he had wanted in his contract. Then he was poised to become the next Stone Cold Steve Austin, the hottest babyface in all of pro wrestling, but of course once they resigned him they still had to make the point that they’re gonna control everybody and knocked him back down.

Jim Ross Blog: Jericho Leaving WWE, Potential Punk vs. Bryan WrestleMania Main Event

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog, which you can read in its entirety at JRsBarBQ.com. Here are some highlights of what JR wrote about:

Chris Jericho’s Latest WWE Run Ending:

“Future @WWE HOFer Chris Jericho @IAmJericho is apparently done with WWE for the time being to tour with his band Fozzy which was his plan all along. I wish Chris the best in his 2nd passion and look forward to seeing him again in WWE which I do think will happen at a time to be determined in the future. Jericho vs. RVD Monday night was superb.”

Wrestlers Not Saving Money & Planning For Their Futures:

It’s sad to see so many pro athletes end up broke after earning so much money during their younger, playing years. It happens in all walks of life but it seems especially prevalent in sports and entertainment. If someone in WWE Developmental says me that they don’t earn enough money to save any of it, then I often times wonder how prepared for adulthood and a career in sports entertainment that they really are. If for no other reason than to save to pay one’s quarterly taxes, saving money isn’t an option but it’s a requirement from my perspective. #WhatWouldYourDadSay?

A Potential CM Punk vs. Daniel Bryan WrestleMania Main Event:

“Amazing that people actually think that I know what will Main Event WrestleMania 30 in New Orleans. Truthfully, I don’t, and equally as truthful if I did I wouldn’t spill the beans. I will say this because I’ve been asked this question a lot lately, IF Daniel Bryan ever faced CM Punk in a WrestleMania main event level bout, I wouldn’t want to be the talents that had to follow it.”
