Jimmy Snuka Charged With Third-Degree Murder & Involuntary Manslaughter

WWE Hall of Famer “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka has been charged with third-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter for the death of his girlfriend more than 32 years ago.

In his 2012 autobiography, Snuka maintained his innocence and said Argentino’s death ruined his life.

“Many terrible things have been written about me hurting Nancy and being responsible for her death, but they are not true,” he wrote. “This has been very hard on me and very hard on my family. To this day, I get nasty notes and threats. It hurts. I never hit Nancy or threatened her.”

Back on May 10th, 1983, Snuka wrestled on a WWE TV taping from the Allentown Fairgrounds in Pennsylvania. When he got back to his hotel room, he alleged that he found Nancy Argentino gasping for air and oozing yellow fluid from her nose and mouth. She died the following day from traumatic brain injures. She also had a number of cuts and bruises which suggested domestic abuse. The autopsy report stated her injuries were consistent with being hit with a “stationary object.”

The forensic pathologist suggested that the case be invested as a homicide, but no charges were filed until today. An investigation was reopened last year when Pennsylvania’s Morning Call newspaper published an in-depth story on the alleged murder, which led to a grand jury investigation that ultimately resulted in Snuka being charged.

DA To Announce Findings Of Jimmy Snuka Grand Jury Probe This Afternoon

The District Attorney of Pennsylvania’s Lehigh County will hold a press conference this afternoon to announce developments in the ongoing grand jury investigation into the 1983 death of Nancy Argentino, the former girlfriend of WWE Hall of Famer Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka.

Snuka was considered a person of interest in the 1983 death of Argentino, who was only 23 at the time. Her autopsy found that she suffered more than two dozen cuts and bruises, a possible sign of “mate abuse.”

The murder took place at the former George Washington Motor Lodge, where Argentino was found. A forensic pathologist wrote at the time that the case should be investigated as a homicide, but Snuka was never charged.

If you’ve never read it, check out The Morning Call’s investigative report on the Snuka situation that launched the grand jury probe.

  • Press Release Issued On Grand Jury Investigating 1983 Death Of Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka’s Girlfriend

As reported today, it was announced that a Pennsylvania County grand jury will investigate the 1983 death of Nancy L. Argentino, the girlfriend of WWE Hall of Famer Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka.

District Attorney Jim Martin determined that after taking a “fresh look” at the cold case, there is enough evidence for the Lehigh County grand jury to review it. His decision to re-examine the case stemmed from a report in the Allentown, Pennsylvania-based newspaper The Morning Call seven months ago, which published a story concerning Argentino’s death. The article revealed an autopsy report and police interviews that were never released to the public.

The following press release concerning the case was issued.

SEVENTH INVESTIGATING GRAND JURY IN LEHIGH COUNTY TO REVIEW 1983 DEATH OF NEW YORK WOMAN

Lehigh County District Attorney James B. Martin has directed that evidence in the 1983 death of Nancy L. Argentino of New York be presented to the Seventh Investigating Grand Jury.

Argentino, 23, of Brooklyn, N.Y., died on May 11, 1983, in Allentown.

District Attorney Martin has issued the following statement regarding the death:

“Several months ago, I was contacted by the surviving sisters of Nancy L. Argentino, who died under unusual circumstances. I directed Chief Deputy District Attorney Charles F. Gallagher III to conduct a preliminary review of the investigative file and any and all evidence that was gathered over the past 30 years by the lead Detective, former Whitehall Township Detective and now Lehigh County Detective Gerald Procanyn, and others.

“Chief Deputy District Attorney Gallagher has recommended that the District Attorney’s Office utilize the power and resources of the current Investigating Grand Jury in this matter.

Accordingly, I directed that the circumstances surrounding the death of Nancy L. Argentino, and all evidence related thereto, be presented to the Seventh Investigating Grand Jury, which is currently empanelled.

“Grand Jury proceedings are a time-consuming process, and it will take months before the Grand Jury concludes its work on this case.

“Under the Investigating Grand Jury Act, 42 Pa.C.S.A. §4541 et seq., the proceedings of the Grand Jury are secret and may not be disclosed. Accordingly, I will have no further comment on this matter until the Investigating Grand Jury concludes its work.”

Police To Reopen The Death Case Of Jimmy Snuka’s Girlfriend 30 Years Ago

A grand jury in Pennsylvania will investigate the 1983 death of Nancy L. Argentino, the girlfriend of professional wrestler Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka. The news comes less than three weeks after the release of an autopsy report and police interviews that had never been seen by the public.

District Attorney Jim Martin said Tuesday, “I think it’s important to have a grand jury take a look at it and we’ll see what they think.”

Argentino was rushed out of Snuka’s George Washington Motor Lodge motel room on May 10, 1983. Snuka, a married man, had returned from a WWF TV taping at the Allentown Fairgrounds to find Argentino “gasping for air and oozing yellow fluid from her mouth and nose.” She was declared dead hours later at Lehigh Valley Hospital.

According to the recently released autopsy report, the 23 year old Brooklyn, N.Y. native died of “traumatic brain injuries consistent with a moving head striking a stationary object.”

She also suffered more than two dozen cuts and bruises on on her head, ear, chin, arms, hands, back, buttocks, legs and feet.

Forensic pathologist Isidore Mihalakis wrote at the time of the case that it should be investigated as a homicide until proved otherwise, according to records first made public by the Call last year.

Snuka originally told at least five people (including the responding police officer) he shoved Argentino, causing her to fall and hit her head.

He later told police he was misunderstood – and Argentino slipped and hit her head when they stopped along the highway to go to the bathroom.

WWE To Induct An Actual Match Into 2014 Class Of The WWE Hall Of Fame?

WWE is playing around with the idea of inducting a match into the 2014 class of the WWE Hall Of Fame in April.

According to a recent PWInsider.com report, the idea being pitched in WWE right now is for Hulk Hogan, Roddy Piper, Paul Orndorff and Mr. T to be inducted, making it the first time in history that an actual match itself is inducted into WWE’s Hall Of Fame, as all four were involved in the main event of the first ever WrestleMania.

It’s possible that Jimmy Snuka and Bob Orton Jr. will also be inducted, as they were part of the WrestleMania I main event as well. If the idea comes to fruition, it would leave the door open for future matches to be inducted into the Hall Of Fame as well.

Mr. T has reportedly turned down offers from WWE in the past, but company officials are reportedly negotiating with him to make the aforementioned idea possible.

Obviously if this idea pans out, it would make Hogan, Piper, Orndorff, as well as Orton and Snuka if they are involved, two-time Hall Of Famers. The only two-time Hall Of Famer at the moment is Ric Flair, who was both inducted as an individual and as part of the Four Horsemen.

Jimmy Snuka Interview: The Piper’s Pit Coconut Incident, Capt. Lou Albano, Bob Backlund & More

WWE Hall of Famer ‘Superfly’ Jimmy Snuka joined Kayfabe Wrestling Radio Tuesday Night. In a nearly 30 minute interview, which you can listen to here (.MP3), he discussed how he got the ‘Snuka’ wrestling name, transitioned from bodybuilding into professional wrestling, wrestling in the pacific Northwest, coming through the territory system and meeting his future manager Captain Lou Albano, his feelings on soon to be WWE Hall of Famer Bob Backland, what the atmosphere was like when Vince Jr. took over the WWE in the 80’s, his famous moment flying off the steel cage at Madison Square Garden and how it is inspiring to many other wrestlers, his famous moment in Pipers Pit with the coconut, being ringside for Wrestlemania 1, the backstage feelings some may have had for Mr. T, the growth of Wrestlemania, being the first of the Undertaker’s Wrestlemania ‘Streak’, his kids being in wrestling and so much more.

Here are some highlights of what Snukka said about:

His time wrestling in the Pacific Northwest: “Yeah, brudda, When I came to the Pacific Northwest, it was a dream come true for me, you know? I wrestled there every Saturday and then, on the weekends, we drove all around Oregon. The weather was great and I loved it. My dreams were starting to fulfill and then getting to perform in from of people like that; I did so much and I learned so much from these old school guys, the old-timers. I was very lucky, to be there among them and learn what I have to do and what I’m not supposed to do. And I was very lucky because I got a lot of help from the old school guys, you know?”

His relationship with his manager Captain Lou Albamo: “Yeah, brudda, he did my bookings cause he and I were always together and the promoters would let us know where we were going and everything. You know, he was my leader; I’d listen and I don’t say nothing until he says, ‘Ok, you can talk now’. But he was such an awesome guy, to be with him and god bless him he’s in heaven now. The great thing about it was he taught me who was good and who was bad, and I took advice and kicked back and listened to everything, brudda.

His feelings on future WWE Hall of Famer Bob Backlund: “You get that right brudda, you said the magic word. He was great to wrestle against; I mean, he was coming out of college, he was in good shape and everything, he looked good. He looked like a champion. And it was such a great pleasure, for me, to have the opportunity to wrestle him; you know the education that me and him put together, we learned a lot from each other. At it was such a special night for me, because I wrestled him twice and the second time was the best, greatest psychology I ever had with him because we clicked. We took care of it, do it right, because when we go back to that locker room brudda, you want to feel good and make sure you continue feeling that way.”

His famous cage leap at Madison Square Garden and how it inspired a generation of wrestlers: “You know, brudda, nobody really expected me to do that dive off the top of the cage. And to have all these beautiful guys that came to the show all the young professional wrestlers coming up; I didn’t even know what they were there until after the match was all over and everything and maybe even a day or so and I hear about it, that they were there. And I was very impressed that I could give them that feeling.”

His famous moment with Roddy Piper and the Piper’s Pit with the coconut to the head: “The most important thing about this whole thing with the coconut is I had to think ‘what can I do to prepare for what is going to happen with this coconut’. How was it going to go and work out the way he’s going to have to communicate with me because if we do it right, it’s going to be done right. So, he hit me with the coconut, the pineapples, the bananas all right, so when it came time for that last coconut, I was just staring him down because I ain’t going to look away, you know, I’ve got to see everything happening, you know? When it happened, brudda, when it happened and he hit me over the head with that coconut; thank God I had my bandana on, you know? But still it cut me open and I got so dizzy. I just kept going one way and I remember going into a wall and went down. That whole thing, brudda, is where it started. We both knew, when it was all said and done, I told him ‘I think we got them’.”
