Edge Talks About Transitioning From Wrestling to Acting, Attitude Era & More

WWE Hall of Famer Adam “Edge” Copeland recently spoke to Forbes.com about WWE ’13, the Attitude Era and life after WWE, including his acting work on the Syfy series “Haven.” Here are some highlights, including a video of the interview:

Favorite Memories from the Attitude Era: Oh, there’s so much stuff, you know. I think back to the stuff that Christian and I did and all the idiotic things that we did that were so much fun. You had two guys that grew up together and really do act like brothers and did play Sega Genesis together in college and we did do all of these things. Now we’re on worldwide TV living out our dream, getting to show a side of our personalities, which is essentially us. I mean everything we did every week. You know there’s not one particular thing that sticks out more than anything else because we had fun all the time.

Not Having to Travel Constantly Anymore: I don’t miss that at all. That was the part of it that really became like Groundhog Day. That was the the part with injuries and things like that where you sit on a plane for too long, my body just goes, “No way, dude.” Last weekend I was on the road for two days at a wrestling schedule and I was fried, just exhausted. And that truly woke me up, I couldn’t do that anymore now that I’m removed.

Transitioning from Wrestling to Acting: There are similarities without a doubt, but some more minor differences. I really had to pull back a lot of things and reel in my facial expressions if I was doing something. I really sat down with the directors and said, “Okay, I have no idea what I’m doing.” My tendency is to go huge and over the top to translate something to someone 80,000 people away. It has to be larger than life. With this they know if you’ve got a nose hair. So you’ve really got to try and pull back all of those things that I was naturally inclined to do. That I found was kind of the biggest transition, but thankfully I worked with a bunch of different directors that each really helped me in a different way. They really helped me with trying to calm these things a little bit. It’s been a learning process, but not quite as crazy as I thought it was going to be.

“Raw GM would still involve lotsa travel, which at this point still bothers my neck,” he wrote. “As I recover more, who knows.”

Former Referee Releasing Autobiography On His WWE Career, WWE Signs California Wrestler, Rosa Mendes

The synopsis for the 300-page book, The Three Count: My Life in Stripes as a WWE Referee, reads, “Highlighting the triumphs and tragedies Jimmy Korderas experienced, this entertaining biography focuses on his 20-year career as a World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) referee. For the first time, Korderas talks about the harrowing experience of being in the ring during Owen Hart’s accident and about the horrific effects of the Chris Benoit tragedy—the most difficult moments of his life in wrestling. The book also includes untold stories from both inside and outside the ring, highlighting the bonds Korderas formed with WWE superstars such as Eddie Guerrero, Edge, John Cena, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, Christian, and Chris Jericho. A fun read from a man who, rather than having an ax to grind, wants to inspire wrestling fans and prove that dreams do come true.”

CM Punk’s Historic WWE Title Reign, Edge’s Neck Surgery & More

– WWE Hall of Famer Edge will undergo another neck surgery on Thursday. Edge was asked by a fan on Twitter if this procedure will allow him to wrestle again one day, but the Rated R Superstar shot down those hopes:

– WWE CFO George Barrios is featured in Forefront Magazine and named his parents and Vince McMahon as his role models. He stated that Vince behaves “as if every day is the first day on the job.”

– WWE Champion CM Punk is quickly approaching the 1-year mark for his title reign. If Punk successfully retains the WWE title at Survivor Series on 11/19, the following day will mark one year for him as champion. Punk would be the first person to hold the WWE Championship for a full year since John Cena back in 2006.

If CM Punk is able to keep the title past November 26th, he will surpass Randy Savage’s 371 day title reign (1988-1989). If he can remain champion past December 5th, he will surpass John Cena’s 380 day title rein – making him the longest reigning WWE Champion since Hulk Hogan’s 1984-1988 reign.

Adam Copeland Says He’s No Longer Edge, Update On Beth Phoenix, John Cena

– Adam Copeland stated during a radio interview in his native Ontario, Canada that he is no longer permitted to use the “Edge” name for public appearances since he is no longer affiliated with WWE.

“For me, Edge was just a character. I never introduced myself as (Edge). I never really worried about what people can advertise me as. It doesn’t really matter to me. I’ve always just introduced myself as Adam Copeland. I never really thought too much about it”, Copeland said in the interview.

“I think if I would have wrestled another five or seven years, I would have regrets. At this point, the rest of my body feels great. Once I get the surgery and they take the pressure off of my spinal cord, I’m going to feel like a million bucks. I feel better than most wrestlers my age; most of those guys are walking like Boris Karloff, while I’m able to run laps! I kind of look at it and go, ‘Yeah, I think this happened for a reason.’ From a physical standpoint, this is the healthiest I’ve ever felt.”

Visit FightingSpiritMagazine.co.uk for more information.

– Beth Phoenix, who is expected to part ways with WWE this month after giving notice, is no longer advertised for any upcoming events on the company website (with the exception of the Royal Rumble, which was posted months ago and has not been changed).

– John Cena is featured on the cover of the latest issue of the newsstand magazine Inside Wrestling.

– TNA X Division Champion Zema Ion teased the following on Twitter for tonight’s episode of Impact Wrestling: “Just arrived in Orlando for @IMPACTWRESTLING live on @SpikeTV…who will I injure tonight? Forget Aces & Eights. I’m the true “arm breaker.”

– Promoting Bound For Glory, Hulk Hogan appeared on HLN’s Showbiz Tonight on Wednesday night. The interview instead centered on the sex tape scandal that he says “turned his world upside down.”

Hogan said that during a low point in his life he made a bad decision. Now he is praying that it wasn’t his best friend, Bubba the Love Sponge, who betrayed him and released the tape. (Watch)

Edge Talks About Retirement And Working With Tommy Dreamer’s New HOH Promotion

WWE Hall of Famer Adam “Edge” Copeland was interviewed this week by the Whig Standard to hype the first live event for Tommy Dreamer’s House of Hardcore this Saturday night from Poughkeepsie, NY. Here are some highlights of what the Rated R Superstar said about:

On whether he had advance knowledge that his in-ring career would end so suddenly: “None of us did,” Copeland said. “I knew there were issues, but we didn’t the extent of what the issues were. It kind of caught all of us — me probably least of all just because I was like ‘whoa, something weird is happening here…’ I knew something (was wrong). No one else really knew because I didn’t tell anybody else. I think Christian was the only who knew because he rode with me. And he knows me. Him, I’ll confide in. And Tommy, there were nights where he carried my bags up for me because I had no strength in my arms. He knew, too. But generally, it was like you just go out, you do your thing and you don’t say anything and then you get back and you do it again.”

House of Hardcore: “I think it can be a place that I know Tommy kind of wants it to be — where guys can have a little bit more freedom to maybe not have quite as many restraints,” he said. “That doesn’t mean light bulbs or any of that crap. I think it just (means) if guys want to go out and try some different things, they’ll have the freedom to do it. And I’m sure they’ll be told ‘hey, that didn’t work,’ but you don’t know unless you try. I think you’ll probably have the Young Bucks and (Brian) Kendrick and (Paul) London go out and try a million things,” he said of some of the stars on tap at the debut show. “Half of them might work, half of them might not, but it will be cool to watch the process of what does and doesn’t. Or where things should be tweaked.”

Taking on a Backstage Role for HOH: “I told Tommy … ‘man I don’t mind helping out, helping guys put their ideas together in a way that makes sense, or helping guys after the fact if they want,’ and just kind of being hands-on with (Dreamer) in the back and help him out in that respect. That’s something that is a little foreign to the wrestling veteran, believe it or not. I’ve had a lot of young guys come up and ask me throughout the years, and it’s always nice to see them implemented and then when it works, it’s even nicer. It’s like ‘OK, good, I didn’t give bad advice.’ But I’ve never been in a backstage role where I wasn’t also wrestling, too. That could be kind of neat, just to, I guess for lack of a better term, kind of give back in that respect.”

Edge also denied that he was offered a new deal by WWE and the company has not said anything negative to him about his work with Tommy Dreamer’s promotion.

Backstage News On Why Edge Has Heat With WWE Management

WWE Hall of Famer Edge reportedly has a lot of heat on him with WWE management for turning down a Legends contract multiple times. WWE’s most recent attempt to sign Edge came two weeks ago when he appeared on SmackDown.

Edge has not satisfied with the amount of money offered to him and does not want to be restricted with what companies he can appear for.

Edge will be making an appearance for Tommy Dreamer’s new House of Hardcore promotion on October 6th, 2012 in the Mid-Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsie, NY. A Legends deal would likely prohibit him from appearing on shows like this.

There is also a belief in WWE that Beth Phoenix’s recent departure is partially so she can help her boyfriend, Edge, recover from the neck surgery he is scheduled to undergo next month.

All that said, the relationship is rocky but the door is still open for Edge to appear for WWE again in the future.

Tonight’s Raw May Set Record Low Audience, Hell in a Cell Theme A Fozzy Song, WWE In Poland, Edge Appearance

– There has been a lot of talk this week within WWE that tonight’s Raw broadcast may be the least watched non-holiday episode in fifteen years. Facing stiff competition in Monday Night Football on ESPN, last week’s show had the fewest viewers since July 4, 2011 and was the smallest audience for a non-holiday episode in over five years. The Green Bay Packers-Seattle Seahawks game did 16.167 million viewers, and tonight’s game between the Dallas Cowboys and Chicago Bears is expected to eclipse that figure.

– One of the theme songs for WWE Hell in a Cell is “Sandpaper,” the lead single off of the Chris Jericho–fronted metal band Fozzy’s latest album, “Sin and Bones.” The music video for “Sandpaper” will premiere tonight on WWE.com.

– The official WWE website has announced that a live event will take place in Lodz, Poland at Atlas Arena on Saturday, April 27, 2013. John Cena, CM Punk, Rey Mysterio and The Miz will headline the event.

– Adam “Edge” Copeland and Tommy Dreamer appear at Dave and Busters 325 N Columbus Blvd. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania this Sunday from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Click here to view the event flyer.

Edge Talks About His Neck Surgery, TLC, Hugging Kane On SmackDown & More

WWE Hall of Famer and former WWE and World Heavyweight Champion “The Rater R Superstar” Edge joined Wrestle Talk Radio Sunday Night. In a nearly 30 minutes interview, he discussed his appearance on SyFy’s shot Haven and how he got into acting, his skit on Mind of Mencia commentating on a match between Moses and Jesus, his impending neck surgery, transition from in-ring promo work to acting, being there for Christian’s World Title win, the iconic TLC match with the Hardy’s and the Dudley’s at Wrestlemania X-7, the memorable ‘Five Second Pose’ idea as well as who came up with the concept and several favorite poses, what it was like hugging Kane on Smackdown, his passion for arts and reading, would he consider comedy as a future avenue, his Hall of Fame induction and being the youngest inductee in the Hall, cutting his hair and the decision/reason to do so, the legacy of Edge and so much more.

You can check out the archive at this link or visit Wild Talk on Facebook at this link.

What Led Him To Become An Actor: “When I was forced into retirement and having to come to terms with that, this fell in my lap and it ended up just being, I guess, the next step of what I might do; I’m still not entirely positive, but it’s been a lot of fun so far. And it still taps into those creative juices that I know, I realize now, that I’m going to have to get out one way or the other, whether it’s writing or reading or painting or something like that. Some people are wired where they can crunch numbers or sit in an office; I can’t do that, I just have to get it out some other way. I can stand in a gallery all day and look at things or just hike a mountain or something like that, but I cant, I can’t sit in an enclosed space for too long.”

His Acting Career & Upcoming Neck Surgery: “You know, the acting thing was never my intent at all. I never saw myself doing anything, wrestling was kind of it for me. Through the years, WWE would say, ‘Hey, what about this?’ and I’d say ‘Ok, sure. Yeah, I’ll do it, sounds like fun’ but I’m still going to come back to wrestling; it’s not like I’m going to take off for a year and go make movies or anything like that. Even when I did shoot that WWE movie, I still maintained the wrestling schedule. So, it was never my goal or anything like that but then when faced with retirement, I was like ‘Ok, well, this has once again fallen into my lap. I guess I’ll give this a shot. Worth a try’ Going forward, right now, Haven is the only think on the docket.”

“But I have to get neck surgery, again, in November. I’d been putting that off since I retired just because something would come up, like the Hall of Fame. I don’t want to sit on my butt for four months in a neck collar and then show up on stage and have people go ‘Woah, retirement hasn’t been good to him.’ And then, from there it was ‘Ok, Haven was starting to shoot again and I need four months to recover from the surgery,” so I just haven’t had enough time yet to get the surgery done. So I was like, ok, the season has wrapped; I’ll do the promotional stuff and a few appearances here and there and then November 8th is the surgery and I thought I’ll just concentrate on that, getting healthy and then go from there.”

His Iconic TLC match at Wrestlemania X-7 with the Hardy’s and Dudley’s: “At Wrestlemania 16, we actually won the Tag Team Championships for the first time, so that one really sticks out for me, because there had been talk about breaking us up as a tag team and we thought we had so much to offer as a team, and it would have been a waste to not let us do our thing. Up until that point, we’d never even really talked on camera because no one thought we could. We knew what we could do; we knew we were just a couple of morons and you give us a mic and man, we’re going to have some fun with it. So, thankfully, at Wrestlemania 16, we got the chance to do that.”

“Fast forward a year later, to Wrestlemania 17 and it was like ‘Ok, there’s some pretty good matches here’. We had Rock/Austin, Undertaker/ Triple H, Shane/Vince , I mean it was a pretty stacked card and we were really proud of the fact that one of the main events of that show was the Hardy’s, the Dudley’s and Edge and Christian. We knew we were doing something different and we had to come through and had to deliver; we knew we could do something that no one else was doing. I do remember that night though; we got to the back and were like ‘Man, the crowd wasn’t that great, huh? I don’t know; they just weren’t there like we thought.’ We’d done some ridiculous spots; not realizing, up until that point we’d never worked a crowd of that size or a dome for that matter, so the sound goes straight up; it doesn’t come at you like it does in an arena. So, that was an adjustment because we watched it back and we were like ‘Oh, the crowd was going nuts; we just couldn’t hear it.’ So that was pretty interesting.”

Who came up with the idea of the ‘Five Second Pose’ gimmick: “I wish, I wish I could tell you whose exact idea. I do know that Jay (Christian), myself and Brian Gewirtz (now Head Writer of RAW) would all sit down and we would just bounce ridiculous things off the wall to see what would stick; whether it was words or you know. The genesis of it started when I remember saying ‘I don’t want to come through the crowd anymore. I think that whole Goth, mysterious thing; we aren’t that anymore. We should be cocky; we should not want the audience to touch us.’ So, that was the genesis of that whole thing and then it became: ‘Ok, we’ll still give you fans something; we’ll let you take our picture for five seconds.’ That’s kind of where that all was born, but the three of us would just sit around and say ‘What about rediculosity? That could work, huh? What about toolshed? Those are good words. How about Reeking of Awesomeness?’ If it made us laugh, it stuck.”

Hugging Kane on Smackdown: “We’ve have (had some hellacious feuds) and outside the ring, he’s one of my close friends, so the idea I could hug him on national TV and he really has no choice in the matter really tickled my funny bone. I loved the idea because I know, inside, he’s going ‘Oh my God’ and I’m loving that fact because I pitched the idea so I was like ‘Ok, I wanna do …. I want to hug those guys’ and they went ‘Oh, ok. Sure.’ And Daniel Bryan is one of my favorite guys too so I figured if I could interact with these two, and do something just fun. I don’t want come back and do these serious, angry promos; there’s no pay off. So, you know, if I could be involved in a fun moment and something that kids can have fun with and people are going to get a kick out of. I get a kick out of too; I get all fired up and kind of make stuff up while I’m out there. That’s always fun for me too is to try and get them to break; a lot of the things I said, they didn’t know I was going to say. That’s always fun, to see if I can get the big fella to smile. And then, I really enjoy Damien Sandow; I really like what he’s doing. So I thought this is cool, this is awesome; I can further something, I can be there and help further something along, it helps Haven. Everybody wins.”
