JBL Blogs About Returning To The Announcer’s Table At Night Of Champions

John Layfield (JBL) posted this blog on Facebook.com talking about his return to the announcer’s booth at WWE Night of Champions, his Seven Summits mountain climbing adventure and more:

“Had a blast filling in for Jerry Lawler last night at Night of Champions, really rusty-but was wonderful to be back.

“I’m off to Africa Friday to climb the highest peak, Kilimanjaro, to raise money for the kids program I started in Bermuda-working with great folks there to make a difference.

“I was asked Thursday (or Wed night, not sure) this week to do the PPV last night for Jerry. Was honored to do so. Jerry and I share a birthday with our mutual friend Dutch Mantell, always had a running joke about that with Dutch-never thought I would fill in for Jerry.

“I am trying to be the 349th person (at least by last records that I have seen) to climb all Seven Summits-the highest mountain on all seven continents. Thanks to WWE 100% of money raised goes to the kids.

“My goal is to plant a WWE flag on all the summits with Mt Everest being last in 2014. Don’t know if I will make it, but I plan on trying-just as I tell my kids I work with that they must do. I’m trying to lead by example.

“I weigh 245 pounds, lowest since I was 20 years old, been training hard and in best shape (at least cardio wise) I have ever been.

“Long story short, I didn’t plan on filling in for Jerry and I am sure he didn’t plan on having a heart attack. I wish him well as he is a good friend. And, that’s his spot-not mine. I was asked to fill in and I did.

“Long term, I don’t know what is the future other than my climbs and my kids program in Bermuda. www.SevenSummitsforKids.com is the place you can see what I am talking about-though it is not as updated as I would like.

“I love the WWE, I will always consider it home and if they need me to fill in or come back to do something, I have always been open to that. We both have never discussed it as they never had a need and since they didn’t have a need, I never reached out.

“I thought there were some fantastic performances last night, really enjoyed being there watching this crew put on a great PPV. I was VERY rusty, especially at times-but had a blast.

“Get well soon Jerry!”

Jerry Lawler Says JBL Will Be Taking His Place Tonight On Commentary

Jerry Lawler tweeted the following on Sunday afternoon, confirming an earlier report that JBL will be doing commentary tonight

“Sorry I can’t be at Night Of Champions tonight, but I understand JBL will be taking my place. I wish him the best of luck! I also want to thank the thousands of fans and friends for the outpouring of well wishes and concern for me. I love the WWE Universe!”

*Spoiler* Big Name Replacing Jerry Lawler On Commentary Tonight

Following Jerry Lawler’s medical emergency on Monday’s WWE RAW, he’ll obviously be off WWE television for the foreseeable future. There has been a lot of speculation this week as to who will replace Lawler on commentary.

Jim Ross is in Boston for tonight’s WWE Night of Champions pay-per-view, a sign he could be returning to the announcer’s booth.

As of Sunday morning, F4Wonline.com is reporting that former WWE Champion John Bradshaw Layfield had been contacted by WWE and they reached an agreement for him to work commentary for Night of Champions and tomorrow’s RAW.

Dave Meltzer says this could be more than a 2-shot deal for JBL, who is off to Africa later this month to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro as part of his Seven Summits mountain climbing adventure.

JBL Discusses WWE Run, Whether His JBL Character Was Rushed, Return To Commentating, Raw 1,000

Raj Giri of WrestlingINC.com recently interviewed former WWE Champion John “Bradshaw” Layfield. During the interview, Layfield discussed signing with WWE, his singles push as JBL, how Eddie Guerrero helped his career, a potential return to the announcer’s booth, appearing at RAW 1000, making amends with Tully Blanchard and more. Here are some highlights:

WrestlingINC: You started in WWE back in 1996. When you made your debut as Justin “Hawk” Bradshaw, how did you see your career going after your first year?

John Bradshaw Layfield: I didn’t think I’d be there very long. I really thought I’d be there two or three years. That’s about all people were around for at that time. People came and left a lot and I really figured I’d be there two or three years and I’d go back to Japan and maybe even going back to college and being a coach somewhere. I didn’t expect to be there for 15 years or whatever. That was completely unexpected to be there that long.

WrestlingINC: When WWE let Ron Simmons go [in 2004], did you know in advance that you were being groomed for the JBL gimmick?

Layfield: No. In fact, I don’t think anybody even expected it. The JBL character, I had had in mind for a long time, a character very similar. But they were very reticent to let me do that because I was doing a lot with the troops and they didn’t need me. Then, all of a sudden at once, I think Big Show was hurt, Brock Lesnar had left the company. All of a sudden, you needed somebody immediately in that role and that’s when they did the change. All of a sudden, just one day.

I don’t think it was something thought about with a lot of forethought. Vince McMahon always said that he thought I could be a world champion and he was probably the only one in the entire company that thought that. [Laughs.] I have no idea why he thought that. But, when they came up with the JBL character, I knew this was going to be my last shot at it, so I was hoping it would work. It didn’t work at all for the first few weeks and if it hadn’t been for Eddie Guerrero, it probably wouldn’t have worked. Thank goodness, I had the right opponent and a good friend of mine and it ended up working.

WrestlingINC: I know you said that WWE didn’t have a lot of options in terms of building you up a bit more and then putting you in the title feud. Do you think that would have helped initially or do you think it’s better that it played out the way it did?

Layfield: I don’t know, you know, it turned out as well as it could have for me. We had a long pay-per-view window at that time. If we just had three or four weeks, I don’t think it would have worked. But we had time, I think five or six weeks to try this. It finally started working and it finally started getting heat on the JBL character, mainly because of Eddie.

It ended up working and I think a lot of that had to do with the long lead-up time with pay-per-view.

WrestlingINC: For a short while [in 2006], you went to commentary. I remember at that time you said you were retired for good. Did you originally think you were retired and that you wouldn’t be returning, or did you know in the back of your mind that it would probably happen at some point?

Layfield: No, no. I didn’t know. It came up during the weekend. I had some physical problems with my back that caused me just some really bad problems. So, that’s when they came up with the idea out of the blue. I think it was in Phoenix, somewhere in Arizona. I wrestled Rey and quit. It happened within two days, it was just something in my back and it got really bad. I was having really bad nerve problems. I really thought I was done.

So, when I quit/retired, nobody expected me to come back. I was doing commentary and I was enjoying it but then my back started getting better. I didn’t quit because I wanted to, I quit because I had to. I didn’t have any lead up to it. It was just that one day I was a later, and the next day I wasn’t. So, I kind of wanted to finish on my own terms. That’s when I came back and my back slowly started getting worse again. That’s when I came up with the idea to retire at WrestleMania. I just thought it was fun to have Rey do it twice. [Laughs.] Plus, the association of Rey and Eddie, it was kind of my tribute to Eddie in the same vein.

WrestlingINC: You were joking on Twitter recently and teasing a return to Smackdown! as a commentator. Is that something you’d be interested in doing?

Layfield: I am interested. The job has not been offered to me and I was just having fun with Michael Cole on Twitter. I think I said I was coming back. You know, I was having fun with Michael. I don’t mean to mislead anyone, I’m not working, so to speak, on Twitter. [Laughs.] I was simply having fun. The job does appeal to me, yeah.

I never thought the job would come open. There’s only two jobs for color commentary in WWE and Jerry Lawler may be there for another 30 years and I hope he is. He’s a great commentator. Booker moving to the general manager role opens up that job. But, that doesn’t mean it’s not filled and I don’t know it. It could be filled and they may already have plans for it — I don’t know that. I haven’t been offered the job. They haven’t told me, ‘Hey we want you to come work,’ or anything. So, yeah, it does interest me and if they called, it certainly would be very tempting to do.

WrestlingINC: Did you get the bug to come back after your appearance on Raw 1000?

Layfield: Yeah, that was a lot of it. I really have enjoyed coming back and doing stuff and I’ve really enjoyed watching the shows recently. So, that’s a big part of it, you know. It’s been a part of my entire life, I’ve wanted to be a wrestler since I was a little kid. I don’t think that ever leaves you. Me, coming back for the Hall of Fame and then Raw 1,000 — that was a lot of fun.

I miss being around it, miss being around the guys, miss being around it all. If I never get a change to go back, I’m fine with that. But if I have the chance to do something, then it’d be very tempting. Especially if it’s something like Smackdown! where it’s on a Tuesday and I still get to spend the weekend with my family.

WrestlingINC: What was that night like, going back for Raw 1,000 with all the guys being there?

Layfield: Coming back was awesome, it was like I had never left as far as being in the locker room with a lot of these guys that I had wrestled with and all. You add the legends, guys that I really idolized like ‘Rowdy’ Roddy Piper and Harley Race was backstage. It was really cool to be back and I wanted to come back for the show. I passed up a deal in London where I was going to be part of a big Rugby thing to do it and I’m really glad I did it.

I wanted to come back as the APA. I wanted to come back with Ron. When they called me asked me to come back, I was really happy about it. Then, when they called me a week before, they asked me if I had any old APA shirts because they couldn’t find any at the time. I was really excited that they had decided I was going to come back as part of the APA.

WrestlingINC: You’ve been involved in a lot of projects since then. You dabbled in MMA commentary, you have The Layfield Report and now the Summit Climb.

Layfield: Well, I’ll try to keep it as short as possible. I started up this program here in Bermuda, working with what society deems under-privileged kids, at-risk kids. I had an idea to do the seven summits to raise money for the kids that I work for. WWE signed to partner with me on that which was just phenomenal. I wanted to do something to raise awareness. I’ve always been a news junkie. So, LayfieldReport.com is part of what I want to turn into. Where I can do things to promote sport for change-charities around the world that work with kids like I’m doing.

There’s a wonderful group out of London, Yawn Sport, that has about 1,000 charities that they highlight. I wanted to have a way to be able to do that. Also, have a way to be able to help fund the program. So, I’m trying to build up Layfield Report to support my program. If you have a website — I’ve got a website called BeyondRugbyBermuda.com but nobody goes to it. [Laughs.] There’s no reason to go to it. Layfield Report has all your news and everything. What I can do — I’m still building on that site — is I can put stuff about our program.

There’s a great program in New York called Play Rugby USA or a great program called Project Alcatraz down in Venezuela. I can do stuff to highlight that within the news, so it’s interesting to come on there. But, a lot of LayfieldReport.com — and it’s not finished yet — was built to help fund the program, hopefully, if I can monetize it. So, I’ll be able to raise awareness about the Seven Summits and the charities that work with kids around the world.

Layfield also discussed why he chose to wrestle Rey Mysterio for his final match, his heat with Tully Blanchard and apologizing to him, Ron Simmons’ thoughts on his JBL character, how Eddie and Chavo Guerrero helped his career, and much more. JBL Calls WWE’s Top 50 Villains List “Insane” – “Give Me A Break”

Former WWE superstar John Bradshaw Layfield has a new blog up about talking about WWE’s “Top 50 All-Time Wrestling Villains” list.

WWE Ranks The “Top 50 All-Time Wrestling Villains”

Here’s what JBL said:

“I have to say the top 50 greatest heel list by WWE is pretty far off. Forget JBL, I’m too biased to comment on myself, after all who else has had to have a police escort out of a town like I had in El Paso in 2004? That is real heat-and has any heel had any heat like that where folks were actually wanting to kill you since then, but I digress.

The biggest problem I have is with Gorgeous George being #9. I believe he was the greatest heel of all time, he inspired Muhammad Ali and James Brown-this was the guy who set the bar.

Nothing against my pal Hot Rod, I think Roddy was greatest heel of modern era. It is hard to compare eras, so how do you compare Hot Rod to the ‘Toast of the Coast’ The “Sensation of the Nation” the ‘Gorgeous One’. It’s impossible. So any list is arbitrary.

However, putting Gorgeous George #9 is insane. The 4 Horsemen were the greatest faction of all time, you have to have them at the top. There are so many great heels, omitting Bruiser Brody though? Really? Or Stan Hansen? Or William Regal?

Hollywood Hulk Hogan? Give me a break. Hogan was in the top 3 of biggest draws of all time, perhaps the biggest-depends on how you define the Stone Cold era. However, a heel? He wasnt a real heel he was a character. Greatest storyline of all time was the NWO and biggest match of all time was him versus Andre (that was ALL him, and he should get credit for that), but he was never a proper heel-he was still the Hulk, big difference.

Only two heels in the last 20 years needed police escorts out of towns, me and Sgt Slaughter. No one else.

Before that there were many. Hot Rod had heat like a nuclear bomb, he could be greatest heel ever-if the Gorgeous One isn’t and that is a close race.

In the 70s and 80s there were great heels and too many to mention here. Dick Murdoch, my first tag partner, was one of best heels of all time. To put some of these guys on the list and not Captain Redneck? Come on!

Any list is hard to justify, but I gotta say while this one has most of the top 50 in place I would argue the placing itself.”

JBL Reveals If He Is Interested In A WWE Return

Former WWE Champion John “Bradshaw” Layfield recently teased on his Twitter that he would be replacing Booker T on commentary on SmackDown. Layfield later admitted that he was kidding, but expressed interest in a return to commentary if the job were available. During a recent interview with Raj Giri of WrestlingINC.com, JBL discussed how interested he was in a return to the announce booth.

“I am interested,” Layfield admitted. “The job has not been offered to me and I was just having fun with Michael Cole on Twitter. I think I said I was coming back. You know, I was having fun with Michael. I don’t mean to mislead anyone, I’m not working, so to speak, on Twitter. [Laughs.] I was simply having fun. The job does appeal to me, yeah.

“I never thought the job would come open. So, yeah, it does interest me and if they called, it certainly would be very tempting to do.”

JBL Recalls A Funny Story About Almost Getting Into A Fight With Boxing Legend Evander Holyfield

Former WWE superstar John Layfield posted the following story on Facebook about boxing legend Evander Holyfield hearing JBL trash talk him at a WWE live event:

“One of best stories ever from commentary was at Madison Square Garden with Evander Holyfield.

I had met Evander before and he was a total jerk, complete jerk to both me and Ron.

He used the religious image while he was an absolute reprehensible creature. He’s had a ton of kids by a ton of women and professes to be a model Christian. I don’t mind people being what they are, but I abhor fakes. I
can’t stand Evander Holyfield.

Soooooo……. On to MSG.

Evander is to box Matt Hardy in a ‘boxing match’ as MVP’s replacement in a Madison Square Garden event.

I am doing commentary and the whole show I am putting over Evander as this great guy, blah blah blah.

By the end of the show I am sick of myself. So during commercial I tell Michael Cole a true story of Evander and my wife at Fox News.

My wife had called me and told me she was in the ‘Green Room’ with a famous boxer but not being a sports fan she didn’t know who he was., she told me it was Evander Holyfield.

I explained to her he was one of greatest boxers of all time and told her the whole story of his career which I knew by heart as a huge boxing fan. She told me that he was ‘very nice’. I said “of course, he has had 9 kids by 9 women of course he is nice, leave now!” and of course I was joking, but half serious.

During the break I tell Michael this story, but of course I go further-I totally tear down Evander as a hypocrite and piece of garbage that I think he is. I have no idea this is being broadcast into his dressing room, I still had my headphones and mic on. Every word I say Evander hears.

Matt Hardy and MVP were in the room, ask them how tense it got. A spokesperson for Evander went to Vince and threatened to have him leave the show.

More importantly, how would you like to be Matt Hardy? He is facing the former heavyweight champion in what he hopes is a work and he now knows this guy is furious. While I was saying this Evander had one of his kids on his lap listening, and from Matt’s story he just got very quite.

Evander ended up doing business which I am sure Matt was thankful.

My headset was ringing to tell me to shut up.

After the show I went to Evander’s dressing room, not to apologize for what I said-I meant it and still do, but it was totally inappropriate for me to treat a guest of our show like that, I shouldn’t have let my personal feelings potentially screw up a show.
At his dressing room I encountered a security guard. I was expecting anything from a fight to him excepting my apology-I had no idea, but I had made my bed and I would lie in it.

I never apologized for what I said but for the venue I said it in as he was our guest. I meant what I said, but shouldn’t have said it to a guest of the WWE. The security guard looked at Evander who was less than five feet away and Evander shook his head, so I never spoke to him direct though that was my intention and he heard every word I said. And, I never apologized for calling him what I did, I apologized for doing it on a WWE show.

As I walked by the boys to Evander’s dressing room, no one knew what would happen. Ron Simmons told me, “leg dive him!’ which was my plan, it was a tense moment.

I have seen him since, I have no respect for him, but I do hate he is getting ‘punch drunk’ as no one deserves that. He is a great boxer but a rotten human being.

The next day I apologized to Vince, I was wrong to attack a guest like that. Vince said, “we almost lost him” and I responded, “we almost lost Matt” and we both laughed.

The day I almost got into a shoot fight with the former world heavyweight champ.”

JBL Talks About Wrestlers “Borrowing” Moves & Gimmicks, Returning To WWE

Former WWE wrestler John Bradshaw Layfield has updated his Facebook blog and talked about wrestlers using each others moves and gimmicks.

Pictures of JBL’s Most Recent Mountain Climbing Adventure

JBL notes that the fallaway slam he used in his matches was originally borrowed from a wrestler in Japan. JBL said he wanted to use the move in his matches for a while, but waited until after Scott Hall left WWE before using it, because it was one of Hall’s signatures moves.

Now, he gets a lot of feedback from fans talking about Del Rio stealing his gimmick – and reveals what he thinks about that. He also teases (once again) about returning to the SmackDown announcing team:

“I see it used now by others, cool. I didn’t own it and I didn’t create it, very little was created in this business so theft is common-but it isn’t really theft if the guy is gone, which I am and Scott was when I started using it.

I remember the pump handle slam I did, I got it from Scott Steiner, and Road Dogg asked if he could use it for a finish, which of course I agreed. That’s how things work.

So when Alberto Del Rio steals my gimmick, got no problem with it-I stole it from Ted Dibiase and JR Ewing. Even George Wagner stole things and maybe his whole gimmick-look that one up on ‘Gorgeous George’ and Danny McShane (sp?).

Great business, glad to be a part.

Smackdown commentator job? I got mountains to climb first for my kids I work with, but ‘never say never’.”

Video: Eve On “Stars Earn Stripes” & JBL Blogs Seven Summits

After his most recent climb was cut short due to bad weather, JBL says he’s working on getting into the best physical shape as he possibly can:

“I can’t control the weather, I can only control me being ready to climb. I weighed 245 pounds this morning and my goal is to get below 220 pounds for Aconcagua to help which would put me the lowest I have been since being a teenager.”

“As an example I regularly wrestled at over 300 pounds during my career at WWE with my peak around 330 pounds. My end goal for Mt Everest in spring of 2014 is to get down to around 200 pounds.”

JBL Talks About Eddie Guerrero Helping Him Get Over

Arda Ocal of The Score television network is back with another exclusive interview with a former WWE superstar, John “Bradshaw” Layfield. Here are some highlights of what JBL said about:

Eddie Guerrero Helping Him Get Over In WWE:

“Eddie and I were really good friends. Eddie wanted the JBL character to succeed very badly. When I first started, I had been a mid-card to an upper-mid card guy my whole career. I filled in a few main events, but I was not a main event guy. People just weren’t buying the JBL character, it was forced down on them. It was one day I was Bradshaw and the next day I was JBL, with a cowboy hat in a world title match- people just didn’t buy it. Eddie really took that personal and he took it upon himself to get me over… His brother [Chavo] was a huge instrumental piece of what we did during that time. That’s when we came up with the heart attack angle with his mother and that’s when we came up with the immigration, back and forth over the border. A lot of that was Eddie, Chavo and I sitting around in the dressing room talking. If it hadn’t been for Eddie I don’t think the JBL character would have ever worked.”

An Update On His Seven Summits Adventure:

“I got Kilimanjaro next which is the easiest of the seven summits. It’s very high, 19,000 feet, but it’s the easiest of the seven summits…. Some of these mountains, Aconcagua and Vincent, when you’re climbing, you got to be climbing the whole time. At Russia, we had a little bit of down time, that’s why I chose it, so I could learn mountain skills. I didn’t even know how to put cramps on when I got there. I learned a lot.”

JBL also reveals how he pitched the idea of “Tribute to the Troops” to Vince McMahon and Kevin Dunn. Here is the complete interview:
