  • Adam Pearce Speaks On Seven Levels Of Hate Documentary, Politics In Wrestling & More

The following are highlights from a recent interview with Adam Pearce:

On when he got the idea that he wanted to do a documentary on the Seven Levels Of Hate matches with Colt Cabana: I would say about halfway through. We knew going through the matches themselves that Cabana and I were doing something that was special in terms of the wrestling itself. Just by the feedback and the buzz we had wrapped around the thing. and then once the dramatics, if you will, began to kick in behind the scenes and things were happening that I knew were going to impact what we were doing, I thought it was a good idea to sit down and make sure we were able to document this. People were asking questions and wanting to have answers to things that we weren’t in position to tell at that point. Here we are know, almost a year removed from it, and I wanted to make sure I could tell it as completely as I could.

On the politics that got involved during the series: Things happened and it took away from it for all the wrong reasons. Again, I get it and having been in the bubble for so long you’re right there on top of it. People have become emotional attached to whatever issue they’re dealing with and I understand all of that. At the end of the day, it comes down to business. Bottom line is professional wrestling is a business. It is designed and made available to us to make money. And I understand all of the other things that people are attracted to the business about and for and the notoriety and the spotlight but at the end of the day, you want to do the best thing to put money in the coffers. And I certainly think we were on the right track — and when I say me I mean me and Colt Cabana — and obviously there was an opposition to that and it’s pretty well documented in the movie.

On how mentally tough the wrestling business can be: You don’t think about that when you get into it. And then here I am coming up quickly on 18 1/2 years and it would be comical if it wasn’t so sad. In a lot of ways it’s pathetic because on the independent level we’re not talking about millions of dollars. We’re talking about, the lucky ones, the ones who are able to make a living on the independents and I consider myself lucky enough to be part of that group, we’re still not talking about seven figures annually. We’re talking about relatively modest amounts of money. No one is getting rich off of what we’re doing and a lot of it seems foolish off as a result of that. And I can see if we’re talking big money deals and there’s a lot riding on things and some cases there are but for the most part we’re talking about ego. Ego. Ego ego ego. It’s terrible.

On his current relationship with the NWA: I don’t have one. And I think on a number of different levels that’s sad. Of course, there’s a number of people still involved with the brand that I know. I’m a big fan of their champion now Rob Conway. I think he’s a hell of a person first and foremost, a great wrestling and a great choice to be champion. I wish he was being allowed to do more with that belt. I think the way he travels and gets around he could be doing similar things with it that I did. I don’t get the sense that they’re interested in any type of business with me and frankly, you know, I think we spelled it out pretty clearly in the DVD how we all feel.

  • Cabana Speaks – “There’s A Lot Of People That Don’t Get Me”

Colt Cabana joined Live Audio Wrestling this past Sunday night for 40-minute chat discussing a variety of topics including the success of the ‘Art of Wrestling’, his recent tour with Pro Wrestling NOAH, working without a national platform and a more. The full interview is available here. Highlights are as follows:

Podcast success and comparisons to comedian Marc Meron: “I had been fired by WWE, I was watching my career go on a down slope. I didn’t know how much longer the buzz of, “Scotty Goldman’s back on the Indys now,” or Colt Cabana, and so in the same way, it’s very parallel. I saw what he was doing, and I saw the big buzz of the podcast comedy world, and I know that wrestling is always way behind. I pitched the idea to do my podcast for WWE, and they’re just like, “What? I don’t get it.” I’ll continue to do it myself, I’ll continue to have my fans. Everything’s great, fans are coming out to shows, they’re coming to meet me, I’m talking to them for an hour every week. It’s great.”

The ‘hidden’ personalities that have come out on his show: I always said that the problem with WWE is they don’t get to know their talent well enough. When you know somebody really well, that’s when you can write for somebody, and that’s when you can find their strengths and weaknesses. I didn’t even work hands-on with Paul Heyman, but he’s like a god when it comes to finding strengths and weaknesses. You could tell in that whole ECW product, and even the stuff he wrote in OVW. Unfortunately, Triple H, John Laurinaitis, they don’t know their guy. That’s the beauty of what I can do as a wrestler to help other wrestler, I can help these guys shine. I’ve seen Cliff Compton as a prime example, he’s one of the funniest guys I know. He’s a born entertainer, and you can tell by the podcast, you can tell by anything he does. He’s ready to make anybody money, including himself.

Working with Pro Wrestling NOAH: “For some reason, they brought me over, and I had to recognize what that reason was. That was just to be me, the character, the outgoing, the fun-loving, comedic Colt Cabana. My wrestling always speaks for itself, it’s not like I’m not a skilled professional wrestler, but I think when I bring the whole character, that’s when people really seem to enjoy what’s going on. I made a conscious decision just to be me. We didn’t speak the same language, I don’t speak any Japanese, but the language of comedy was there. With a body movement, or a face movement, or just a sound effect, I would have those Japanese fans laughing. It spoke a lot, and it really instilled a lot of, what I’m doing is right and I’m good at what I’m doing, because I’m able to make these people laugh and I’m able to entertain them.”

Working outside of the major national promotions: “I was willing to take this huge pay cut to be one of the bottom barrel of the WWE guys, just because I have some crazy dream, or I wanna right some wrong of what I did in the past, or I want the ability to show millions instead of hundreds of thousands of people what I’m all about. I think (Shawn) Daivari put it best to me, he’s like, “People either get you or they don’t get you.” There’s a lot of people that don’t get me, and I think that’s just some of the older generation, they don’t get what I’m about. But I do have a lot of people that get me, and those are my hardcore, faithful fans that help me survive. They support me, they support the things that I do. Even though I’m not on a national televised broadcast, or I’m not on Spike or even Sinclair, they still support me, and they still listen to what I have to say.”

  • Colt Cabana Says WWE Officials Won’t Return His Phone Calls

Colt Cabana stated during an interview with Pitch.com that he has not heard back from WWE officials since working two tryout matches for the organization in August.

“They won’t return my calls or anything,” he tells Justin Kendall. “It’s pretty weird, man. I don’t get it. Nobody was really receptive. It’s just like they wanted to ignore it. I think it’s because Punk is such a rebel that … they were able re-sign Punk, but I think to kind of stick it to him, they don’t want to talk to his friend.

He is asked whether he had that feeling when he worked the tryout matches.

“Nah,” Cabana responded. “It didn’t seem like. All of the wrestlers and all of the personalities and all of the personnel, they love me. They get it. I think there’s just a group of people who don’t get me or don’t want to get me. Unfortunately, that keeps me away from an opportunity, but at the same time, I think the answer was so obvious to put me on TV and capitalize on it.

“At the same time, I think it’s really nice that my fans are really gathering around me and supporting me and continuing me in wrestling without WWE. A lot of people say that you can only be successful if you’re in WWE, and I’m a great case and point where when it’s all said and done, to be a great wrestler doesn’t mean that you have to be a WWE Champion or WWE superstar.”

The full interview can be accessed here.

  • Steen & Cabana Takes Shots At Melina’s Reported Booking Fee

It was reported earlier today that a promoter who reached out to former WWE talent Melina Perez to book her for an independent wrestling event was informed by her representative that she is asking for $3,000 per appearance, as well as first class travel and hotel accommodations. Reigning PWG World Champion Kevin Steen, who has competed on the independent circuit for over ten years, made fun of the former WWE Diva’s reported asking fee.

He wrote on Twitter, “$3000 plus first class air and hotel?! Fuck…I’ve been charging way too little…”

A Twitter user then asked Steen, “Is there any real evidence that claim is accurate?” He responded, “Who cares?! I want to make fun of it. So it’s true.”

Ring of Honor talent Colt Cabana also lampooned Melina’s reported demands, writing to Steen on Twitter: “My wrestling fee has now gone from 2 diet cokes and a cupcake to 3 bajillionfajillion dollars… Pay up promoters!”

Steen then wrote a message predicting that John Morrison will follow Melina’s lead out of WWE and work indy shows alongside her. He wrote to Cabana: “I think that once her boyfriend gets released, promoters can save on (transportation) and book both of them. She’ll just ride with him.”

Anarchy Championship Wrestling promoter Darin Childs also gave his take on the matter, writing on the microblogging website, “As a promoter I should never do things like this, buuuut can we all LOL together at Melina’s appearance demands?”

Meanwhile, Melina garnered numerous messages today on her Twitter account regarding the claim and privately indicated to some users that it is untrue.

  • Colt Cabana Works RAW Dark Match, Goldberg Returning?

    – Ring of Honor Star (and former WWE star) Colt Cabana worked another dark match prior to Monday’s WWE RAW from San Jose, California. Colt Cabana lost to Curt Hawkins, but was said to have looked good in his second WWE tryout over the past few weeks. Some are expecting Colt Cabana to be re-signed by WWE as a favor to his longtime friend CM Punk.

    – Former WWE & WCW star Bill Goldberg says he is “probably” going to wrestle some time this year for the first time since 2004.

Video has surfaced online from an autograph signing back in March, which you can view below. Goldberg names “Stone Cold” Steve Austin as his ideal opponent, which remains a distant long-shot at best. Here’s the footage:
