Jake Roberts On Ric Flair Not Wanting His Help Battling Alcoholism

WWE Hall Of Famer Jake “The Snake” Roberts was recently interviewed by The Wrestling Estate to talk about several professional wrestling topics. Roberts was asked about working closely alongside Vince McMahon and Pat Patterson on the WWE creative team in the 90s:

“When I was there, we had like six people who we’d sit down and go over things. Bottom line is it all goes through Vince [McMahon], anyway. But you could talk to Vince. He would listen to a point. We got along well when I was booking with him, quite well. Pat was just a tremendous talent.

“The only problem I had with Pat was that he liked to go with comedy too much. I feel like if people wanted comedy, they’d watch a comedy show. This is wrestling, let’s see some wrestling. But to each his own. You can’t knock Vince too much because he’s still rolling.”

Roberts also shared his opinion on why he thinks there is too much comedy in professional wrestling today:

“I think so. It’s my own feeling. But they’re doing a three-hour show and I’m sure it’s very taxing trying to keep it going. I guess there is a need for some comedy, but again, I just think they put too much out there. I don’t think they pay enough attention to heat for heels.

“Of course, there are no heels and babyfaces anymore. Everybody does the same stuff. I don’t like that either. There should be a clear line as to good guy and bad guy. I think that’s what the people really want. Maybe I’m wrong, hell, I’ve been wrong before.”

It turns out that Roberts also actually reached out to fellow WWE Hall Of Famer Ric Flair on battling alcoholism. “The Nature Boy,” however, didn’t want Roberts’ help in the matter:

“I sent a message to him, and unfortunately, he didn’t want any help from me. I’ll just leave it at that.”

Jake Roberts Reveals His Current Status With WWE

WWE Hall Of Famer Jake “The Snake” Roberts was recently interviewed by CBC News to discuss several professional wrestling topics. Roberts was first asked about breaking new ground in wrestling and continuing to learn within the business. He admitted it’s scary breaking new ground in the industry but the key is to continue to try and get better:

“It’s kind of scary breaking new ground. It’s kinda scary trying things that haven’t been tried. You don’t know if you’re going to come out on the upside or the downside of it. They remember the bad nights, they don’t remember all the good ones. If you have a ‘stinkaroo’ of a match, man, people remember that, so you don’t want to have one of those, you know, and you go out there and give it your best nightly.

“The nights you come up short should drive you to be better. That’s the key — always try to get better. The day that you go to the ring and say you didn’t learn anything, then it’s time for you to take your tights off, put them in a pile, squirt them with some lighter fluid and then burn them, because if you quit learning, then you’re not trying.”

Roberts also revealed that some talents still contact him and ask him for advice. He’s asked to watch several talents’ matches and offer them pointers afterwards:

“These guys are very open to listening to what I have to say. Several of them come to me nightly and say ‘Hey, will you watch my match and give me some pointers?’ And that makes me feel really good, and I love helping them because I want the product to be the best that it can be. I want these guys to enjoy what they’re doing, so I try to teach them a little bit, you know, give them some of the knowledge that was given to me many years ago. That’s my duty, that’s my pleasure, that’s my dream.”

When asked about his current status with WWE Roberts said that he has no idea what the company is doing, but if they decide they’d like to get in contact with him they could always call:

“I have no idea what those guys are doing. If they decide they want me, they’ll call me.”

Jake Roberts Talks About Trying To Help Ric Flair With Sobriety

WWE Hall of Famer Jake “The Snake” Roberts spoke with Chris Yandek of CYInterview.com this week about living in Las Vegas and his new wrestling school, putting the finishing touches on his book and his efforts to help Ric Flair get sober.

You can listen to the full interview here (.MP3)

On his life today, Jake said:

“I still struggle with, you know, not really feeling good about myself at times and I certainly give myself a reason to, but you know, enough’s enough and you gotta move on and where I’m at these days, man I just want to reach out and help as many people as I can, because I know that each time I do that I’m closer to getting my dream come true and that’s just to continue to live sober, you know, and to enjoy life.”

After Ric Flair’s health scare in August, Jake says he reached out to the “Nature Boy” to help with his sobriety, but Flair was not interested in his or Diamond Dallas Page’s help:

“I even tried to help Mr. Flair and I hope Ric can do it. He’s sure going at it with the wrong attitude. He thinks he snapped his fingers, that he can just beat it. There’s a lot more to it. …

He’s in the hospital and he’s made that decision to quit drinking. My God I made that decision a million times and he thinks that’s all there is to it. There’s a lot more to it because you know why he’s in that hospital, that disease we call alcoholism is outside doing pushups getting ready for him to come out of the hospital. You’re in a guarded position in the hospital. You know, there’s not a lot of alcohol around.”

Jake Roberts On His Fear Of Snakes, Vader & Honky Tonk Man Injuring Him, Damien Biting Him

Jake “The Snake” Roberts recently took part in an Ask Me Anything question & answer session on Reddit. The WWE Hall of Famer fielded questions from fans and shared some intimate stories from his legendary wrestling career.

When a fan asked if Jake was ever afraid of his massive python Damien, the “Master of the DDT” revealed that he is actually terrified of snakes.

“Absolutely, I am terrified of snakes, always have been and always will be,” Jake answered. “It was just a great idea. I came up with it years ago, and I go to WWF and they finally let me do it. When the reality of doing it sunk in, I was terrified. […] I’ve been bit over 20 times, they can strangle you… it takes them just seconds to kill you… Ricky Steamboat had to pull one off of me, when I came thru the snake was in the audience and I grabbed him and got him under control.”

Roberts faced countless opponents during his active years, but when asked if there was one particular wrestler he dreaded working with, he answered “yes, absolutely.”

“Vader — He broke my sternum twice,” Roberts said. “Back to back. I wrestled him once, he broke it. I wrestled him again after I healed and he broke it again. I’ve had so many injuries over the years, and I don’t need something like that from someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing.”

His most painful wrestling-related memory is still the guitar shot he took from Honky Tonk Man on WWE Superstars in 1987. “The worst thing that happened was being hit by the guitar, that shattered two discs in my neck and damn near killed me,” he recalled.

Jake’s most-popular answer in the AMA post was to a fan asking what his proudest moment in wrestling was.

“There was a young boy in California with brain cancer and he’d just given up, and he had a horrible scar from surgery and he was real ashamed of it,” Roberts recalled. “It was ugly, man, it was damned ugly. I went in to see him and I was like, “Oh my God, I gotta get a haircut like that! It is badass!” It sparked him up a bit. Then they sent a TV crew in and newspaper people in, and he didn’t want that. He just wanted to hang with me. I saw his demeanor change and I told them that if he points at the door, you guys leave. Because it was for him and not for the newspaper, you know? He pointed, so I threw them out and he loved that.

“I was coming to town in three weeks and I told him I needed him in my corner. The doctor told him that wouldn’t happen. But we got him fighting, and we got him going again and he showed up for my match with the Honkey Tonk Man. I let him put the snake on him and to see that kids face… I don’t know, man, to see that… I could talk about 100 different matches but you asked for a moment, and that was a moment.

“I should try to find him now, because that’s the kind of stuff I do now. And those are the moments I treasure, because if I can bring happiness to someone, whoever… that’s why I love DDP Yoga, because it makes people feel better about themselves. And I know what’s that like because I’ve hated myself and the way I’ve looked and given up, so I’ve been down that road… so to go on this program with DDP and to watch people help themselves… I thought I was getting high before, but man! It’s an amazing feeling when you’ve helped someone get healthy.

“Dallas asked me once what DDP Yoga had done for me that nothing else could, and I said it gave me back the dream – when you’re down and out, you don’t dream. But as I got better, I started dreaming again.”

DDP On Ric Flair’s Generosity, Terry Funk Wrestling Again, Scott Hall & Jake Roberts

Diamond Dallas Page recently spoke to CBS Sports about DDP Yoga and a few wrestling topics. Below are some of the highlights:

Terry Funk wrestling again at 73 years old:

[Laughs] “I’m going to call Terry. You know, one of my biggest supporters is Gerry Briscoe. He’s 70-ish now. He’s a former world champion and wrestled since he was six years old and had a really beat-up body. The last time I saw him at WrestleMania, he looked like Tommy Lee Jones. He looked like a million bucks. He’s the biggest advocate, along with Mick Foley. And Chris Jericho, he’s 46 and bumping around like he’s 23. Now, as much I love Terry, no one bumped around anymore than he did, but he ain’t going to be bumping around like he’s 23. It’s just because he misses it so much. He could get away with it his whole life because he’s so believable. He’s one of the nicest guys on the planet and another Hall of Famer. If there’s a way to see it on the internet, and he’s going to get in there, I’m going to watch. I’m going to call him and tell him I’m going to send him my DVDs, because I know they can really help him.”

Scott Hall & Jake Roberts:

“Scott still has bumps along the road. Even though he did really well with his transformation, but he never really wanted to stop drinking. He did, and he still will, but he doesn’t want to. Jake does. Probably since the movie (The Resurrection of Jake the Snake), he’s fallen once or twice. Technically he’s been sober for five years and without a bump for two or three years. Jake realizes that he doesn’t want to be that guy and Scott occasionally forgets that.

I feel that it’s part of finding yourself. I’ve seen Scott at that point, and a lot of people have seen friends and family there. They’ve seen the person so close, and they’ve been sober for so long, and then they fall. Well, sometimes there are some little twitches or something that sets them off. Or, like I said, they don’t want to quit drinking. I could never have helped either one of them at the time if they didn’t want to. All I know is that it enabled them to both wind up where they belong which is in the Hall of Fame.”

Ric Flair’s generosity and an epic story:

“I made sure Ric knew how thankful I was to him [at the WWE Hall of Fame]. Even though Ric and I have had adversity with each other over the years and said some things we probably both wish we could take back. We’re in a really good spot today, and I think the world of him. I wanted him to know that him putting me over for that world title, I know it put me one step closer to that Hall of Fame podium, and I will never forget it.

Ric and I, we had such a good time when we were up there. I ran into him a couple times at the Hall of Fame. On the last night before we were going, he asks what time my wife and I are leaving. He asks what time our flight was and I said 7:30.

Now, we’re both at the bar, and it’s 12:30 and I’m getting ready to go crash. He said, “Woo! Who made that reservation?” I said it wasn’t me. He goes, “Forget that. I’ve got a Learjet. You’re coming with me. You and [your wife] Brenda.” I said, “Ric, I’ve got so many bags” and he said, “FedEx them home. You’re not taking that flight!”

So, Mr. Limousine Riding, Jet Flying us home in his Learjet. Then when he found out it was the day before my birthday, he took us both out to his favorite restaurant. We both live in the Atlanta area. He fed us and then sent us home in a limousine. It was the perfect punctuation to an unbelievable career and Hall of Fame weekend. It was amazing.”

WWE Hall of Famer Asks “Wrestling Gods” For a Match With Bray Wyatt

It appears Bray Wyatt has caught the eye of a former Hall-of-Famer, one who appears ready to come out of retirement to face him.

Bray Wyatt opened this Monday’s Raw with a promo on having lost the opportunity to face Brock Lesnar, and slay the beast. He would then lose to Roman Reigns in the 1st match of the night.

Can Jake “the Snake” ever Wrestle Again?

Jake has talked about coming back for years, but unfortunately, he is 62 years old, and WWE will likely never put him in an actual match again.

The most recent documentary on Jake followed him as he cleaned up his life and attended his Hall of Fame ceremony in 2014. It is said that Jake wanted to make an appearance in the Royal Rumble that year, as other legends have done in the past, but WWE was hesitant.

Jake Roberts: WWE Has “Really Watered Down” Bray Wyatt’s Character

Jake “The Snake” Roberts spoke with Sports Illustrated this week and gave his thoughts on the WWE Championship program headed into WrestleMania involving Bray Wyatt and Randy Orton. The WWE Hall of Famer is a longtime proponent of Bray Wyatt, is happy to see him as champion but thinks WWE has completely mishandled the booking of his character. Wyatt’s recent WWE Championship victory was met with “You deserve it!” chants, something Jake feels wouldn’t be happening if fans fully bought into the cult leader character.

“It’s great that Bray is champion, but my worry is that they’re pulling him away from his character,” said Roberts. “The people were chanting, ‘You deserve it!’ to him on Smackdown after he won the title. Is that a chant for a heel? Hell no, but that’s just the nature of the business these days. Bray needs to do something really nasty, and now is the time. He needs to be the one to do something crude and wrong.”

Wyatt ended John Cena’s 2-week championship reign and is set to face Randy Orton in just a matter of weeks. With this being the first world title for the Eater of Worlds, Roberts firmly believes he needs to have a long run with the title to establish his credibility as a main eventer.

“Hopefully they’ll let him keep his character and hold onto the belt for a while,” said Roberts. “If this is just WWE quickly using Bray to change the guard, then it’s a waste of time. They’ve really hurt his character in the last year. They’ve really watered it down.

“Randy Orton has a lot of going for him. He’s just missing that last little piece. I would love to spend time with him and see if I could help him. I’ve offered that before, and no one replied, so there you go. It hurts because I love the business and I want to give back to it. It’s a damn shame that I reached out and didn’t hear anything, it made me sick to my stomach.”

Roberts thinks the best storyline route is for Randy to turn full-on babyface and for Wyatt to reform the classic Wyatt family with Harper and Rowan.

Jake Roberts Says He’d Return To WWE If Asked: “Wrestling Needs Some Help Right Now”

WWE Hall of Famer Jake Roberts says he’d be open to returning to WWE television to help however he can.

In an interview with DC 101 FM to promote his new film The Bet, Roberts was asked if he would return to WWE if he got the call.

“I have so many things I want to do, so many things,” Roberts answered. “When I’m sober and clean and my mind’s working, I’m happy and energetic and I know I can fix this and do that. What do you choose? I don’t know. But, if the WWE did call me, yeah, I’d be right back in there man because I love wrestling and the Lord knows wrestling needs some help right now.”

Roberts also talked about his previous film, the documentary about his comeback The Resurrection Of Jake The Snake Roberts. Roberts says he struggled with doing the movie in the beginning, and referenced being “burned” by the producers of Beyond The Mat. He says doing it with DDP and being given control of the movie put him at ease.

“If I didn’t want it to come out, it wouldn’t come out,” Roberts said of his creative control. “Trust was a big part of it and once I saw the final product, I thought, ‘you know what, this is going to help so many people.'”

Roberts also talked about missing the late Dusty Rhodes and “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, saying they are both irreplaceable. He says there will never be anybody else like Piper or Rhodes again, and that it blows his mind that he’s still alive and they aren’t.

Jake Roberts Talks About The Recent Loss Of His Mother

WWE Hall of Famer Jake “The Snake” Roberts recently spoke with Niagara Frontier Publications about his life in wrestling, how his DDT finisher came about, sobriety and more. Sadly, Jake recently lost his mother.

“Well, right now I am down. I just buried my mother. … That is an empty spot. I really feel lost, like, ‘Wait a minute, I can’t pick up the phone and call her.’ It still feels weird. It is a hole that has to be filled. I am so grateful that I was able to get sober and clean before she left, because I know she worried about me constantly, and hated the fact that I was going through what I went through. But she was always there for me, man. If I reached out, she was always there, you know?

So, to have cleaned up, and gotten right, I know she was happy with me with that. And she was comfortable. But to go through this process, and not drink, is so huge for me. Because, normally, boy, I would’ve been on a binge and a half for something like this comes along. I’ve not had one moment that I wanted to go drink or go do drugs or anything. I’m really grateful that I came through this thing. … All I can do is just a day-by-day process and keep living the dream, man, and that’s sobriety.”

Our condolences to Jake Roberts and his family.

Jake Roberts Says WWE Is Holding Bray Wyatt Down, Speaks On Daniel Bryan & Concussions

WWE Hall of Famer Jake “The Snake” Roberts believes that Bray Wyatt is a “very unique” talent on the WWE roster. In a recent interview with Ring Rust Radio, Roberts was asked about who on the current WWE roster he thinks is excelling both in the ring and on the mic.

“Bray Wyatt; he definitely gets it done,” Roberts answered. “I think they’re holding him down. I think he could do a lot more, and I would like to see them turn him loose, but I don’t think they’re going to. He would be something hard for WWE to ram something down his chute because his character is so strong. So they keep him beaten down and I think it’s a shame because he is very unique.”

While he believes Wyatt is capable of more, he doesn’t believe he’s capable of being a top heel. Roberts compared Wyatt to his own old character facing Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage, saying it would be too hard for him to get booed by everyone.

“He will never be a top heel because people are infatuated by him. Just like the way they were with me,” Roberts said. “Whenever I wrestled Hogan they cheered me, with Savage it was split. People are funny man. When you’re doing your job really well, and you’re different and unique and you have this edge, that’s very special. People dig that, they respect that and they want to be with that. If they are scared of your character like they were of me and Bray, they want to be on the winning team, so they will want to cheer for you regardless.”

The WWE Hall of Famer also spoke on the recently retired Daniel Bryan, a talent he says WWE needs desperately. Roberts discussed his own experience with concussions, saying he believes they are to blame for spots on his brain that “don’t look good.”

“As far as Bryan goes, that’s a huge loss and I hate to hear that. WWE needs him desperately,” Roberts said. “I’m very proud of him that he is smart enough to get out after being injured. Most of us weren’t. As far as concussions for myself, I went and did all the tests because I am having issues. We did all the tests and stuff and it did not come out good. It come out there’s some spots on my brain that don’t look good and shouldn’t be there. It came down to how many concussions do I think I had, and I thought I had maybe two or three year. It’s a very low number when really I think it was more like eight or ten. So let’s say two or three, but I wrestled for 40 years, that’s 120 now. So I am going to have problems, and I’m already having problems.”

You can listen to the full interview here.

Jake Roberts Talks About Being Terrified Of Snakes, Working With Andre & More

Wrestling legend Jake “The Snake” Roberts joined the In The Room podcast this week and spoke with Brady Hicks and company about never winning a championship in WWE, wrestling everyone from Hulk Hogan to Andre the Giant to Randy Savage, DDP helping him turn his life around and more. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

Turning His Life Around:

“I’ve got the world by the tail. And life is so good for me. Even beyond the WWE years … I’ve got the movie going on, the movie is going strong. It’s helped some people, the comedy thing I’m doing, which is me sitting down, having a blast telling old road stories. Everybody loves it. That’s awesome, too because the fans mean so much more to me now that I’m sober and cleaned up.”

Working with Snakes:

“I was terrified of [snakes], man. It just goes to show me how far I’ll go if you pay me enough.”

The Late Andre the Giant:

“[Andre] woke me up to some exciting things. He held me down once and farted on me for about 30 seconds, which was incredible, I might add.”

While Roberts admitted that McMahon has done things that have hurt the business, but gave Vince credit for being “the hardest working motherf*cker” he knows.

“Brilliant, brilliant. The hardest working motherf*cker I know,” Jake Said. “Like him or not, it doesn’t matter, he’s the hardest working son of a b*tch I know. He’s done a lot for this business, he’s done a lot of things that hurt this business. But for somebody in his position, he’s done pretty f*cking good.”

Sgt. Slaughter On 2016 WWE Hall Of Fame, Jake Roberts Documentary & More

WWE Hall Of Famer Sgt. Slaughter recently spoke with SACurrent.com.

On who he would like to see inducted into the 2016 class of the WWE Hall Of Fame in April:

“I’m hoping the [Fabulous] Freebirds might get in. I know all the Von Erichs might be in already, I believe. There are so many great superstars that came out of Texas. It’s fun for me not to know. I want to be surprised. I want to be excited just like everybody else. It’s one of my favorite nights of the whole year to go to the Hall of Fame induction ceremony.”

On if he thinks the message about struggling with addiction in the new Jake Roberts documentary is an important one to tell:

“I think it’s important for Jake to tell his story. A lot of people didn’t know what happened to him and how it happened. He’s one of the better characters and performers we had. He kind of just fell off the map. I haven’t seen the documentary myself, but I’m looking forward to seeing it. I’ve run into him a couple of times and he is the same guy. He still rags on me because I [participated] in some of his first matches. He told me I made him do things he had never done before in the ring. He just smiles and grins about it.”

On if it’s a good time to be in WWE:

“It’s a good time to be in the WWE and a good time to say you’re a part of it as a legend and as someone in the Hall of Fame. People respect you for the road you paved to keep it going. I always get the chance to thank the talent of today for all their hard work because they continue what we set out to do. Now, here we are at Wrestlemania 32.”
