Jen Yamamoto of The Daily Beast recently questioned whether or not WWE is “too scared to go LGBT,” in the headline of a new story. WWE executive Stephanie McMahon claims WWE is not, yet noted that openly gay wrestler Darren Young’s (Fred Rosser III) character is not gay.
“Darren Young was the first WWE Superstar to really come out as being homosexual, but his character in the show is not,” said McMahon.
“At least, we haven’t done anything with it either way — just yet.”
Stephanie added that WWE is open to the idea of having gay characters.
“It could very well pop up in WWE because we are all about what’s relevant, and what’s pop culture, and what people want to see,” she said. “So if there is an opportunity, we might just take it.”

WWE Superstar Darren Young recently appeared on SIRIUS/XM radio personality Sam Roberts’ podcast to talk about a number of subjects, including the internal reaction in WWE to the news that he was a homosexual, particularly how former WWE Superstar CM Punk handled the news.
“Him and I had like a love/hate relationship,” Young said of Punk. “He was a little rough around the edges, but to be honest with you, one thing about Punk if I could talk about him for just a second, when he had his match with Brock Lesnar in 2013 that was a couple days after I made my announcement to TMZ.”
Young continued, “After this brutal match with Brock Lesnar, he was all iced up and I hadn’t seen him since I made my announcement. So he came up to me in catering and told me to stand up in front of people. I stood up and he gave me a hug. He said, “I’m proud of you and if you ever have any problem with anyone in the locker room, you let me know. I have your back.”

On reuniting the Prime Time Players with Darren Young: “Yeah, the band is back together. The Prime Time Players are back together, and we’re focused on taking on what we started and building upon that. We’re the roughest, toughest and most entertaining tag team in the WWE, and we’re dead set on becoming the WWE tag-team champions.”
On his recent #UseYourVoice-themed message on Instagram: “It’s nothing that I haven’t been trying to convey years before I got into the WWE. My story is very powerful in itself. I was the beneficiary of people from all races and all backgrounds investing in me at a young age. I came from a fatherless home. My mother was raped at a very young age, and so, obviously, I came from an impoverished background.
People invested in that place to give me a fair opportunity at winning at life. So for me, I’m fulfilling a purpose in which I’m repaying every single individual that invested in me when they didn’t have to. I look at this world in a completely different manner than most people do. I don’t see it in the eyes of skin color, gender or sexual orientation. The people who have an issue of what I said are the very people that are the ones that are the biggest perpetuators of the problem. But I’m not pushing any agenda on anyone outside of being the best person you can be.”
– The Prime Time Players, Titus O’Neil and Darren Young, have both officially been added to the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal match at WrestleMania 31. During his recent Kayfabe Commentaries shoot interview, former WWE Superstar Brodus Clay spoke about the reaction in the WWE locker room to Darren Young “coming out of the closet” and publicly admitting that he is gay.
Below is an excerpt from the interview where Clay speaks about this subject.
“Well he got there. Darren is a Superstar and he’s a great worker. His work got him there. To be honest with you, our locker room, we have openly gay guys we work with and it was never a big deal. A lot of of times I was concerned, I’ll leave it up to him if he wants to disclose this himself or whatever, but I was worried about his dating habits. I wanted him to be careful because he does the dating sites and stuff like that. We were talking to him, like how is your dating life and things like that? So it wasn’t really a big thing when he came out.
I think for him probably he just made himself more comfortable. In terms of the locker room, it wasn’t a big deal. One of the greatest teachers and stars in our business, Mr. Pat Patterson. We weren’t like, “oh my what?” We’re past that. Our locker room is very accepting of that. Honestly, we’re probably more angry if someone’s not reading comic books than whether they’re gay or straight.”
