Jesse Ventura Talks About The Late Verne Gagne, Creation Of “The Body” Nickname

WWE Hall Of Famer Jesse “The Body” Ventura recently appeared on The Two Man Power Trip Of Wrestling podcast to talk about the late AWA promoter Verne Gagne. Below are some highlights:

On Verne Gagne’s creation of “The Body” nickname: “You have to remember both Hulk (Hogan) and I wrestled in other places before we came to the AWA. I had been wrestling five years, I wrestled in Portland, Oregon for three years, Hawaii and so let’s put it this way. It was during my tenure with Verne that I became Jesse “the Body” Ventura. In fact, Verne named me that. He had lost Superstar Billy Graham a couple of years earlier and he asked me; “Can you do Superstar Graham?” I told him I could do Superstar Graham better then Graham, because Billy was my hero. There would not have been a Hulk Hogan or a Jesse Ventura if there was no Superstar Billy Graham. Verne said to me that’s what we want and it was Verne that actually thought of it, he said I want to call you Jesse “The Body” and I want you to pose and do all that stuff that Graham does and that’s where the birth of Jesse “The Body” came from.”

On working for Verne Gagne in the AWA: “Verne had a great territory. The thing that made Verne’s territory so good was that you only wrestled about 12 or 14 times a month at the most. It gave you ample time with your family and ample time to work out and recover from injuries. I remember in Oregon I wrestled 63 consecutive nights in a row without a day off and there are guys who wrestled way more than that and beat that record like it was nothing. When you wrestled for Verne you would wrestle a day or two and then get three or four days off so it really made the Minneapolis territory at that time a wonderful place to be, if you wanted to make good money and not be on the road every day of your life.”

On Verne being a perfectionist: “We would be doing interviews and Greg (Gagne) would be running the interviews and we would bang through every market and have it down to like two or three markets and then Verne would come in and you would be there for six hours doing the final two markets. I would get so angry about that. At the time I lived along the Mississippi River and I would be so ticked off that I would park my car on the river bank before I would go into see my wife and kids. I look back on it now at age 63 and laugh about it but at the time it was happening Verne could literally (laughs) drive you crazy.”

On teaming with Adrian Adonis as part of the East-West Connection in the AWA and WWF: “Adrian was phenomenal in the ring and I couldn’t have asked for a better and more athletic partner, he was a great wrestler and could do anything you could imagine. My only problem with Adrian was after being with him for three or four years, was outside the ring Adrian sometimes required a babysitter and I got tired of that role. I didn’t feel as a professional it was my job to make sure Adrian made the planes on time and the events on time. So he became a little dependent on me and I really didn’t like that aspect of being with him and that was one of the reasons I finally broke the tag team up. Taking care of myself is a load enough, I don’t need to be taking care of a second person and don’t get me wrong that was all stuff outside of the ring, Adrian was never a problem in the ring at all..ever.”

On his favorite match teaming with Adrian: “When we beat the High Flyers at the St. Paul Civic Center and I always loved that I got the pin on Greg Gagne, so it will go down in history that Jesse Ventura gave Greg Gagne the spike pile-driver with a little help from Adrian and covered him 1-2-3. That’s on the famous AWA tape that Vince has out there now, I know because I actually watched it this past winter.”

  • Jesse Ventura Awarded $1.8 Million In Defamation Lawsuit

A jury awarded WWE Hall of Famer and former Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura $1.8 million on Tuesday in his lawsuit against the estate of “American Sniper” author Chris Kyle.

Ventura sued Kyle, who was tragically killed last year, for a story he wrote in his best-selling book, claiming he punched out Ventura in a California bar back in 2006. Ventura had allegedly made and speaking out against the United States military and saying the Navy SEALs “deserve to lose a few.”

Ventura testified that Kyle fabricated the story about punching him out. In testimony taped before his death, Kyle once again claimed the story was factual.

After several days of deliberations, attorneys for both sides agreed that the verdict did not need to be unanimous and would allow a verdict if only eight of 10 jurors agreed. After siding with Ventura, the jury was told to award damages to Ventura for any harm to his reputation, humiliation and embarrassment.

Jurors found that Ventura suffered an economic loss as a direct result of Kyle’s statements.

A feature film based on “American Sniper” is currently being developed, with actor Bradley Cooper playing the starring role.

  • Video: Jesse Ventura “Off The Grid” Hiding From Drones In Mexico

Jesse Ventura appeared on CNBC’s “Closing Bell” on Tuesday from an undisclosed location in Mexico. Ventura, who hosts a show called “Off The Grid” on Ora TV, says he’s living off the grid “so drones can’t find me and you won’t know exactly where I am.”

Ventura spoke about the alarming widespread surveillance of United States citizens and the failures of the Republican and Democratic parties.

“I now view the United States from the outside, and I don’t like what I see,” Ventura said. “You know what the favorite T-shirt was off the grid down here a couple years ago? A picture of [former President] George Bush, and it said weapon of mass destruction. Is that the way we want the United States portrayed throughout the world? I don’t think so.”

He also said talked about the role of money in politics and said his own campaign raised less than he made as Governor. His TV show is not about making money – it’s about educating the public.

“I don’t need the money. I’ve made the money,” Ventura said. “I don’t need no more money; I can live right now and my family until I die.”

Jesse Ventura Doesn’t Care For Eric Bischoff, Talks McMahon/Hogan, WWE & More

The following are highlights from a recent VOC Nation interview with former WWE Superstar and Governor of Minnesota Jesse Ventura:

On what it would take for him to run for President of the United States: “Two things would need to be met; I don’t run to lose, I run to win. I would have to have ballot access in all 50 states, and I would need a guarantee that I would be allowed in the debates. If you’re not allowed in the debates you have no chance of winning. You wrestling people could do that for me; just go out and get Jesse Ventura ballot access in all 50 states. All it takes is leg work to sign petitions. Every state is different; you’re going for a Federal office – shouldn’t it be the same in every state? That’s so Independent’s like me have trouble getting on the ballot. (Right now the chances of a Presidential run) are 50/50.”

On Barack Obama: “Barack Obama does not bring any change. People don’t understand that change isn’t going to happen by switching from Republican to Democrat. The only time you will really get change is to stay away from Democrats or Republican.”

On whether or not pro wrestling hurts his credibility: “If we truly want to go back far enough, Abe Lincoln was a wrestler. I don’t see where I’ve broken any new ground. Wrestling is a business; I was pretty good at it and I made a great living at it. Where did it ever say that you need to go to law school to serve? When I wrestled, I paid a lot of taxes.”

On critics of his WWE appearances while serving as Minnesota Governor: “I gave all of the money that I made to a scholarship fund. (the media) knew it. I used the money to create the Roosevelt High School Scholarship fund, and I’m proud of that.”

On his exit from WWE in 1990: “It was over a video game. Vince signed a contract with (Nintendo) and told me that I couldn’t sign an endorsement deal with another company (Sega). I told Vince that he didn’t own me; I wasn’t working under a contract at that time.”

On his relationship with Vince McMahon: “It was good until Linda McMahon ran for office. I said in the media that I wouldn’t endorse her because she ran on the Republican ticket, and I heard that Vince got mad at me because I said that publicly. I don’t endorse any Republican or any Democrat. If I he gave me as much money as he gave her to run for her elections, I would be the President. Why would you spend your own money to get a job in public service?”

On his relationship with Hulk Hogan: “I haven’t spoke to him or seen him at all since I left the WWE in 1990.”

On his relationship with Eric Bischoff: “Last time I saw him was when I was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2004 and I don’t care for him.”

On wrestling vs. commentary: “Commentating hurt a lot less, and by the time I started to commentate, I was making as much more more than I made wrestling. The business had switched to (being based around) television. Why would I go in there and beat myself up when I can make just as much money commentating? People can say what they want about pro wrestling, but at one point in my career I actually wrestled 63 days in a row. It hurts. Wrestling is ballet with violence. Nobody looks at a great Russian ballet dancer and questions their athleticism do they?”

The former Navy SEAL, pro wrestler, actor and governor will be on Howard Stern’s satellite radio show this morning to promote the book.

    Here’s the official synopsis:

“Read all the evidence from the biggest conspiracy in American history!

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past fifty years, you’re aware of the many hypotheses that the assassination of President John F. Kennedy was not done by one man. Whether you’ve read one or a dozen of the books on this topic, there’s no way to fully grasp the depth of this conspiracy.

For the first time ever, New York Times bestselling authors Jesse Ventura and Dick Russell have teamed up with some of the most respected and influential assassination researchers to put together the ultimate compendium that covers every angle—from the plot to the murder—of JFK. They Killed Our President will not only discuss the most famous of theories, but will also bring to light new and recently discovered information, which together shows that the United States government not only was behind this egregious plot, but took every step to make sure that the truth would not come out.

With 2013 marking the fiftieth anniversary of JFK’s assassination, this is the perfect time for They Killed Our President to be available to readers. The research and information in this book are unprecedented, and there’s nobody better to bring this to everyone’s attention than the former governor of Minnesota and US Navy SEAL, Jesse Ventura.”

Jesse Ventura Talks About Running For President In 2016, Linda McMahon’s Costly Senate Runs

JESSE VENTURA SPEAKS OUT ON LINDA MCMAHON’S COSTLY SENATE RUN, WHAT WRESTLING PERSONALITY WOULD HAVE MADE THE BEST POLITICIAN, WHETHER HE’LL RUN FOR PRESIDENT IN 2016, AND MORE

    By WeWantInsanity.com

He’s the most talked about guest in ClubWWI.com history. Now, Jesse “The Body” Ventura returns to the Club for his third (and most explosive) interview yet. Jesse speaks to James Guttman for 35 minutes (100 total in all three interviews) about everything including how Vince McMahon Jr. would fair in politics, why President Obama hasn’t closed Gitmo, his own experience with IRS audits, death threats for joining WWF in the 1980s, getting wrestlers over on commentary, and tons more.

The full audio is available at ClubWWI.com. Catch a free clip and read the full list of topics at WeWantInsanity.com.

You can also pick up Jesse’s paperback copy of “DemoCRIPS and ReBLOODlicans: No More Gangs in Government” at Amazon.com.

Jesse Ventura’s last appearance on ClubWWI.com was back in 2010 and before WWE’s Linda McMahon ran (and lost) twice for the U.S. Senate. Linda’s campaign famously spent just short of 100 million dollars in her bid. James Guttman asks Jesse about this. Did Linda’s tie-in with wrestling hurt her chances? Ventura’s not sure, but he knows a better way that money could have been spent.

“I don’t know, but I’ll tell you this. If Vince would have given me that kind of money, I’d be the President. How’s that for a quote?”

James laughs and says, “That’s going right in the headline now.”

    Ventura, through laughter, continues:

“When I ran for governor, I only raised $300,000. And that’s a statewide race, like the senate. I only raised $300,000. I made more money doing the job. The job of governor paid $120,000 a year. So I made $480,000 for the four years and I only spent $300,000 to get the job. If I would have had that money, I’d be the President. You give me that much money to spend on an election and I’ll be President. (laughs) I think that answers your question in a very humorous, funny Jesse “The Body” Ventura type of way.”

Jesse is well known for avoiding special interest groups and money from lobbyists. His new paperback book, “”DemoCRIPS and ReBLOODlicans: No More Gangs in Government”, covers how the same lobbyists appear at both conventions. Ventura has stood up to this new status-quo for years and it’s brought him heat from all angles. However, it’s no different than his wrestling run. In wrestling, like politics, true “straight shooters” are hard to find. JG asks Jesse who, out of all the people he’s met in the wrestling industry, would have made the best politician. Jesse barely needs a moment to think as he reveals his answer to ClubWWI listeners:

“Without a doubt, the best and smoothest would be Vince McMahon Sr., not Junior. Vince McMahon Sr. was the coolest, smoothest operator out of all the promoters I ever met – out of anybody in that whole business. You could be madder than a hornet and you’d go in and meet with him, you’d walk out feeling great but accomplish nothing. You’d feel good about yourself. Yet, he didn’t give you a thing. I won’t go into any specifics more than that. I think that describes Vince McMahon Sr. and I think it describes him in a very positive way. That’s how good he was.”

Although all of Jesse’s appearances on ClubWWI.com have been momentous, this one might be the biggest. Recently, it was implied that Ventura might run for President in 2016. James Guttman likes that idea and presented the question to him like this:

“This country loves firsts. John F. Kennedy was the first catholic president. Barack Obama was the first African-American president. Personally, I’m waiting for the first former AWA World Tag Team Champion president. Now it could be Doug Somers, could be Marty Jannetty. But, I’d like it to be you. Governor Jesse Ventura, will that day come in my lifetime?”

Again, The Body tells it like it is:

“If there’s a grassroots movement to get me ballot access in all 50 states and if they can somehow guarantee – either they protest their brains out to make sure – I’m included in debates. Because you have to be able to debate, I would give it serious consideration. But I’m not going to spend money to get ballot access. It would have to be grassroots effort by people in every state. I need to know that. Because the thing I find most despicable about public service is the obscene money and the sellout and bribery. Jesse Ventura will not sell out to the bribery of special interests. I never took a dime of special interest money when I was governor and I never once, in four years as governor, met with a lobbyist. And I will keep that integrity. So that will require the American people to have to jump through a lot of hoops to get me to do it. Plus, it would mean I would have to leave Mexico and it will require that amount of work from you all to ever even get me to entertain the thought.”

Remember, Jesse Ventura is one of over 300 guests you can hear the moment you join ClubWWI.com. From Jerry Lawler to Dennis Stamp, everyone is there in our 7 year archives. Join the Insanity today and hear all you’ve been missing!

Jesse Ventura Talks About Jerry Lawler’s Situation, If He Should Still Be Wrestling

WWE Hall of Famer Jesse “The Body” Ventura spoke briefly to Dave Lagreca and Doug Mortman on Busted Open about the Jerry Lawler situation. You can hear Busted Open on Sirius 94, XM 208, and Sports Zone 860:

Ventura on Jerry Lawler: “I didn’t learn about Jerry Lawler until this morning. Somebody mentioned it to me on an earlier interview. I wish him well. Jerry is one of the guys out there that I know pretty good and he is a very good man. He always treated me fair. He was always an honorable guy to me, so “get well soon Jerry and get back there.”

On working with Lawler: “I’m the only guy who went to Memphis who beat Lawler and he never beat me back. But there is a side story to that. I had won the Central States title from Jerry and he would have beaten me eventually but there were some problems when my daughter was born and I had to stay in Minnesota. Lawler was flying me into Memphis 3 days a week, every week, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. I had to stay with my daughter for a month when she was born because she was born with some complications. So I couldn’t come back and had to Fed Ex the belt to Jerry. That’s the reason he never beat me. I am probably the only wrestler in history that ever beat Jerry Lawler in Memphis and Jerry never beat me. Down the line however he certainly would have beaten me for that title.”

Was he surprised Lawler was still wrestling at 62: “A heart attack can hit anybody at anytime. You got to be in shape, that’s why I continue to work out. You got to keep yourself in shape. I personally don’t think anyone that age should be in the ring… not at all. It’s a young man’s game. I wouldn’t do it, I wouldn’t even consider it. I had my hip done. I wouldn’t even consider getting in the ring today. I wouldn’t have considered it ten years ago. When I left, I left. Notice I am the only wrestler who retired, who stayed retired. I never made a comeback. I hate to say this but I haven’t watched wrestling in 22 years. I watched a little bit before I was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame and I watched it a little bit before Vince brought me back before that Monday Night Raw. I felt I should at least know who the wrestlers are.”

Jesse Ventura Explains Why Vince McMahon Is Mad At Him

In his latest interview with CYInterview.com, Jesse Ventura discussed numerous political, entertainment and wrestling topics among other things. Speaking with Chris Yandek and Jay Bildstein, the former Governor of Minnesota says Vince McMahon got mad at him because he wouldn’t support Linda McMahon’s failed United States Senate run in 2010. He hasn’t spoken to Vince since.

“I haven’t spoken to Vince since he got mad at me ‘cause I wouldn’t endorse Linda for the senate…He got mad at me because I was on Good Morning America or something and they asked me would you support Linda McMahon? And I said no. But let me explain, I don’t support any Democrats or Republicans. She’s running as a Republican and I don’t support anyone from those two parties no matter who they are and so it was nothing personal against Linda, but Vince got real mad at me that I said that on national TV, but he should’ve known better.”

Governor Ventura supports former Governor of New Mexico Gary Johnson in the 2012 Presidential Elections. Mr. Johnson is the Libertarian candidate and will be on the ballot in all 50 states:

“I will fully support Governor Johnson. I know him. We were Governors at the same time. He is a terrific man. He’s left the Republican Party because he sees what a farce they are and I urge everybody that reads this book vote for Gary Johnson for president. Don’t vote for Democrats or Republicans. Vote for Governor Johnson.”
