Jerry Lawler Interview: Being Straight Edge & Never Getting Injured

TheScore’s Arda Ocal (@arda_ocal) recently sat down with WWE Hall of Famer Jerry “The King” Lawler. During the interview, Lawler talks about never having a sip of alcohol, never smoking or doing drugs and did he ever feel pressure to do so being in an entertainment business, wrestling vs. announcing and much more. Here are some highlights of what “The King” said about:

How his illustrations gave him his break in pro wrestling:

“I sent the pictures into the TV station that aired the wrestling shows and lo and behold they showed my pictures on TV that week and they called me up for a job – you know how in a courtroom you see an artist drawing people on the stand, well I became a ringside artist for the wrestlers in the ring”

Never having a major injury, especially to his knees, despite never wearing kneepads and performing a second rope fist drop which lands him on his knees almost every match:

“I’m so fortunate do have had a great career doing something that I loved so much I would have payed promoters in the beginning to let me wrestle. Never having an injury is pure luck. We see so many young guys come in and within 6 months of their career they get some sort of career threatening injury, it can happen anytime and I’ve been fortunate to avoid those.”

JR Blog: Brock Lesnar, Michael Cole’s Commentary, Tag Teams

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross is back with another blog update, which you can read in its entirety over at JRsBarBQcom. Here are some highlights of what JR wrote about:

Michael Cole’s Commentary: “I’ve been impressed with Michael Cole’s more balanced commentary recently. He’s the new voice of WWE w/o question. Our handshake at WM28 ended any personal issues that I may have had with him. End of story.”

WWE’s Tag Team Division: “I see WWE tag team wrestling taking positive steps forward in 2012. Go ahead, roll your eyes at will. The lack of overall talent depth, no territories, etc affects all areas of the genre whether some fans want to admit it or not.”

His Favorite Broadcast Partner: “Besides the King, my favorite broadcast partner, when looking at antagonists, is @HeymanHustle. He knew what buttons to push to get me to raise my game. I never played the role of an announcer and was always just myself, for better or for worse. Being real. Bobby Heenan was an amazing partner too but ‘The Brain’ was more funny than a villain. I’ve said it before, Bobby Heenan may well be the most talented, all around performer in the history of the wrestling business.”

Brock Lesnar: “Lesnar and WWE may be a marriage made in Hell but it’s a relationship that I, as a fan, want to follow. When we signed Brock back in the day we knew tht he was going to be a handful and he was. However, athletic freaks like him don’t grow on trees and, like many coaches, etc, we put in the time necessary to keep Brock headed in the right direction as best that we could. He’s stubborn, anti social, uber talented, and volatile. Time will tell where Lesnar’s latest foray into WWE life takes him but as for me, I’m staying tuned.”

Fear Over WWE Releases, Video Of Lawler’s NBA Piledriver

There is a lot of mid-card talent in WWE that are concerned about their jobs. WWE typically does “spring cleaning” and releases several wrestlers this time of year. Especially with huge money being paid to Brock Lesnar and new talent getting called up to NXT and the main roster in the coming weeks, cuts are expected soon.

WWE Superstar Mason Ryan will be appearing at tonight’s FCW event from Eustis, Florida. He’ll be doing a meet and greet before the show and will be wrestling.

As previously reported, WWE Hall of Famer Jerry “The King” Lawler made a surprise appearance at Wednesday night’s Memphis Grizzlies home playoff game against the Los Angeles Clippers.

Lawler appeared during an intermission (wearing a Grizzlies jersey) and cut a promo in front of the crowd wound up giving a “fan” (wearing a Clippers jersey) a piledriver on the court.

Jericho-Punk Feud Hits Awards Show, WWE Takes Albert Signs

— CM Punk wasn’t on hand to accept the “Most Metal Athlete” Award during the 2012 “Revolver” Golden Gods Awards ceremony Wednesday night in Los Angeles, California so the show’s host, Chris Jericho, accepted the award on the WWE Champion’s behalf.

“I want to accept this for him, and even though he beat me at WrestleMania, and basically embarrassed me, I will give this to him in good standing,” Jericho said before smashing Punk’s award over his knee and tossing it off the stage.

Video and photos from the incident are available here.

While Cole referred to Lord Tensai as a returning WWE Superstar in his Raw SuperShow debut last week, there has not been any specific references made to any of his former personas on television. However, WWE.com has acknowledged that he previously competed as Albert and A-Train before “embarking on a journey of self-discovery in Japan.”

— Former WWE talent Luke Williams (a/k/a “Bushwhacker” Luke) recalls giving WWE’s Executive Vice President of Talent Relations John Laurinaitis his start in the professional wrestling industry during an interview with SportsTownChicago.com.

“We broke him in the business,” Williams said of Laurinaitis, who broke into the National Wrestling Alliance in 1986 as a flagbearer for The Sheepherders. “We were in NWA and he came in and Dusty [Rhodes] put him with us. Dusty was the booker at the time and he put him with us to learn the business. When he first started, he carried our flag and after a year or so, we went into the six-man’s and all that. Chris Masters Addresses Triple H’s Infamous Weight Loss Jab

In May 2006, Chris Masters’ booming career with WWE at the time would come to a screeching halt when he was sent to a drug rehabilitation center due to his addiction with painkillers. Speaking to Power Slam, the former WWE Superstar addresses the matter.

“It was a developing thing that kind of escalated in 2006 and became a problem. You know, I had to go away for a couple months to rehab after the company became aware of my problem. It took a while to get over that. I went into rehab, not even ready to deal with the mindset that I was an addict,” he says.

“It was so much responsibility and I don’t think I was mature enough to handle all that opportunity that was given to me. I didn’t really appreciate it, I made a lot of mistakes and it kind of derailed my career. It took a while for me to get myself back on track, but I did, and now I’m completely fine, clean and sober. But I’m a walking miracle. At one point, I was taking 75 painkillers a day.”

Masters lost a noticeable amount of muscle mass by the time he returned to WWE programming on the August 28, 2006 episode of Raw with color commentator Jerry Lawler acknowledging him as the “leaner and meaner Chris Masters.” Masters appeared in a backstage segment on the October 2, 2006 Raw with Triple H, Shawn Michaels and Eric Bischoff in which he said he was “thinking about writing a book on nutrition.” Triple H quipped in response, “Really? What are you going to call it: How To Lose Fifty Pounds In Four Weeks?” Interviewer Greg Lambert feels the remark was deliberately intended to ridicule his loss of muscle, which conflicted with what WWE was purportedly trying to achieve with its Wellness policy.

Masters responds, “First of all, let me say that Triple H is a big ball-buster. I don’t think he’s as devious as people make him out to be, but he’s a ball-buster, albeit an equal opportunity ball-buster: he takes shots at Shawn Michaels all the time. They were always taking jabs at each other. So, it might have been the wrong message, yes, at the time. But I don’t think it was meant as a malicious thing.”

A few weeks later, John “Bradshaw” Layfield made a similar crack at Masters’ expense in reference to MVP’s No Mercy opponent Marty Garner. He said, “The guy looked like he had escaped from a concentration camp: the guy was as skinny as Chris Masters.”

Masters responds, “I won’t take anything JBL says too seriously, because the guy’s an idiot [laughs]. Look at his body! Who is he to criticize anybody? But I didn’t realize it was such as a big deal. People wanted to point the finger and say [the weight loss] was because I was on steroids … But that wasn’t my problem. I didn’t go away because of that or come back leaner because of that: it was because I would wake up every morning in rehab and run two miles as my therapy. I wasn’t able to do as much weight training. So, I did gradually lose a lot of weight. I didn’t realize, coming back, it would be so dramatic and people would make such a big deal about it.”

Masters packed the muscle back as months later his physique had noticeably enlarged. Lambert asks, “Was that because you been stung by [the comments]?”

“Part of it was. Eventually, it wore on me, but not at first,” Masters says. “I was happy with myself: I didn’t mind being smaller. But after a certain point, it probably go to me, so I cut back on the aerobics and running, and went back on the heavy weights.”

Masters was suspended by WWE in August 2007 and November 2007 as a result of violations of their drug testing policy. This led to his first release from he company on November 8, 2007. He says of the events, “I hadn’t overcome my prescription pain pill problem. I had taken something that hadn’t been prescribed to me, and I got red-flagged for that.”

Masters eventually conquered his drug addiction and was rehired by WWE in June 2009. He explains what led him to change his ways.

“I’d got fired from the job I always wanted. I’d blown through six figures worth of money, and I knew I had to change my ways. We’ve seen a lot unfortunate tragedies in the business. I’ve seen Test and Umaga, who I knew well, pass away and it always affects me. There’s always a sense of relief that I was able to catch myself and not let it get to that point. It gets to a point where you either hit rock bottom or you’re going to die,” Masters says.

“I hit rock bottom, then a second rock bottom, and, by the third, it finally woke me up. The same thing has happened to Matt Hardy. But I hear now, it looks like he’s doing great. Hopefully, he’s reached enough rock bottoms that now, he’s back on track.”

Jab Taken At TNA Employee During ‘Mania, Nash’s Top Three

Nash also refuted Michael Cole’s claim that Sheamus’ defeat of Daniel Bryan was the quickest world title change in WWE history at 18 seconds. “Hey Cole Diesel-Backland 8 seconds,” he said in reference to defeating Bob Backlund for the WWF Championship in 8 seconds in November 1994.

Details On The Miz’s Backstage Heat, Warrior Appearing In NY

— The Miz has as much heat as anyone in WWE, but it has little to do with him not catching R-Truth during the Six-Pack Challenge on last week’s Raw SuperShow. Rather, the animosity is being attributed to his obnoxious behavior as many of his co-workers are turned off by it.

“The feeling is he’s like a little frat boy who is loud and has to be the center of attention,” the Wrestling Observer says.

As reported last week, it is widely believed within WWE that his work has regressed, both in the squared circle and verbally. When he was low on the totem pole, he appeared motivated and forced management to make him a headliner. He is now back to mid-card status and isn’t giving WWE much reason to elevate him again.

— Ultimate Warrior has been announced to appear for Northeast Wrestling on March 23, 2012 at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsie, New York. He will sign autographs, cut a promo and it’s being teased that he will do something physical.

Update On Cody Rhodes vs. Goldust, WWE Title Praised By GQ

— Cody Rhodes’ inclusion in the SmackDown Elimination Chamber Match at Elimination Chamber squashes the proposed bout against Goldust at the pay-per-view event. GQ has named the WWE Championship one of the best sports trophies of all-time.

They wrote of the title: “When it comes to gaudy title belts, boxing has nothing on professional wrestling. Boxing’s look like something stolen from the uniform closet of a Third World dictator. WWE’s is modeled after the old-school solid-fake-gold title belt that Ric Flair used to rock. Wooo!!!”

Muppets-RAW News, Linda Targeting Women, JR-King & More

Hornswoggle's new Muppets Tattoo (click to enlarge)

– With Disney’s The Muppets set to guest star on the October 31st Halloween edition of WWE RAW, the creative team has been working on the script for that show this week.

As if WWE’s resident muppet Hornswoggle wasn’t already going to be featured on the show, his new Muppets tattoo virtually makes him a lock for the Halloween RAW.

– The Associated Press is reporting that Linda McMahon is looking to better engage women in her 2012 Senate bid. Exit polling data in 2010 showed that 42% of female voters were less likely to vote for McMahon because of her association with WWE because of WWE’s portrayal of women and violence.

As with her last campaign, Linda is also looking to distance herself from WWE.

– The recent Sin Cara vs. Sin Cara match at WWE’s Hell in a Cell pay-per-view got overwhelmingly negative feedback by fans here on SEScoops.com – and WWE officials were also unhappy with the match, namely, how WWE’s agents/producers booked the match. While most would assume that two luchador wrestlers would stick to the style they know best (lucha!), many were expecting more of a grudge match-style fight, due to the nature of the HIAC event.

– WWE officials were disappointed at how the crowd reacted towards some of the bigger stars participating in the walkout angle, and the fact that two of the people the crowd reacted to the most were Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler. You know it’s a bad sign when your announcers are more over than most of the wrestlers on your roster.

– Felipe Barerra, a Texas high school football coach, received a one-week suspension after being caught doing a DX crotch chop to the opposing team as his team was celebrating their win this week.
