Honoring “Mean” Gene Okerlund

There was an outpouring of support and appreciation for Okerlund when news of his passing broke.

“A voice and sound track to an entire era of our industry. He was the star of some of @WWE’s most memorable segments. “Mean Gene” was beloved by all who got to work with him. Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time,” Triple H Tweeted.

“Just heard Mean Gene Okerlund has passed away,” Tweeted Steve Austin. “As an interviewer, pitch man, announcer, or host, he was untouchable. Simply the best. Total professional with quick wit, sarcasm, humor, and that golden voice.
Condolences to his friends and family.”

WWE Hall Of Famer Reportedly Set For Raw (Potential Spoiler)

WWE could be bringing in another big name for this Monday’s Raw. According to a report from PW Insider, Ric Flair is booked for the show. WWE is bringing Hulk Hogan in for the show as well, reportedly as part of a planned tribute for “Mean” Gene Okerlund.

Ric Flair Pays Tribute To “Mean” Gene Okerlund

Flair is likely coming in to pay tribute to “Mean” Gene Okerlund. He paid tribute to his friend earlier this week as well. Speaking to Sports Illustrated, Flair said the following:

“Friend would be too generic a term for us,” said Flair. “We were more than friends, we were brothers. We were tied to each other for years. If I was going somewhere, and I knew Gene Okerlund was there, I made sure I found him.”

“In my opinion, Gene Okerlund added more entertainment to the business than anybody. Gene made our product better. You can be good at what you do, but Gene was so good that he made the people around him better. Gene brought that to every segment he was on for his entire career. It’s hard to explain how much talent he had. Gene was entertainment-ready, witty beyond belief, sophisticated, and I’ve never seen anybody else like him.”

Ric Flair On Raw

This Monday’s show will take place from the Amway Center in Orlando, Fl. Also booked for the show is John Cena’s return to Raw. Cena was also on last week’s Smackdown. The Revival will take on Roode and Gable in a lumberjack match for the Raw tag titles this week as well. Alexa Bliss will also debut a new talk show “A Moment of Bliss” on this week’s show.

Gene Okerlund Receives 10-Bell Salute At NXT Show (Video), Cena Looking Ripped

As many of you already know, WWE Hall Of Famer “Mean” Gene Okerlund passed away earlier this week. Okerlund passed in a Florida hospital with his wife by his side early Wednesday morning. The professional wrestling world has been mourning the loss of Okerlund this week.

In fact, Hulk Hogan will be making his highly-anticipated return to RAW to honor his longtime friend. With that being said, Okerlund was honored with a 10-bell salute during a recent NXT live show yesterday. Check out the video here below:

16-time WWE World Champion John Cena is looking absolutely jacked. “The Leader Of The Cenation” just returned from China, where he seemingly lived for several months filming his upcoming “Project X” movie with Jackie Chan. He has also been doing a lot of promotional work for his new “Bumblebee” movie, which is currently in theaters.

Now, Cena will be making an appearance on Sheamus’ “Celtic Warrior Workouts” YouTube series. Sheamus took to Twitter to plug the episode, sharing a photo of himself and Cena. In the picture, Cena looks to be in tremendous shape:

“*Drum Roll* The 1st Episode of 2019 will be with none other than John Cena (guy in the photo you Can’t See). We’re going Brave Change LARGE in 19. Sub Now.”

Hulk Hogan Returning To RAW Monday

Earlier this week the sad news broke that WWE Hall Of Famer “Mean” Gene Okerlund passed away at 76. Okerlund was reportedly dealing with several health issues. He was put in a nursing home after suffering a bad fall and breaking some ribs. After having trouble breathing he was hospitalized in Florida and later passed with his wife by his side early Wednesday morning.

The professional wrestling world has been mourning the loss of, arguably, the greatest ring announcer in the history of the industry. One of those mourners being Hall Of Famer Hulk Hogan. Yesterday, Hogan took to Twitter to offer some thoughts on Okerlund’s recent passing. Here’s what he had to say:

“The best partner I ever had. We never rehearsed or did anything scripted from a writer. Gene would ask me “hey big man what do u want to do?” I would always answer “just follow you brother” and it worked from 1980 – 2017. RIP my brother HH”

Now, it looks like Hogan will be making his return to WWE TV next week. WWE announced on Twitter that Hogan will return Monday to help honor Okerlund on RAW:

This will be Hogan’s first appearance on WWE TV since serving as the host of WWE Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia this past November. Hogan only made a brief appearance to kick off the show, where he cut a promo.

What do you think about Hogan returning to RAW next week?

“Mean” Gene Okerlund Passes Away At 76

The professional wrestling world has lost a legend today (Wed. January 2, 2019). WWE has announced that Hall Of Famer “Mean” Gene Okerlund has passed away at the age of 76-years-old. After leaving the radio industry, Okerlund began his professional wrestling career with the American Wrestling Association (AWA) in 1970. He remained there for 14 years before accepting a job with WWE in 1984.

Okerlund remained with WWE until his deal expired in 1993 when he made the decision to venture off to World Championship Wrestling (WCW) after WWE did not offer him a renewal. Throughout his career, Okerlund solidified himself as, arguably, the greatest ring announcer and interviewer professional wrestling has ever seen.

In 2001 Okerlund returned to WWE and had made sporadic appearances for the company over the next 17 years. In April of 2006, Okerlund was inducted into the WWE Hall Of Fame.

He also inducted Mr. T into the HOF in April of 2014 just before WrestleMania 30. His latest WWE appearance came at the RAW 25th anniversary special last January when he interviewed then-WWE Champion AJ Styles.

We here at SEScoops would like to offer our deepest condolences to Okerlund’s family during this difficult time.

“Mean” Gene Okerlund Remembers The Late “Rowdy” Roddy Piper

WWE Hall Of Famer “Mean” Gene Okerlund spoke with WWE’s Scott Stanford about the passing of “Rowdy” Roddy Piper on PIX11 in New York City on Friday night.

Okerlund commented on his reaction when he got the news about Piper’s passing.

“Oh my god… totally devastated because Scott, this is the third in a row for me in the last six and a half weeks,” said Okerlund. “First of course Verne Gagne, secondly a few weeks back we lost “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes. This one hits hard like the other two, and all of the guys we’ve lost in recent years.”

“Mean” Gene also spoke about something we will always remember about “The Hot Rod.”

“I think the one thing that’s going to be a big part of his legacy, he kind of sheltered his family from the business, at least until recently,” said Okerlund. “He was a very good father. He had a son Colt and three daughters, and a lovely young lady by the name of Kitty, his wife and only wife. We hear about a lot of relationships going south in a big hurry but Roddy was very tight and loved his family dearly.”

Poffo Says Randy Savage/Stephanie McMahon Rumor Isn’t True, Legends Share Savage Memories

Sports Illustrated Extra’s “Mustard Blog” recently put together a lengthy piece on 2015 WWE Hall Of Famer “Macho Man” Randy Savage, talking to a number of WWE legends about the iconic performer. Below are some of the highlights.

Jerry Lawler on working with Savage:

“The first time we worked together, when it was ‘promotion against promotion,’ we sold out at the arena with 23,000 people. That was unheard of in wrestling. But Randy was so cool. He was a great athlete, and he was a little bit out there. He had a bit of a temper, and he was moody at times, but he was his own guy. I really grew to respect him.”

Steve Austin on Savage:

“Macho Man, that guy’s stuff back when he was in Tennessee, was incredible. His intensity, his promo style—he was the Macho Man 24/7, 365—and he was that before he got to the WWF. Vince [McMahon] didn’t make him, he made himself. Vince then made him a superstar all over the world.”

Gene Okerlund, Hulk Hogan and Ted DiBiase on Savage’s relationship with Miss Elizabeth:

Okerlund: “Randy was a loose cannon. In the early days, Randy was very protective of Elizabeth to the point where it bothered a lot of the boys. But what could you do, take it to Vince McMahon and make yourself look like a powder puff? You just ignored it and worked with it.”

Hogan: “If you even looked at Elizabeth the wrong way, then, Holy s—. Randy would freak out. If you ever wanted to get him lit up, you’d just have to look at Liz.”

DiBiase: “I would never consider having my wife around a bunch of wrestlers. Randy tried to protect Elizabeth, but that created some tension between the two of them.”

Daniel Bryan on Savage:

“I’d love to be this era’s Macho Man. There are a lot of similarities between the two of us. He was so good and just had that connection with the crowd. You can watch him to this day, he’s so entertaining.”

Ric Flair on his WrestleMania VIII match against Savage:

“We brought the best out in each other. When you have that kind of chemistry and respect for each other, it doesn’t take a lot of thought-process to go out there and make music in the ring. Randy was still playing minor league baseball when I first met him. I was there in his corner during his infancy in the business, saw him blossom and become so much better. I was proud of him, and wrestling him at WrestleMania was awesome.”

Sting on his friendship with Savage:

“Randy Savage, ironically, is one of the guys I looked up to. I loved him. He was so out far out there with his character. There was something about it I could identify with. I used to tease him a little bit in the dressing room in front of all the guys, and say, ‘Come on, just talk in your normal voice.’ ‘This is my normal voice, what are you talking about?,’ he’d say. It was funny. We’d always try to get him, but I never heard him talk any other way than just like this, brother! Living the character helped him, absolutely it did.”

Lanny Poffo on a Triple H interview that led to a the infamous Stephanie McMahon rumor, which Lanny says is not true:

“A reporter asked [WWE heavyweight champion] Triple H what he thought of Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage. Triple H responded with, ‘They were great, but they’re dinosaurs.’ Randy saw this as a deliberate attempt to hurt his brand. Randy insinuated he [wanted] to take Triple H, slap him in the face, take his girl, Stephanie McMahon [the daughter of Vince McMahon and the wife of Triple H], and drive her around the block, then give her back to him,” Lanny says. “It wasn’t right, but Randy was provoked.”

  • “Mean” Gene Okerlund Speaks On Legends House, Warrior/HOF, Hogan’s Return

The following are highlights of a recent interview with WWE Hall Of Famer “Mean” Gene Okerlund:

On WWE Network: “I think this is gonna go down, probably, when we look back at it, I may not be here, for that matter, you guys may not be here, but if you look at 30-40 years from now, it’s revolutionary. And who knows if the internet is gonna be here 30-40 years from now. Things change.”

On Legends House: “We did it in March and April of 2012. So you’re taking a look at pretty close to two years, but it’s been kept under wraps, and that’s beyond me because I’m on the inside track in the company…” The producers took away cell phones, computers, televisions and newspapers and they tried to get you pissed off at each other. And it worked for some of us, but I’m a kind of a low profile older guy, so it didn’t, but Pat Patterson and I had a wonderful time.”

On Old School RAW: “I love Old School Raw. It’s great to see the young guys… and young divas, that’s not beyond me, but I think it kind of mells the old with the new. I mean, you’ve got a Piper, you’ve got some of these new guys, The Shield, and of course some of these old time guys who are kind of the stalwarts of the company, you know, Hunter, certainly John Cena, but I think there’s something to be extracted from the past and what it delivers to a current audience. Becauase a lot of these people grew up with Piper, they grew up with Hogan, they grew up with the Macho Man, they grew up with a guy who’s going to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, The Ultimate Warrior, and why the hell that’s happening is beyond me!”

On Ultimate Warrior: “Well, you know what, he was a huge draw for a limited amount of time. He was a World Heavyweight Champion, and I remember riding back in the car with Hogan when we left Toronto and went to Syracuse, New York, you know, he had some bad feelings about it.”

On if Ultimate Warrior going over Hulk Hogan was best for business: “Well, you know, I really tend to go with the feelings of the company. I was told this was gonna happen and this is the way it’s gonn be. We did interviews actually before the event, not that I’m letting the cat out of the bag, I would say that Hogan was against that move at that time… and he was probably right.”

On if he feels Hulk Hogan will be returning: “I kind of have to say that my hunch is, you might be seeing him shortly.”

  • Several AWA & WWE Legends Pay Homage To The Late “Mad Dog” Vachon

SESCOOPS.COM reader Neal Jones sent along the following:

Recap of “Mad Dog” Vachon tribute on In Your Head Wrestling Radio, 11/27/2013
    by Vic Schiavone

Hosts Jack E. Jones and One Inch Biceps paid tribute to the late Maurice “Mad Dog” Vachon, who passed away on November 21, 2013. Several associates of the Mad Dog shared their memories of working with him.

    Highlights included the following:

Baron von Raschke (former tag-team partner):

“Our tag team clicked immediately…the people would go crazy. And usually, the Mad Dog loved heat; so he kept letting it build and letting it build and letting it build. And I didn’t know any better, so I kept helping him build it and build it. For three months during the summer, the first summer I was there, we had a riot every night wherever we were. The matches always ended in a riot; we had to fight our way out of the ring. We even had a cage match…and they put up the cage and the babyfaces got in the cage. We started to come toward the ring, and before we got to the ring the people got so excited they tore the cage down…We had a lot of heat in that territory.”

    Danny Hodge:

“He was mad and terrific…I would put him right up at the top. He was a heck of a wrestler; a heck of a guy…he was a tough cookie…He had strength, he had knowledge, he had conditioning; he was there for the fight.”

    Ox Baker:

“One of the true gentlemen in wrestling, and a legend, was Mad Dog Vachon…In the ring, he was surpassed by nobody.”

    Nick Bockwinkel:

“He set his own tempo, and he cut his own path…He was respected without any question as far as his talent; his style and his class was all his own. I can’t deny him one ounce of space, because if you wanted a complete rugged SOB he would be the man.”

    The Destroyer (Dick Beyer):

“I’m wrestling the Mad Dog in his hometown…and he was a babyface. So when he got in the middle of the ring, the Mad Dog says to me, ‘We got to give them a barnburner here. They expect that we’re going to knock the hell out of each other.’ So we started out the match wrestling, and then all of a sudden it was kick, stomp, throw out of the ring…Mad Dog came out, he hit me with a chair, and out the aisle we went. We ended up in the dressing room fighting, and I yelled… ‘Mad Dog, there’s no people here! It’s just the boys; let’s get the hell out in the arena!’ So we finished off the match…we gave them what Mad Dog wanted; he wanted a barnburner and we gave them a barnburner. Mad Dog I think carried it a little bit too far.”

    “Mean Gene” Okerlund:

“Mad Dog was probably the consummate interview guy. Whether it was behind the cage or it was in a workshop trying to construct a coffin, or whatever it happened to be, he was a classic in every sense of the word…I think what everybody has said about him is what it is. He was kind of a favorite of mine and I think he was a favorite of the boys in the locker room, and certainly even though the fans at one time or another probably hated him vehemently, he ended up being kind of the guy that they loved to hate.”

Remembering The Twin Hebner Angle And Hogan’s First Title Loss

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY, HULK HOGAN LOSES HIS MIND (AND THE WWF TITLE)

“HOW MUCH MONEY DID THEY SPEND ON THE PLASTIC SURGERY??!”

Those infamous words were uttered by Hulk Hogan on national television 25 years ago today. And astonishingly, Hulk wasn’t referring to his (now ex) wife and her friend when he said that. No, you see, he was referring to the evil trio of Ted DiBiase, Andre the Giant and… EARL HEBNER! What? Earl Hebner, evil? Bret Hart would find out years later exactly how evil Dave Hebner’s baby brother really could be, but let it be known that Hulk Hogan was the original Screwjob victim way back in 1988 when INXS had the #1 hit single in America and the Road Warriors made it cool to wear Zubaz pants.

Here in 2013, Chris Daniels and Frankie Kazarian are trying hard to make Zubaz cool again, but it’s just not the same.

So, why then was the Hulkster ranting and raving like a mental patient about plastic surgery? Let’s set the stage. The date was February 5th. The WWF had been airing taped “Saturday Night’s Main Event” specials on NBC for a few years by this point. As a young wrasslin’ fan, I have fond memories of those shows. The sight of Andre the Giant sneaking up behind an unsuspecting Hogan, following his victory over King Kong Bundy, and wrapping his massive hands around Hogan’s throat, squeezing the life out of him, gave me nightmares. But this show was different. This show, dubbed simply “The Main Event”, aired live on Friday night (back when Friday was perhaps the best night for television) and would feature the first singles meeting between Andre and the champion since their epic encounter at WrestleMania III the previous year.

WWF and NBC hit a homerun that night. The show would do a 15.2 rating, good for 33 million viewers (that number is a bit skewed and likely also includes international viewers, so figure half that number were watching in the U.S. – still impressive), making the Hogan vs. Andre sequel the most watched wrestling match in history, a record that still stands today. Hulk Hogan had headlined as WWF champion for four consecutive years and was arguably at his peak of popularity. Andre, on the other hand, was clearly in physical decline and had long past his peak. In fact, he was barely mobile. One memorable spot from their match saw Andre simply fall face down in what the announcers could only describe as an attempted headbutt (he missed). And maybe it was, but it looked terrible. In fact, as a wrestling match, this pretty much sucked. But with these two guys in the ring, it was never about workrate. That’s what guys like Savage and Steamboat and Santana were there for.

As the match drew to a close, Andre grabbed Hogan and flung him around in the worst excuse for a hip toss I’ve ever seen in my life. As he covered the champion and the referee began to count, Hogan got his shoulder up off the mat, but Hebner kept counting. Just like that, Hogan’s run came to a screeching halt at 1,474 days and Andre was awarded the title.

I guess in hindsight, CM Punk’s 14-month reign ending on a People’s Elbow doesn’t seem nearly as ludicrous.

After the match, Gene Okerlund interviewed Andre, who inexplicably talked about winning the World tag team championship (?!!) and proceeded to surrender the tag team title (don’t look at me, that’s what he said) to Ted DiBiase. And I must say, the title looked awfully good around DiBiase’s waist. I believe he got to defend the title at some house shows in the days that followed before Jack Tunney officially declared the title vacant, but it really is a shame he never had a run on top.

As Hogan stood flabbergasted by what had just taken place, THE GOOD HEBNER emerged to confront his evil twin. It’s funny because, while Dave and Earl do look very much alike, I never had much trouble discerning one from the other, even as a kid. Dave was always the pudgier one. Maybe he was simply big-boned. Whatever the case, when Hogan turned around, he could not believe his eyes, nor could he tell one from the other. He figured it out when Earl knocked his brother to the mat and caved in his ribcage with a wicked kick (supposedly breaking a rib legit). Now, Hogan figured it out. He hoisted Earl high above his head, got a running head start, and proceeded to overshoot his target by a country mile, sending Earl SOARING into the aisleway over everyone’s head (including Andre, and he was a giant!). They were supposed to catch him, but hey, shit happens.

Backstage with Mean Gene, Hogan was a wreck. He was so distraught, he was literally in tears over this grave injustice that had just been committed. It’s too bad The Shield came 20 years too late. Maybe they could have helped prevent all of this. As Hogan whined and cried about plastic surgery, he talked about seeing both Hebners for the first time, exclaiming, “When I turned around, they were identical. IDENTICUUUUULLLL!!!!” Moments later, as they showed a replay in slow-mo of the finish, Hogan desperately tried pointing out to us all the hundred dollar bills falling out of the referee’s pocket. Okerlund didn’t have the heart to tell the big guy that, in fact, there were no hundred dollar bills. As hilarious as this all was, Hogan was a pathetic mess here. Between this and his temper tantrum at the 1992 Royal Rumble when he helped Flair eliminate Sid (who did nothing wrong!), I’m not sure how I was ever a fan of this man.

By the way, there’s a little “easter egg” of sorts to watch for on this show. Prior to his title defense, WWF shot to a pre-taped Hulk Hogan interview backstage. In it, he can be seen wearing what has since been dubbed as the “Hogan ‘87” belt. Yet moments later, when he emerges from the curtain, he’s wearing the Winged Eagle belt that would become synonymous with the company over the next decade. Not sure if the ’87 belt held out for more money before Hogan walked out or mouthed off to the wrong person, but it was never seen again.

A quarter century ago on this date, history was made. Hogan lost his smile. The plastic surgery was bought and paid for. And Andre won the tag team title. A memorable night, indeed.
