Cody Rhodes: NXT Is Doing A Great Service To The Wrestling Business

Cody Rhodes was recently a guest on the Wrestling With Wreget podcast where he discussed his experiences in the wrestling business since leaving WWE. Rhodes talked about the reputation that indie wrestling has as being a “lesser” product, but says that his experience on the indie scene has been fulfilling.

“I have yet to have a lesser experience,” Rhodes said of working with independent wrestling promotions. “I know [bad experiences] might happen, but all the shows I’ve been a part of so far, including tonight, have had a not-indie feel about them. They have a local feel about them. […] So for me I have yet to have an ‘indie experience’, they’ve all been pretty wonderful. Crowds of 800 to 1,000 end up sounding like 18,000. I haven’t, none of them have felt indie yet.”

Rhodes credits NXT with exposing the WWE audience to talent from the independent wrestling scene. Cody says that NXT did a “great service to the business” by spotlighting indie superstars. Rhodes credits NXT with helping spark new interest in indie wrestling and sending people “in the thousands” to independent shows.

You can listen to the full interview here, where Rhodes also speaks on his brief time in TNA, saying it was a positive experience.

Cody Rhodes Talks About The Greatness Of NXT Star Tye Dillinger

Former WWE Superstar (and Global Force NEX*GEN Champion) Cody Rhodes recently appeared on Colt Cabana’s Art of Wrestling podcast and had strong praise for NXT star Tye Dillinger.  Cody called him the “Greatest human being alive” and can’t believe he’s still in ‘developmental.’

After a rocky departure from WWE earlier this year, Cody is not on the best terms with thec company. The strained relationship has led Cody to hold back on his public endorsements of Tye Dillinger. “I’m afraid of… all the time I want to tweet stuff about Tye Dillinger and I’m afraid if I do, someone will be like, because I’m not in the best graces with the office currently, I’m afraid someone will be like, because of my love of him,” Rhodes said.

How Dusty Rhodes would write that Dillinger is ready for the main roster?

Cabana asked how Dusty Rhodes would have evaluated Tye Dillinger and gotten him ready for the main roster. “If a guy already had it, he didn’t spend a lot of time on them,” Cody said. “Daniel Bryan is a great example. Barely kind of blew Dan off too. But in his reports, wrote, ‘this guy’s ready – what can I do?’ that’s the Tye Dillinger report from his fifth year in developmental. And, literally, that was what my dad always wrote about Tye, ‘what is he still doing here?’ … The mystery of Tye. It’s a mystery. I think the only way to fix it is to every time you go to these events, like fans who go to NXT events, you need to give him everything because he’ll give it back, man.

Cody Rhodes Explains What Influenced His Stardust Character

Former WWE star Cody Rhodes recently did a promotional interview for his appearance on The CW’s Arrow where he spoke at-length about his former Stardust character. Rhodes left WWE back in May due to creative differences after reportedly “pleading” with the creative team for months to end the Stardust character.

“I think for me, internally, the entire thing was a comic book,” Rhodes said of his approach to playing Stardust. “In terms of psychologically thinking about it, I approached it like a symbiote, like Venom, taking over my initial persona. Especially since I’d wrestled for the prior eight years as myself and here was this drastic departure. I was treating it like this symbiote thing. That’s what I would say to myself in my head.”

The second-generation wrestler says that he also pulled on old Batman characters for inspiration. Rhodes had previously expressed disappointment that WWE fans would remember him as Stardust rather than for what he had done before being given that character.

“Then performance-wise, people know I was just stealing flat out from Frank Gorshin and Jim Carrey’s Riddlers,” Rhodes told IGN. I’d watch the scene where he blew up the Batcave and study how he moved around and just plucked some of that out in certain ways. In my mind, it was a mash-up of different comic book influences. I loved the idea that I had an alter-ego but that my true identity was very well known and very much on the surface. I was the only one who didn’t know who Stardust really was. So it was very much tied to comics. Everything I’ve done. I did a whole run where I’d wear a face mask when I was on SmackDown and that was based on Dr. Doom. Comics and me go way back.”

Since leaving WWE, Rhodes has performed for TNA and Ring of Honor under variations his real name. You can read his entire interview on IGN.com.

Cody Rhodes On Keeping “Hush” Over His Last Name, The NXT Dusty Classic, TNA Future, More

Cody Rhodes just spoke with Live Audio Wrestling on a variety of topics, seen below in the highlights they provided. You can find the full interview by clicking here.

Leaving WWE and being a “true independent contractor”:

Cody: “Yeah, I think that word independent contractor is so unique and I know people have examined it as it relates to WWE a lot but it’s nice to see it honest, the word independent contractor. I don’t want to go into anybody’s house and wreck shop or anything like that. I only want to make their product better and maybe their product will make me better so it is really – to be able to go anywhere and represent various brands, to see an independent contractor actually be honest is a huge kick”.

Making your own schedule:

Cody: “That is the moment they don’t tell you about, I’m going to hit various indies up and I’m going to do this whole post-WWE tour. That’s the part people don’t tell you, you’re going to be in charge of promotion, you’re going to be in charge of so much that’s involved. You’re basically saying you’re your own brand and it actually takes true meaning when you are in control of everything like the simplest things like what photos, what merch you had and what the graphics are going to look like and how you are going to go about promoting the shows. I get the biggest kick out of that because my dad was a promoter. I mean, he was a wrestler too obviously but he was a promoter and the big events and the sizzle behind the substance was one of the things he was really good at doing in acquiring and the cross promotion and all that so for me to take a stab at it, I don’t know if you can tell in my voice but has really been the happiest time of my life and I’m glad it’s going successfully.”

Getting to showcase talents outside WWE, limitations of Stardust character:

Cody: “Yeah, I think one of the things that was so disappointing for me at the end of the time in WWE was simply that people had forgot what I was doing prior to Stardust because yeah, Stardust had its purpose and such but I was doing all this wonderful stuff as Cody Rhodes, specifically on the Smackdown brand years before and even when I tagged with Dustin when it started to kind of dwindle down. Even then I was able to showcase and I was able to put out so when wrestling is a really fickle animal, it’s very much what have you done for me lately and because of the position I was in, I hadn’t done much lately. So, for people to forget for new audience members, for kids who were coming to WWE to not know, that sucked. That just sucked. The hardcore fans, they’re there for you and they remember but man, if you’re a kid, to not know who Cody is but to know who Stardust is was one of those moments where I was like okay, we need to change the course of this ship, we need to change the direction. There are times where I really enjoyed doing Stardust but more particularly for the reason I’m telling you than if Stardust was going to re-write my history, then that was definitely not my plan and that’s why it’s cool to go on my own terms and try to fix a little bit of it.”

Cody: “Whenever you get to paint your face or wear a mask or be a bit more of a colorful entity on television, that’s fun. Yeah, all the stuff that leads up to it might be stressful, all that backlog I just gave you about my mental state, that can be stressful. However, when you’re out there that’s performance, that’s not stressful, that’s your moment in the sun. So, as Stardust, as Cody, as whomever, whenever you’re in the ring it’s still always great, whenever your music hits and from bell to bell, it really still and should always be for any wrestler still great. There’s plenty of times I enjoyed Stardust.”

Going to TNA:

Cody: “I really wanted to get certain things done like we’re talking about on the list and a couple of guys are TNA stars that were on the list, Mike Bennett, Moose particularly. So, it was a matter of both parties came together at the same time and I was really happy to do that because you see so much negativity about TNA which is unrelated to the in-ring product, it’s related to the business element. Who’s suing who and who owns what and I don’t really give a damn, there are still a lot of really great wrestlers. Some who are ex-WWE, some who are WWE bound, some worldwide stars and I was happy. My experience there was gleaming from the moment I went to Nashville to film my bumper, my teaser for coming to the last taping I was part of. It was very much a first class operation so whatever goes on behind the scenes must be a madhouse because I didn’t see any of that, I had really great interactions with both Billy and Dixie and was really happy to be there. It was short-term but because of the tapings they do, really everything is short term until the next set of tapings. If the ship continues to sail in the direction it was sailing when I was there, there’s no doubt I’ll be back and be happy as hell to be back.”

Concerns over the state of TNA:

Cody: “This is going to sound like such a stiff upper-lip answer but I’m not doing it for the money. You should never do anything you feel good at for free and I am certainly will expect to be paid but it doesn’t – this wasn’t for the money, this was more for the fun. This was more for the fact that I had seen Impact on Pop sitting at home and I thought, man this is a wonderful production here. It’s always better to be on TV than not be on TV so it doesn’t worry me really at all. If any of the information was given to me as it comes about what’s going on day to day, it might stress me a little bit but I have kind of been going on a handshake deal from place to place and my experience, like I said with them was totally gleaming. Billy, thumbs up, Dixie, thumbs up so it doesn’t worry me.”

Returning to the WWE eventually:

Cody: “I don’t know, I don’t think the door to WWE ever closes. I’m always been told that the revolving door – you know, it’s a tricky question because there were a lot of genuinely large issues for me personally that it would be hypocritical for me to just go back, they would need to be fixed. We don’t have to get into all of those but that’s something I’ve wrestled with, whenever somebody, anybody says would you ever go back – the fans dictate what we do to begin with so if the fans wanted me back, that’s not something I would not consider but I made all my decisions and they were really tough decisions for the reasons given so the last thing you want to do is be a huge hypocrite and show back up unless there was a damn good reason. With that said, there’s plenty of good reasons. They do a really good job of honouring my father and it is strange, kind of like how we began the conversation, it is strange to be on the outside of that. It’s not just strange for me, it’s strange for them. Believe me, there’s various texts back and forth about it, that’s why there’s no reason to say anything negative right now about my name because this month, I look at it like this is about my dad, the tag tournament and these youngsters, they’re not youngsters, some of them might be older than me. These NXT talent, these stars going for the Dusty Classic and that’s what needs to take the focus. That’s kind of why I have been hush-hush about the name.”

If he was asked to hand out trophy at Dusty Classic Finals:

Cody: “I told them Truth can hand out the trophy this year – no I didn’t (laughs). I think this year is probably a really tough sell but I definitely don’t want people to think that’s because I don’t love my dad more than anything on earth. I think this year I will probably hand over my responsibilities as such to Dustin and maybe his daughter Dakota. They currently have a lot better of a situation with themselves in WWE than myself but again, that night has nothing to do with me or WWE, really. It has everything to do with young guys getting their shot and Dusty Rhodes in general so I don’t know. I haven’t been reached out to yet so if I was, I definitely would not just flat out say no.”

Details On Cody Rhodes In TNA, What’s Next For Him

Cody Rhodes is scheduled to make his TNA debut this Sunday at Bound For Glory, assuming TNA can secure funding in time.

TNA hasn’t yet announced what Cody will be doing at the show, but he’s stated that he’d like for her and his wife Brandi to work with  Mike Bennett & Maria Kanellis. The 4 of them will most likely be working together at Bound For Glory and next week’s Impact Wrestling tapings, which are also up in the air pending additional funding.

While Brandi Rhodes has joined TNA and will be wrestling for the Knockouts division for the foreseable future, Cody is only scheduled to work for TNA over the next week through this upcoming round of television tapings.  Cody will then move on to Ring of Honor. He’s scheduled to wrestle at December’s Final Battle PPV and will be working for ROH through May 2017.

Cody is the first person to work WrestleMania, Bound for Glory and Final Battle in a calendar year, which is a pretty impressive feat.

IMPACT WRESTLING Signs Cody!

Rumors were buzzing last Friday as TMZ Sports announced that Brandi Rhodes, a former In-Ring Announcer, would be joining the IMPACT Wrestling Knockouts Roster. On Monday, TNA Management confirmed those rumors to be true.

So it was official, Brandi Rhodes would be joining the IMPACT Wrestling team, but there was much speculation about her husband, Cody.

On Thursday, we saw a tease of who would be making their way to IMPACT. The world went wild with guesses and possibilities!

But during Thursday night’s IMPACT on POP, we got confirmation. Cody is coming to IMPACT. And he’ll be making his arrival at Bound For Glory on October 2.

A game-changer to say the least. But what does this mean? What will happen when Cody makes his presence felt at Bound For Glory? And who does he have his eye on?

So many unanswered questions and so much to learn in the future. Being at Bound For Glory 2016, will be one of the best decisions that you will make all year. Purchase your VIP Package Today to be able to witness the Glory up front and honest at Bound For Glory.

TNA Teasing Cody Rhodes’ Debut

The CW network has released a new extended trailer for the upcoming season of Arrow, the hit super hero show starring SummerSlam 2015 celebrity competitor Stephen Amell. Former WWE Superstar Cody Rhodes will have a guest role on the upcoming season, portraying a villain out to destroy Amell’s character.

Back in July at the Heroes & Villains Fan Fest, Stephen Amell had this to say about Cody’s involvement in the upcoming season:

“I’m so fired up for this guy; he and I haven’t really had much of a chance to talk about it but we’ve been friends for a little over a year now. I know that Cody has really wanted to get into the acting business. He went to LA, he read for a part, and his deal closed yesterday and the dude is going to be on Arrow and I’m so fired up.”

Arrow: Season 5 premieres on Wednesday, October 5 at 8/7c on The CW.

Brandi Rhodes Joins Impact Wrestling

Brandi Rhodes has signed with TNA Impact Wrestling, according to TMZ.

The former WWE ring announcer and wife of Cody Rhodes is joining the Knockouts division and will be trading in the microphone for wrestling gear. No

word yet on when Brandi Rhodes will make her Impact Wrestling debut, but you can be sure husband Cody Rhodes won’t be far behind.  It’s been widely reported that Cody Rhodes plans to wrestle for both TNA and Ring of Honor in the near future. Whether or not he’ll be able to use the Cody Rhodes name is another story. Either way, Brandi Rhodes and eventually Cody are great acquisitions for Impact Wrestling.

Cody Rhodes Comments On TNA & ROH Rumors

During an appearance on the Two Man Power Trip podcast, Cody Rhodes commented on rumors that he and his wife Brandi are planning to work for TNA and Ring of Honor in the coming months.

“I think rumors and speculation are wonderful because we all love them, we are the ones who read and perpetuate them in pro wrestling,” he said. “That means the wrestlers and the fans, so we are equally guilty. I don’t like beating over the head that we are some, super happy married couple (because) that’s obvious and very much on the surface but I also want fans to see what she (Brandi) can do. So, if I am able to help that I am certainly going to help that because I think that folks will be impressed. I think as far as some of the rumors as of late about branching out into different promotions and stuff like that, a lot of that is just rumor. But here is a good way to look at that. If I put your name on the list, I intend to make that happen. If you are in a company and I have to come into that company to make that match happen, I have no issue doing that. Not in the slightest. That is only good for the fans and the brand and myself.”

“As far as Brandi and I being a package deal, that is fun (you are kind of opening my eyes to it as we are talking) because it is all new to me too. That is fun because her and I love each other and it is cool that we are not pretending. I got a huge kick out of her throwing her shoes at Marty Scrull at the “Battle of Los Angeles” or slapping him and just her overall because she’s been around Dusty, she’s been around me, she knows these little things about wrestling that it takes other people FOREVER to figure out and pickup and I like seeing that savvy that she has about herself, I really enjoy it.

Cody Rhodes Updates: NJPW & TNA Matches, Usage Of The Rhodes Name

Not only Cody Rhodes working for TNA and ROH this year, he’s headed to Japan to work at least one date – a match with NJPW star Katsuyori Shibata. Cody has also received indy offers to work with TNA star Aron Rex (Damien Sandow) due to their past in WWE, but he’s currently focused on working with wrestlers he’s never worked with before. Cody is still looking to work with names on “The List” he published several months back but he is not looking to sign with any promotion.

There’s still no word on when Cody will start with TNA but he starts working multiple ROH dates in December. As noted, Rhodes is planning on working for both promotions without a contract for either. He would be the first wrestler to pull that off. In ROH, he’s hoping to work with Adam Cole while he’s interested in working a program with wife Brandi against Mike Bennett and Maria Kanellis in TNA. Rhodes and Bennett recently worked together for Northeast Wrestling in New York.

Cody is also focused on trying to make it as a TV actor. He told Dave Meltzer at PWG’s Battle of Los Angeles last weekend that he hopes the recent “Arrow” role he filmed will turn into a recurring role.

While Cody is planning on working both ROH and TNA TV, he will not be able to use the Rhodes name at this point. He continues to have talks with WWE, so that could change. The situation is that Cody has worked for WWE since the start of his career and never used the name anywhere else before that. On the other hand, the Rhodes name goes back 50 years in pro wrestling, long before WWE ever used it.

Cody Rhodes Headed To TNA

Cody Rhodes is reportedly in talks with TNA about working for the promotion in the near future. Rhodes spoke with Dave Meltzer at this weekend’s PWG Battle of Los Angeles shows and revealed that a deal is already in place.

Rhodes has plans to wrestle in TNA and Ring of Honor, but does not plan to sign exclusive deals with either. Cody Rhodes recently worked against Mike Bennett for Northeast Wrestling. Cody Rhodes will work a program against Bennett in TNA, with Cody’s wife Brandi (former WWE ring announcer Eden) playing off Bennett’s wife, TNA Knockouts champion Maria Kanellis.

One issue to watch is whether or not Cody Rhodes is able to use that name in TNA. He’s been using it on the independent scene, but working television is a completely different situation. WWE owns the rights to the name, despite Dusty Rhodes using the name long before he wrestled for Vince. Guys like CM Punk were able to use their WWE names elsewhere because they used it elsewhere prior to working for WWE. Cody commented on the situation back in July after word got out that WWE owns the Cody Rhodes name.

Cody Rhodes has certainly been keeping busy, working against Kurt Angle (Video) and competing at PWG’s Battle For Los Angeles event over the past several weeks. On Monday morning he tweeted this list of his schedule for this coming week:

ESPN Personality Insults Kevin Owens’ Son, Cody Rhodes & Jonathan Coachman Respond

ESPN personality Amin Elhassan is getting a lot of negative feedback on social media after a series of tweets about Kevin Owens’ 8-year-old son Owen. Earlier this week, KO’ wife posted a video on Instagram showing their son’s reaction to him winning the WWE Universal Championship on RAW. It was a nice moment of a child being genuinely proud of his father achieving the biggest moment of his career. Elhassan saw the video and decided to take a dig at pro wrestling being ‘entertainment.’

This got wrestling fans on Twitter riled up, with several of them pointing out to Elhassan that Kevin Owens’ son is autistic. In response to somebody telling Elhassan, “he’s autistic,” he replied:

After it was clarified that Kevin Owens son was autistic (which really has nothing to do with mocking a child for being proud of his father), Elhassan continued:

Cody Rhodes caught wind of the exchange and told WWE they should have nothing to do with an organization that employs somebody who insults a child. He told them to stop working with TMZ after the tabloid site published the audio of his mother calling 911 when his father Dusty was dying.

ESPN’s Jonathan Coachman chimed in, putting Elhassan in his place and complimenting Kevin Owens.

WWE RAW General Manager Mick Foley says an apology is in order.

Discussion: Is this a big fuss over nothing or was it a bad move for Amin Elhassan to say the things he did?

Cody Rhodes vs. Kurt Angle Results & Video

Former WWE Superstars Cody Rhodes and Kurt Angle squared off at Sunday night’s NEW “Wrestling Under The Stars” event in Wappingers Falls, New York. Rhodes defeated Angle via pinfall after blocking an Olympic Slam and hitting his Crossrhodes finisher. Here’s the video of the final moments:

https://twitter.com/ProWrestlingEsp/status/769906553138864128

Rhodes and Angle are scheduled to wrestle each other once against at WCPW’s October 8th event from Manchester, England.

Other notable matches at last night’s show included Jerry Lawler defeating the Brooklyn Brawler, Matt Hardy (with Reby Sky, Baby Maxell and Senor Benjamin) defeating Sami Callihan and Jeff Hardy defeating Jushin Liger with a swanton in the match of the night. Former WWE Superstar Ryback also did a run-in during a match between Vik Dalishus and Hale Collins.

Cody Rhodes Talks About Life After WWE, Dusty Wanting Him To Leave Back In 2012

Former WWE Superstar Cody Rhodes called into Busted Open this week with Doug Mortman and Larry Dallas to discuss his WWE departure, working on the independent scene, souring on the Stardust gimmick and living life with a “What would Dusty do?” attitude. Here are the highlights of what he said about:

If he was scared to finally leave WWE:

“So, little-known fact, I had kind of planned for some time that I would be leaving. My father actually wanted me to ask for my release after WrestleMania 28 in Miami. I remember him telling me and it took me, gosh, five years to follow his advice. Yeah, I’d say it’s scary, but maybe it’s not scary at all now that I think about it. Just because I know what I’m capable of doing and I know what I’m capable of not. I didn’t want to be delusional about it. I was very familiar with my own skill-set and I wasn’t able to put it on display where I was at, so why stay? Why stay when there are these opportunities. I didn’t get the opportunity to wrestle Kurt Angle in WWE; I got to wrestle Kurt Angle in Northeast Wrestling and not only Kurt Angle, Mike Bennett – the shining star of TNA, the ‘Miracle’ Mike Bennett – the night before. And then Sunday, Sami Callihan, who is just building a massive brand for himself all without the machine. You mention Brian Anthony, who’s kind of the young guy on the totem pole – well, that’s the one you have to look out for – and Ricky Steamboat’s involved with those matches. Those matches weren’t happening for me in WWE, so why stay?”

Not wanting to stay in WWE just for the money:

“I’m rich already. I don’t need the money (laughing). I worked for them for ten years and they paid me really, really well. I absolutely appreciate what you’re saying because there are those who stay with the mentality… the ‘pin me, pay me’ mentality. That don’t work for me, bud. This was never about the money. It was about those moments – you know, I’m from a wrestling family so I grew up wanting to have moments like I saw my father have and if I can’t chase those, then I’m not doing the right job. That connection he had as a performer with the fan – the real, authentic connection – even when you only get that in fleeting situations, it’s the best feeling in the world for a performer. So it made it easy for me.”

Wanting to return to being Cody Rhodes after Dusty’s passing:

“It worked…when the fans started chanting ‘Cody’ and I always thought, okay, so they’re chanting ‘Cody’, it gets under the skin of Stardust. Stardust is like this symbiote that got into the blood of the original Cody Rhodes and the fans remember, so someone’s going to knock the Stardust out of Cody, essentially. I always thought they went hand-in-hand so I thought, okay, it’s time for me to move on. The fans are ready, they’re the ones chanting it, and – especially after my Dad’s passing – it’s almost a little awkward for them to watch this character portrayal. This method acting, kind of – it’s awkward to them. They know who I am. They know what I’ve been through. I didn’t feel like I was saddled with it until my Dad’s passing and then it just seemed like just no one was hearing what I was hearing as far as the fans wanting me to come back as Cody. And it’s real easy for a talent to become kind of disillusioned like, ‘Oh, well, they want it. They want it. Hear ‘em?’ and sometimes it’s not the fans that people listen to the most and that’s when things don’t go well. In this case, though, it all led to where I am now so no harm, no foul.”

Keeping a promise to his father to never use his passing in storyline:

“Here’s the issue: I didn’t want to be anything after my Dad’s passing. I didn’t want to be Stardust, but I didn’t want to be Cody Rhodes either, because – it’s a very long story that I shared with my buddy the other night and some people know this. My Dad despised the angle between – I want to say it was Rey Mysterio and Randy Orton, where they mentioned Eddie Guerrero and they mentioned his passing and they used it as a vessel. A lot of people said, ‘Oh, well, Eddie would love this.’ He might have, but I never, ever, ever will forget – my Dad and I were watching Raw at the time. My Dad said, ‘Do not let anyone ever say I would’ve loved something.’ And he was just talking about, in general, for when the day comes that he’s not around and that stuck with me forever. I remember he went on a whole tirade that night. He was like, ‘How do they know for sure?’ and he was one of those who I had to beg him to come back for Battleground. I had to beg him to come back for anything. He really wanted his body of work to stand on its own and speak for itself. So when he passed, no one presented me with the kind of option of, hey, let me rally the flag and do it for the family. But I personally wouldn’t have been comfortable doing it because I had built my previous nine, ten years there on trying to be anything, but Dusty’s son so it would be cheap, it would be hollow for me to have done it then. Would it have worked? Probably, but I didn’t want to do that because I love my Dad too much to bring his name up on TV and say I’m doing it for him when the last nine, ten years of my career, I had been doing it for me, you know?”

The void left by Dusty’s passing and the personal nature of it fans don’t seem to grasp:

“It’s Dusty Rhodes, man. He’s one of the Mount Rushmore of professional wrestling and if you disagree, I would tell you to look into what he did for cable television. Without Dusty and without Vince going at each other in the 1980’s, the advent of cable and pay-per-view would not have happened the way it happened. So I always consider him from both a biased family member, but also from an objective wrestling fan standpoint, I consider him one of wrestling’s Mount Rushmore. It’s a void that – I don’t think wrestling fans have had to deal with a loss like this ever. There have been some terrible and tragic losses, but with Dusty, it’s been really unique in how it’s been handled. I don’t know how many times I meet folks and, for whatever reason they think I want to hear this, but they say, ‘I was so sad when your Dad passed away’ and I’m always thinking, you know, no kidding, so was I. It was my Dad. That’s like the number one thing fans say to me in the airport – ‘I’m sorry about your father’ – and I’m like, ‘Well, that’s nice. Thank you, thank you so much, but so am I.’ My mom noticed this because she went to the NWA Legends Fanfest. A lot of people like to tell us how awful losing Dusty was and, as much as we appreciate that, I think people forget I didn’t just lose the ‘American Dream’, the character you knew on television. That was my father. Dusty was semi-retired when I was growing up. He was there for everything I ever did. I caught Dusty taking a picture of me and Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania in Atlanta behind our backs, standing together before my match. He became a really big fan of mine and that’s a different loss than just losing someone you’re familiar with on television, but I do love all the love that surrounds the Dream.”
