Eric Bischoff Suing TNA, Comments On Former TNA Stars In WWE, More

Eric Bischoff was interviewed this past week at Montreal Comic Con by Ryan Rider of Main Event Radio. It was a newsworthy chat, with Bischoff revealing that he’s currently in the midst of a lawsuit with TNA and giving his thoughts on former TNA stars AJ Styles, Samoa Joe and Bobby Roode currently in WWE/NXT.

Here are some highlights of what he said about:

What went wrong with TNA:

“I try to put them both out of my mind so I couldn’t tell you. No comment. I’m in the middle of a lawsuit with them so I can’t really comment.”

Any positive memories from his time in TNA?

“I don’t have any.”

AJ Styles, Samoa Joe, and Bobby Roode now in WWE:

“You name three guys who are probably the one bright spot of my time in that other organization. There are all 3 some of the most quality people as human beings and as professionals. I’m thrilled to death for AJ Styles as I am for Samoa Joe. I think Bobby Roode is probably one of the most under-estimated, highest potential talents that WWE could get their hands on so I’m thrilled to death for him. I won’t say that Samoa Joe is underrated because most people recognize what a special athlete he is, but if you get to know him on a personal level you cannot find a better person so I’m thrilled to death.”

His son Garrett:

“He’s doing great. He’s not still wrestling. He transitioned out of wrestling when I did. He has a great career now, lives down in Florida, he’s married, and he’s doing well.”

If he would ever return to WWE, even for a one-time appearance:

“Highly doubtful. Because I haven’t gotten a call. And I’m a little busy; I’ve got stuff going on. Not to be coy or cute, I think that time has passed. I had a great time, I worked there for 5 years and it was one of the highlights of my career. Times change, people change. I think a character like mine I’d come back for a week or two or three but then after that people would get tired and say this is the ‘same old, same old’ kind of thing.”

Is he finished with the pro wrestling business?

“Never say never. If the right opportunity and by that I mean something that was exciting and felt fresh. Something that I believed that the fans would really appreciate and that I would have fun doing. I’d love to be back. Because I love the business and a lot of the people in it. I’ve spent a lot of time in the business, I’ve done a lot of things. It would take something pretty unique to get me excited. It’s really gratifying to see after all these years, and I’ve been in the business for 30 years, and after all of these years to see fans wearing nWo shirts and fans of WCW who still remember make me feel good.”

Eric Bischoff Says His Ideas Still Influence WWE Programming

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DJaK2uHFj0

Former WCW President Eric Bischoff feels his ideas from Monday Nitro still influence what we see on WWE television today.

In an interview with Sports Illustrated this week, Bischoff talked about the impact of what he did on some of WWE’s current ideas. He says WWE only embraced more of a “realty-based” approach to wrestling years after he did it. Bischoff says even though WWE may have done it better, he knows where it came from. Bischoff also took credit for RAW still airing live on Mondays.

“The fact there is a live show on Monday is a direct result of what I established and what I did to overcome them in the ratings,” Bischoff said. “They reluctantly brought in the cruiserweights they brought in the Rey Mysterios, the Chris Jerichos, the Dean Malenkos–that had that style of wrestling even though they didn’t brand them the way I did.”

Bischoff expanded on his point about the cruiserweights, explaining that he hired them to kick off the second hour of Nitro with some excitement. He also noted that he was the first one in wrestling to call them “cruiserweights,” because he thought it sounded cooler than “junior heavyweights” or “light heavyweights.”

“At that time, I had a three hour show from 8pm-11pm. It was easy to kick off the show hot, because we weren’t against the competition at that time, but to sustain a three hour show without a lot of diversity in our presentation was a real challenge. That’s why I wanted my cruiserweights to be live on television at exactly nine o’clock. We formatted our shows so that, at nine o’clock, we were in the heat of hard-hitting, fast-paced cruiserweight action, and it was so different from the WWE that it worked.”

New Details On WWE’s Upcoming DVD Set About Eric Bischoff

WWE will be releasing Eric Bischoff – Sports Entertainment’s Most Controversial Figure on DVD & Blu-Ray on June 7th in the U.S. and June 13th in the U.K. The new DVD set follows Bischoff filming over two hours of separate content for the WWE Network in 2015.

Here’s the synopsis for the documentary:

Arguably the most controversial figure to ever step foot in the industry, Eric Bischoff is responsible for some of the most revolutionary moments in sports-entertainment history.

From creating the nWo to battling WWE as the figurehead of WCW during The Monday Night War to being one of the most-hated personalities in both WCW and WWE, Eric Bischoff knew how to get under his rival’s skin while creating his own in your face brand of controversy.

Relive all of Eric Bischoff’s greatest moments and hear stories from the man himself and see why he was appropriately named “The King of Controversy”.

There’s no word on what matches, if any, will be included.

JBL Responds To Vince Russo’s Comments About His “Legends” Show On WWE Network

https://youtu.be/ifIAj9YN0fI

WWE announcer and host of his own new WWE Network show took exception to comments made about the program, called “Legends With JBL,” from former WWE, WCW and TNA writer Vince Russo.

JBL wrote a lengthy explanation in response to comments made by Russo about JBL’s past shows with the man who helped WCW finally overtake WWE as the biggest national wrestling company, Eric Bischoff.

Featured above are the original comments made on video by Vince Russo, which were released back in September, and below is JBL’s response, which he posted on his Facebook page on Saturday.

“I saw the comments Vince Russo made about the interview I did with Eric Bischoff. I want to address a couple of points. Mr Russo said that Eric decided to appear on WWE programming-this is true, but at my request ,this was NOT Eric’s idea, it was mine. Eric is a friend and I knew he would be a great interview. To take WCW from losing $10 million to making $40+ million in five years is one of greatest stories in history. I wanted to capture this…and we did.

I am very proud of this interview. I understand Mr Russo is not happy with the content of some of Eric’s comments. I felt Eric was honest, I have known Eric for some time-I have a ton of respect for him. However, there is two sides to every story. What Eric did is incredible, I wanted this on record. For the record-I believe Eric.

It is no secret that Mr Russo and I don’t like each other, but that being said-I have no problem asking him on a show and letting him say whatever he wants. Mr Russo and I have both gotten older and hopefully wiser-would love him on a future show. I have zero animosity to Mr Russo—I am getting old:)

The other point is that Eric made money on the interview-I know his pay and it was done for history and not for money. Same as I did some other great interviews that are ‘in the can’, I want to preserve history and show honor and respect to legends with this format, it’s not about money…trust me:) It’s some of the highest watched shows on the Network.

I asked for this format to record history and honor legends-Eric fits both. Proud of my friend, Eric, for what he has done, I thought I was fair with the interview. Would be honored to have Vince Russo on the show as well-and would treat him with respect as well.

BTW, I am not asking for Mr Russo to come on the show-I am not, happy if he did, but not seeking him to come on show. He seems to be doing fine doing what he is doing, and I am happy working with at risk kids in Bermuda on my days off and certainly not asking for more work as every day I do a network show takes away from work with kids who really need my help!”

Video: Kurt Angle On Impact Hulk Hogan & Eric Bischoff Had On TNA

https://youtu.be/Ek_BHOl96G4

Kurt Angle recently spoke with the folks at WrestleTalk TV about the impact Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff had on TNA — both negative and positive — when they had their run in the promotion. Below are some of the highlights from the interview, which you can watch above.

On Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff costing TNA money:

“I love Hogan, I love Bischoff. Never had problems with either of them. Terry, we’ve always been close. I believe they did good for the company, TNA. I believe it was very expensive. They probably came up with the idea of TNA traveling town to town every week. It’s a great idea, but where are you going to get the money?”

On TNA going on the road nearly causing the company to go out of business:

“I think it really put the company in a position where it almost went under again. I know it went under at the very beginning, but it looked like it was about to go under again. TNA is a great company, but it’s not a WWE. We don’t have the extra funds to take chances, to waste a few million today and tomorrow will be fine. Every penny counts.”

On Hogan and Bischoff ultimately being good for TNA despite making decisions that cost the company a lot of money:

“Eric Bischoff and Hulk Hogan were very good for our company. Did they spend a lot of money? Yes. I’m sure it cost a lot of money to get them in there, and I’m sure they had ideas that cost us a lot of money. It was a good thing and somewhat of a bad thing, but I love the guys.”

WWE Releasing New Brock Lesnar Documentary DVD In 2016

WWE is planning on releasing a new Brock Lesnar DVD and Blu-ray set in 2016, according to a new report from WrestlingDVDNetwork.com. The last Lesnar DVD, “Here Comes The Pain,” came out in 2003 and was re-released as a Collector’s Edition in 2012.

The new Lesnar DVD and Blu-ray fills one of the last two slots on WWE’s 2016 “Home Video” schedule. The set appears to be a compilation of matches and moments, with all-new documentary footage of Lesnar’s life and career.

As previously reported, WWE is also planning on releasing documentary sets on Eric Bischoff, Scott Hall, The Dudley Boyz and possibly Shane McMahon in 2016.

WWE Talent Told To Have No Contact With Hulk Hogan, Flair Interviews Bischoff

– WWE talent, including those who are from previous eras and are no longer wrestling but are still affiliated with company through Legends deals or other ways, were told to not have any contact with Hulk Hogan.

There are those who have talked about the situation as a double standard, as WWE has immortalized Ultimate Warrior now, cleaned up his past, given him a statue, all the while the feeling is he said things as bad, if not worse and was public with his comments as opposed to private.

– Former WCW president Eric Bischoff is the guest on the latest edition of Ric Flair’s “Woo Nation” podcast. As Bischoff and Flair have been involved in lawsuits and heated battles over the years, part one of Flair’s two-part conversation with Bischoff should be a fun episode for fans. Mick Foley Writes About Recent Incident With Drunken Fan

WWE Hall Of Famer Mick Foley recently updated his official Facebook page, blogging about an incident he had with a fan during a recent Q&A session.

“The Hardcore Legend” wrote the following:

NAME YOUR TOP 5 ANNOUNCERS OF ALL-TIME

Last night, the Q&A session at the “#FiftyYearsOfFoley” show threatened to get ugly, when a lad, with the help of a few too many pints took great exception to my oft-stated stance that #WWEHOF announcer Jim Ross is the best wrestling announcer of all time. The lad was a little tough to understand…sometimes a few extra pints will do that to a guy. But in the end with great concentration I grasped the point he seemed to be so desperately trying to make: my belief that JR is the greatest Wrestling commentator of all time was downright offensive to him and his earnest belief that the duo of Bobby “The Brain” Heenan and Gorilla Monsoon were the greatest announcers of all time.

I broke the tense standoff the only way I knew how. “Dude”, I said. “These are OPINIONS. They’re not facts. You are entitled to your opinion – and I’m entitled to mine, right?”

Thankfully, the guy calmed down, apologized for creating a disturbance. I shook his hand and headed back to the stage. I heard him call out to me.

“Mick?”

“Yeah?”

“Do you think Eric Bischoff was underrated as an announcer?”

I had him thrown out of the building immediately.

From there, Foley asked fans to engage, telling them to vote on who they feel the top-five best pro wrestling announcers of all-time are. You can post your top five on Foley’s page by clicking here.

Glacier Talks About Being Grilled By Eric Bischoff In WCW, Money Spent On His Character

Former WCW character Glacier recently appeared as a guest on The Two Man Power Trip Of Wrestling podcast. Below are some of the highlights from the interview.

On who made the initial introduction to Eric Bischoff: “Dallas (Page) and I had become good friends. We would work out together at Main Event which was a gym that everybody was working out at then. I had mentioned that I was going to start using martial arts in ring and he mentioned that (Eric) was into all of that stuff. So we scheduled a meeting and in January I had literally a three hour meeting with him and he grilled me up and down. At the end of that conversation he said I want to sign you to a contract and he asked if I was wrestling on the Independent scene and I had been wrestling there a lot. I remember him saying to cancel all my bookings on the Independent scene and totally disappear and I remember saying I can do that and just totally disappear.”

On the work that went into creating the gimmick and the characters: “I got to know (Chris) Kanyon, Bryan Clark and I were already friends and I got to know Ernest (Miller) and we quickly all kind of gelled together as a unit. Chris and I became very good friends all the way up until he passed away. For Chris and I this was it, we may only get this one shot so we didn’t take it lightly at all and Page was assigned to oversee it all. We were at the Power Plant everyday, all day and then we would all meet up and watch the videos of the day and then be back at the Power Plant the next day and did that for months before we ever went on TV. We put a lot of hard work into that, just figuring out who the gimmicks were. Eric’s whole thing was it’s like a video game come to life but said I want you guys to play it very serious. At the end of the day did it become exactly what I thought it could be, no. But it was an unbelievable opportunity to break new ground in wrestling, the Glacier entrance broke new ground in wrestling, I was the first guy to wrestle with a colored contact and I was definitely the first guy to have arena snow when I came out.”

On the money spent by WCW to bring Glacier to life: “I tell people all the time, that armor all together weighs over twenty pounds. For an entrance it’s no big deal but for a three hour appearance it’s a big deal to wear it. I actually became friends with the head of AFX Studios, he was a young and upcoming artist and really creative, I introduced him to Eric and they decided to go with him for the persona’s of all four of the gimmicks and they spent a lot of money. I can confirm that I saw all the invoices he submitted to WCW and it was around $35,000 for the creation of the Glacier “look”. Keith Mitchell has looked me right in the eye and said that my entrance was close to $400,000 and almost $10,000 every time I came on TV. I’m glad I didn’t know all of that back then.”

On the impact made by Glacier and how has the WWE Network helped his legacy: “The costume, when I do appearances was built to be durable. Almost twenty years later I still have the full costume and when WCW folded they never asked for it back. I have one of the original masks that I got back then, one of the three I had originally got. Thank GOD I still look somewhat like I did on TV back in the day and am not the three-hundred pound Glacier. With the WWE Network and them replaying some of our stuff it’s a huge thrill for me now to be able to go out and make appearances and still be Glacier because a lot of wrestlers never get that opportunity, there gimmick comes and goes and is forgotten. I am so fortunate that people remembered it and still appreciate it.”

Eric Bischoff Addresses Hogan Controversy, Says WWE Handled It Well

Hulk Hogan’s longtime business associate Eric Bischoff recently spoke to the folks at Under The Mat Radio about the controversy surrounding “The Hulkster” over the past week.

“Well, first of all, I think WWE handled it the only way they could,” Bischoff said. “In the entertainment business, especially when you’re a publicly held company, you have to be sensitive not only to your audience, but you have to be sensitive to your advertisers. You have to be sensitive to your business partners.”

Bischoff continued, “You have to be sensitive and respectful of so many different people within the business of the entertainment business that you have to be responsible and you have to take responsible action, and I think that’s exactly what WWE did. I don’t see how they possibly could have kept Hulk in the position that Hulk was in as a quote-unquote ambassador of their company with the kind of horrible publicity that is surrounding him now and will like surround him for quite awhile given everything that is going on.”
