  • 10 Reasons the WWF vs. WCW Invasion Angle Failed (Part 1/2)

    20010401_vkm

During the summer of 2001, the WWE was under attack and at risk of a hostile takeover. After finally winning the Monday Night Wars, the WWE had to find a way to integrate the influx of talent that was acquired with the purchase of WCW.

Their first attempt at doing so would come in the form of the Invasion storyline, which saw former WCW and ECW employees “invading” the WWE in an attempt to take over the company. If this sounds a bit like the nWo’s plot to conquer WCW, well that’s because it is essentially the same story.

Ultimately, the program forced the WWE to fend off the intruders by forming a coalition to battle Team Alliance, which was led by Shane and Stephanie McMahon, the respective on-screen owners of WCW and ECW at the time.

Many fans have cited the Invasion storyline as one of the most entertaining periods in recent WWE history, as it featured a number of matchups that had previously been unimaginable. However, there were many aspects of the storyline that could have been handled better, resulting in a program with great potential that was squandered by poor booking. Here are ten reasons why the Invasion storyline was not as memorable as some fans recall.

On teaching DDP Yoga to WWE talent: “Triple H brought me down there about four months ago. I did a seminar with the guys and girls down there and they loved it. Everybody has the program now. It’s great for healing your body. Ryback is another guy that does it (DDP Yoga) and does it consistently too. Ryback is still hitting the weights obviously so he can maintain that massive size that he has. For him, its strength and conditioning, preventive maintenance for his body so he doesn’t break down.”

  • DDP Calls Nancy Grace A “Bitch,” Says He’ll Never Do Her Show Again

The following are highlights of a new Undisputed Wrestling Show interview with Diamond Dallas Page:

On his recent appearance on Nancy Grace: “First of all, I wanted to leave. Oh my god, this woman was so nice to me when I walked in there. Once she started hitting me with that deal, I got scared. I go ‘Oh my god, she set me up, so should I get up and walk away? How is that going to make the business look?’ I breathed, I focused on breathing…The only thing I could think of at that time was that WWE has the best wellness program, better than the NBA, NFL, MLB, so I think that is fighting for the company. I thought about firing back at her, but it was a really weird situation. I can’t put that bitch over. I can’t talk about her anymore, I want to strangle her. The last thing I want to be is in that position. The way it was told to me is that I saw four questions. I said ‘I don’t know about this’ and Nancy Grace said ‘No, it’s gonna be a feel good piece.’ When I walked in there, she was so sweet to me. She totally set me up.”

On the graphic that aired during the show about wrestlers who died young: “I I never saw that! That totally blindsided me. I will never do that bitch’s show again, I can guarantee you that!”

  • DDP Talks About Jake & Hall Entering the WWE Hall Of Fame, Ultimate Warrior Memories

Diamond Dallas page recently appeared on Wrestling 365 hosted by Alfonso Marimon and Jon Curry. Here are some highlights of what DDP said about:

The Energy Backstage at the WWE Hall of Fame:

“The Hall of Fame was really cool, getting there was the journey, the whole thing with Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts and Scott Hall. It was great to see both those guys be inducted, they both put a lot of work in. It’s one of those things, so many people bring it up, you get to the end and go, okay we got here, awesome, dreams do come true, but both of those guys are still addicts, so they fight it daily. I’ve had people come up to me and say dude you’ve cured Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts and I’m like what?, no, I never did that. All I did was help him, guide him and put him in a positive environment. Jake could fall down tomorrow and he does from time to time. He doesn’t live with me anymore, I can’t be his keeper, I just hope he can stay on the right track, but someone like Jake or Scott, either one of those guys could fall and hopefully not too far, because we can fall too far and then the promoters and everyone don’t want to deal with that stuff, but as of right now, it was a glorious moment.”

How It Felt To See Jake Roberts & Scott Hall Inducted:

“It actually felt great man, for Scott’s speech I went out in front and sat with my girl and my ex-wife Kimberly, they were both there, they’re friends and we watched Kevin (Nash) come out and then Scott and afterwards I went backstage again. To be in that whole…..That’s like the highest honor you can get in our business, I think it even crosses over World Championships to that next level. There’s still certain people that belong and should be in there and that will always be the case, but eventually, sometimes that takes a while, everyone gets their turn. I said it 18 months earlier, we set the big pie in the sky dream that we would be on this (Hall of Fame) stage on this night.

“Jake didn’t think that was possible, but Jake had to go through a lot of changes for that to happen and he did and it was a journey. We’ve done the movie, that’s where the movie ends, I’m sure we’ll have a little trail-off, because I don’t know exactly what will happen in the next 6 months, 8 months before we’ve got the film completely tied up. I’ve been filming with director and co-producer Steve Yu the resurrection of Jake The Snake’s story and that details Scott Hall coming in and where he was when he started and that journey and a lot of it is really fun and inspirational, while some of it is dark. There’s dark moments man and there’s times where the 3 of us did not get along.”

    Memories Of The Ultimate Warrior:

“The first time I was on a card or an event with the Warrior was at WrestleMania 6 and I didn’t get the gig, my car did, I was Diamond Dallas Chauffeur for Rhythm N Blues and I got to meet a lot of the boys. I was in the AWA at the time as a manager, but everybody dreamed of being at WrestleMania, this is the spot and I’m there. I may be driving a Cadillac, but you know what, none of my other buddies are. Hulk Hogan came up to me and was so nice to me and talked about my gimmick and we talked for about 10 minutes and it was amazing.

“Really, the only superstar I wanted to meet that evening and didn’t get the chance to was Warrior, that would happen 10 years later when he came in in WCW to start up his feud with Hulk Hogan and when he got to TV, I was planning on going by, I was looking forward to shaking his hand and meeting him, maybe having some kind of a relationship with him and one of the agents came by and said DDP, you want to meet The Ultimate Warrior and I said absolutely, I’ll be down there later, but the agent said that he sort of asked me to come by and grab you and Goldberg and see if you guys would want to meet him and I was like he’s requesting US to come by, sure, I’ll come with you.

“I walked down there and gave him a big hug and he talked about how much fun he’s had watching us (DDP and Goldberg) and how we made him want to get back in the business. The main event that they would be working towards would be Halloween Havoc and this story shows how anything is possible in this world. 10 years later, from working at the Skydome, being a chauffeur and watching Hogan vs. Warrior for the title to watching them 10 years later, but this time I’m going for the World Championship against Goldberg.

“It took a fan writing me that on Twitter to really put that in perspective and I was like, woah, I never really put that together. I saw him at WrestleCon last year and we talked for a little bit and he was so blown away by what I was doing with DDP Yoga and Scott and Jake and he said, you’re doing God’s work man. He’s a big God man, I am too, I’m not the big preacher guy, but I’m a big God man. For him to give me the shoutout at the Hall of Fame for him being inducted, not once, not twice, but like 4 times and it was a little tongue-in-cheek funny, but he respected what I was doing. I never got a chance to thank him for that, because that was just so cool of him to do that.”

On how it felt personally for him to see Jake and Scott be inducted: “It actually felt great man, for Scott’s speech I went out in front and sat with my girl and my ex-wife Kimberly, they were both there, they’re friends and we watched Kevin (Nash) come out and then Scott and afterwards I went backstage again. Diamond Dallas Page published the following video on Youtube on Thursday featuring Jake Roberts breaking some ‘bad news’ after receiving a call from WWE back in January. Jake tells DDP that the company decided against using him in the 2014 Royal Rumble match, but then drops the bombshell news about his WWE Hall of Fame induction.

Jake tells page that the door has been left open for him to appear in next year’s Rumble.

The footage is a ‘sneak preview’ for their upcoming documentary, The Resurrection of Jake The Snake Roberts.

DDP Issues Statement Regarding His Appearance On Nancy Grace

Diamond Dallas Page issued the following statement today regarding his appearance on the controversial Nancy Grace segment on The Ultimate Warrior last night.

“I went on Nancy Grace last night expecting to discuss Warrior the man. Had I known the only topic discussed would be steroids I would not have participated. At the time I was also unaware of the list that was shown to the viewing audience. To imply that all of the wrestlers on that list died from steroids was wrong and for that they owe the families an apology. Again, my only intention was to discuss Warrior the man and share some stories about how dedicated he was to the wrestling business. I am saddened that was not what happened and my thoughts remain with his family.

Video: Nancy Grace Covers Warrior’s Death, Says Owen Died From Drugs

Cable news host Nancy Grace spoke about the Ultimate Warrior’s death on her show on Wednesday night and right off the bat, the narrative was that pro wrestling has lost another legend due to drugs.

“This isn’t the first time we’ve seen wrestlers die young. Nancy Grace talks with Diamond Dallas Page, a former professional wrestler, about the death of Hellwig and other wrestlers.”

Grace continuously stated that “rumors are swirling” that steroids were a factor in Warrior’s death, and showed a scrolling list of wrestlers who died young and even mistakenly said that Owen Hart died from drugs. In fact, numerous people on the list died from circumstances completely unrelated to drugs:

    • Mark Curtis (Stomach cancer, referee)
    • Brady Boone (Car accident)
    • Joey Marella (Car accident, referee)
    • Chris Candido (blood clot following surgery)
    • DJ Peterson (motorcycle accident)

Her segment set off a huge backlash on Twitter, with several of Owen’s friends pointing out the hurtful inaccuracy and slamming Grace:

  • DDP Speaks On WrestleMania, His Time In WWE, Vince McMahon, Eric Bischoff

The following are highlights of a new Diamond Dallas Page interview:

On WWE purchasing WCW: “I knew my career was going to continue in WWE no matter what. So it didn’t affect me personally until I realized that a lot of people were going to lose their jobs and essentially lose their dreams. However, I always knew I would get to WWE because that was my goal since I was 17 years old.”

On his time in WWE: “The positive side of it is it was an awesome learning experience. What I should have done was say “This is an awesome angle, but not for me; let me know when you want to do People’s Champion vs People’s Champion” and then walk away. Since I didn’t, I learned a huge lesson. I always tell people it doesn’t matter if you make mistakes as long as you learn from them. So in reality, the Stalker angle was probably the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”

“I may not have had the run that I wanted in WWE, but I got a great Wrestlemania match with Christian and I got to be on the same card as The Rock vs Hulk Hogan. It’s also funny how things come around because I was a competitor at Wrestlemania X8, but 12 years ago when Wrestlemania was held in that same arena, I was driving a pink Cadillac.”

On Eric Bischoff: “Bischoff was my close friend that I met in the AWA. We were nobodies together and we came up together. Nobody believed in either of us. We helped each other out with angles, matches, etc. He protected me when guys tried to mess with me. I missed having that when I got to WWE because there was a ton of egos.”

On Vince McMahon: “As far as Vince is concerned, I never really got to know him. I have respect for him, but I don’t know the guy that well because I wasn’t a top guy in WWE.”

  • Jake Roberts Talks About His Hall Of Fame Induction, Vince McMahon Forgiving Him

2014 WWE Hall of Famer Jake Roberts recently spoke with Philly.com to promote WrestleMania weekend. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

The Significance Of His Hall of Fame Induction: “There’s so much electricity in the air and so many good thoughts going through me. Nothing can take the shine off what’s about to happen because not only am I being inducted into the Hall of Fame, which is something I didn’t think would ever happen because of my out-of-the-ring antics and some of the things I said.”

Vince McMahon Forgiving Him: “People have to remember that an alcoholic and a drug addict can be known to tell a lie or two and I certainly did my share of it with lashing out and was pretty ugly about it. For Vince McMahon to forgive and forget — maybe he hasn’t forgotten, but at least he’s forgiven — and to invite me into the Hall of Fame … it’s going to be an awesome, awesome moment.”

Diamond Dallas Page Saving His Life: “There would have been no other choice other than god himself. Diamond Dallas saved my life. He didn’t have to, but that’s the kind of guy he is. He’s helped so many people with his DDP Yoga. It’s just incredible with the lives he’s changing, the lives he’s affecting. I am so honored to be part of that. Me making my journey, Scott Hall making his journey, we opened the doors for a lot of people out there that are struggling with all sorts of addictions. Whether it’s food or sex or whatever it’s still an addiction and addictions aren’t healthy.”

His New Book That Comes Out in June: “Right now, it’s 600 pages and that doesn’t even get me to the WWE years. It’s going to be a really, really intense book. I think it will help a lot of people understand more about addiction and more about people that have had struggles in their lives with sexual abuse. I’m opening the doors to my life. I’m not talking about anybody else. It’s just my own. I really look forward to having out there and traveling around and promoting it.”

DDP Speaks On Working With David Arquette, Learning From Undertaker & More

The following are highlights of a new WGD Weekly interview with Diamond Dallas Page:

Working with David Arquette in WCW and the reaction of the fans to his becoming WCW Champion: “…David Arquette is his own animal. As much heat as he ever took, for him, …all the money he made for that pay per view when he busted me over the head with the guitar and Jarrett took the World Title, the money he made, he gave to Melanie Pillman…When he pinned Bischoff, not me, and I will go on record as saying that was the biggest cluster fu*k ever! and it never should’ve happened, but it did. That being said, that was the booking committee, it was not David Arquette, and every fan that has ever roasted him should dip their own ass in boiling oil, because everyone of you that has buried David Arquette if put in the same position, you would’ve jumped through a hoop of burning oil to do the same sh*t. That’s why when everybody busts balls on that, I just want to smack someone. I’m like really, you, ‘marko mark?’ You would’ve died for that…”

A conversation he had in his early days wrestling in WCW backstage with Hulk Hogan: “…I walked through the curtain after my match and Hulk pulls me over and he says, ‘how are you getting so much better?’ I said, ‘wow, Hulk, thanks, how do you even know?’ He goes, ‘I’ve been watching your match the last couple nights.’ I’m thinking, your watching my matches? So, he says, this is what they are doing, I don’t hardly ever see you on TV, just once in a while. He says, this is what they are doing with you, they’re letting you learn your craft on the road here…I said, I go to the Power Plant, he said, what is the Power Plant…I told Hulk, I figured out that the more that I train people down there…and if you only work when they book you, then you never really get any good, because you’re not wrestling enough…I go down there every day I’m not wrestling and what I figured out is the more I train people, the more I learn and the more I learn! the better I got. Hulk really didn’t understand it because he came from a different generation where you went from one territory to another, but he said, well, whatever it is your doing you need to keep doing it because it might not be this year, or next year, or even the year after, but if you keep doing what you’re doing, somewhere down the line, you and I can draw huge money together, and then he walked away…”

A great reaction from Paul Orndorff backstage before the spot on Nitro with him and Randy Savage, where he was disguised as LaParka: “…when I did LaParka against Savage, it was one if my favorite moments in wrestling. Nobody knew that was coming. There has never been a moment that was like that in professional wrestling…you had no fu$#*ng idea…Bischoff pulled me aside in a room, with Sullivan…he goes okay, here is the deal, we are going to dress you up as LaParka and keep you guys in here the whole time, no one is going to know…so, you’re going over with a Diamond Cutter, I said, ‘Oh my god,’ he says, and then you rip off the mask and the place is going to go bat sh*t, and it did. So, I’m in the back with LaParka, and he can barely talk English, so I’m mimicking him, how do I do your walk, how do you play the guitar, what do you do with the chair? He is showing me his sh*t, so then to get to Mr.Wonderful, he is an agent at the time. He is walking around giving finishes. He gets to the door and knocks on it. I open the door in full LaParka gimmick. Now LaParka is about six foot! but I’m six four, legit, so, Orndorff is a good six one, he knows he is taller than LaParka. He is looking down his glasses at the sheet and he looks up and he goes, ‘You’re going over?” Then he looks back up at me and he sees my blue eyes, and it LaParka, but he goes, ‘ You’re not LaParker.” Then he could just see my eyes light up and they just went, ‘ding,’ and he realized it’s me, and he just says, ‘ I love it,’ then I do the thing and he says, ‘mums the word,’ then he walks away…”

A life lesson he learned from agreeing to do the “stalker” angle in WWE against the Undertaker: “…I’ve already learned, walk away from the table. I learned that in WWE. If I walk away from Vince and I don’t do the stalker angle, and I go, ‘wow, good stuff, but not for me.’ If I walk out and say call me when you want to do people’s champion versus people’s champion, I wouldn’t have made it to the elevator. All I had to do was walk away from the table, but I just thought, they know what they are doing…what I learned out of that was never be afraid to walk away from the table. After that, I have never signed a contract the first time, I don’t care what it is. I don’t agree to anything the first time, let me think about it…”

Thoughts on the comments from fans he reads across the internet: “You know, I read a lot if what people write on YouTube, as obviously I have my DDP TV videos, which is hundreds of them…and people write a lot of comments. I also read when there is something I said in an interview…now I don’t remember the article, but you know, you get these jerk offs that go online and they think they know the business…I don’t know who they are, but there are certain people who just don’t like me no matter what I do, for whatever reason…I get that, not everybody is going to like you, but when they just write stupid sh*t, I can’t help but laugh…No matter how rude some of the comments can be, I find it entertaining…”

Page will be bringing his revolutionary fitness system DDP YOGA to New Orleans April 4th and 5th, to coincide with the biggest weekend in wrestling.

Page will be hosting his intensive DDP YOGA workshops at the Holiday Inn New Orleans Westbank, where attendees will learn how they can tap into the power of dynamic resistance and take control of their health – and their lives.

DDP YOGA has become hugely popular among current and past athletes, as well as regular people who are seeking to overhaul their health and fitness with a low-impact but amazingly effective calorie-blasting, muscle-building workout.

  • DDP Talks Jake Roberts’ Cancer Surgery, WWE HOF, Having One Last Match

The following are highlights from another new Diamond Dallas Page interview:

On DDP Yoga: “There are 30 current WWE wrestlers doing DDP Yoga. Every single wrestler at the Performance Center does it, that’s 19 women and 61 guys doing DDP Yoga.”

On Jake Roberts’ cancer surgery: “He’s got to get the skin cancer removed from his leg. I asked how he could let it spread like this, it’ll be interesting to see what happens tomorrow because they said the surgery could be 2 hours, or it could be 8 hours.”

On a DDP Yoga App: “It’ll be like the Netflix of fitness. We will have our own programming and only through the APP will you be able to get live workouts. We’ll also do cooking and you might see me cooking with Jake or Scott in the accountability crib.”

On having one last match: “I have no intention to do it anywhere other than WWE. The only person I would consider wrestling would be Randy Orton and only because our storyline is built in. We could have a hell of a run but it would break my body up so bad. There is no reason for them to put him in an angle with me because he is too far up the ladder and I’m grateful for that because I’d take it if they offered it.”

On if he will induct Jake Roberts into the WWE Hall Of Fame: “It’s been talked about but everything runs through the WWE so I don’t know what decision they will make. I would be honoured to do it but it won’t hurt my feelings if they pick someone else because it’s Jake’s night.”

  • DDP Speaks On Fans Hijacking Shows, Working With Heath Slater, Shark Tank

The following are highlights from a recent Journey Of A Frontman interview with Diamond Dallas Page:

On his appearance on ABC”s “Shark Tank” reality show: “Well you know, there was parts where there was tension. I thought they did such an amazing job on the edit. I was just like, “Wow!” I was blown away. It was what it should be, an inspirational piece. It didn’t matter whether we got a deal or not, it was amazing all the way around. That’s the way I see it.”

On wrestlers using DDP Yoga: “Well, the best example I can give you is the guy who really gave me the credibility, Chris Jericho. He had herniated his L4 when he was doing Dancing with the Stars. Even though the show was really physical, it wasn’t that. It was the twenty years of wrestling he had prior to that. It was the straw that broke the camel’s back, so to speak. I heard he was out and the doctor said he was done, the same thing happened to me at forty two, and now he’s forty. They’re saying he’s done, so I sent him the video of Arthur’s transformation, a disabled veteran (that was told that he would never be able to walk on his own ever again) who with DDP Yoga, lost one hundred and forty pounds in ten months and was able to walk and run on his own, gaining tremendous balance and flexibility along the way. The video has over ten million views.”

“I sent it to Jericho about two and a half years ago. When he saw the video, he said, ”Send me whatever he did and I will do whatever you want me to do.” And he followed the plan exactly the way I taught him. In five weeks, he was eighty five percent pain free. In three months, he was a hundred percent pain free. He headlined Wrestlemania two years ago in Miami, then he worked for a couple more months, then he took off and went touring with his band Fozzy for six months. And then he showed up at the Royal Rumble in January of 2013. If you’re not wrestling all the time, you fly out there in the first five minutes, you’ll be blown sky high. But because DDP YOGA is a kickass cardiovascular workout that dramatically increases your flexibility and strengthens your core with minimal joint impact, he was able to come back and wrestle a match because of my workout and the level that he does it. He was the number two spot in the Royal Rumble, he wrestled for forty seven minutes and fifty three seconds. He only does one workout, DDP YOGA. That’s the greatest testimony I can give to you.”

“There’s at least thirty guys who are doing it, whether it’s Dustin Rhodes or Ryback or Sandow, there’s a bunch of ‘em that are doing the workout. All the young kids are doing it, the guys that are coming up trying to get their break in the WWE Performance Center down there. So it’s pretty much across the board right now.”

On working with Heath Slater for the 1,000th episode of RAW: “I thought it was awesome. I love the kid. He was having the time of his life because he was a fan of all of us. So he couldn’t wait for the Vader Bomb or the Diamond Cutter. I mean he loved it. And he’s a good kid, he’s a damn good worker. I hope at some point he actually gets the push. He could back it up because he can talk and he can work.”

On fans hijacking shows with random chants: “I love it. (laughs) In a very different way, that’s what happened for me. The bookers weren’t doing shit with me. If you look at 1996, I work with Eddy, we had amazing matches together. But I also worked enhancement matches because that was most of the shit they gave me. The crowd though, watch a video called Diamond Cutters on Everyone. Just watch that video. It’s about four minutes long. And watch the people pop when I hit the Diamond Cutter and they pop a little more, a little more, and then a lot more, then a really lot more, then a fuckin’ crazy lot more. Ten thousand people in the building would jump to their feet because of all the ways I did the move, it came out of nowhere. You watch that video all the way through, go back and watch it, watch and see who I hit that on. Sting or Hogan or Nash? No, none of ‘em. It was all enhancement guys. So the crowd was with me crazy. WCW had to do something with me. And Daniel Bryan, a couple weeks back where he ended up on top of the cage doing the “Yes!”, holy shit. To me, that’s as over as I’ve ever seen anybody. It may be the most.”
