Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medallist Gable Steveson has been on the radar of WWE and UFC for quite some time.
The amateur great reportedly wants a move to pro wrestling, and he has confirmed that he will be in attendance at SummerSlam 2021, although as a fan.
Speaking to Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, Gable Steveson said that he is going to the show mainly to see The Head of The Table, Roman Reigns.
Gable Steveson on Roman Reigns
“I’m heading over to Vegas to watch the champ Roman Reigns do his thing. John Cena is great, but he’s still going to have to acknowledge Roman Reigns” Steveson stated.
The Olympian also revealed who he would want to manage him should he ever make his way to the squared circle and WWE.
“If I ever go to WWE, I’d be a ‘Paul Heyman Guy’” Steveson revealed. “Heyman is a legend. We’d be two people doing great things, and that would be a tough team to beat.”
“And I’ve known Brock since I was in high school” Gable Steveson added. “He’s been there for me for a long time, making sure I do things the right way and put my best foot forward.”

WWE SmackDown Superstar and Universal Champion Roman Reigns recently appeared on the Pat McAfee Show. The Head of The Table discussed several topics during his time on the show, including his SummerSlam opponent, John Cena.
“There’s a lot of good things John has done, obviously, Make-A-Wish, very charitable guy” Roman Reigns began on the show. “When it comes to our profession of sports entertainment, he’s levels below me in this game.”
“Entertainment is storytelling” Reigns added. “I’m the greatest storyteller of our generation and our time. He’s a big name and a big star, but he, like so many other greats, they camouflage themselves and disguise themselves.”
Roman Reigns on John Cena
“You see me every Friday night, I have to dull this sh*t down” the Universal Champion noted. “I come out there in sweatpants and J’s. I don’t throw on the crazy colors and wear wristbands all over my body or make myself something that I’m not.”
Roman Reigns vs John Cena for the Universal Championship will be headlining SummerSlam 2021 on Saturday, August 21st from he Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Matt Riddle says he and John Cena are “bros” but at first they didn’t quite see eye to eye. Riddle spoke to Sportskeeda recently and talked about his “bro-off” segment with Cena as well as Randy Orton’s reaction to it.
“John Cena is pretty cool. Originally, when we first met, we didn’t see eye to eye. He didn’t really understand what a bro was, but now he gets it. We’re bros. After John did that little promo with me on the mic, we bro’d off to each other, Randy (Orton) hit me up, and he goes, ‘I don’t know if you know this kid, but John Cena just gave you the rub.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, I know what the rub is Randy,’” Riddle said (transcriptions via Wrestling Inc.).
Riddle continued to say that sometimes Orton speaks to him as if he hasn’t been wrestling long. He says he has to explain to Orton that he’s been around for awhile and recognizes what Cena did for him during that segment.
“Randy talks to me like I don’t know what wrestling is sometimes, and I have to be like, ‘Randy, I’ve wrestled on the indies. I’ve been in WWE a couple of years, not at your level, for sure, but I know what I’m doing. I know what the rub is. I know what Cena did. We’re cool. I got this,’ but I was very excited about that. John doesn’t have to and didn’t have to do that, and he went out of his way to make it part of the show and we did it. So made me happy and then we even tagged together later that night on the darker part of the show, where it was off-camera. It was a lot of fun.”
It was a big episode of WWE RAW this week for Riddle and Orton. Most of the episode centered around Orton telling Riddle they were no longer a team. Orton would face AJ Styles in the main event, however, and Riddle came out to prevent Omos from getting involved. At the end of the night, after Riddle had come to Orton’s aide, Orton gave Riddle an RKO. It’s still not clear if they will continue teaming together.
John Cena brings a different energy to the WWE programming whenever he makes an appearance. He always seems to be a cut above the other competitors and his charisma in the ring is unmatched.
With so many stories about the company holding the performers back from unleashing their full potential, many wonder if the Cenation Leader has more creative control over his character.
John talked about this notion from fans during a recent interview on ID1OT with Chris Hardwick. While many believe the former world champion gets to do whatever he wants, Cena claimed otherwise:
“I heard it so much in WWE, ‘Well, Vince lets him do whatever he wants. That’s why he can consistently perform at a level that is acceptable and entertaining to the audience. He gets to do whatever he wants.’
Nope, I ask, I execute, I invest, and I’m meticulous with the detail, I’m consistent night in and night out, trustworthy, giving of self. The perception everyone else has is, ‘he has a better situation.’”
John Cena continued his explanation saying he is not taking away from anyone’s struggles because he has learned to appreciate everyone’s struggles:
“I’m not taking away from anyone’s struggle and I have learned to appreciate everyone’s struggle and everyone has a different struggle. I can understand where those feelings come from.”
John Cena made his most recent WWE return during the Money In The Bank PPV last month. He is currently scheduled to challenge Roman Reigns for the Universal championship at SummerSlam.
While John Cena has moved on from being a full-time WWE star and made a spot for himself in Hollywood, he still has a special place in his heart for the company where he originally made his name.
The Cenation Leader recently appeared on ID10T with Chris Hardwick podcast where he talked about a number of things including his recent WWE return.
During the interview, Cena revealed that the officials had originally asked him to come back for only a few dates but he decided to do more shows than that:
“They asked me to come back for only a few dates. I was like ‘no, I want to do all these dates.’ To one, get back in front of an audience, two to help the brand get audiences back in the building.
And then when you offer all these dates, someone may say ‘well what about this? What about that, now that you’re in? I know that you may have some time.’” said Cena, “‘No, these are my expectations. This is the best I can do with the best I can give you.’”
Apart from this, the former champion also talked about making a WWE return at the age of 44 and how he has been open about the effects his age is showing on his body.
John Cena said that he does not have a lot of time left when it comes to wrestling but he explained that he will keep doing it until he feels like he is offending the customer. You can check out his comments here.
WWE Superstar John Cena recently spoke to Chris Hardwick on ID1OT. The 16-time World Champion discussed several topics during the interview, which would include how long he intends on wrestling with the company.
“Returning to WWE, it’s a brand new world” John Cena would begin the interview. “A new cast of characters, new direction with the company, new platforms, new environment. There is a challenge there.”
“To challenge myself as a 44-year-old to go back, there is an intrinsic challenge there, a set of circumstances. That’s a good challenge in many ways. My body could tell me after this extended stay, ‘dude, you’re done’ or it could tell me, ‘You’re so far from done it’s crazy’” Cena would continue.
John Cena on WWE return
“That’s another interesting conversation with myself. If physically, I’m slower, I’ve said openly to everyone that I will keep doing this until I feel I’m offending the customer” Cena revealed. “I will continually go out there and do what I can to contribute and add.”
“If I get the opposite and it’s like, ‘You’re quicker and can do some things better and define a new personality,’ then that’s a new conversation because I do not have much time left and if I want to give it like, ‘let’s really commit to this thing and really go all in,’ that’s an honest choice where other stuff will have to take a backseat” John Cena would conclude.
John Cena is set to main event WWE SummerSlam 2021 against the ‘Head of The Table’ Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship.
The return of fans to wrestling was always going to be a big thing for any company. The reaction of a live audience cannot ever be replaced. When John Cena made his return to a WWE ring last month, the pop that he received was unlike anything heard before. A man who divides people’s opinions so strongly had everybody on their feet.
Yes, it was inevitable given the fact that it was the first Raw with fans following Covid. However, John Cena remains a huge name. He is Mr WWE, and love him or hate him, he has served the company well during his tenure. However, Cena is no spring chicken. A fact he is painfully aware of.
“Man, I wish there was some sort of fountain of youth where I could be a full-time contributor. ” John Cena said during a recent USA Today interview with Brian Truitt.
Father time catches up with us all. Athlete or not, champion or not. There is nothing we can do about it. The next generation comes along and replaces us. John Cena knows this, and however much he would wish it were different, he accepts it. Talking further with Truitt, he voiced his concerns with WWE’s insistence on running with returning older talent as a means of boosting the company profile.
John Cena Is Set to Main Event Summerslam Against Roman Reigns
John Cena and Goldberg returned the same night to lay down challenges for the WWE’s top two titles at Summerslam. As a performer, there is no denying that Cena is in love with professional wrestling. However, he understands the need for generation replacement. It worries him that WWE’s long-term stability could be rocky should they continue to rely on returning older talent.
“The longer they continue to bet on an aging prospect, that makes (WWE’s) future a little bit less stable,” he said.
Coming from a WWE stalwart such as John Cena, these comments are not meant as a barb, nor an attack. He is merely a performer, and a fan, talking honestly. Echoing the sentiments of many. There is a host of younger talent ready to step up, but the continued reliance on marquee names from years gone by as a means of negating waning creativity is never a long-term solution.
After teases and mentions of it happening, WWE has finally confirmed that John Cena will challenge Roman Reigns for the Universal Title at SummerSlam.
On Friday’s episode of SmackDown, WWE held a contract signing that was supposed to see Reigns defend against Finn Balor at SummerSlam, but Baron Corbin came out to attack Balor in order to take his place.
Cena ran out to stop Corbin and signed the contract instead.
Cena made his return at the Money in the Bank pay-per-view event to have a staredown with Reigns to set up their SummerSlam main event. This was after the main event where Reigns had retained his title over Edge.
Since Cena has returned, he has helped boost ticket sales for SummerSlam. If he does beat Reigns it would be his 17th World Title win, which would break Ric Flair’s record. However, Cena is slated to start filming a new movie at the end of August.
Fans can expect to see Cena appear at several upcoming shows. Here’s the list of dates and locations of events that Cena will be appearing:
Saturday, July 31: Supershow – Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee
Sunday, August 1: Supershow – Little Caesars Arena in Detroit
Friday, August 6: SmackDown – Amalie Arena in Tampa, Fla.
Saturday, August 7: Supershow – Hertz Arena in Fort Myers, Fla.
Monday, August 9: Raw – Amway Center in Orlando, Fla.
Friday, August 13: SmackDown – BOK Center in Tulsa, Okla.
Saturday, August 14: Supershow – Spectrum Center in Charlotte, N.C.
Sunday, August 15: Supershow – Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, S.C.
Friday, August 20: SmackDown – Footprint Center in Phoenix
Saturday, August 21: SummerSlam – Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas
Friday, September 10: SmackDown – Madison Square Garden – New York City
John Cena is just like the majority of fans as they hope that The Rock makes a WWE return in the near future.
It’s been reported that WWE has plans for The Rock to appear at the Survivor Series pay-per-view in November to set up a rumored match with WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns at either WrestleMania 38 or WrestleMania 39.
Cena recently spoke with ET Tonight and had praise for the fellow WWE Champion. He noted that Rock is a star in his own universe and there’s no one like him and there won’t ever be like him.
“For him to be gracious enough to return to WWE, it’s own global entertainment phenomenon, that’s great for WWE and it is great for The Rock. As a fan of WWE, I really hope he returns. I think it would be special for everyone.”
In this same article, The Rock was asked if there was anything to tease regarding a potential WWE return and the future WWE Hall of Famer said there’s nothing.
The Rock is currently promoting his “Jungle Cruise” movie. Cena is back on WWE TV to promote his match with Reigns at SummerSlam.
John Cena is currently on a collision course with Roman Reigns that will culminate at WWE SummerSlam on Saturday, August 21st. Reigns has yet to formally accept Cena’s challenge, but the showdown is a foregone conclusion.
Following Cena’s surprise return at Money in the Bank, WWE announced John Cena’s summer schedule. Many fans were delighted to see that Cena’s return included multiple episodes of Raw and SmackDown, as well as non-televised live events. In total, WWE announced Cena for 15 shows. We’ve now learned the “Summer of Cena” will continue beyond SummerSlam.
John Cena to the Rescue
WWE announced on Monday that the 16-time World Champion’s current run will include a stop at Madison Square Garden on Friday, September 10th.
Over the weekend, @Wrestletix reported that WWE had sold fewer than 9,000 tickets for the September 10th Smackdown from MSG.
Early ticket sales were less-than-stellar, which led WWE to make this a “Super Show” involving talent from the Raw brand. With John Cena now advertised, WWE should have no problem getting over that 9,000 mark and might be compelled to open additional sections of the Garden, if the demand is there.
Following the conclusion of WWE Smackdown on Friday night, John Cena wrestled his first official match in almost 16 months. Cena teamed with Rey and Dominik Mysterio and defeated Roman Reigns and the Usos.
It’s the first time Cena has wrestled since facing Bray Wyatt in a rather bizarre FireFly FunHouse match at WrestleMania 36. Users on Twitter have been posting video of the match:
The Summer of Cena Begins
WWE announced recently that John Cena will be at several events this summer as part of the “Summer of Cena.” WWE.com posted a list of 14 events Cena will be at starting with last night’s Smackdown in Cleveland. Cena will be on a WWE show tonight from Pittsburgh. He’ll be at a supershow tomorrow at the rather interestingly named KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Kentucky. Cena will then be back on RAW Monday night from the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo. The next time Cena will be on Smackdown will be next week’s show from the Target Center in Minneapolis.
Cena is one of the most decorated WWE Champions of all time. He holds the record for 13 separate runs with the WWE title. His 1,254 days spent with the belt is good for fourth all time. Only Bruno Sammartino, Hulk Hogan, and Bob Backlund spent more time with the title.
John Cena will be back in WWE’s live event schedule tour this Summer.
WWE has officially revealed what Cena’s tour schedule would look like for the Summer. The plan will see Cena appear at Raw and SmackDown tapings, non-televised live events and a pay-per-view (SummerSlam) from July 23rd through August 21st.
WWE is promoting Cena’s return to the road as, the “Summer of Cena.”
In total, Cena is advertised for 15 upcoming shows. It’s worth noting that Cena is only appearing at select shows through SummerSlam. You can see the full schedule at WWE.com.
Cena vs. Reigns at SummerSlam
John Cena made his long-awaited return at this year’s Money in the Bank after Universal champion Roman Reigns defeated Edge. He appeared on last night’s episode of Raw to challenge Reigns to a championship match at Summerslam.
Cena explained why he returned and said Reigns “Needs to be knocked down a peg in the promo.” Cena also confirmed that he would be on Smackdown this Friday to confront Reigns.
The last time that Cena faced Reigns was at No Mercy at the Staples Center in Las Angeles, California, on September 24, 2017. Reigns defeated Cena with the spear.
Cena’s Challenging Tour schedule
The “Summer of Cena” will be Cena’s most demanding WWE tour schedule in quite some time. Over the past couple of years, Cena hasn’t toured with WWE to this level. His last WWE match was a firefly funhouse match against the Fiend at Wrestlemania 36 on April 5, 2020.
At 44 years old, Cena has been focusing more on his acting career than wrestling consistently. It’s unclear if he will have matches leading to Summerslam to condition himself or if he’s been training already.
WWE’s Live Event Struggles
WWE is looking to make Summerslam a big event. Cena earned a big reaction for his return at Money in the Bank and Raw. With Cena set to appear at live events throughout the Summer, it may result in more sold-out shows.
WWE has seen mixed results with ticket sales since the return of live events. Some markets have been strong, while others have struggled. WWE recently canceled shows in Georgia and Florida after slow ticket launches.
As of this writing, tickets are still available on Ticketmaster for SummerSlam as low as $25. The announcement of Cena vs. Reigns for the Universal Championship may generate interest to help sell out the event.
If you are interested in ticket sales and the business side of live wrestling shows, the @WrestleTix Twitter account has been doing excellent work lately.
WWE confirmed today that John Cena is headed to SmackDown this Friday night.
This comes after his surprise return at Money in the Bank. He’s also slated to appear on Monday’s episode of Raw. He’ll be explaining his motivation for returning. All of these appearances will be three times within a week that he’s appeared on WWE programming.
It’s been reported that Reigns vs. Cena is expected to take place at SummerSlam next month but hasn’t been officially announced.
Friday’s episode of SmackDown is taking place at two different locations – the show being held at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland, Ohio and matches airing from the Rolling Loud music festival in Miami, Florida.
Already announced for SmackDown is Bianca Belair’s SmackDown Women’s Title defense against Carmella, a match between men’s Money in the Bank winner Big E and Intercontinental Champion Apollo Crews (airing from Rolling Loud) as well as Toni Storm’s debut.
WWE has announced that John Cena will be making his comeback to Raw this Monday night to explain his return at Sunday’s Money In The Bank PPV.
The Cenation Leader had been rumored for a WWE return for quite a while. Though not a lot of people expected him to show up at Money In The Bank.
John Cena made his return after the main event of the show. Roman Reigns defeated Edge to retain his universal championship thanks to some help from Seth Rollins.
The Head of The Table, Roman Reigns was standing tall in the ring after his big win. He told people to acknowledge him after his victory and this is where the 16-time world champion made his return.
Cena had a staredown with the Tribal Chief as the show went off air. Now WWE has confirmed that he will be kicking off this Monday’s episode of Raw from American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.
WWE posted a video hyping Cena’s first Raw appearance since before WrestleMania 36. In the video as seen below, the Hollywood star claimed that he is going to explain his motivations:
John Cena is expected to face Roman Reigns at the SummerSlam PPV. We will have to see if he makes the match official during his appearance on Monday.
John Cena made his surprising return after tonight’s Money In The Bank main event between the Universal Champion Roman Reigns and WWE Hall Of Famer Edge. The Tribal Chief won this match with some help from Seth Rollins. The Cenation Leader showed up after the match was over and had a stare down with the Head Of The Table.
The cameras stopped rolling with Roman Reigns standing in the ring as Cena celebrated with the fans. Though this wasn’t the end of the PPV, as John addressed the fans after the show went off air.
John Cena confirmed that his appearance was not only for one night”
“Tonight I just wanted to come out here and let Roman Reigns know that I was back,” said Cena, “and I certainly wanted to come out here and let all of you know that I am back. I promise you this is not a one-night-only, but what’s special to me is this is the first night.”
Roman Reigns had already left the ring so the fans will have to wait until this Friday’s SmackDown to see these two exchanging words ahead of their reported SummerSlam match.
Apart from the Roman Reigns vs. John Cena match, the company also set up the Edge vs. Seth Rollins match during tonight’s show.
You can check out the full Money In The Bank results at this link.
John Cena made his grand return on Sunday night at the WWE Money in the Bank pay-per-view event in Fort Worth, Texas at Dickies Arena.
It happened after Roman Reigns had successfully retained the WWE Universal Title over Edge in the main event thanks to outside interference from Seth Rollins. Cena, who had bright new colors, got a massive pop from the live crowd.
After running the ropes and legitimately showing excitement, he had a staredown with Reigns before doing his signature, “you can’t see me” hand sign, to lead to the show going off the air.
It’s been reported that Cena will challenge Reigns for the Universal Title at next month’s SummerSlam in Las Vegas. The build of that program just began.
Cena hadn’t been on WWE television since WrestleMania 36 where he took part in the Firefly Fun House match against Bray Wyatt. It was a trip down memory lane for Cena.
Cena has continued his Hollywood career while being away from WWE. He started serving as the host of TBS’ Wipeout series, filmed the second Suicide Squad movie, the Peacemaker series, and starred in the most recent Fast & Furious movie, F9.
It’s been known via various reports that John Cena is headed back to WWE, but exactly when he would make his return has been unknown.
That has changed as Fightful Select reported today that Cena is scheduled to appear on WWE programming over the next two weeks. The working plan for Cena is for him to appear on the July 23 episode of WWE SmackDown, if not sooner than that.
The July 23rd edition of Friday Night SmackDown takes place from Cleveland, Ohio at the Rocket Mortgage Field House. (Tickets)
Of course, plans change, pal, but that’s the working plan as of this writing.
John Cena’s WWE Return
Cena will be part of the cast of the new “Argylle” movie. The project will start filming in Europe this August and released next year.
Dave Meltzer reported on Tuesday’s Wrestling Observer Radio that Cena’s movie commitments are “not a hurdle” for him to appear at SummerSlam. Cena is expected to clash with Universal Champion Roman Reigns at summer spectacular on Saturday, August 21st.
John Cena’s last WWE television appearance took place at WrestleMania 36, when he battled Bray Wyatt in the Firefly Fun House match.
Last week it was revealed that John Cena has signed on to be part of a spy thriller film franchise titled “Argylle.” The first in 3 planned films in the franchise is set to begin filming in Europe next month.
Matthew Vaughn will direct an all-star cast including Henry Cavill, Samuel L Jackson, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, Sam Rockwell, and Bryce Dallas Howard.
John Cena’s Status for SummerSlam
With filming on the project set to begin in Europe next month, there had been some speculation this could potentially impact Cena appearing at SummerSlam. According to comments on Wrestling Observer Radio, however, filming of the movie will not impact Cena’s planned role on the show.
“This is what I was told today, the movie thing is not a hurdle,” Dave Meltzer said on the show. “The belief is that it’s all going down, the match is happening,” Meltzer continued.
John Cena recently confirmed he is returning to WWE. During a recent appearance on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Cena said, “Those rumors are true. I’ll definitely be back in WWE, I just don’t know when. I haven’t had my last much and I can’t wait to have my next one.”
The 16-time World champion is rumored to be facing Roman Reigns in the main event of SummerSlam, which takes place Sunday, August 21st from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
John Cena has signed on to be part of an upcoming film franchise that already has three movies planned. An all-star cast will take part in the spy thriller series including Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell, Bryce Dallas Howard, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, and Samuel L. Jackson.
Dua Lipa will provide the soundtrack for the film and also make her acting debut. Kingsmen director Matthew Vaughan will direct.
“When I read this early draft manuscript I felt it was the most incredible and original spy franchise since Ian Fleming’s books of the ’50s,” said Vaughan. “This is going to reinvent the spy genre.”
It is not yet clear what Cena’s role in the film series will be. Filming begins in Europe next month, which if Cena is involved in early shooting, could cause problems for him appearing at SummerSlam. It’s not yet clear when Cena would need to be on set for filming, however.
Cena did confirm recently on the Tonight Show that he plans to return to WWE.
“Those rumors are true. I’ll definitely be back in WWE, I just don’t know when,” Cena said when asked about a possible return to WWE.
“I haven’t had my last much and I can’t wait to have my next one,” he continued.
“Once you do one of these things (a big film), the insurance doesn’t let you go wrestle on the weekends, so we’ll see what happens,” Cena also said.
WWE Superstar John Cena recently made some pretty bold comments regarding pop star Cardi B. Speaking to Vice, Cena would say that Cardi B would be a great WWE Superstar if that was something she wanted to pursue.
“Cardi B would be a hell of a WWE superstar” Cena began. “What I admire most about her is she is authentically herself – through good, bad and indifferent – and I think that’s an admirable quality.”
“To have enough confidence and love in yourself to be yourself in any given situation, I think that’s very impressive” John Cena would continue.
John Cena on Cardi B
“She’s so identifiable as Cardi B, it would be tough for her to be anyone else” Cena claimed. “It’s not like Cardi B goes to record a track and then she’s a different person outside the studio – she’s always Cardi B.”
“Cardi, Ludacris and Tyrese could all have their own entrance music!” The 16-time World Champion would conclude.
With the mainstream buzz and success of Bad Bunny around WrestleMania 37, it’s clear that WWE would want to bring in more pop icons to build engagement on social media and mainstream appeal. Cardi B is arguably a bigger name than Bad Bunny in terms of the US audience; so she could be hugely beneficial if WWE are able to utilize her services.
Cardi B was originally slated to host the SummerSlam 2021 PPV event, however she recently revealed that she was pregnant; so she may not be available for the show in Las Vegas this August. This has however not yet been confirmed.
Cena talked about McIntyre’s comments in his interview with Demand Entertainment to promote Fast & Furious 9. John said that he always appreciates being mentioned in such a conversation. However, he explained that Drew is just setting himself up for disappointment:
“Man, what a way to set yourself up for disappointment. In no way shape or form is Drew in a position to make matches or make things happen — and I’m not either. Neither of us have that power, that’s beyond our capacity, so, I certainly am grateful for being mentioned, which is awesome.”
John Cena On Why He Never Thinks About Potential Opponents
John Cena went on to explain his comments. He said that while he has more matches left in WWE, he never thinks about which opponents he wants to face because he’s not the one making the decision:
“I got more matches left in the WWE, I’m not done, but I’ve never approached anything like, ‘I’d like to work with this person, or I want to have a match with this person’ because I don’t make those choices.
They say, ‘Hey, we’d like you to do this.’ Alright, it’s time to go to work. And that’s really allowed me to enjoy every step of the way. I think if we build up expectations in our head — like, I hate to say this to Drew, but if that never happens, how is he supposed to feel about that?”
John Cena has confirmed that he will make a return in previous interviews as well but an exact date for his comeback has not been confirmed yet.
Would you like to see a match between John Cena and Drew McIntyre when the Cenation Leader returns? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
John Cena is one of the most successful wrestlers in the history of the business. Not only was he the face of WWE for more than 15 years but he has carved a place for himself in Hollywood after moving on from the company as well.
However, his rise to the top was not an easy journey. The former world champion recently had an interview with The Sun where he opened up about his struggles before becoming a professional wrestler.
Cena recalled the time he left his home in Massachusetts and went to Los Angeles to pursue a career in bodybuilding. Due to the lack of resources, the former world champion slept in his car and showered in a gym he worked at:
“I slept in my car for a while, which happened to be a very roomy 1991 Lincoln Town Car. I had my clothes in the trunk and I slept in the back seat. I’d wake up, use the locker rooms and the shower and repeat the process all over again.”
Dad told me I would be home with my tail between my legs in two weeks. Sure enough, I went through my resources quickly and had to think on my feet. I didn’t want to go home crying.”
John Cena had previously ruled out the possibility of having kids. This is one of the primary reasons why his engagement with fellow WWE star Nikki Bella ended.
However, now that Cena is a little older and has a lot more experience on his hands, he is considering a change to his stand. Talking about it during the interview, he didn’t rule out the possibility of fatherhood completely:
“I’m a little bit older, a bit wiser. I’m realising there is life and life exists and it’s beautiful — and I think part of that is being a parent, so we’ll see.”
John Cena started dating Canadian engineer Shay Shariatzadeh in early 2019 after his breakup with Nikki Bella. The couple got married in a private ceremony in October 2020.
WWE has the long-standing tradition that the top star of the company also serves as the locker room leader. This creates some interesting dynamics when a former locker room leader returns and has to adapt to the change. One such scenario is likely to be presented when John Cena returns to the company later this month and confronts the current face of the company – Roman Reigns.
The Big Dog discussed this during a recent interview with Peter Rosenberg and Stat Guy Greg on Hot 97. The Tribal Chief was asked about this change and whether he sees himself being in a different position in the relationship with the Cenation Leader now that he has taken up the mantle. Replying to the question, the Universal champion reminded everyone that this won’t be the first time he is crossing paths with Cena after becoming the locker room leader:
“So I think there are a couple of different folds to this scenario because even before, I forget which year it was, I know it was at No Mercy, when me and John went to [fight for the] first time. I had already been in that position. John had been around periodically jumping in kind [of] on interval, stretches but I was still the main event. If he jumped in to a live event to help out a show he would go on before intermission. He would find himself in a different position. I would close us out.”
Roman Reigns admitted that things are different now after he has spent a lot more time in the top position. However, he claimed that they have respect for the superstars who came before them. Reigns said that it would be a lie if someone said that John Cena didn’t toe the train for a long time.
The reigning champion explained that their return is a good thing because the people who have moved on from WWE only bring new eyes to the product when they come back:
“What’s beautiful about it is the respect everyone has for our history and the respect we have for the superstars who pull that wagon and there is no question you know. It would be a bold face lie if anyone ever say [that] John Cena didn’t toe the train for a long time and we’re gonna always have respect for that, Vince will always have great respect for that. Guys like The Undertaker, that’s why we have these legendary contracts where we keep these guys. They paid their dues. They guided our business. They laid the foundation for us to continue this journey and continue this success that we have.
“So I think there is always gonna be that scenario out of respect. When they come back, it’s only to bring more eyes and kind of lift the tide up to make it a bigger event. But when you have someone like myself and John was in the same position with Dwayne. Hopefully one day I will be in the same position coming back and there will be a new head guy. There will be a new top dog. That’s what drives the business and that’s what makes us even greater is when our guys go out and find great success, and then they bring that limelight. They bring that shine back to what started them, back to their first love.”
On the topic of the people who can replace him as the face of WWE and locker room leader, Roman Reigns said that currently there is no one on his level. He was asked which current star has the potential to be the next face. He named the former WWE champion Drew McIntyre. Reigns claimed that McIntyre is the number two guy in the company currently but he is not on his level yet:
“There ain’t nobody. I can say my favorite number two [is] Drew. He’s my favorite number two. There’s a bunch of number twos, threes, whatever you wanna call them, we can rank them [but] it really doesn’t matter. They are under me. How far under? Who knows. Who really cares. I mean how strong of a number two do you wanna be? At this point, my favorite is Drew McIntyre,
“In a perfect world if there is an opportunity to pass the torch. He is the one guy that has captivated my attention in that manner but at the same time he ain’t there and it’s only because I am still here so solid within my foothold. The flag is fully planted in so I can’t even think about it now. Like John needed somebody to come in so he could move on and try new things and take care of his body. I would eventually need that but there is just nobody at this point.”

John Cena addressed his pending return to in-ring action on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon last night.
“Those rumors are true. I’ll definitely be back in WWE, I just don’t know when,” Cena said when asked about a possible return to WWE.
“I haven’t had my last much and I can’t wait to have my next one,” he continued.
Cena also addressed how his film career will impact his WWE return as well. Issues with insurance have to be worked out for him to return.
“Once you do one of these things (a big film), the insurance doesn’t let you go wrestle on the weekends, so we’ll see what happens,” Cena also said.

John Cena vs Roman Reigns At SummerSlam?
Cena’s rumoured match for SummerSlam in August is against Roman Reigns. During an interview with the ACC network, Reigns addressed possibly facing Cena on the show.
“If John wants to get smashed, then he knows where I’m at, when it comes to whooping people’s ass, I do not discriminate. Luchadores, mat wrestlers, legends, Hollywood superstars, anybody. Anybody can get it.”
Cena also addressed how his role in F9 could possibly lay the foundation for a heel turn in WWE during a recent interview with Chris Van Vliet.
“I think this is a beginning to showcase the fact that it’s possible,” Cena responded when asked if F9 was the heel turn fans never saw in WWE. “Now as WWE invests and builds its roster and has a wealth of talent, it truly has many different anchors to the ship.”
John Cena’s next big project is DC’s Suicide Squad sequel directed by James Gunn. The cenation leader will be playing the role of Peacemaker in the movie.
During a recent interview with Collider, the 16 time world champion offered some high praise to Gunn and compared him to the WWE chairman, Vince McMahon.
Cena first discussed James Gunn’s approach to his projects, explaining that he is very hands on with all the different aspects of the production of a movie:
“James is everything, and the reason he is such a great director is because he assumes all roles. He creates the story from the ground up, he supervises the story as a producer, he manages all personalities.”
John Cena went on to compare the Guardians Of The Galaxy director to the WWE chairman Vince McMahon. He mentioned how the boss likes to be involved in everything, just like Gunn:
“I think his ability to have his hands in everything—he’s almost like the Vince McMahon of a movie. Vince is involved in everything and wants to be.
And I mean everything from—and this is James as well—marketing, certainly putting himself out there. ‘Suicide Squad: A James Gunn Film’, he’s putting his stamp on that which means he believes in the product.”
The former world champion said that Gunn is able to do all this very fluently because he is invested in every piece and has confidence in what he does.
The Suicide Squad sequel featuring John Cena and others is expected to hit theaters on August 6. You can check out the latest trailer of the movie below:
