NJPW Announces Jushin ‘Thunder’ Liger’s Last Ever US Match

Jushin ‘Thunder’ Liger is currently on his retirement run heading into next year’s two-day Wrestle Kingdom 14 event. Since announcing his intentions to leave the ring, Liger has been touring the world facing off against a plethora of talent.

Now, the legendary Liger’s last US date has been announced. New Japan Pro-Wrestling officially revealed that Liger’s last ever US matchup will take place on November 9th.

He will be wrestling on their New Japan Showdown event, which takes place in the San Jose Civic. At the time of writing, there is no indication as to whom Liger may be competing against.

Wrestle Kingdom 14

It was announced that Liger would be wrestling his final matches across Wrestle Kingdom 14. On day one, he will team up with Tiger Mask, Tatsumi Fujinami and The Great Sasuke. They will face the team of Ryusuke Taguchi, Tatushito Takaiwa, Shinjiro Otani and Naomi Sano. Liger will also have a second retirement match on night two of Wrestle Kingdom 14 on January 5th.

His retirement tour will come to an end on January 6th at NJPW’s New Year Dash event. The promotion will host a special retirement ceremony for Liger inside the Ota City General Gymnasium in Tokyo.

Liger recently wrestled in a losing effort against Suzuki-gun leader, Minoru Suzuki. They competed at NJPW’s recent King of Pro Wrestling event in a heated grudge match.

NJPW King of Pro-Wrestling 2019 Results

New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s King of Pro-Wrestling 2019 event took place at the Ryogoku Sumo Hall in Tokyo, Japan on October 14.

This event can be watched on NJPW World.

Before the event began, NJPW ring announcer Makoto Abe announced that Jon Moxley and Zack Sabre Jr. were unable to attend the event due to flight cancellations caused by Typhoon Hagibis. Additionally, it was announced that the IWGP US Heavyweight Championship was declared vacant due to Moxley’s inability to defend the Championship. The announcement that Juice Robinson would now be competing against Lance Archer for the vacant Championship received a positive reponse.

King of Pro-Wrestling 2019 Card

Suzukigun (El Desperado & Yoshinobu Kanemaru) defeated Roppongi 3K (SHO & YOH)
This was El Desperado’s first match back since getting his jaw broken in a deathmatch against Jun Kasai in May, which resulted in his removal from the Best of the Super Juniors tournament. El Desperado entered wearing a blood-stained dress shirt and vest. After blocking SHO’s Shock Arrow, El Desperado pushed SHO into the referee, enabling Yoshinobu Kanemaru to spit whiskey in SHO’s face. El Desperado pinned SHO after the Pinche Loco. (10:44)

Hiroshi Tanahashi & Tomoaki Honma defeated Most Violent Players (Togi Makabe & Toru Yano)
This match was made to celebrate 20 years since Hiroshi Tanahashi’s wrestling debut in October 1999. Wataru Inoue, a retired NJPW wrestler who debuted at the same time as Tanahashi, was at ringside for this match. Toru Yano removed a corner turnbuckle pad and Irish whipped Hiroshi Tanahashi into it, then rolling him up for a near fall. Tanahashi hit a Sling Blade followed by the High Fly Flow to pin Toru Yano. (9:43)

Los Ingobernables de Japon (Tetsuya Naito & Shingo Takagi) defeated Suzukigun (Taichi & DOUKI)
Shingo Takagi hit DOUKI with a Pumping Bomber, and then lifted him for the Last of the Dragon, but Taichi came in and hit Shingo with his microphone stand in full view of the referee. Los Ingobernables defeated Suzukigun by disqualification. (9:00) After the match ended, Taichi downed Shingo with a high kick and Naito with a microphone stand hit, backdrop drivers, and an elevated powerbomb.

Minoru Suzuki defeated Jushin Thunder Liger
Jushin Thunder Liger entered in his Battle Liger attire, wearing only the pants portion of his bodysuit and a modified mask. Contrary to the bloodlust that Liger expressed in the leadup to this match, Liger challenged Suzuki to a technical wrestling battle. They fought for holds on the mat before Liger decided this was not a battle he could win. Suzuki battered Liger with chair shots and repeatedly tore at his mask. Liger targeted Suzuki’s arms, but Suzuki applied the sleeper hold and went for the Gotch-style piledriver, which Liger reversed into a back body drop. Suzuki pummeled Liger with strikes and Liger absorbed them, but his ripostes did not phase Suzuki. Minoru Suzuki pinned Jushin Thunder Liger after the Gotch-style piledriver. (17:38) He continued to hit Liger with chair shots after the match ended, then kneeled and bowed to the fallen Jushin Thunder Liger. Liger eventually got to his feet and said to Suzuki on the microphone, “Thank you.”

IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship Match: Will Ospreay (c) defeated El Phantasmo
El Phantasmo came out wearing non-Bullet Club gear with Taiji Ishimori in tow. Will Ospreay entered with his tag team partner, Robbie Eagles. Before the match began, El Phantasmo told Ishimori to leave, saying that he would handle this match by himself. The match began with ELP acting aggressively sportsmanlike, offering handshakes and not taking cheap shots when they were offered to him. After a matter of time, however, he dropped the act and raked Ospreay’s eyes. They fought into the crowd until they ended up on the platform above the entrance way, and ELP hit a monstrous dive on Ospreay. Ospreay hit the Oscutter and went for the pin, but Ishimori had returned to the ring and pulled the referee out of the ring. Ishimori tried to hit Ospreay with the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship, but Robbie Eagles came in and apprehended him. Phantasmo hit a low blow on Ospreay and then hit him with the Championship, then hit a frog splash for a near fall, then a Styles Clash for another near fall. Ospreay turned the tide with a Spanish fly, an Essex destroyer, and the Hidden Blade. Finally, Will Ospreay hit the Stormbreaker and pinned El Phantasmo to retain the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship. (27:58)

CHAOS (Hirooki Goto, Tomohiro Ishii & YOSHI-HASHI) defeated Bullet Club (Jay White, KENTA & Yujiro Takahashi)
The majority of the match revolved around KENTA, with him beating up YOSHI-HASHI and antagonizing Tomohiro Ishii, taunting him in the ring and provoking him when he wasn’t the legal man. Hirooki Goto hit the Ushigoroshi followed by the GTR on YOSHI-HASHI to win the match by pinfall (12:27). Ishii continued to assault KENTA after the match, while Jay White repeatedly yelled that Goto didn’t deserve to challenge him and that he was the best.

7th IWGP US Heavyweight Champion Determination Match (No Disqualification): Lance Archer defeated Juice Robinson
Before the match began, Lance Archer took the microphone and proclaimed that this match should have no disqualifications, since the fans expected to see a no DQ match. Juice agreed to it, and it was made so. Before long, Archer sent Lance crashing through a ringside table, and removed all four turnbuckle pads from the ring. Lance battered Juice every which way, leaving him with a bleeding nose and a bent finger. Both men were sent crashing into tables. After a reverse crucifix powerbomb into a pile of chairs, Lance Archer pinned Juice Robinson with the EBD Claw to win the vacant IWGP US Heavyweight Championship. (14:58)

As Lance Archer celebrated, he was attacked by the returning David Finlay, who has been sidelined with a torn labrum since February.

Wrestle Kingdom 14 IWGP Heavyweight Championship Challenge Match: Kota Ibushi (c) defeated EVIL
EVIL came into this match vexed that the reputation of the G1 winner’s right to challenge for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship had yet to change hands between the G1 and Wrestle Kingdom. EVIL pressed the advantage early, using his superior power to bully Ibushi, while Ibushi managed to keep him from maintaining the edge for too long with his quickness and strikes. Reeling from the Darkness Falls, Ibushi retaliated and hit an elevated powerbomb. Ibushi called for the Boma Ye, but a massive lariat from EVIL took him off his feet, with another lariat for good measure. EVIL went for his self-named hold, but Ibushi countered it. Ibushi attempted the Kamigoye, but EVIL reversed it. Ibushi finally hit the Kamigoye, but EVIL kicked out, so he pulled his knee pad down hit another, and pinned EVIL. (24:05) Kota Ibushi remains the named challenger for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship at Wrestle Kingdom 14 day 1.

IWGP Heavyweight Championship Match: Kazuchika Okada (c) defeated SANADA
This match began with an explosive start, as Okada rushed SANADA with dropkicks right as the bell rang. SANADA was ready for him, though, leading Okada to change tactic and try to grind SANADA down with holds. Okada got him in position for a barricade-hung DDT, but SANADA countered it and hit a barricade-hung cutter. Having fought multiple times this year, both men seemed more prepared for each other’s moves than ever before, countering them in never before seen ways. Okada went for the Tombstone piledriver only for SANADA to counter it into his own, followed by the TKO. SANADA locked in the Skull End, but Okada managed to get out of it and hit a Rainmaker, and pinned him weakly for a near fall. Okada missed the rolling Rainmaker and SANADA caught him in a swinging Skull End. SANADA let go of it to hit two top rope moonsaults, but Okada blocked the second one with his knees. Okada blocked another attempt at the Skull End and hit a spinning Tombstone piledriver, and went for the Rainmaker, but SANADA blocked it with kicks. Finally, Okada hit the Rainmaker to pin SANADA and retain the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. (36:21) Okada shook SANADA’s hand after the match.

Following the match, Kota Ibushi entered with his contract for the Wrestle Kingdom 14 IWGP Heavyweight Championship match. Kazuchika Okada versus Kota Ibushi was confirmed for Wrestle Kingdom 14 Day 1.

Why Jushin Liger Was Not Booked For NJPW’s Fighting Spirit USA Tour

Jushin Liger was missing from the NJPW’s Fighting Spirit: Unleashed Tour and the reason behind it could be storyline-based.

If you haven’t caught up with what’s going on at New Japan, here’s the gist. At the recent Destruction in Kobe event on September 22, Jushin Liger attacked Minoru Suzuki and other members of Suzuki-Gun when Suzuki attempted to remove Liger’s mask. Liger delivered a low blow to get him off, then unmask himself to reveal his alter ego: Kishin Liger.

Kishin Liger
Kishin Liger.

This side of Liger is considered to be extremely dangerous, and there’s no saying on how he’ll try to attack his opponents. This was made clear when he tried to stab Suzuki with a large metal spike last week.

Related: Kishin Liger’s History In NJPW Revisited

Back to why Liger was missing from the tour. According to a report from PWInsider, Jushin was not booked for the tour because his alter ego Kishin was unleashed. Kishin Liger is a rare transformation which usually happens when someone tries to remove Jushin Liger’s mask. He has had his mask removed to reveal the evil Kishin Liger only four times over the last three decades. Needless to say, we only get to see this character in special events.

The Kishin Liger gimmick consists of mannerisms and imagery that is the exact opposite to that of a normal person. Jushin Thunder Liger on the other hand, is a wholesome and jovial type of character. It appears that Jushin Liger was not booked for the event because it would contradict the ongoing storyline with Minoru Suzuki.

Bullet Club Release “Paid Advertisement” For NJPW Los Angeles Shows

The faction has been the focal point of NJPW’s marketing strategy for their July 1st and 2nd shows in L.A, and have now released the following video:

Report: Jushin Liger To Work More Dates For WWE

Japanese wrestling legend Jushin “Thunder” Liger is expected to work more dates for WWE after making his debut for the company at NXT Takeover: Brooklyn this past weekend. According to the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, an unnamed wrestling promoter attempted to book Liger for a few upcoming shows in the United States but was told WWE has already booked him for those dates.

On this week’s episode of NXT, Tyler Breeze said that he’s not done with Liger, another indication that we’ll be seeing him back in NXT soon.

It’s possible that Liger will be working for WWE & NXT with a deal similar to Samoa Joe’s, where he’s still able to wrestle for other promotions (mainly New Japan Pro Wrestling).

Liger working for WWE while under contract with New Japan Pro Wrestling is an unprecedented move for WWE and a sign that the company is changing its mentality of working with competing promotions. Industry insiders have observed that NJPW working with WWE in this capacity is not a good sign for Ring of Honor, which has been exchanging talent with New Japan over the past several years.

Jushin Liger Addresses WWE Fans Ahead Of NXT Takeover: Brooklyn

Triple H tweeted the following video of New Japan Pro Wrestling legend Jushin Liger addressing the WWE Universe. Liger will be making a special appearance at next weekend’s NXT Takeover: Brooklyn event in a match against Tyler Breeze.

Jeff Hardy Speaks On Retirement, TNA/Spike TV Situation, Sting, CM Punk & More

The following are highlights of a new Alternative Nation interview with Jeff Hardy:

Moving onto wrestling, the first thing I’ve got to ask, is what’s your reaction to the reports that SpikeTV won’t be renewing their contract with TNA, and all of the crazy stories flying around?

I don’t know, I’m not a social network guy, I don’t even read timelines or tweets. But I’m sure negotiations are – I still have hope. It’s not really my problem, but I hope we remain on Spike, I hope they can work something out. Gosh, I hope 1 or 2 years from now we’re still coming on every Thursday night on Spike. I don’t know, I go to the shows, I do the best I can in the ring. That’s my commitment to the company, is to do what I can do to make the show good. It’s their job to use me in the right fashion. As far as re-signing with Spike, I don’t know what’s going to happen. I hope we remain.

You’ve gone through a lot of character changes in the last year. How did bringing your Willow character to TNA come about, and when and why did you go back to being Jeff Hardy recently?

Years ago, I think my 2nd year in TNA on this 2nd run, my buddy Shannon Moore and his wife, she’s a phenomenal seamstress, and she made me a Willow mask. We’d thrown the idea around, but my hair was short, so I was like: ‘I need to grow my hair back if I want this to really look right.’ She made the mask, and then some time passed, and then maybe a year and a half or so later, my hair got longer. Jeff Jarrett and I started talking about the possibility of bringing Willow to TNA. I was like, ‘Yeah!’ I was kind of intimidated, but it’s one of those things that when I look back on my career, I’ll be glad I that I did it.

It’s something I would have loved to do years ago, but the timing was never right. WWE never would have went for it. They would never want ‘Jeff Hardy staying covered, because [he’s] this money maker.’ But that’s what’s so cool about TNA being open-minded, they take a few risks, especially with me, and letting me do that. Because instead of that aggressive heel bad guy character that Willow was back in the OMEGA days, I think now that we’ve experimented with it, it can be a more kid friendly type of deal. Because my daughter Ruby just loves Willow, Kurt Angle’s son Kody loves Willow too. When Jeff Hardy came back, I was just starting to see masks in the crowd, it was just getting rolling good.

But then the reason for Jeff Hardy’s return, is obviously because Matt Hardy came back, and naturally we wanted to do some Hardy Boyz tag matches. That’s the big match this week on Destination X, Thursday night at 9PM on SpikeTV, it’s going to be the Wolves and the Hardy Boyz for the World Tag Team Titles. But that’s basically why Willow is not around right now, because the Hardy Boyz have reunited.

You mentioned Matt being back in TNA, your facing the Wolves on Impact, and Team 3D on an upcoming episode. What’s it like tagging with Matt again after awhile being at such a good place in your life now? Also what was it like being back in the ring with Team 3D after so many years, and do you think you will continue tagging in TNA, maybe some other matches, like getting Beer Money back together?

Oh, that that would be amazing if that happened. But as Matt goes, I don’t know if he’s going to sign a long term deal, I don’t know what he wants to do. But I think the coolest thing for me, I did a few independent shots with Matt back in June, we had two tag matches and they were just great. The guys we worked were just awesome, and we just felt like we were just as good as we were back in the day. Now bringing that back to TV, after Matt and myself, we went through our dark period, and to come out of that and the other side still rocking it, it feels really good to say that we can still go out there and be the Hardy Boyz, and for the fans to still vibe on our style.

That run ended obviously with the Victory Road thing with Sting, and you had a match with Sting on Impact too and wrestled him a few times. What was your relationship like with Sting over the years, when he was in TNA?

It was great, I was still always a bit starstruck every time I would say hello to him at TV’s, because he’s the man. He’s a huge influence for me, back in the day it was him in the NWA, and The Ultimate Warrior in the WWF, that was the combined Jeff Hardy. It really shows now, I’m 36 years old, I think that influence shows pretty clearly through who I am now. But yeah it was great, I can’t wait to see him pop up here in the future.

A guy you did a lot with in the past was CM Punk, who recently reportedly retired. There have been different things said between you guys during the years, but it’s been 5 years now, how do you look back at that now as being a key feud in your career?

It was one of the biggest, pretty close to the best. We had a good chemistry, completely different people, but at the time it was perfect. He is so good, he is so good. That’s another collection as far as feuds go, that I am going to look back at and go, wow I am glad I got to work with that guy and create some immortal artwork that is going to go down in the history books. It’s all good now, I went through my times as far as the way I felt about him, but he’s a good guy, and a good wrestler, he’s done great.

In a perfect world, who would you like to wrestle before you retire? May it be from WWE, TNA, ROH, or wherever?

I think deep down, it would have to be Jushin Thunder Liger. When I first started watching Japanese wrestling way back in the day, he just stood out to me. A lot of the inspiration for Willow back then, was from [him], as far as the mask, superhero, or villain. Oh my gosh, to know he’s still flying over here and working every now and then, makes me want to say: ‘Hey, I want to be part of that dream match.’ So more than anything, I’d say it’s Jeff Hardy vs. Jushin Thunder Liger.
