Cody Rhodes Discusses Facing Minoru Suzuki At Death Before Dishonor, His Pro Wrestling Future, More

Ring of Honor World Heavyweight Champion Cody Rhodes spoke with Brian Fritz of Sporting News to promote Friday’s Death Before Dishonor pay-per-view. Here are the highlights:

Defending the ROH World Title against Minoru Suzuki:

“He’s a maneater,” Cody said of the ROH Title challenger. “He’s a throwback in a sense to an era where you’d go to shows and you know you couldn’t kick that guy’s ass. It’s unlike any match type I’ve ever been faced with and it presents a very well-developed picture for me in the sense that I am a pro wrestler. Minoru Suzuki is a pioneer in the world of mixed martial arts. And he, as a professional wrestler, is an absolute legend.”

His future in pro wrestling:

“I think 2018, we’re (Cody and his wife Brandi) going to make a decision probably between New Japan Pro Wrestling and Ring of Honor or both,” explained Cody. “Or we’re going to make the decision to go right back on the complete independent brand tour. Who knows. I got my feel of the lay of the land and now I know how I want to approach the next year.”

Michael Hayes Invites Cody Rhodes to Team With Goldust At WWE Starrcade

Well, this just got interesting. Earlier today, WWE announced that the November 25th SmackDown live event from Greensboro, North Carolina will be a special Starrcade event. Starrcade, of course, being the annual NWA/WCW pay-per-view that ran from 1983-2000.

Upon hearing the news of WWE resurrecting the event created by the late “American Dream” Dusty Rhodes, Dusty’s son and Ring of Honor Champion Cody Rhodes called upon WWE official Michael Hayes to honor Dusty by featuring Goldust on the card.

Michael Hayes has since responded to Cody, offering him an opportunity to team with his brother, Goldust. While it’s unlikely that Cody will be gracing a WWE ring any time soon, there would be some poetic justice to the Rhodes brothers teaming together one more time  in the venue that holds such rich history for their family.

Cody & Brandi Rhodes Comment On WWE Starrcade

On Monday, WWE announced the return of Starrcade, the annual NWA/WCW pay-per-view that ran from 1983-2000. WWE Starrcade will be a special SmackDown live event held on Saturday, November 25th from the Greensboro Coliseum in North Carolina.

The main event of the first Starrcade, which was held at the Greensboro Coliseum, featured Ric Flair vs. Harley Race inside a steel cage. As an homage to the first Starrcade, WWE Starrcade will feature two steel cage matches as well as appearances by NWA legends the Rock ‘n Roll Express and Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat.

Cody and Brandi Rhodes have since reacted to the news of WWE reviving Starrcade, an event created by the late “American Dream” Dusty Rhodes. Cody has requested that WWE book his brother Goldust for the show, while Brandi took offense to the fact that WWE waited until Dusty passed before holding a Starrcade event and have yet to credit him for his contribution.

As noted earlier, WWE is reportedly considering bringing back several WCW-branded PPV events (More Details).

Main Event Of ROH Death Before Dishonor PPV Revealed

The main event of Ring of Honor’s Death Before Dishonor XV PPV has been revealed.

ROH officials announced at Saturday’s TV tapings that Cody Rhodes would defend the ROH World Title against Minoru Suzuki in the main event of the upcoming pay-per-view event, which takes place next month. This marks Suzuki’s first match in the United States in over 25 years.

If you recall, Cody had previously tweeted that facing Suzuki was one of his dream matchups. Now, that dream will come true. KUSHIDA will also be working the event.

The Death Before Dishonor PPV is set to take place at Sam’s Town Live in Las Vegas, Nevada on September 22nd. Several wrestlers from New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) are expected to work the event. We have full spoilers from the tapings posted on the homepage, and you can check them out here.

Cody Rhodes On Which NJPW Star ‘Is The Most WWE Superstar’ He Has Ever Wrestled

Ring Of Honor (ROH) World Heavyweight Champion Cody Rhodes recently did an interview with Fan Buzz to offer his opinions on the various opponents he has had throughout his career. Rhodes gave his thoughts on Marty Scurll, The Young Bucks, Okada, and The Revival. You can check out what he had to say about them here:

Marty Scurll:

“I don’t think people realize how good of an addition to the Bullet Club Marty was. Marty represents this whole U.K. boom in a nutshell. When you look at Marty, the hard work, the attention to detail, the character, the costume, the just flamboyance of The Villain. It brings an entirely different edge.

The Young Bucks:

“They’re a completely different experience. They have a psychology that is unique to them and it’s polarizing. And when people try to copy it, it’s just wrong. They’re the only ones who can do it.”

Okada:

“I hope people understand what I’m saying, but Okada is the most WWE superstar I’ve ever wrestled. He reminds me of a Japanese Randy Orton. He is aware of every camera that’s on the floor, it’s almost as if he’s aware of every heartbeat that’s in the building.”

The Revival:

“They’re the absolute worst. I have a three-prong, three-tier, three-word approach to the Revival. All that aside, I really do want to see what it looks like with the Young Bucks and the Revival in the ring. I think they’d have a great, great, great match.”

Cody Rhodes Discusses WWE Still Owning The ‘Rhodes’ Name

Former WWE Superstar and current Ring Of Honor (ROH) World Heavyweight Champion Cody Rhodes was recently a guest on WWE Hall Of Famer Jerry “The King” Lawler’s podcast, Dinner With The King, to promote their match against one another this weekend (Fri. August 25, 2017) for the Northeast Wrestling promotion, as the NEW Heavyweight Championship and ROH World Title will be on the line.

Rhodes discussed his current situation with ROH, his career after leaving WWE, and WWE owning the ‘Rhodes’ name. You can check out the highlights below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GArkRkvwwp0

His current situation with ROH:

“Ring of Honor hates the fact that I genuinely remained a free agent; I did not sign a contract with them.

“I signed on for various dates, and I have many dates left with them. I really like Ring of Honor. But I’m not going to be exclusive anywhere. I did exclusive.”

Life after WWE:

“This is the happiest I’ve been in my career. It’s been so rewarding to get out there and do my own schedule. I’m very much a happy man. It’s a cool time.”

WWE owning the ‘Rhodes’ name:

“It’s a very simple matter of if I want to ask for my last name, if I want to ask for Cody Rhodes back to perform under it — I perform under it at non-televised events, it’s not secret to the fans that’s my last name — but when it comes to television, that’s WWE’s intellectual property. And I am wholeheartedly sure that if I were to ask them to go by Rhodes, they would have no problem.

“But I don’t mind going by just Cody. I think there’s something cool about it.”

Cody Rhodes Explains Why His Run In GFW Was Short

Ring of Honor World Heavyweight Champion Cody Rhodes recently spoke with FanBuzz.com to talk about various topics including his departure from WWE, success in NJPW and more. You can check out the highlights right here:

The reason he didn’t tell Goldust about leaving WWE:

“He didn’t hear about it. I didn’t really share it with him, I don’t know why. He found out like everyone else did that day,” Rhodes said. “That was a decision where I can’t stay with WWE because you guys are honoring my dad so much. I’m an individual myself. I love my dad, but if I stay here because you guys are honoring his legacy, yet you don’t honor me and honor my hard work, then I can tell you the number one person who would be pissed off would be my dad.”

His short time in GFW:

“Brandi was watching Maria and Mike (Bennett) on Pop and she wanted to go. I didn’t have any plans to go, but I thought I could absolutely try to help make that happen. I didn’t have a bad outing at all or a single complaint. I do think it was a bit misleading to fans whereas I had only signed on to do 3-4 dates and I didn’t re-sign — I would have made everyone aware if I had re-signed. So it was a little misleading because I think they made it seem like I was part of the roster and I really wasn’t, I was just dropping in and saying hello on occasion,” Rhodes said.

“They let me do that, so I respect Impact for letting me do that. I really liked Dixie (Carter), really liked Billy (Corgan), really liked Jeff and Karen (Jarrett). No complaints.”

Rhodes also talked about his goals for next year and more. You can read the entire interview here.

Cody Rhodes Talks CM Punk’s ‘Pipebomb’ Being A Defining Moment In Wrestling

Former WWE Superstar and current Ring Of Honor (ROH) World Heavyweight Champion Cody Rhodes recently did an interview with FOX Sports: Braves to talk about his professional wrestling career. During the interview Rhodes talked about winning the ROH Title, busting his lip open during the match, what the wrestling industry is like today, Dusty Rhodes, and having to compete with Mayweather vs. McGregor. You can check out the highlights right here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zP51oGqTjTo

Winning the ROH Title:

“I think I felt like I’ll definitely be prepared for this moment, I wanted to be the World Champion since I was a little kid, and i was thrown and rattled by a series of events that night, I busted my lip wide open in the first three minutes of the match where it was legit just hanging open.

“We almost went off the air with a decisive conclusion, so here I am going on last, that’s what I always wanted, and i almost take them off the air without there being a winner. I spent my celebratory moments in the hospital where they stitched me up and, and it still hits me every day. Every time I see it and every time people ask at signings or meet and greets, people ask – it’s just a really special feeling and a cool responsibility.”

Busting his lip open during the match:

“I didn’t know. I thought I had just bit my lip or something. I had Nick Jackson of The Young Bucks, he goes ‘Bro, you gotta go to the hospital.’ I said ‘I don’t gotta go to the hospital.’ My wife had a 5 A.M. flight the next morning – so what was meant to be this real celebratory evening kinda turned out to be just business as usual. Hospital trip, snuck back into the room while she was asleep I was like (whispering) ‘Hey, I’m world champion.'”

Today’s professional wrestling industry:

“The business is just in this like, rapid – I envision it as being in this test tube and taking various shapes every hour and you can not predict it anymore. It’s because of guys – I often throw it back to the ‘Pipe Bomb’ promo of CM Punk, being this really defining moment for professional wrestling because it was the first time these streams really crossed. Some of the things he was talking about he had mentioned Ring Of Honor, and then I look at what The Young Bucks have done.

“They’re legitimately not needing WWE. Not being a fan of where they work as much as a fan of themselves as a talent and as a unit. That attitude is kind of caught like wildfire, it has made it the most fun time to be a pro wrestler and a wrestling fan because legitimately anything can happen. I am a free agent. I haven’t signed with Ring Of Honor but I damn sure like, love the Honor brand and I really treasure the responsibility of being its world champion.”

His father, WWE Hall Of Famer Dusty Rhodes:

“The coolest thing about Dusty, my father, is not that he was Dusty, it’s how he was as a father. He’s the type of guy who if you are homeless and came up to him on the street and told him ‘I want to be an astronaut,’ he’d say ‘Cool, we’re gonna get you in astronaut school then, that’ll work. How old are you?’ ‘I’m 47’ ‘Yeah, that’s fine you can be an astronaut.’

“He just – me and my sister were talking about this, almost not logical in his goal setting. He’s ‘The American Dream’ it’s part of his name. Dream is just how he raised is so for me I was very positive it would be positive. I had no clue it would end up like this. I really didn’t, you couldn’t have seen any of this. When we were talking about doing Bound For Glory, ‘Okay, we’ll do Final Battle, and we’ll do Wrestle Kingdom too,’ and in the same year we had done WrestleMania. That’s my favorite statistic is to not rely on brands themselves but to just rely on me. I was positive it would be positive but I had not idea it would turn out like this.”

ROH’s upcoming Atlanta event being the same day as Mayweather vs. McGregor:

“Oh wow. Well, I think you’ll be able to catch both because if we know anything about professional boxing, they will go on deep into the evening. But I have always said this as growing up in the wrestling industry and it being part of my family, when people make that argument about mixed martial arts (MMA), professional boxing, professional sports vs. professional wrestling, I always tell them you can always bet on us because we aim to leave you better off than when we found you.

“There’s always – a show is never left with you lacking. We always want to fill you up and have you ready for the next one, whereas, on occasion, I don’t know if you – I’m a Mayweather fan but if you saw the last Mayweather fight or if you saw the Pacquiao fight at least, it’s like ‘We can wrap this up at any point guys.’ Not with Ring Of Honor, and that’s why I put my bet on them.”

Cody Rhodes Reacts To Kenny Omega Being Considered The Best In The World

Former WWE Superstar and current Ring Of Honor (ROH) World Champion Cody Rhodes recently did an interview with the International Business Times to talk about a number of professional wrestling topics, such as his amazing amount of success since leaving WWE, losing at the New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) G1 Special, and people considering NJPW star Kenny Omega to be the best wrestler in the world. Here are the highlights:

His amazing amount of success since leaving WWE:

“There’s that saying, ‘Act like you’ve been in the end zone before,’ but I hadn’t been in the end zone before. So it’s very surprising. It’s been one hell of a ride, and I’m aware that it’s kind of an abnormal amount of success outside of WWE. Winning the Ring of Honor World Title in less than a year and to headline those G1 Specials.

“I know my business, so I know that could fall out at any minute. There could be no one wanting to interview me. But right now, I’m trying to make it so that every day we get something special, and as ROH World Champion, I have the responsibility of captaining an entire ship. I’m looking forward to the possibilities there.”

Losing at the NJPW G1 Special:

“Today you gotta be a much better player than just a bad guy or a good guy. You gotta be a star. Those are the things my dad really harped on. Heel, babyface. He didn’t believe in it anymore. He just believed you’re a star or you’re on your way to being a star. And I had his voice in my head because I remember that fan rattled me a bit, and I tripped on my damn cape and I was like ‘Shake it off. Shake it off. You’re world champion. He’s the IWGP Heavyweight Champion. Just go for it.’ And it was a real fun night.”

Kenny Omega being considered the best wrestling in the world:

“Kenny currently has the distinction of being the best wrestler in the world, and his run is proving tons of evidence to support that. For a singles wrestler like myself, who’s the world champion, it pisses you off a little bit. But you can be pissed off and go about it the wrong way, or you can go about it the right way. And I try to go about this the right way. Kenny and I are Bullet Club, and I want to outperform him, which is a tall, tall order.

“But if I never go out there to give it a shot, then I’m not Bullet Club material in the first place. I think it’s the same with the Bucks. I think they love Kenny to death, but the concept of The Elite is not just a concept, it’s very real. Those three guys have each other’s backs, but if the Bucks go on last, they want to blow Kenny out of the water. They want to blow me out of the water. It’s not a negative at all. It’s a positive. It’s just a really fun, competitive environment in Bullet Club.”

Cody Rhodes On WWE Creative, Scripted Promos & If He Was Punished In WWE For Speaking Up

Cody Rhodes recently spoke to Metro and below are some of the highlights:

Your personality has really shined on the independent circuit, whereas in WWE it felt like sometimes you were stuck in a vacuum at times. What could have WWE done better for your character?

“I honestly think the more time I spend away from WWE the less it was WWE’s fault and the more it was my inability to go with my guts. There would have been a big difference if I had done that. And that would have meant saying no to a writer or correcting a few folks and maybe ruffling some feathers and stepping on some toes, but I can’t think of anything more important for a wrestler than to go with his gut.”

Specifically in backstage segments and in interviews, no matter what, if you’re not feeling it, you can’t say it. There was only a couple of incidents in my WWE career where what I said on the microphone was all me, and they were my most successful. It’s not a knock on WWE creative at all, they’re there to guide you and give you the bullet points of where it may be going, but they can’t script it. You can’t script wrestling.”

Did you ever speak up? The stories go that if you complain in WWE you get punished.

“I don’t recall at any point ever being punished for anything like that, but I do recall that when I did speak up for myself from time to time it didn’t make a difference. Essentially the answer I would get was thanks but no thanks. I think I developed a reputation as a complainer and that’s hard to escape. You don’t want to be a complainer, you want to be someone who says ‘I don’t like this but here’s my alternative.’

I don’t know, maybe because I’m Dusty’s kid and I have a creative mindset that he gifted me a little of, almost every idea I ever got I thought I wanted to do something different. I’ve told a couple of people this but I feel that I wish I’d played dumb a little bit more and just have fun and do what they say. My relationship with the creative team might have been better, because essentially if you’re telling them every week you want to do something else instead, you’re telling them they’re not good at their jobs. Nobody wants to hear that.”

People still have many complaints about WWE’s creativity – or more accurately, the lack of it. Where does the buck stop with this? Who should they be complaining to?

“WWE is so powerful in terms of their world presence and the talent they have on board, so I think what’s going to happen at some point is that they’re going to restructure all of this. There are some guys in WWE, Vince McMahon, Triple H, Michael Hayes, Arn Anderson and Mike Rotunda included, who should be writers but instead are producers. I would hope at some point they will consolidate all of that, because if you were to get some of these megaminds in a room, you could write out two years worth of TV and stick to the plan.

“Wrestling is not an episodic TV show. If you were to come into my office and say ‘hey I wrote 20 episodes of Friends and I want to be a WWE writer’, I’d say ‘that’s great but do you know who Lou Thesz is? Do you know who Bruno Sammartino is? Do you like wrestling?’ You’d be surprised at how many would say they’d never watched wrestling. That blows my mind, and if you were to shift the power to some of the greats in our business, you’d have a big difference.”

Rhodes also discussed his success on the independent wrestling scene, becoming ROH Champion and more in the interview. You can read the entire interview by clicking here.

Knockout Removed From Global Force Wrestling Roster

It would appear that Brandi Rhodes is gone from Global Force Wrestling.

The promotion recently updated its roster section on ImpactWrestling.com and she is no longer listed as an active Knockout. She is also not listed in the Alumni section since her profile was deleted altogether.

Rhodes has not addressed her status with Global Force Wrestling.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbICoDa-eOs&w=620&h=349]

Rhodes, who joined the promotion last September, was last seen on Impact Wrestling in April, competing in a Knockouts #1 Contender Gauntlet Battle Royal.

Rhodes is now wrestling for Ring of Honor’s Women of Honor Division. She made her ROH debut last Saturday at a television taping in Concord, North Carolina, where she teamed up with Sumie Sakai against Mandy Leon and Jenny Rose.

It was a memorable night for Rhodes since her husband, ROH World Champion “The American Nightmare” Cody, also wrestled on the show. She also paid tribute to the late Dusty Rhodes by wearing polka dots.

Cody Rhodes Talks About Planning His ‘Escape’ From WWE

Former WWE Intercontinental Champion and current Ring Of Honor (ROH) Heavyweight Champ Cody Rhodes recently did an interview with The Charlotte Observer to talk about a variety of professional wrestling topics. Rhodes talked about making preparations to leave WWE months before his departure, working New Japan Pro Wrestling’s (NJPW) G1 Special, and having a ‘lucky charm.’ Here are the highlights:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zP51oGqTjTo&t=7s

Making preparations to leave WWE months before his departure:

“I was just talking about this and it’s made the difference. When guys leave – whether they decide to leave or they’re forced out – there’s usually this period of time we see them around the world and they can ride that WWE wave and use it, and then it goes away. It loses its luster after a few months.

“I planned my escape for six months before I left. I loved WWE, but in the end I was unhappy. It was just like planning an escape from a maximum security prison. I’d released a list of potential opponents online so when the 90-day no-compete clause was up, I had matches booked on good faith. I thought about the follow-up.”

Working NJPW’s G1 Special:

“It definitely superseded New Japan’s expectations as far as the yearning for their product in the U.S. They weren’t expecting the turnout to be as strong as it was. I want them to hit all these markets – Chicago, Atlanta. It gave them confidence to see where they want to go next. It rattled me a bit because the moment I stepped on the stage, I went from being the hero in Lowell, Massachusetts (where he won the ROH title) to being booed off the stage. I see a guy wearing my shirt flipping me double birds. It rattled me in the best way.”

What his ‘lucky charm’ is:

“I have this little tiny Dusty Rhodes figure they make in Japan that people always give me in my bag. I set it next to the title and took a picture of it in my bag. That was my big goal in the industry. I wasn’t able to achieve that in his lifetime, but he always believed.”

Cody Rhodes Talks Possible Match With Daniel Bryan & Where He’d Like it to Take Place

Ring Of Honor (ROH) World Champion Cody Rhodes participated in a media call to promote New Japan Pro Wrestling’s (NJPW) upcoming G1 Special live from Long Beach, California. During the call, Rhodes was asked about the possibility of sharing the ring with former WWE World Heavyweight Champion (and current SmackDown Live General Manager) Daniel Bryan:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y14INrzBmNs

“Super speculative. I don’t know, I know Daniel just had a baby. Loves his wife. Loves the home life,” said Cody. “I never totally understood why Dan was put in a position to retire and you know, it’s not a conversation I’ve had with him. It’s a tough conversation. You know, if he wanted to, if there was a little pressure to do so, I really don’t know. But I know that what we do isn’t necessarily, doesn’t need to abide by the guidelines of perhaps say the NCAA. What we do there’s a little bit more Shakespeare to if you catch my drift.

Rhodes said he’d love to face Bryan under the ROH banner to prove that the promotion can sell out a major arena:

“I would love that match-up, I would welcome that match-up,” Cody explained. “I want to solidify my bet with those who thought Ring of Honor could not currently fill a 10,000 seat arena. I said we would do it with the talent we have in-house but I think they may be able to give me an exception if we were able to swing Daniel Bryan.”

“I would love to make it happen,” said Cody. “I would love to make it happen in Ring of Honor.”

Cody Rhodes: Wrestling Daniel Bryan Would Be “Major, Major Box Office”

On Monday Sports Illustrated published a new interview with Cody Rhodes. The American Nightmare spoke about winning the Ring of Honor World Championship this past weekend, his upcoming match against IWGP champion Kazuchika Okada and Daniel Bryan’s tweet about challenging him for the ROH World title next September if Cody is still champion by then.

Daniel Bryan, a former Ring of Honor World Champion himself, has stated in numerous recent interviews that he’s interested in wrestling again next year around the time his WWE contract expires — if he’s healthy enough. Bryan congratulated Cody on his first world title win and issued the following tongue-in-cheek challenge:

https://twitter.com/WWEDanielBryan/status/878765898349158400

Cody told Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated that Daniel Bryan’s tweet was probably not entirely serious, but he thinks they would do “major, major box office” if they ever did square off in the future.

“I don’t think it was a challenge, just fun,” said Rhodes. “Daniel Bryan remains one of my friends. Final Countdown would be a welcomed tune, even as a competitor. I have always looked up to Dan. It would be major, major box office for all involved.”

Daniel Bryan Trolls Fans, Teases Possible Run in Ring of Honor

Cody Rhodes won the Ring of Honor World Heavyweight Championship this past weekend against Christopher Daniels. After the event Smackdown GM Daniel Bryan took to Twitter and left the following message for the ROH Champ:

This caused a stir on social media with the WWE contracted star signalling his intention to return to the ring in the company that he helped build all those years ago. He later posted a short tweet stating #trollingforlife but with Bryan’s outspoken past there is a good chance that there could be more to this story….

Cody Rhodes on Embracing Role of Ending Christopher Daniels’ ROH Title Reign

Former WWE Superstar Cody Rhodes recently spoke with Crave Online to talk about the potential win of a world title bringing vindication to his family again, being comfortable in the role of ending Christopher Daniels’ Ring Of Honor (ROH) World Title reign, and the success of the Bullet Club. Check out the highlights below:

Winning a world title bringing back vindication to his family:

“It has been 31 years since Dusty [Rhodes] was world champion. In that time, my brother and myself didn’t win a world title. I don’t know if that eats at us or if we look at it differently. We all have our different journeys but the one word that comes up is…vindication. It’s not just vindication for me when I decided to leave WWE. It’s vindication for a lot more than that. I think since his death, people have seen the significance my dad had in wrestling.

“But there was this period of time when so many people made so much money that he put in the game. There was this period of time when people remembered it differently. I know that’s none of my business and I wasn’t around during that period but it builds a young man, this war, this ‘Rhodes vs. all’ mentality within me. That’s why Friday is so significant. If we can get it done, I just keep thinking of that word: vindication.”

Being comfortable in his role to end Christopher Daniels’ ROH Title reign:

“I like to think of Christopher Daniels as one of those who’s a great professional wrestler but I like to think of myself as one of those people that’s great at everything. I think Christopher Daniels’ first championship reign with ROH is about 20 years too late and I fully embrace the role that I’ve naturally been given here, as spoiler for that reign.”

The success of the Bullet Club:

“Being part of this movement; the Bullet Club movement, it’s unexpected. You have guys like [Karl] Anderson, [Luke] Gallows and [Finn] Balor and you see the foreground set and how they’ve lined up the playing field and then you have it now where it has grown and grown. It almost scares you to the level of its reach. It’s on shelves now in retail outlets next to WWE merchandise and it’s not within the WWE circle so that’s the biggest indicator of its success.”

Cody Rhodes On If He Wants To Return To WWE, Advice He Received From Shawn Michaels

Cody Rhodes was recently interviewed by Channel Guide Magazine. Here are some highlights from the interview:

If he wants to return to WWE:

“I don’t want to sound negative but being part of history right now and this new era and new boom. I didn’t get that while in WWE. So currently there is no incentive for me to return to WWE. I’m making more money than I was with WWE. I’ve been in some unbelievable matchups. Two are coming up. I love WWE. Just currently there is no incentive. There are some things I would love to be a part of. I would love to be part of the Dusty tag team tournament. At the same time I don’t think I’m playing a revenge song here. I don’t think I’m ready to move out of the spot of where I’m at.”

Advice he received from Shawn Michaels:

“Shawn Michaels told me once that when someone asked, ‘Hey, how was my match?’ He answered them, but then said to me, ‘You know how your match was when you walk through the curtain. You know if it was awesome or if it wasn’t. You know because of how the audience reacted.’ It’s more about asking what you could have done differently. It’s made me really happy to play my music, my way.”

Being thankful for his time in WWE:

“They put me in the position I am in right now,” Rhodes said. “If they had held me back they wouldn’t have granted me my release. They allowed me to go in the wild and do what I’m doing now. My wife [Brandi] didn’t have the best WWE experience, but she always says that she is very thankful for having been there because she met her husband. For me, I met my wife, was in two singles matches at WrestleMania. I even got to rebrand the Intercontinental title. I did it all in the early parts of my career. It’s on record how I feel things should have gone in the end, but I don’t want to live in the past. You got to move forward.”

Rhodes also discussed the Bullet Club, Kenny Omega and other wrestling topics in the interview. You can check out the entire interview by clicking here.

WCPW Celebrates 1st Anniversary, Releases ‘Behind the Scenes’ Video

What Culture Pro Wrestling (WCPW) are celebrating their first anniversary this week. The YouTube based company has had an impressive start in the industry, having produced a number of high profile Pay Per View events including the likes of Kurt Angle, Alberto El Patron, Drew McIntyre, Rey Mysterio and Cody Rhodes.

Recent events concerning YouTube’s ‘Adpocalypse’ has seen WCPW in the news for the wrong reasons. Pro Wrestling is now viewed by the streaming service as ‘non-advertiser friendly’ and WCPW has been struggling to earn ad revenue since the change to YouTube’s policy.

Check out the video below for some interesting tidbits from WCPW’s first year in existence.

Jim Ross Reacts to Cody Rhodes vs. Okada at NJPW G1 US Special

As we’ve previously noted, former WWE Intercontinental Champion Cody Rhodes is set to take on Kazuchika Okada at New Japan Pro Wrestling’s (NJPW) G1 US Special on July 1st. WWE Hall Of Famer Jim Ross was recently interviewed on Busted Open Radio to talk about a variety of pro wrestling topics, and offered his thoughts on the matchup between Rhodes and Okada, which he calls ‘good booking’:

“I think it’s a good booking. Cody needs this match. He needs to show everybody exactly where he is since leaving the WWE, because I believe, that eventually, Cody will make a triumphant return to WWE, [as] a much better performer and business man than he was when he left. And he will make a major impact. But right now it’s a great place to see where he is in that evolution. Whether I’m right or I’m wrong, this is a big match for him, and of course, Okada got that pressure that he seemingly now has to have a five star like match everyone outing and that’s damn hard to do.”

Cody Rhodes is Reportedly Done Working With Impact Wrestling

Last year, former WWE Intercontinental Champion Cody Rhodes made the decision to walk away from the company citing creative differences and a displeasure with his then-role on the roster dubbing his Stardust gimmick. He has since solidified himself as one of the biggest names in the sport and the most sought after free agent in professional wrestling.

Rhodes has done work for Impact Wrestling, Ring Of Honor, and New Japan Pro Wrestling since his departure, but according to his wife Brandi, he’s done working for Jeff Jarrett and company:

Rhodes made his Impact debut back in October of last year when he signed a non-exclusive deal with the company and made his debut at Bound for Glory. He last competed on Impact Wrestling Television back in March where he lost to Moose in an Impact Grand Championship match.

During a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, Rhodes revealed that he’s in the process of looking for a permanent home after jumping from promotion to promotion the past year (quotes via CBS Sports):

“I guess I spoke too soon.” Rhodes said. “It’s probably not time to make a decision. But if I did make a decision, it’s just a matter of trust. There’s so little trust in pro wrestling. So little. And there should be. We all love this thing and want to put on the best show and fill all of the seats in the house. But it’s trust and being around people in the office that I trust. I trust every guy in the locker room for the most part. But it’s finding that top brass in most companies that I know, if I put my name on the dotted line, that I’ll be taken care of. Honestly, any offer that came my way I haven’t really looked at. My date book is still pretty deep — all the way through September. It goes everywhere. We’ll probably revisit it then.”
