  • Cody Rhodes Headed To TNA

    Cody Rhodes Headed To TNA

Cody Rhodes is reportedly in talks with TNA about working for the promotion in the near future. Rhodes spoke with Dave Meltzer at this weekend’s PWG Battle of Los Angeles shows and revealed that a deal is already in place.

Rhodes has plans to wrestle in TNA and Ring of Honor, but does not plan to sign exclusive deals with either. Cody Rhodes recently worked against Mike Bennett for Northeast Wrestling. Cody Rhodes will work a program against Bennett in TNA, with Cody’s wife Brandi (former WWE ring announcer Eden) playing off Bennett’s wife, TNA Knockouts champion Maria Kanellis.

One issue to watch is whether or not Cody Rhodes is able to use that name in TNA. He’s been using it on the independent scene, but working television is a completely different situation. WWE owns the rights to the name, despite Dusty Rhodes using the name long before he wrestled for Vince. Guys like CM Punk were able to use their WWE names elsewhere because they used it elsewhere prior to working for WWE. Cody commented on the situation back in July after word got out that WWE owns the Cody Rhodes name.

Cody Rhodes has certainly been keeping busy, working against Kurt Angle (Video) and competing at PWG’s Battle For Los Angeles event over the past several weeks. On Monday morning he tweeted this list of his schedule for this coming week:

  • ESPN Personality Insults Kevin Owens’ Son, Cody Rhodes & Jonathan Coachman Respond

ESPN Personality Insults Kevin Owens’ Son, Cody Rhodes & Jonathan Coachman Respond

ESPN personality Amin Elhassan is getting a lot of negative feedback on social media after a series of tweets about Kevin Owens’ 8-year-old son Owen. Earlier this week, KO’ wife posted a video on Instagram showing their son’s reaction to him winning the WWE Universal Championship on RAW. It was a nice moment of a child being genuinely proud of his father achieving the biggest moment of his career. Elhassan saw the video and decided to take a dig at pro wrestling being ‘entertainment.’

This got wrestling fans on Twitter riled up, with several of them pointing out to Elhassan that Kevin Owens’ son is autistic. In response to somebody telling Elhassan, “he’s autistic,” he replied:

After it was clarified that Kevin Owens son was autistic (which really has nothing to do with mocking a child for being proud of his father), Elhassan continued:

Cody Rhodes caught wind of the exchange and told WWE they should have nothing to do with an organization that employs somebody who insults a child. He told them to stop working with TMZ after the tabloid site published the audio of his mother calling 911 when his father Dusty was dying.

ESPN’s Jonathan Coachman chimed in, putting Elhassan in his place and complimenting Kevin Owens.

WWE RAW General Manager Mick Foley says an apology is in order.

Discussion: Is this a big fuss over nothing or was it a bad move for Amin Elhassan to say the things he did?

  • Cody Rhodes vs. Kurt Angle Results & Video

Rhodes and Angle are scheduled to wrestle each other once against at WCPW’s October 8th event from Manchester, England.

Former WWE Superstar Ryback also did a run-in during a match between Vik Dalishus and Hale Collins.

  • Cody Rhodes Talks About Life After WWE, Dusty Wanting Him To Leave Back In 2012

Cody Rhodes Talks About Life After WWE, Dusty Wanting Him To Leave Back In 2012

Former WWE Superstar Cody Rhodes called into Busted Open this week with Doug Mortman and Larry Dallas to discuss his WWE departure, working on the independent scene, souring on the Stardust gimmick and living life with a “What would Dusty do?” attitude. Here are the highlights of what he said about:

If he was scared to finally leave WWE:

“So, little-known fact, I had kind of planned for some time that I would be leaving. My father actually wanted me to ask for my release after WrestleMania 28 in Miami. I remember him telling me and it took me, gosh, five years to follow his advice. Yeah, I’d say it’s scary, but maybe it’s not scary at all now that I think about it. Just because I know what I’m capable of doing and I know what I’m capable of not. I didn’t want to be delusional about it. I was very familiar with my own skill-set and I wasn’t able to put it on display where I was at, so why stay? Why stay when there are these opportunities. I didn’t get the opportunity to wrestle Kurt Angle in WWE; I got to wrestle Kurt Angle in Northeast Wrestling and not only Kurt Angle, Mike Bennett – the shining star of TNA, the ‘Miracle’ Mike Bennett – the night before. And then Sunday, Sami Callihan, who is just building a massive brand for himself all without the machine. You mention Brian Anthony, who’s kind of the young guy on the totem pole – well, that’s the one you have to look out for – and Ricky Steamboat’s involved with those matches. Those matches weren’t happening for me in WWE, so why stay?”

Not wanting to stay in WWE just for the money:

“I’m rich already. I don’t need the money (laughing). I worked for them for ten years and they paid me really, really well. I absolutely appreciate what you’re saying because there are those who stay with the mentality… the ‘pin me, pay me’ mentality. That don’t work for me, bud. This was never about the money. It was about those moments – you know, I’m from a wrestling family so I grew up wanting to have moments like I saw my father have and if I can’t chase those, then I’m not doing the right job. That connection he had as a performer with the fan – the real, authentic connection – even when you only get that in fleeting situations, it’s the best feeling in the world for a performer. So it made it easy for me.”

Wanting to return to being Cody Rhodes after Dusty’s passing:

“It worked…when the fans started chanting ‘Cody’ and I always thought, okay, so they’re chanting ‘Cody’, it gets under the skin of Stardust. Stardust is like this symbiote that got into the blood of the original Cody Rhodes and the fans remember, so someone’s going to knock the Stardust out of Cody, essentially. I always thought they went hand-in-hand so I thought, okay, it’s time for me to move on. The fans are ready, they’re the ones chanting it, and – especially after my Dad’s passing – it’s almost a little awkward for them to watch this character portrayal. This method acting, kind of – it’s awkward to them. They know who I am. They know what I’ve been through. I didn’t feel like I was saddled with it until my Dad’s passing and then it just seemed like just no one was hearing what I was hearing as far as the fans wanting me to come back as Cody. And it’s real easy for a talent to become kind of disillusioned like, ‘Oh, well, they want it. They want it. Hear ‘em?’ and sometimes it’s not the fans that people listen to the most and that’s when things don’t go well. In this case, though, it all led to where I am now so no harm, no foul.”

Keeping a promise to his father to never use his passing in storyline:

“Here’s the issue: I didn’t want to be anything after my Dad’s passing. I didn’t want to be Stardust, but I didn’t want to be Cody Rhodes either, because – it’s a very long story that I shared with my buddy the other night and some people know this. My Dad despised the angle between – I want to say it was Rey Mysterio and Randy Orton, where they mentioned Eddie Guerrero and they mentioned his passing and they used it as a vessel. A lot of people said, ‘Oh, well, Eddie would love this.’ He might have, but I never, ever, ever will forget – my Dad and I were watching Raw at the time. My Dad said, ‘Do not let anyone ever say I would’ve loved something.’ And he was just talking about, in general, for when the day comes that he’s not around and that stuck with me forever. I remember he went on a whole tirade that night. He was like, ‘How do they know for sure?’ and he was one of those who I had to beg him to come back for Battleground. I had to beg him to come back for anything. He really wanted his body of work to stand on its own and speak for itself. So when he passed, no one presented me with the kind of option of, hey, let me rally the flag and do it for the family. But I personally wouldn’t have been comfortable doing it because I had built my previous nine, ten years there on trying to be anything, but Dusty’s son so it would be cheap, it would be hollow for me to have done it then. Would it have worked? Probably, but I didn’t want to do that because I love my Dad too much to bring his name up on TV and say I’m doing it for him when the last nine, ten years of my career, I had been doing it for me, you know?”

The void left by Dusty’s passing and the personal nature of it fans don’t seem to grasp:

“It’s Dusty Rhodes, man. He’s one of the Mount Rushmore of professional wrestling and if you disagree, I would tell you to look into what he did for cable television. Without Dusty and without Vince going at each other in the 1980’s, the advent of cable and pay-per-view would not have happened the way it happened. So I always consider him from both a biased family member, but also from an objective wrestling fan standpoint, I consider him one of wrestling’s Mount Rushmore. It’s a void that – I don’t think wrestling fans have had to deal with a loss like this ever. There have been some terrible and tragic losses, but with Dusty, it’s been really unique in how it’s been handled. I don’t know how many times I meet folks and, for whatever reason they think I want to hear this, but they say, ‘I was so sad when your Dad passed away’ and I’m always thinking, you know, no kidding, so was I. It was my Dad. That’s like the number one thing fans say to me in the airport – ‘I’m sorry about your father’ – and I’m like, ‘Well, that’s nice. Thank you, thank you so much, but so am I.’ My mom noticed this because she went to the NWA Legends Fanfest. A lot of people like to tell us how awful losing Dusty was and, as much as we appreciate that, I think people forget I didn’t just lose the ‘American Dream’, the character you knew on television. That was my father. Dusty was semi-retired when I was growing up. He was there for everything I ever did. I caught Dusty taking a picture of me and Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania in Atlanta behind our backs, standing together before my match. He became a really big fan of mine and that’s a different loss than just losing someone you’re familiar with on television, but I do love all the love that surrounds the Dream.”

    – Cody Rhodes is back in the ring. • Cody Rhodes On Stardust Being A “F*cking Space Clown,” Vince’s Rivalry With Dusty, More

Cody Rhodes On Stardust Being A “F*cking Space Clown,” Vince’s Rivalry With Dusty, More

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khXHqK_HY9o

Former WWE Superstar Cody Rhodes was interviewed by Aubrey Sitterson last week on a special edition of the Straight Shoot podcast. The nearly 2-hour interview covered a wise range of topics, including Evolve, Arrow, PWG’s BOLA and more

    – He just finished shooting his episode for the show arrow, which is one of the most exciting things he’s ever done. He couldn’t believe how well the actors were treated on set, including somebody tying his shoe for him in between scenes. Cody couldn’t give specifics about the episode, but if you were a fan of the SummerSlam match with Steven Amell and Stardust, you will love this. It was a very physical episode so he felt at home, even though he’s not an actor.

    – He plans to wrestle for a long time and loves the business. Even if he got a great ongoing acting gig, most shows don’t shoot on the weekends and he’d still wrestle on independent shows. After being on the road for years, he’s adjusting fine to living in one place. He works out in the mornings, built a wrestling ring at his house and goes for a jog with his dog at nights. He’s getting back into gaming.

    – Leaving WWE was the biggest professional decision he’s ever made and he had a lot of time to think about it. The tipping point for him came when RAW was in Greensboro, North Carolina and he was changing in the WWE.com room, which was the old dressing room from legendary events like Starrcade. He looked at his gear bag, he saw the Stardust body suit (which he always hated) and in that moment he felt like he was betraying himself.

    – At the end of his run, he was completely done with the Stardust character. Whenever he was portraying Stardust, he enjoyed being in the moment and saw it as escapism. But from a career perspective, he was dying to be Cody Rhodes. He offered storyline suggestions of how they could end the character but WWE wasn’t interested. On the bright side, it allowed him to meet Drax Shadow, the young cancer patient who was a big WWE fan and was inspired by Stardust.

    – It really rubbed him the wrong way when the NXT wrestlers were referred to as “Dusty’s Kids.” Cody said,

“When you’re calling the NXT talent Dusty’s Kids and his actual kid is working there, the last thing you want to do is dress up like a fucking space clown.”

    – They talked about the many different phases of his career, starting of as Bob Holly’s lacky then moving on to working with Ted DiBiase and Legacy, Damien Sandow, etc. Cody said WWE may have done guys like him and Ted DiBiase a disservice by debuting them so early. He said he was clearly not ready to make his WWE debut when they brought him in. He was unpolished and looked like a default ‘Create a Wrestler’ from a video game. He was very generic, didn’t know anything about working in the ring and feels it took a good 2 years before he belonged on television.

    – He would frequently visit the WWE Performance Center and try different variations on his character. None of it was catching anybody’s attention in management. He was told twice that he would be winning Money in the Bank and both times on the day of, they told him they’re going in a different direction.

    – Cody was asked about the longtime speculation that the McMahon family has a problem with the Rhodes family, dating back to the Virgil character being named after Dusty, Vince putting Dusty in polka dots, Goldust being given a freak gimmick and then WWE not getting the most out of Cody and turning him into a space clown. Did Vince hate/fear/resent Dusty? Cody said from his perspective, no, he dos not think Vince hates the Rhodes family. However, other people who are very close to Vince and were close to Dusty have told Cody that Vince never got over the WWF vs. Jim Crocket Promotions rivalry in the 80’s.

Cody never got the vibe that Vince didn’t like him due to him being Dusty’s son, but he feels that Vince won and should be over it. Cody acknowledged there is certainly a lot of evidence to support the idea that Vince holds animosity towards Dusty. However, WWE has also done a lot to honor Dusty after his passing, including the bronze statue and the NXT tag team cup being named after him. He acknowledged WWE has done a phenomenal job in honoring Dusty’s legacy.

    – He spoke about the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic tournament in NXT. Cody was pretty sure that he and Goldust were offered a spot in the tournament, but he could never wrestle in a tournament honoring Dusty as Stardust. At one point, a WWE writer “who shouldn’t even work there” asked Cody if he wanted to start a feud with Finn Balor by smashing the winners’ trophy over Balor’s head. He had never felt more disrespected.

    – Cody does not watch the current WWE product. WWE Superstars are given free access to the WWE Network. After Cody was released, one of the first things WWE did was revoke his Network credentials. He now uses Cesaro’s account. He watches some wrestling, but not WWE. He’s got a bunch of matches coming up and he studies tapes of his opponents.
