Goldust Talks About Wrestling At Starrcade As Dustin Rhodes

WWE.com caught up with Goldust, who returned as “The Natural” Dustin Rhodes at Saturday night’s WWE Starrcade one-night special event at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina, to discuss the significance and importance of the event to him on a personal level.

Goldust discussed his late father, “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes, being honored at the event and what it felt like to be at a Starrcade show for the first time-ever without his father.

Regarding the event itself as a whole, Goldust stated, “It was pretty special.” In discussing his father, Goldust replied, “It’s like when he was with me and Cody, and we fought The Shield, it was special. Every time I’ve been with him in the ring, it was special.”

Goldust continued, “But tonight, he wasn’t there, and it was very emotional for me. Standing behind the video wall, listening to the package they put out of dad and knowing all those promos by heart. Just listening to it was just ‘Wow, this is so surreal’ and it just brought it back. It’s been almost three years since he’s been gone and it was just incredible.”

Dustin Rhodes Recalls The Day He Was Told About His Goldust Character

Wrestling legend Goldust was a recent guest on Edge and Christian’s E&C’s Pod of Awesomeness and spoke in-depth about the early days of his controversial character. Goldust, who had previously wrestled in WCW and the WWF as Dustin Rhodes, revealed that he was naive upon learning the character’s androgynous nature but decided to embrace the opportunity and was surprised to see how much heat it drew.

“Me and my dad, we were kind of not on the best of terms at that point. I’d just gotten released from WCW, so I’m sitting at home and Vince calls and he presents this idea. He and Bruce Prichard were on the phone. He kept saying ‘This is an androgynous character,’ and I’m just agreeing with him, but I have no idea what the hell that means. So I’m like ‘Yeah, sure. I’ll give this a try,’ because I really wanted to try to do something on my own other than the Dustin Rhodes name. Try to accomplish something that is fresh and new and then go from there and see if I could do that.

“So I hung up the phone with them after agreeing to meet and sit down with all the music and costuming and all that crap that they do up there in Stamford. I open up the dictionary to look and see what ‘Androgynous’ was. I shook my head, I’m like ‘Oh well, I can’t back out now. Let’s go,’ and just give it my all. For the first six months of doing it, it was very tough because I’d always been a babyface. He wanted me to be a heel and I had to figure out this character with the wig and the robe and the double entendre promos and things like that.

“Savio Vega kept pushing me and kept pushing me as he was teaching me too, how to be a heel and things. ‘Let’s just try this tonight. We’re locked up, you go behind me and rub up and down my chest,’ and I’m just like ‘No, man, no.’ So finally one night in the Garden, the first time I did it and Vince was there. That’s when he used to go and hang out and watch the shows with the boys. He was one of the boys. It was fun for him. I decided to do it in the Garden, and I went behind Savio and I rubbed off his chest with both hands and down. He busted away from me and looked at me and I just ran. I scooted out of the ring and the place just erupted man. I was like ‘Holy s**t, that was easy.’ They’re screaming all kinds of horrible things.

“Now you do that today and they’re just going to like not care or whatever because it’s so accepted in our society. But back then, they hated that. So I took that first big, giant boo from the whole building and especially in the Garden where they don’t like that kind of s**t, and I went ‘Wow, that was easy.’ So we continued and Savio said ‘I told you so, man, I told you,’ and he kind of led me into a couple more things during that match and it just worked so well and I was like ‘Wow man, this is really fun. I can grab hold of this and do something with it.’”

Other topics discussed include his famous Hollywood Backlot Brawl vs. Roddy Piper at WrestleMania XII and the longevity of his career. You can listen to the full episode here:

Goldust Talks Vince McMahon Taking Him & Roddy Piper To The Hospital After WrestleMania

WWE Superstar Goldust was recently a guest on former WWE Tag Team Champions Edge and Christian’s podcast, E&C’s Pod Of Awesomeness, to talk about several professional wrestling topics. Goldust discussed his famous Hollywood Backlot Brawl with WWE Hall Of Famer Roddy Piper from WrestleMania 12, how he got to know Piper better during the feud, wanting to get color in the match despite Vince McMahon’s wishes, hitting Piper with a car, and Vince McMahon taking he and Piper to the hospital after the match. Here are the highlights:

Getting to know Piper better during their feud:

“That’s where I really got to know Roddy and kind of get close to him. And, man, he was gung-ho and ready to go. I didn’t really find out until the TV, I think, when [WWE personnel] came up to me and said, ‘you’re flying to L.A. with Vince [McMahon] and Bruce [Prichard] and Roddy after our TV.’ And I’m like, ‘okay, what are we doing?’ I don’t have any idea what I’m doing, so I was going to go shoot this backlot brawl with Roddy Piper. I was like, ‘wow, this is pretty awesome.’ Yeah, I was just like a kid in a candy store, man and it was very cool.”

Wanting to bleed in the match despite Vince McMahon’s wishes:

“I was really wanting to get some juice back then, really badly. Vince did not want it, so I asked Roddy to open me up the hard way. And that was my way of, ‘okay, Goddang it! I’m going to do bleed whether you like it or not because I want to blade. It gets you into it more. And so [Piper] slammed me up on the hood [of the car]. That’s the only thing I told Roddy about this whole thing: ‘please, hit me. Bust me open.’ And you’d think that Roddy being in the [professional wrestling] business for has long as he had, he would know how to do that, right?

“So he put me on the hood, and he mounts me, and I’m ready for it, man. He’s looking straight at me and he throws his fist straight down, but he hits me square in the forehead and I mean hard. It’s like a brick hitting cement. And I’m just like, ‘what the hell?’ And still in my head, ‘ah, nothing, man.’ He’s still beating me up. ‘Do it again!’ He reaches up and he drills me again and you hear a crack and it’s his hand that breaks on my head.”

Him hitting Piper’s knees with the car despite the planned finish being Piper is supposed to narrowly escape getting hit:

“I started revving up the car and I’m looking at Roddy and he’s probably a good 20 feet away, so I put it in park and I start to drive. I speed up just a little bit and I’m looking dead at him and I’m thinking, ‘please, dear God, move.’ He doesn’t move. He doesn’t move and his knees hit and it just buckled the whole car. It was gross sounding.”

“His knees too, man. I mean, when I watch it back, his fist on my head, you can see it and hear it. You’re not really seeing it or hearing it while it’s happening, but I remember his knees specifically hitting the front of that hood of the car, man, buckling. And I was like, ‘ooh, man. That sounded terrible. I just killed Roddy Piper!'”

Vince McMahon taking both he and Piper to the hospital after the match:

“Vince took us both to the hospital. He had his hand fixed. I had a concussion. One take. One take.” Goldust added, “I went into that dumpster hard too, but I was fine. It was more Roddy’s hand than anything. And Roddy’s tough, man. They didn’t have a cast on his hand. I don’t think. I can’t recall that. He just tapes. That’s the way they did it back then. Those old school guys, they just tape up and go, man.”

Goldust Says One WWE Hall Of Famer Fought Against His Character Backstage

WWE Superstar Goldust recently did an interview on former WWE Tag Team Champions Edge and Christian’s podcast, E&C’s Pod Of Awesomeness, to talk about a variety of professional wrestling topics. Goldust discussed his belief that his character kicked off the Attitude Era, Vince McMahon and Bruce Prichard pitching the character to him, Savio Vega assisting him in developing Goldust, and WWE Hall Of Famer Scott Hall’s issues with the gimmick. Here are the highlights:

His belief that he helped pioneer the kickoff of The Attitude Era:

“Well, I would like to think that [the debut of Goldust in WWE sparked The Attitude Era] too. Everybody else thinks that it was DX and all those other groups and things,” Goldust said. “If anything, I was the definite edge of the spear into The Attitude Era, I believe, so it was way before its time, the stuff I was doing, and it kind of set the tone for what was to come.

Vince McMahon and Bruce Prichard pitching him the Goldust character:

“Me and my dad, we were kind of not on the best of terms at that point,” Goldust noted. “And I had just gotten released from WCW, so it’s like I’m sitting at home and Vince [McMahon] calls and he presents this idea, and then, Bruce Prichard on the phone, he presents this idea. He kept saying, ‘this is an androgynous character’ and I’m just agreeing with him, but I have no idea what the hell that means, so I’m like, ‘yeah, sure.

“I’ll give this a try’ because I really wanted to try to do something on my own other than the Dustin Rhodes name, try to accomplish something that is fresh and new and then go from there and see if I could do that.” Goldust added, “opened up the dictionary and looked to see what ‘androgynous’ was and I just shook my head. I’m like, ‘well, I can’t back out now – let’s go and just give it my all.'”

Savio Vega pushing him to evolve:

“Savio Vega kept pushing me, pushing me as he was teaching me too, how to be a heel and things. And how to… ‘let’s just try this tonight: just, we’ll lock up, you’ll go behind me, rub up and down my chest.’ And I’m just like, ‘no, man, no,’ so finally one night, in The Garden, the first time I did it, and Vince was there. This is when he used to go hang out and watch the shows, the live events, with the boys. He’s one of the boys.

“It was fun for him. And I decided to do it in The Garden and I went behind Savio and I rubbed up his chest and down with both of my hands. And he brushed it away from me and he looked at me and I just ran. I scooted out of the ring and the place just erupted, man. And I was like, ‘holy s–t! That was easy!'”

Scott Hall’s issues with the gimmick:

“Yeah, yeah, Razor wasn’t keen on it, man, and he fought it. I’m just trying to get a character over and do what’s best for the company, best for business, best for me, and I’m young, so I’m not in other people’s point of view sometimes. And even though this business is a work, people take it too seriously.

“For me, it’s probably when I had the most passion for the business and where I did not let the little things get to me, and not care so much about what they’re thinking of me, man, just go out there and do what I can do to perform and put on a great performance, whatever. And to have him kind of, to have Razor be kind of a speed bump, it was frustrating, but we got through it and it ended with a Roddy Piper special because Razor left.”

Goldust Responds To Fans Criticizing WWE

Goldust has been a part of the never-ending feud between Finn Balor and Bray Wyatt recently. First, Bray Wyatt took a towel and rubbed off his face paint. Goldust then asked RAW GM Kurt Angle to face Bray Wyatt as Dustin Rhodes. Angle made the match and Goldust was quickly defeated by Wyatt. Goldust then attacked Finn Balor backstage on Monday’s episode of RAW. This led to a match between Finn and Goldust later on the show.

Finn Balor defeated Goldust rather quickly, but the lights went out in the arena after the match. “He’s got the whole world in his hands” was echoing throughout the arena before Wyatt’s face was briefly shown on the screen laughing. Even though Balor has defeated Bray Wyatt as “The Demon King” and as Finn Balor at No Mercy, his feud with Bray Wyatt seems to be continuing.

Some fans took to Twitter yesterday to complain about the feud and Goldust responded to them:

https://twitter.com/Goldust/status/913136144975585280

Goldust then sent out another tweet later last night stating that fans should enjoy the product WWE puts on for them and that they will not always get what they want.

Cody Rhodes Goes Off on Fan Who Called Goldust a Jobber

Don’t diss Goldust on Twitter, cause Cody Rhodes will have none of it. One fan decided to take a shot at Goldust on Twitter after Monday Night RAW last night (Mon. May 29, 2017), calling the longtime veteran a jobber:

Rhodes soon responded by pleading his brother’s case for the Hall Of Fame and told the fan to ‘kiss my a**’:

Return to the Golden Age: A Retrospective of Goldust’s First WWE Run

Last night on Raw, viewers saw an old-school Goldust style promo, something first brought to WWE over 20 years ago. After splitting with his “Golden Truth” partner, R-Truth, it appears Goldust, as in the old Goldust, might be in line for a push.

Goldust’s First WWE Run

48-year old Dustin Runnels made his WWE debut in 1990. He was wrestling as Dustin Rhodes then, but when he returned to the company 5 years later, they had entirely different plans for him.

The WWE Universe was first introduced to Goldust through a series of bizarre vignettes that began airing in the fall of 1995.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LD_EILhBBGw

He would make his in-ring debut that October, at an In Your House PPV.

The character immediately moved into some controversial storylines. It was heavily alluded to during his feud with Razor Ramon, that Goldust either had a sexual interest in his rival, or was trying to play mind games with him.

Check out Goldust distract Razor Ramon during his match with a young Jeff Hardy:

After feuding with Razor Ramon, Goldust moved into a program with Roddy Piper leading to WrestleMania XII, and their famous “Hollywood Backlot Brawl”.

Over the course of the next year Goldust would feud with various good guys on the roster. A rivalry once built between he and Ahmed Johnson, after Goldust insisted on giving him mouth-to-mouth recitation after having been knocked out.

This led to Ahmed and Goldust meeting at the 1996 King of the Ring:

The First End to Goldust

By 1997 the gimmick was waning a little. Vignettes of a happy Dustin Runnels and wife Terri began to air, as they played up that his true self was a family man. This started a feud with Brian Pillman that would end prematurely due to Brian’s tragic death.

Pillman defeated Goldust at SummerSlam 97, with the stipulation being that Pillman got Marlena (Terri) for 30 days. Pillman died before the conclusion of the angle.

Dustin then ended up turning on Marlena, and ending their marriage in storyline. Their real marriage would end in 1999.

The Artist Formerly Known As Goldust

With the Attitude Era in full-swing, WWE could take the Goldust character farther than they had before. He was paired up with Luna Vachon, and became “the Artist Formerly Known as Goldust”.

WWE ended up landing in some hot water with upset parent groups in the late 90s and certain characters ended up being changed, Goldust’s being one of them.

Dustin Runnels returned, and started to speak out against WWE’s edgy storylines and characters, a subtle shot from WWE to their real-life detractors.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ch2QltZZ7DU

Runnels became a born-again Christian and began speaking of “His Return”. He was speaking about the Goldust character however.

Goldust would feud with Jeff Jarrett and Al Snow in his final months of his first run as the character. He ended up in a rather bizarre angle with the Blue Meanie as well, leading to a match between the two of them at the St. Valentines Day Massacre PPV in 1999. I searched all over YouTube and this angle is nowhere to be found. It’s on the Network however.

Signing with WCW

Dustin signed with WCW in 1999, after Vince Russo took over the booking. Russo tried to re-imagine the Goldust character as a darker more sadistic persona. He was named “Seven”, but after reactions to the vignettes underwhelmed, he simply wrestled as Dustin Runnels until the company went out of business.

His appearance in WCW in 1999 solidified that the initial run of the Goldust character was over. He’d be back in WWE, but his character slowly moved away from edgy towards a comedy act.

That initial first-run of Goldust is one of the most controversial in wrestling history.

Goldust Explains Why he Turned on R-Truth, His Reaction to Jinder Mahal’s WWE Title Win, More

Longtime WWE Superstar Goldust recently did an interview with FOX Sports to talk about a variety of professional wrestling topics. Here are the highlights:

Why he turned on R-Truth:

“I think it stems from the week when we had the tag team turmoil match, and R-Truth fell short. When it really counted, that’s when we needed it. We hadn’t as a tag team had a title shot. We kept losing, and he lost that one opportunity for us. That just sent me over the edge, and I’d had enough. He’s holding me back. It’s time to get back to my roots.”

What the highest point of The Golden Truth’s run was:

“You know, we had a lot of fun early on doing the backstage thing. It was funny, it was entertaining… and then somewhere along the way, R-Truth was trying to oversee everything instead of letting things organically fit together for us as a team. He stopped communicating with me about the way things were done. He saw it one way, he wanted to do it his way.

“And his way… to me, when you’ve been in the business for as long as I have, wasn’t the right way. I’ve done that, I know exactly what to do. In a sense, he was holding me back.”

His reaction to Jinder Mahal’s WWE Title win:

“I flew in last night, I was watching it on the WWE Network. I watched the whole show. As I was watching it, I was like ‘man, this crowd is electric.’ Chicago, to me, is the best wrestling crowd on the planet. They are the best. They are loud, they are ruthless, and they will tear you down if you let them. That crowd is the best, and that building is electric.

“And to see Jinder… you know, I didn’t know. Nobody knew. The way they did it, I’m very happy for Jinder, because he left and he came back and he busted his ass and he trained hard and he has probably the best physique here in WWE. He looks great, has a great attitude, and is a genuinely good human being, and I couldn’t be happier for him. Congratulations to Jinder Mahal.

“Anything can happen. You never say never in our company, and that proved the point last night. It was just a month ago or two months ago that he was in eight-man tags with us. He was in that comedy-style eight-man tag match that we’ve had for the last year, and now he’s world champion. That goes to say something. He’s worked his ass off and had the attitude that every performer needs to have when they try to get into this company… He is proof of something good happening.

“You know, the brass ring that everybody talks about, which everybody makes fun of, it was there [Sunday] night for Jinder Mahal, and he grabbed it.”

Discussion: Should Ronda Rousey Join The WWE?

Last night, Ronda Rousey made her long awaited return to the octagon. Her last bout was over a year ago and we was knocked out by Holly Holm. At UFC 207, Rousey returned and was immediately given a shot at the Women’s Bantamweight title. Rousey went up against the current champion Amanda Nunes and this fight was even more lopsided than her fight against Holm. Nunes retained her title and knocked out Rousey in 48 seconds. It has led to an onslaught of jokes on social media. Many pointing out the fact that it the Lesnar/Goldberg match was longer and that CM Punk lasted longer in his UFC debut.

There are those in the WWE that are praising Rousey for her past accomplishments and even inviting her to the WWE via Twitter.

https://twitter.com/Goldust/status/815074262570573825

Eric Bischoff doesn’t seem too fond of the idea of Ronda Rousey coming to the WWE, especially after the devastating loss to Nunes.

https://twitter.com/EBischoff/status/815082592248549376

https://twitter.com/EBischoff/status/815084893512220672

Rousey has made it known that she is a fan of the WWE. She also made an appearance at Wrestlemania 31 along with The Rock in a confrontation with Stephanie McMahon and Triple H. It took Rousey a lot of time to recover from her last loss. If Rousey does ever wind up joining the WWE, it probably will not be for awhile.

Discussion: Do you think that Rousey’s disappointing defeat to Amanda Nunes will prevent her from joining the WWE? Eric Bischoff also stated that the mystique surrounding Rousey is gone and she wound’t draw as much money now. Do you agree with that sentiment or do you believe that Ronda Rousey would still succeed in the WWE? Share your thoughts below.

Goldust Speaks On Unveiling The Dusty Rhodes Statue At WrestleMania AXXESS

Goldust is doing media today in Dallas, TX to promote Sunday’s WrestleMania 32. The former WWE Intercontinental Champion spoke to Sportsday about unveiling a bronze status honoring his father on Thursday night.

“My brother, Cody, and myself unveil a statue of my dad (the late Dusty Rhodes, former WWE Hall of Famer and NWA world champion). So that’s really cool,” Goldust said. “He passed last June and it’s been tough for us, but we’re persevering.”

The longtime WWE performer also discussed the difference between WrestleMania and a normal WWE event, saying this is like their Super Bowl.

“This is our Super Bowl. You take the Super Bowl and you have all the shows, the half time show, and the week-long events like the NFL Experience. WWE does the same thing. This is our show,” Goldust said of Sunday’s event. “This is our time to put on the biggest and best matches that we have and all the stuff that comes with it. That includes the backstage segments, the entertainment segments, the funny things, the songs and music. Everything is big. And this will be our biggest WrestleMania to date with 100,000-plus people. It’s going to be unreal.”

On if WWE acknowledges the negative feedback they get from former WWE Superstars such as Bret Hart, Mick Foley and Vince Russo:

“Would it bother you if you were in their shoes and actually read the endless stream of negativity directed their way? I don’t have any idea if they actually immerse themselves in this info.”

On whether or not Goldust should get a run as WWE Champion before he retires:

“I’m a Goldust fan and respect him and his work greatly but I’d not have any desire for him to be WWE Champion at this stage of his game.”

On whether or not people in WWE read his website and if he’d be willing to do a WWE Network “Table For 3” episode with Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler:

“Whether someone in WWE reads my work or listens to my podcasts isn’t a concern to me. However, I’d be happy to work on any WWE projects if they fit my schedule and I thought that I’d enjoy doing them. Me working on projects in WWE isn’t an issue with me but is strictly a WWE decision.”

On not being a fan of scripted promos in WWE:

“I am not a fan of long, scripted promos in today’s world of pro wrestling. They are predictable and come off as nothing more than time fillers moe often than not.

Goldust Comments On Spreading Dusty Rhodes’ Ashes, Extra Security At WWE Events

WCHSTV.com has an article about WWE adding extra security to live events due to recent ISIS threats. The extra security is still going on, as fans at the WWE live event in Huntington, West Virginia on Sunday were asked to arrive early and be prepared to go through multiple stages of security. The doors opened at 3:30pm for a 5pm show and every bag was checked, every person was checked with a metal detector wand and everyone wearing a heavy coat was searched. Another change is any fan with a large purse or backpack has to empty the contents into a clear bag and return their own bag to their car.

– Dustin “Goldust” Runnels posted the following on his official Facebook page:

“We spread pops ashes this past Friday in a place that he loved dearly. Welcome home dad. I love you!”
